Spurred by Uvalde, Texas Legislature Passes Bill To Finally Close 'Dead Suspect Loophole'
Post Date: 2023-06-02 00:22:52 by Charles_Byrd

Following outrage over the lack of transparency surrounding the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, last year, the Texas legislature passed a bill Monday to close a notorious loophole in the state's public record law that allows police to hide records of deaths in custody. The bill, H.B. 30, now goes to Republican Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott's desk. It would clarify that an exception that allows police to withhold records in cases where the suspect of an investigation was never convicted of a crime does not apply to deceased individuals. Texas enacted the statute in 1997 to protect the privacy of innocent suspects. Still, police departments quickly figured out they could also use it to ...

Even Pennsylvanians Can Now Buy Wine in Grocery Stores, but New Yorkers Still Can't

When I lived in New York City a couple of decades ago, you could buy beer in grocery stores but not wine. Although that remains true, a bill introduced by state Sen. Liz Krueger (D–Manhattan) would finally allow New Yorkers to buy wine in stores that also sell food—an option that shoppers in most states (including Texas, where I live) already take for granted. As usual, the opposition to alcohol liberalization in New York is led by independent liquor merchants, who see competition as an existential threat. The chief backer of Krueger's bill is Wegmans, the Rochester- based grocery chain that also played a central role in making beer more accessible in my home state of ...

After over three years, federal student loan borrowers will likely have to start repaying their debt. According to the terms of a debt ceiling deal struck by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Biden, the extended pause on student loan repayment will end on August 30th. While a previous announcement from the Education Department had vowed to end the pause on August 29—provided the Supreme Court had not yet released a decision on Biden's student loan forgiveness plan—the debt ceiling deal solidifies this promise. If the bill passes, the Education Department will be statutorily barred from announcing yet another last-minute extension— as officials have done on eight ...

Rejoice Georgians: You Don't Need a Government Permit To Advise Breastfeeding Moms

Georgia's Supreme Court today struck down a state law that required people who provide lactation consulting to obtain costly and time-consuming state licenses. In a unanimous ruling, the justices determined that a law passed in 2016 unconstitutionally deprived Mary Jackson of work. Jackson had been providing lactation care consulting services for more than 30 years and started a nonprofit, Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE), to provide breastfeeding education. State Dept Says Pentagon Is Preventing Cooperation with the International Court

A State Department official told Congress the Pentagon is preventing the US government from working with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to prosecute Russians for the invasion of Ukraine. Several Senators on the Foreign Relations Committee pressed Beth Van Schaack, ambassador-at-large for Global Criminal Justice, to name the Department of Defense as holding up cooperation with the ICC. Committee chairman, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), said, “The State Department has encouraged working with the [International Criminal Court] ICC to bring Putin to justice. It is no secret that Department of Defense is the holdup.” Click for Full Text!

Now feds want to 'regulate our freedom of association'

In many ways, freedom of speech is vanishing in America, with "equity" demands, "pronoun" orders and requirements for not just political, but gender, racial and other correctness. Freedom of religion, too, has been attacked under the Joe Biden administration, with multiple legal fights by groups that simply want to worship in their faith traditions. After all, It was Biden's administration that spied on traditional Catholics. Click for Full Text!

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina has come out in opposition to the Fiscal Responsibility Act, a compromise proposal between President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to raise the U.S. debt limit and avert a default, she announced on Twitter. Mace, who represents South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, said that she couldn’t support the deal because the cuts to spending were too low and placed no limits on borrowing, according to a lengthy Twitter thread published wrote on Tuesday. She also cited provisions, termed the “fine print,” which allegedly contradict aspects of the bill. Click for Full Text!

This Friday and Saturday, JPMorgan Chase’s Chairman and CEO, Jamie Dimon, is scheduled to sit for some very uncomfortable questioning in a deposition concerning what role he played in allowing his bank to serve as a vast cash conduit for Jeffrey Epstein, which enabled Epstein to perpetuate his sex trafficking of underage girls. The Attorney General’s office of the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) has filed a federal lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase that makes devastating charges against the largest bank in the United States. It alleges that JPMorgan Chase sat on a mountain of evidence that Jeffrey Epstein was running a child sex trafficking ring as it continued to keep him as a client; ...

Montana governor signs law to define ‘sex’ as only male or female

Republican Governor Greg Gianforte has signed a bill defining the word “sex” in state law as only male or female — joining Kansas and Tennessee, which have similar laws that LGBTQ+ advocates argue will deny legal recognition to nonbinary and transgender people. Medical professionals say the laws also ignore that some people are born as intersex — a term that encompasses about 60 conditions in which a person is born with genitalia, reproductive organs, chromosomes and/or hormone levels that don’t fit typical definitions of male or female. DOE Mobile-home Rule Won’t Save Planet, Will Make Housing More Expensive

A new Department of Energy (DOE) rule requiring mobile homes to be made more energy-efficient in order to reduce carbon emissions not only will have no effect on carbon emissions, but also will drive up the cost of such housing, making it unaffordable for many low-income households. The DOE’s rule — all 97 pages of it — requires mobile, or manufactured, homes to meet strict energy-conservation standards by improving insulation and sealing. The rule is set to take effect next Wednesday, barely more than a year after it was finalized. Click for Full Text!

Theft Is Now Costing Retailers in the United States About 100 Billion Dollars a Year

If we don’t fix this, will the retail industry be able to survive? There has always been shoplifting, but in the old days it was at a level that made it only a minor nuisance to the big box retailers. Unfortunately, now everything has changed. Highly organized gangs have developed extremely sophisticated plans for how to rapidly loot our major retailers, and the best ones can be in and out in just minutes. Those goods are then resold online or in the streets, and the amounts that we are talking about are absolutely staggering. In fact, as you will see below, theft is now costing retailers in this country about 100 billion dollars a year. This week, Target made headlines all over the ...

A bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced a bill that would require all new cars to include AM radio as many manufacturers have increasingly been phasing it out. A release from the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee on Thursday states Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who serves as the committee’s ranking member, and Ed Markey (D-Mass.), another committee member, are leading a group of nine other members of Congress from both parties to support the AM for Every Vehicle Act. Another Oregon County May Have Voted to Explore a Move to Idaho

Although not yet official, the Greater Idaho movement, which looks to move eastern Oregon counties into Idaho, a state more in tune with eastern Oregon’s political and cultural values, is claiming that the movement has grabbed a 12th county in its quest. Election-night totals show that Wallowa County in far northeast Oregon passed the measure by a slim margin of 1,721 “yes” votes to 1,700 “no” votes. However, Oregon law allows for ballots postmarked by 8:00 p.m. on election day to be counted if they arrive at election offices within seven days. Click for Full Text!
