What is happening in Texas and surrounding areas is tragic. The fires out west are devastating not only to the people that live there but also to plant and wildlife. Make no mistake war has been declared on us and we are under attack. These attacks are planned and carried out by man not by random natural events. When we were attacked on 9/11 what did many of us do in our desperation to help? I donated to the American Red Cross as many of my family and friends did. Do you recall the aftermath, the battle to get those donations to those directly affected by that attack? I do. The Louisiana-based Cajun Navy, a group that began when local volunteers with boats rescued Hurricane Katrina victims, headed to Houston to help victims of Hurricane Harvey who are stranded due to the severe ongoing rain and flooding in East Texas. The mother of a 12-year-old girl has been arrested after a “Jesus Loves” tattoo was spotted on her daughter’s shoulder. They seem to be in almost every picture or video of flooded neighborhoods in and around Houston. There are scores of cars and trucks with water up to their windows and in some cases over the hood and roof. In fact, the flooding is so extensive, Cox Automotive estimates a half-million vehicles may wind up in the scrap yard. A woman who was rescued from Hurricane Harvey after 36 hours went off on CNN for trying to interview her on camera while she was with her children. The mother began the interview by explaining how long she had to wait to be rescued, but was becoming visibly upset and anxious by having to share her story to the CNN correspondent. Rogue alligators have been cropping up in backyards and driveways around Texas due to the rising flood waters brought by Hurricane Harvey. But a greater gator problem may soon face the city of Beaumont if water levels continue to rise. A popular alligator theme park says that flood waters are dangerously close to exceeding the height of fences that are keeping hundreds of the reptiles inside their enclosures. As if the catastrophic floods in Houston haven’t done enough damage, people are now reporting large colonies of fire ants floating on the rising water. These fire ants appear to have an outrageous survival mechanism. And, frankly, it’s unsettling. Houston Chronicle reporter Mike Hixenbaugh tweeted a video of the red ants, infamous for their painful bites, on Sunday and said that they use the bodies of dead ants as a raft. Apparently fire ants already have a slight resistance to water on their own, but nothing so strong as when they work together. Colonies will link together to be able to stay afloat even in the severe flooding Texas is experiencing.

A hawk sought shelter in a Houston man’s taxi while Hurricane Harvey approached Texas on August 25. William Bruso came back to his taxi after stopping to stock up on food and supplies for the storm, when he realized a Coopers hawk was sitting in the passenger seat of his car. According to Bruso, the hawk was not injured in any way, but refused to leave the car. Eventually, Bruso was able to coax the hawk to the car door, where he could pick him up and move him out. Bruso speculated the hawk was looking for a place to “hunker down” during the storm, so he named him “Harvey the Hurricane Hawk.”
