The ACLU hard at work protecting the Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution Post Date: 2018-07-02 15:37:06 by Gatlin

After the price tag for the City of Milwaukee's proposed settlement with ACLU of Wisconsin over police stop-and-frisk practices ballooned to $6 million, officials are trying to limit their costs by capping fees for a consultant linked to the deal. A tentative deal set to go before a Common Council committee Monday would limit the city's costs and fees for the consultant to about $1.5 million. If that proposal passes the Judiciary and Legislation Committee and the full Council, and is approved by Mayor Tom Barrett, the city's settlement costs would total about $3.4 million. The previous proposed settlement stalled in May after aldermen learned the city's costs could ...
Foreclosures to be sold back to owners in ACLU, city settlement Post Date: 2018-07-02 14:49:28 by Gatlin

The ACLU of Michigan has reached a settlement in its 2016 lawsuit against Detroit, which includes a deal to save potentially thousands of foreclosed homes over the next three years by selling them back to low-income owners for $1,000. Under the plan, a group of homes headed to this year's fall tax auction will instead be bought by the city and sold to owner-occupants who prove they qualified for the city's poverty tax exemption, which lower or eliminate tax bills. The ACLU sued the city in Wayne County Circuit Court two years ago over how it administered the state-mandated property tax break for the poor, arguing it was inaccessible to the vast majority of homeowners who were ...

Michael Cohen says family and country, not President Trump, is his 'first loyalty' Post Date: 2018-07-02 07:45:49 by Jameson

"...in his first in-depth interview since the FBI raided his office and homes in April, Cohen strongly signaled his willingness to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller and federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York -- even if that puts President Trump in jeopardy..." Petrillo is expected to take over as Cohens lead counsel in the coming days. And Cohen makes clear that his decision about whether to cooperate will be based not on any previous loyalty to Trump -- but on Petrillos legal advice. Once Petrillo fully assumes his role, a joint defense agreement Cohen shared with the president, which allowed their lawyers to share information and ...

Sen. Tim Scott wants to recommend his friend and fellow South Carolinian Rep. Trey Gowdy to be one of the candidates President Donald Trump considers for the Supreme Court. "I'm going to recommend Trey Gowdy be one of the folks that I would have a strong recommendation for him serving on the Supreme Court," Scott said in an interview on CNN's "The Van Jones Show" airing Sunday at 7 p.m. ET. "I hope that the President will be open to that recommendation." Scott called Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, "incredibly fair" and said he was an equal opportunity critic of both the Trump and Obama administrations. "A guy who will call balls ...

Brightline Seeks To Solve A Common Travel Dilemma When distances between cities are great, air travel may be the only practical way to travel. When distances are short, driving or public transportation may offer alternatives. But many times, the distance between U.S. cities falls somewhere in-between these two extremes. Brightlinethe only privately owned, operated and maintained passenger railway system in the U.S.has a bold plan to connect these cities by higher-speed passenger rail. Earlier this spring, the company submitted an unsolicited proposal to develop inter-city rail service between the Tampa Bay area and Orlando, Florida (a distance of about 85 miles), for what would ...

It is not yet known at what point the citizens of Key West opted to repeal the laws of gravity that govern the rest of us. But it appears the decision was made on or before Aug. 6, 1974. It was on that day that America's southernmost community apparently opted to spit in Sir Isaac Newton's face. On that serene and surreal evening, the forces of nature (and perhaps some other forces, depending on whom you ask) converged with our national pastime on the corner of the Bermuda Triangle, crafting a moment that, in terms of sheer oddity, may have no peer in baseball lore. Some eyewitnesses have told the story hundreds of times to thousands of people. Most listeners refuse to believe ...
Senate Votes To Legalize Hemp After 80 Years Of Prohibition Post Date: 2018-06-30 21:18:14 by Hondo68

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate approved a bill to legalize hemp, an industrial crop that has been banned for decades. In April, Senators Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Rand Paul (R-KY), Ron Wyden (D-OR), and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) submitted a separate bill to legalize hemp, and those provisions were then incorporated into the broader farm bill. The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry approved that version before the upper house of Congress voted to approve it this week by a margin of 86-11. The bill would legalize the cultivation, processing, and sale of hemp. "Consumers across America buy hundreds of millions in retail products every year that contain hemp," McConnell ...

Meet Burrito Bob, Permit Patty, and other vigilante informants A man wearing a Hawaiian shirt on San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) went viral earlier this month after calling the cops on a man eating his lunch. A video posted to Reddit shows an angered passenger, who is now referred to as Burrito Bob, confronting another passenger on a BART train for snacking while traveling on the Dublin/Pleasanton line, close to the famed Fruitvale Station. BART currently has rules against eating and drinking; violations carry a fine of $250. "You can't wait? A sign says no eating and drinking. You don't get it? You don't get it. You must be stupid. I've seen people ...

A creepy footnote to the shooting in Maryland yesterday. Apparently, the identity of the shooter who had no ID on him, refused to give his name and had obscured his fingerprints was determined via the use of facial recognition software. An NBC news story about the incident mentions this fairly casually and without comment: Senior law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation told NBC News that Ramos had been identified through the use of facial recognition software. The sources said earlier that he had somehow obscured his fingerprints, making identification difficult. (Anne Arundel County Deputy Police Chief Bill) Krampf would not confirm those ...
Texas Man Evicted For Not Paying Government Mandated ‘Rent’ On His Own Property Post Date: 2018-06-29 14:42:28 by Deckard

A 79-year-old man in Texas was forcibly evicted from a home hes owned and lived in for decades. He was thrown out for not paying to rent his own property from the government. Property taxes are nothing more than rent demanded by the king for the privilege of allowing you to continue to live on land and in a house you already own. But instead of fighting this horrific display of slavery, people actually followed their masters orders and evicted an elderly man from his property for not paying his rent. Billie McGruder will be 80-years-old next month. He has lived in the house his parents bought in the 1930s for decades, but he was evicted Friday, reported My Palm Beach ...
Republican Governor Signs $15 Minimum Wage Bill in Terrible 'Grand Bargain' Post Date: 2018-06-29 07:20:27 by Deckard

The Republican governor of Massachusetts just made a deal to give away more freebies and keep taxes high.On Thursday, Massachusetts Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed into law a bill that will raise the minimum wage in his state to $15 an hour by 2023 and authorize a generous paid leave program. The governor's goal, it seems, was to stave off a threatened reduction in the sales tax at the ballot box. Baker touted the legislation as a "grand bargain." But in this case, the winners are those advocating for a higher minimum wage and more mandatory paid leave for workers. The losers, on the other hand, are the voters who won't be able to decide on these issues for ...

I remember when America was a free country. You could get on an airliner without an ID. Driving licenses didnt even have photos. If a friend was coming through your city on a flight and had a few hours layover, you could meet them inside the airport for lunch or dinner. You could meet friends, children, and relatives at the gate or see them off at the gate. Parents could actually put children on the plane and grandparents could take them off.Your flight ticket was good at any airline. If something happened to your flight or you missed it, you could use the ticket on another airline going to the same place. On international flights you were permitted two free stopovers prior to your ...

Las Vegas, NV Sadly, the more information we receive from the worst mass shooting in modern American history, the less coverage it gets by the mainstream media. Damning footage contradicting official timelines and LVMPD documents have surfaced and they barely register as a blip on the medias radar. After being forced to release information on the October 1 massacre, the Las Vegas police departmentin an insultingly futile attempt at transparencyhas been dumping information related to the shooting. In what appears to be a deliberate attempt to muddy the waters, much of the video released by the department has no time stamps and is provided without context. Like all ...

A nationwide restaurant chain is accused of "racial profiling" after a manager called the cops on a black sorority party Tuesday to ensure they paid their bill, according to a report. The group of roughly 40 Delta Sigma Theta members which included a doctor and a judge had to wait nearly half an hour for their bill at a Cleveland-area Bahama Breeze restaurant, according to Cleveland.com. When one woman threatened to leave if the bill wasnt presented, a manager called police and had them remain at the eatery until the sorority party members all settled their tabs. The woman never left, and everyone paid their share. Police were standing there to make ...
Three Glaring Examples Proving Snopes and the AP Have No Business Being Official 'Fact Checkers' Post Date: 2018-06-25 13:27:03 by Deckard

Before the 2016 election, people freely chose their sources for information, had discussions about the veracity and accuracy of those sources if they chose to question them, and then formed opinions based on those discussions. Now, however, this choice and discussion is quickly fading away and is being replaced by a seeming ministry of truth made up of ostensibly objective media outlets like Politifact, Snopes, and the Associated Press. For years, Snopes has been debunking articles and giving them questionable ratings because of their content, but this was never a big deal because readers like ours are smart enough to question Snopes and read the facts for themselves to make up their ...

Why We Can’t Drive Faster Post Date: 2018-06-25 13:00:06 by Deckard

Almost everything about cars has changed over the past 50 years except for how fast were allowed to drive them.In 1970, you could legally drive 70-75 MPH on most highways in cars with drum brakes, without ABS and not even one air bag. There was no Lane Keep Assist or Automated Emergency Braking and the headlights were pitiful things by the standards of the 1990s.But we cant legally drive faster today in cars with more technology and capability than the race cars of 1970.What then is the point of all the technology?Yes, I know. Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaafety. The accident (and fatality) rate has declined as all this stuff got glued to ...
