My Opinion….What I Learned from 9/11
Post Date: 2017-08-31 08:46:39 by Deckard

What is happening in Texas and surrounding areas is tragic. The fires out west are devastating not only to the people that live there but also to plant and wildlife. Make no mistake war has been declared on us and we are under attack. These attacks are planned and carried out by man not by random natural events. When we were attacked on 9/11 what did many of us do in our desperation to help? I donated to the American Red Cross as many of my family and friends did. Do you recall the aftermath, the battle to get those donations to those directly affected by that attack? I do. I decided then I would never ever donate to not only the Red Cross but any of the large organizations asking for ...

BLS: Americans Spend More on Taxes Than Food and Clothing Combined
Post Date: 2017-08-31 08:28:25 by IbJensen

(CNSNews.com) - Americans on average spent more on taxes in 2016 than they did on food and clothing combined, according to data released this week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The same data also shows that in three years—from 2013 to 2016—the average tax bill for Americans increased 41.13 percent. In 2016, according to BLS, “consumer units” (which include families, financially independent individuals, and people living in a single household who share expenses) spent more on average on federal, state and local taxes ($10,489) than they did on food ($7,203) and clothing ($1,803) combined ($9,006). The average tax bill for American “consumer units” ...

Prices Should Rise During Crises Like Hurricane Harvey (It's not price gouging)
Post Date: 2017-08-31 08:24:09 by Deckard

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is upset about "price gouging" during hurricane Harvey. Some stores raised prices to $99 for a case of bottled water—$5 for a gallon of gas. "These are things you can't do in Texas," he says. "There are significant penalties if you price gouge in a crisis like this." There sure are: $20,000 per "gouge"—$200,000 if the "victim" is a senior citizen. Texas, a state that I thought understood capitalism, punishes people who practice it. Prices should rise during emergencies. Price changes save lives. That's because prices aren't just money—they are information. Price changes tell ...

Obama Admin Hid Intel on Iranian Militants in Syria to Push Nuclear Deal

The Obama administration likely hid information about Iran illicitly ferrying militants into Syria on commercial aircraft in order to promote the landmark nuclear deal and foster multi-billion dollar business deals with Tehran’s state-controlled airline sector, according to lawmakers and other sources familiar with the matter. The Washington Free Beacon first disclosed last week that congressional leaders are calling for an investigation into Iran for using its state-controlled air carrier, Iran Air, to ferry militant fighters into Syria, where they are taking up arms in defense of embattled President Bashar al-Assad. Photographs provided to Congress show Iran using Iran Air to ferry ...

High school students petition for removal of teacher’s LGBT pride flag

AUBURN, Alabama, August 29, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) – Students and parents at Auburn High School are asking for the removal of a gay pride flag hung in one of the classrooms by a teacher, ironically applying the argument used to take down Confederate battle flags and statues of Civil War figures from government buildings, college campuses and other public venues. The pride flag in the teacher’s classroom “creates a hostile and provocative learning environment for students not comfortable to openly supporting the LGBTQ+ community in a public school where students come from diverse political and religious backgrounds,” according to a Change.org petition filed by ...

Marco Rubio has spent months pushing the White House to expand a temporary program that would allow Venezuelans who have fled Nicolás Maduro’s regime to stay in the United States, according to a previously unpublished letter from Rubio to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and then-Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly. The letter, dated March 20, asks Tillerson and Kelly to “review the existing conditions in Venezuela and consider granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to eligible Venezuelan nationals residing in the United States.” “In light of the ongoing political, economic, social and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, it is not in the best ...

Sea Shepherd says it will abandon pursuit of Japanese whalers

The anti-whaling organisation Sea Shepherd will not contest the Southern Ocean against Japanese whalers this season, Captain Paul Watson has announced, accusing “hostile governments” in the US, Australia and New Zealand of acting “in league with Japan” against the protest vessel. Sea Shepherd has been obstructing Japanese whaling vessels in the Southern Ocean each year since 2005, but Watson said the cost of sending vessels south, Japan’s increased use of military technology to track them, and new anti-terrorism laws passed specifically to thwart Sea Shepherd’s activities made physically tracking the ships impossible. Australia took Japan to the international ...

Clyde Cain, the founder of the group, posted a video on Facebook Monday evening with a complete update on the situation.

The mother of a 12-year-old girl has been arrested after a “Jesus Loves” tattoo was spotted on her daughter’s shoulder. The tattoo, which also featured a blue-green cross, was seen by a fifth-grade teacher at Arnco-Sargent Elementary in Newnan, Ga., during a school dance, when the girl wore a strapless dress, according to 11 Alive Atlanta. The teacher called the police to report it. “Each of the parents had a different story, and it boiled down to frankly just finger pointing,” Lt. Jason Fetner, of the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, told the news station. The girl originally told authorities that her father forced her to get the tattoo and that it angered ...

A half-million flooded cars and trucks could be scrapped after Harvey

They seem to be in almost every picture or video of flooded neighborhoods in and around Houston. There are scores of cars and trucks with water up to their windows and in some cases over the hood and roof. In fact, the flooding is so extensive, Cox Automotive estimates a half-million vehicles may wind up in the scrap yard. "This is worse than Hurricane Sandy," said Jonathan Smoke, chief economist for Cox Automotive. "Sandy was bad, but the flooding with Hurricane Harvey could impact far more vehicles."

A woman who was rescued from Hurricane Harvey after 36 hours went off on CNN for trying to interview her on camera while she was with her children. The mother began the interview by explaining how long she had to wait to be rescued, but was becoming visibly upset and anxious by having to share her story to the CNN correspondent. The CNN correspondent continued to ask questions and touch the mother’s arm as she and her daughter were crying. “We walked through four feet of water to get food on the first day,” the mother said, clearly annoyed at this point. “Yeah, that’s a lot of shit.”

Over 300 gators may escape from enclosure as hurricane flood waters approach fence height

Rogue alligators have been cropping up in backyards and driveways around Texas due to the rising flood waters brought by Hurricane Harvey. But a greater gator problem may soon face the city of Beaumont if water levels continue to rise. A popular alligator theme park says that flood waters are dangerously close to exceeding the height of fences that are keeping hundreds of the reptiles inside their enclosures. Gary Saurage, the owner of Gator Country, told KFDM that water levels inside their facilities have nearly reached a critical level.

Trump is Unstable, Prejudiced, Dishonest and Selfish

Americans do not hold President Donald Trump in high regard, with most suggesting he is dishonest, unstable, prejudiced and selfish, according to a survey released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center. And the criticisms of the country’s 45th president do not end there, with a strong majority of Americans similarly indicating that they largely disagree with both Trump’s policies and his conduct since entering the White House. A massive 66 percent said they agree with Trump on none, almost none or just a few of the issues facing the country today. Only 15 percent said they agreed with Trump on all or nearly all of the issues. Even among Republicans, the figure was just 31 percent. ...

Board sues Puerto Rico governor for rejecting furloughs

A federal control board overseeing Puerto Rico's crisis-ridden finances sued the island's governor on Monday for refusing to impose furloughs and take other measures it says are needed to save money. The lawsuit further raises tensions between Gov. Ricardo Rossello and the board, which is demanding public employee furloughs and a pension reform as the U.S. territory tries to restructure a portion of its $74 billion public debt load. The board also requested an injunction to prohibit the governor from refusing to comply. "While our preference was to avoid this step, we believe it is a necessary measure to keep Puerto Rico on track with its commitments to reduce spending and ...

For Houston’s many undocumented immigrants, storm is just the latest challenge
Post Date: 2017-08-29 11:48:40 by XDMAR

Among the potential victims of the Hurricane Harvey are hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who live in Houston and other hard-hit parts of Texas. The storm is devastating the region just days before a new state law cracking down on sanctuary cities is scheduled to take effect. Advocates say it presents an entirely new set of challenges for a population already reeling from accelerated state and federal enforcement of immigration laws. As the hurricane loomed, federal authorities and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said undocumented immigrants should seek shelter from the storm and rising floodwaters. In a joint statement, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. ...

Most Harvey flood victims uninsured, face big bills alone

NEW YORK (AP) -- Homeowners suffering flood damage from Harvey are more likely to be on the hook for losses than victims of prior storms - a potentially crushing blow to personal finances and neighborhoods along the Gulf Coast. Insurance experts say only a small fraction of homeowners in Harvey's path of destruction have flood insurance. That means families with flooded basements, soaked furniture and water-damaged walls will have to dig deep into their pockets or take on more debt to fix up their homes. Some may be forced to sell, if they can, and leave their communities. "All these people taken out in boats, they have a second problem: They have no insurance," said Robert ...

Hurricane Harvey's Stinging Nightmare: Floating Fire Ant Colonies
Post Date: 2017-08-29 10:36:49 by XDMAR

As if the catastrophic floods in Houston haven’t done enough damage, people are now reporting large colonies of fire ants floating on the rising water. These fire ants appear to have an outrageous survival mechanism. And, frankly, it’s unsettling. Houston Chronicle reporter Mike Hixenbaugh tweeted a video of the red ants, infamous for their painful bites, on Sunday and said that they use the bodies of dead ants as a raft. Apparently fire ants already have a slight resistance to water on their own, but nothing so strong as when they work together. Colonies will link together to be able to stay afloat even in the severe flooding Texas is experiencing.

Hawk seeks refuge in taxi during Hurricane Harvey

A hawk sought shelter in a Houston man’s taxi while Hurricane Harvey approached Texas on August 25. William Bruso came back to his taxi after stopping to stock up on food and supplies for the storm, when he realized a Coopers hawk was sitting in the passenger seat of his car. According to Bruso, the hawk was not injured in any way, but refused to leave the car. Eventually, Bruso was able to coax the hawk to the car door, where he could pick him up and move him out. Bruso speculated the hawk was looking for a place to “hunker down” during the storm, so he named him “Harvey the Hurricane Hawk.”
