Hemp Comes Home (Legal hemp has returned to Kentucky. Will the Feds step aside and let the industry flourish?) Post Date: 2017-09-06 07:21:54 by Deckard

In a former tobacco warehouse in Kentucky's horse country, a silver-haired seventh-generation hemp farmer sits with his business partners. As Andrew Graves, the chairman of Atalo Holdings, leads a discussion of seed varietals and soil consistencies, the group snacks on hemp nuts, grabbed in handfuls from a sack. In the warren of rooms just behind them, oils drip from stills as lab techs figure out formulas for supplements and vapors. No one in the room is younger than 50. No one talks about marijuana, and honestly, they'd rather you not bring it up either. Kentucky's new face of hemp looks remarkably like the old one. A really old one. For much of its history, the Bluegrass ...
Utah Nurse's Abuse by Police Detective Goes Viral; Does the Outrage Actually Mean Anything? Post Date: 2017-09-06 07:13:40 by Deckard

Even other law enforcement agencies are throwing shade. A Utah hospital that became the center of a holiday weekend media blitz has enacted new controls on police access in order to avoid a repeat of a nurse's abuse and arrest. A Salt Lake City police detective's terrible treatment of University of Utah nurse Alex Wubbels was the outrage story of the weekend. In the July incident, Wubbels refused to comply with Det. Jeff Payne's demands for the blood of a man put in a coma when he was struck during a high-speed chase. (The patient in question was an innocent bystander, and he was not suspected of any misconduct.) This past Thursday, Wubbels released body camera footage that ...

California Supreme Court Rules Against Police Collection of License Plate Data Post Date: 2017-09-05 10:22:26 by Deckard

Privacy and civil liberties advocates won a small victory this week as the California Supreme Court ruled that license plate data secretly gathered from millions of drivers can not be kept secret. On Thursday the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California by confirming that law enforcement cannot keep secret about license plate data gathered from millions of unwitting drivers. The court ruled that license plate data was gathered indiscriminately and not as part of an investigation targeted at a particular crime. Thus the records can not be classified as records related to an ongoing ...

New Carlisle News photographer Andy Grimm was shot by a Clark County deputy Monday evening. Andy had left the office around 10:00 p.m. to take pictures of lightning. Trump reportedly plans to end DACA — and the young immigrants who depend on the program are in 'panic mode' Post Date: 2017-09-04 10:09:32 by buckeroo

President Donald Trump is expected to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, a controversial Obama-era policy that shielded immigrants from deportation if they were brought to the US illegally as children. According to at least two media reports published on Sunday, Trump wants to end the program and delay enforcement for six months. The delay would allow Congress to pass legislation mitigating the effect that DACA's demise may have on the nearly 800,000 immigrants who benefit from it. Politico reporter Eliana Johnson cited sources who said the White House and House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan spoke about the decision Sunday morning. Trump was set to ...
Frustration mounts over premiums for individual health plans Post Date: 2017-09-04 08:57:03 by XDMAR

WASHINGTON (AP) Millions of people who buy individual health insurance policies and get no financial help from the Affordable Care Act are bracing for another year of double-digit premium increases, and their frustration is boiling over. Some are expecting premiums for 2018 to rival a mortgage payment. What they pay is tied to the price of coverage on the health insurance markets created by the Obama-era law, but these consumers get no protection from the law's tax credits, which cushion against rising premiums. Instead they pay full freight and bear the brunt of market problems such as high costs and diminished competition. On Capitol Hill, there's a chance that upcoming ...

Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police President John McNesby made the statement Thursday during a rally held by and in support of police, according to NBC Philadelphia. The Back the Blue rally was in response to a protest the week before by members of Black Lives Matter held outside the house of Officer Ryan Pownall, who fatally shot a David Jones in June. Why Houston's prospects for recovery look good - unlike some other hurricane-battered cities Post Date: 2017-09-02 08:31:46 by XDMAR

Twelve years after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, New Orleans has never fully recovered. Hundreds of thousands fled and never came back. Its population today is 80 percent of what it was before the storm. New Orleans is not alone. After Hurricane Ike, Galveston, Texas lost 20 percent of its population. Hurricane Andrew forced out about 30,000 people or 35 percent of the population of Homestead, Florida. Yet many believe Houston and surrounding environs may be spared a similar fate. "It will recover. It will absorb this shock. And how long it's going to take depends on how big the shock is, but it will recover," says Mercatus Center economist Veronique de Rugy. Her ...

Seattle, WA An overzealous cop was fired in 2015 after the officer was caught falsely accusing a 69-year-old man of swinging a golf club at her patrol car. Accused by the police chief of acting with racial bias in an unnecessarily aggressive manner, Officer Cynthia Whitlatch wrongfully arrested an Air Force veteran walking down the street using a golf club as a cane. Although Whitlatch argued that her dash cam video recorded the elderly man swinging at her, the video does not support any of her allegations. Now, two years later, this cop is having her termination reversed and receiving two years of back pay. As KIRO 7 reports:The back pay is more than $105,000 in two lump payments, ...

Federal Judge Rules Indiana Seizing Cars With Civil Forfeiture Is Unconstitutional Post Date: 2017-09-01 09:47:31 by Deckard

In a major win for private property rights, a federal judge ruled that Indiana can no longer seize vehicles under its controversial civil forfeiture laws, which allow police to confiscate property without filing criminal charges. Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson ruled that Indiana's laws were unconstitutional because they failed to provide a timely hearing for the property owner to contest the seizure. The decision comes just days after Hoosier lawmakers held a summer study committee to discuss forfeiture reform, and less than a month after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a new policy to expand police seizures nationwide. The case began last September when an officer with ...

People are outraged over a Charlie Hebdo cover characterizing Hurricane Harvey victims as neo-Nazis Post Date: 2017-09-01 07:35:40 by Deckard

A French satirical magazine famous for its provocative and inflammatory cartoons was met with backlash on Thursday after it released a cover that characterized Hurricane Harvey victims as neo-Nazis. The cover for its Friday magazine showed an image of drowning limbs saluting Nazi flags, accompanied by the text: "God exists. He drowned all the neo-Nazis of Texas." Predictably, the cartoon provoked some occasionally misguided backlash on social media. The French publication has long courted and embraced controversy over its topical cartoons. After publishing images that some Muslims found offensive, the publication was the target of a terrorist attack at its ...

Katrina commander: Federal response to Harvey is 'amateur hour' Post Date: 2017-08-31 12:04:51 by Willie Green

Former Joint Task Force Katrina Commander Russel Honore said Wednesday the military's rescue efforts in states affected by Hurricane Harvey resembles "amateur hour" because the federal government lacks a strategy for how to respond to large-scale natural disasters. "The American people have put too much confidence in us," Honore told CNN host Erin Burnett. "We have been too successful overseas to come out in amateur hour and incrementally deploy the force." The retired Army lieutenant general said the federal government should have "come in big" and arrived at the "edge of the storm" so that rescue efforts could begin immediately after ...
