The national Tea Party convention scheduled to take place in Nashville next month — featuring http://blogs.tennessean.com/politics/2009/sarah-palin-to-headline-tea-party-convention-in-nashville-gaylord-hosting/">Sarah Palin as its keynote speaker — fell into turmoil last week. http://www.teapartynation.com/">Tea Party Nation, the locally based group organizing the sold-out event, got its first taste of trouble Tuesday when a key volunteer announced he and others had quit the group. They claimed the event's $549 ticket price was designed to make a profit off the popularity of the grass-roots campaign. By week's end, the national media were putting intense ...

FBI broke law for years in phone record searches
Post Date: 2010-01-19 08:04:12 by A K A Stone

The FBI illegally collected more than 2,000 U.S. telephone call records between 2002 and 2006 by invoking terrorism emergencies that did not exist or simply persuading phone companies to provide records, according to internal bureau memos and interviews. FBI officials issued approvals after the fact to justify their actions. E-mails obtained by The Washington Post detail how counterterrorism officials inside FBI headquarters did not follow their own procedures that were put in place to protect civil liberties. The stream of urgent requests for phone records also overwhelmed the FBI communications analysis unit with work that ultimately was not connected to imminent threats. A Justice ...

MSNBC's Ed Schultz has a problem with democracy , Schultz: "I tell you what, if I lived in Massachusetts I'd try to vote 10 times.

MSNBC's Ed Schultz apparently doesn't believe in this whole "democracy" thing we've got going on here in the United States of America. You know — where citizens get to vote for their elected officials and the one with the most votes wins? (Please don't bore me with the "Gore won in 2000" whining. He didn't. In fact, it was his choice to go for a manual recount only in four cherry-picked Florida counties where he thought he might do best, rather than a statewide recount, because he knew Bush beat him in Florida.) On Friday on his radio show, Schultz said he would be willing to cheat in Tuesday's Massachusetts special election to fill the late ...

Brown leads Coakley 97% to 1% among registered Republicans and he leads 64% to 32% among unenrolled voters. Coakley leads Brown 73% to 23% among registered Democrats. Brown leads 53% to 43% among men while Coakley leads 50% to 46% among women.

MSNBC Calls on Mass. Voters to Cheat

The hysteria is growing in neighboring Massachusetts over a possible GOP win in the special election for US Senate. Pundits, who like to be with a winner, are quickly hedging their bets and suggesting Scott Brown could beat Democrat Martha Coakley. Yesterday, Representitive Patrick Kennedy repeatedly called her "Marcia" in continuing to offer his families backing. Along comes the disturbing remarks of one of NBC's leftist entourage who is advocating cheating to deny Brown a win. Ed Schultz is the most ardent of the MSNBC talkers and gives insight into how far partisans will go to impose their orthodoxy. Other screamers on behalf of Ms. Coakley, like the mayor of Boston, are ...

Every disaster plan is built to some degree around the idea of triage—deciding who can and cannot be saved. The worst cases are often separated and allowed to perish so that others who are considered more survivable can be treated. There is a tragic triage underway in Haiti thanks to screw-ups on the part of the US and western response, and in part because of the objectively tough conditions in Haiti that blocked access and made the delivery of food, water and services difficult. But the planners should have known that! Look at the TV coverage. “Saving Haiti” is the title CNN has given to its coverage. It shows us all the planes landing, and donations coming in and ...

Scott Brown leads Martha Coakley 51-46 in our final Massachusetts Senate poll, an advantage that is within the margin of error for the poll. Over the last week Brown has continued his dominance with independents and increased his ability to win over Obama voters as Coakley's favorability numbers have declined into negative territory. At the same time Democratic leaning voters have started to take more interest in the election, a trend that if it continues in the final 36 hours of the campaign could put her over the finish line. Here's what we found: -Brown is up 64-32 with independents and is winning 20% of the vote from people who supported Barack Obama in 2008 while Coakley is ...

Dear Union Members: Your Leadership Just Screwed Over The Rest Of America

In the latest to come out of D.C.’s backroom health care deals, President Obama yesterday cut a doozy of a deal with labor union bosses. The fed’s health care plan must be so bad that even union bosses had to go to D.C. to say they wanted out. So... to keep their support for a flawed plan they got an exemption to provisions in the deal that others did not. Small business owners, our families running America’s mom & pops, did not get this deal. Ask yourself: why did union bosses get special treatment? And when did our country’s unions get on the wrong track with moves like this that hurt their good members and put them in such a bad light? Good hard-working, ...

BOSTON, MA - Next Tuesday's Special Election for the U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts looks to be coming down to the wire. Surprising pundits in what had previously been thought to be a cakewalk for State Attorney General Martha Coakley, the Democratic candidate hoping to fill the seat of the late Senator Ted Kennedy, Republican state Senator Scott Brown has come on strong in the final days of the campaign. But as the election looms, tempers flare, money is poured into the contest from all sides, and Democrats sweat out what should have been a safe seat for them - a Democrat named Kennedy has held that particular seat for more than the last 50 years - questions about whether the ...

Democrats Hammered for 'Back-Room' Deal With Unions on Health Care

In pushing a giant step closer to a health care reform deal, Democratic leaders are once again drawing fire from their critics for extending special treatment to an interest group in exchange for its support of the bill. The latest deal was struck Thursday among the White House, Congress and union leaders over the proposed tax on high-value "Cadillac" health insurance plans." Unions had objected strongly to the proposed tax on high-value insurance policies, fearing it would hurt their members, and they won several concessions from the administration. Under the deal, if it becomes law, union workers will be shielded from the 40 percent tax for five years -- until 2018. The ...

Palin attacks Steele critics Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin chided critics of Michael Steele on Thursday night for “throwing stones” at the chairman of the Republican National Committee. Steele came under fire from his own party last week over a series of comments he made in interviews promoting the release of his book, including his prediction that the GOP will not win back the House. Adding to the chagrin of some Republicans, Steele did not inform other GOP leaders that he was even writing a book, which the RNC chairman has been painting as a blueprint for the GOP’s resurgence. Steele has made clear that he is not leaving the RNC, though that has not stopped some ...

Wednesday night: 46/44 Coakley. Thursday: 47/44 Brown. I don’t at all buy that PJM poll showing Brown up by 15, but ask me again on Monday. It’s sounding less absurd by the hour. We’d best enjoy this now, before The One blows into town with some of that Creigh Deeds magic and breaks our hearts. The last time a public poll showed a Republican leading a Massachusetts Senate race this close to the election was, well….never. There were no public polls released in the week leading up to the 1972 election, the last one won by a Republican (Ed Brooke, was re-elected in a landslide over John Droney). And since then, Democrats have enjoyed the stretch-run advantage in every ...

I met with First Lady Michelle Obama this week, at a small roundtable with six other reporters. We gathered in the White House's Old Family Dining Room--a golden-hued space decorated with oil paintings of former First Ladies, where she and the President have hosted small dinners including last spring's Passover Seder. In the wide-ranging conversation, Mrs. Obama was warm and relaxed as we rapidly fired questions about her first year in the White House. You can read my article about it on Essence.com, but here are a few extra highlights. A new poll taken Thursday evening for Pajamas Media by CrossTarget – an Alexandria VA survey research firm – shows Scott Brown, a Republican, leading Martha Coakley, a Democrat, by 15.4% in Tuesday’s special election for the open Massachusetts US Senate seat. The poll of 946 likely voters was conducted by telephone using interactive voice technology (IVR) and has a margin of error of +/- 3.19%. This is the first poll to show Brown surging to such an extent. A poll from the Suffolk University Political Research Center – published Thursday morning by the Boston Herald, but taken earlier – had Brown moving ahead by 4%. The special election is to fill the seat held by ...

The wild and reckless spending spree the U.S. government embarked on is not adding up, as the unemployment rate is still skyrocketing and recent reports indicate America is in danger of an additional recession, while the current recession-turned-depression is still going on. Too much wasteful spending and not enough taxation is a significant part of the problem. If wealthy Americans do not chip in more tax-wise, things will collapse to greater degrees. Spending is still quite unruly as well, with squandered opportunities to create lasting employment hampering national progress. Former chief United Nations weapons inspector Scott Ritter was arrested in a Pennsylvania sex sting in November on a litany of charges involving a lewd Internet conversation with a person he thought was a 15-year-old girl. Ritter, 48, allegedly masturbated in front of a Web camera while he was engaged in conversation in an Internet chat room with an undercover cop posing as the teenage girl. He declined to discuss the charges Thursday when reporters visited his New York residence. "I said there would be no comment," Ritter said, according to the Albany Times Union. Soldier at Ga. Base Jailed for Angry Rap Song SAVANNAH, Ga.—Angry that the military planned to send him back to Iraq past his date to leave the military, a Fort Stewart soldier recorded a hip-hop song that blasts the Army and describes going on a shooting spree, an act that led his commanders to decide the soldier posed a threat to his unit. The infantry soldier, Spc. Marc A. Hall, has been jailed on criminal charges in Liberty County, Ga., for the past month for a song and other statements that one of his lawyers insists were simply a form of protest. "They're saying it's a threat. We're saying it's a fantasy," said Jim Klimaski, a Washington civilian ...

Everybody should just relax and take it easy. Unsubstantiated rumors that Vice President Joe Biden had suddenly gone a little loopy and ordered some of his official meetings opened to at least cursory public or media attention were just that -- unsubstantiated rumors. After a recent public sighting, fears had mounted that the one-time, long-term senator might rebel against traditional White House strictures and start acting on all the administration's oft-promised promises of government transparency and official openness running back into 2008. But the VP's public schedule today puts all those fears to rest. In fact, loyal Ticket readers will recall that one day last summer with ...

Obama Gives Speeches, Interviews But Few Press Conferences Media Complain, But White House Insists Obama is Accessible By KAREN TRAVERS Jan. 14, 2010— There's a tug of war in every administration between the White House and the media that cover it. Reporters want more access and more quality time to question the president, while staffers want to control how the message plays. The two goals are quite often at odds. In the era of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and blogs, the Obama Administration has been savvy about how it communicates its message and seems to agree with the previous administration on at least one point: Go around the media filter and engage directly with the U.S. ...

Retail sales fall unexpectedly; jobless claims up

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Retail sales unexpectedly fell in December, leaving 2009 with the biggest yearly drop on record and highlighting the formidable hurdles facing the economy as it struggles to recover from the deepest recession in seven decades. In another disappointing economic report, the number of newly laid-off workers requesting unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week as jobs remain scarce. Still, many economists, puzzled by the retail sales decline that follows reports from retailers of brighter holidays, cautioned that the December figures don't necessarily signal a big consumer pullback and could be a blip. Taking November and December figures together ...
