Senate Dems Defeat GOP Attempt to Filibuster $1.1T Spending Bill [bill that rewards most federal agencies with generous budget boosts.]

WASHINGTON - The Democratic-controlled Senate on Saturday turned back a Republican effort to block a final vote on a huge end-of-year spending bill that rewards most federal agencies with generous budget boosts. The $1.1 trillion measure combines much of the year's unfinished budget work -- only a $626 billion Pentagon spending measure would remain -- into a 1,000-plus-page spending bill that would give the Education Department, the State Department, the Department of Health and Human Services and others increases far exceeding inflation. The 60-34 vote largely along party lines met the minimum threshold to end the Republican filibuster, a legislative maneuver to delay a final vote ...

Incredible Charges that the Creation Museum promotes “Terrorism” and “Child Abuse” Enquiring of the Enquirer

Wouldn’t you think that when an organization is accused in a major American newspaper of promoting “child abuse” and even “terrorism,” that it would be given the opportunity to have its rebuttal printed in that newspaper? Last month, an atheist leader told our local newspaper, the Cincinnati Enquirer, that our Creation Museum promotes “child abuse” and even “terrorism.” (We commented on this here on our site.) Many letters to the editors were submitted to the Enquirer about this atheist and his local group and their efforts to erect atheist billboards in the Cincinnati area and also their public protests in front of our museum (twice now). With Benefits, Average Federal Worker Salaries Double Private Sector Wage

WASHINGTON, D.C. (YBH.ME) – The internet news machine is abuzz this morning over a USA TODAY article in which it is revealed that federal workers earn an average salary of $71,206 vs. $40,331 for private sector employees.  While those numbers are striking, an even more disconnected figure is available. According to the CATO Institute, when benefits are included, federal workers earn far more than those in the private sector and the disparity is growing. Federal employee wages surge versus private sector. The CATO study, released in September, puts the average federal civilian salary with benefits at $119,982 vs. $59,909 for the private sector.   Federal government ...

President Obama has recorded an all-time low job approval rating in six of the seven: Quinnipiac 46% Marist 46% CNN/Opinion Research 48% Ipsos/McClatchy 49% CBS News/NY Times 50% Bloomberg* 54% Only one poll - FOX News/Opinion Dynamics - showed in increase in President Obama's job approval rating over the last month. In the current survey, FOX has Obama at 50% approval, up from his all-time low of 46% recorded in last month's poll. New York Times raises eyebrows with gift guide for people 'of color'Thu Dec 10, 6:37 pm ET A new addition to the New York Times annual Holiday Gift Guide has sparked a minor uproar after a blog devoted to critiquing the paper termed it "racist." Included in this year's guide, which was published in November, is a page titled "Of Color/Stylish Gifts." This first-time feature is described by the paper as "gifts created for and by people of color." After going virtually unnoticed by critics for a month, the guide's been widely slammed in the past week as a collection of "backhanded insults" which are "bordering ...

Americans Want Government to Spend for Jobs, Send Bill to Rich By Mike Dorning and Catherine Dodge Dec. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Americans want their government to create jobs through spending on public works, investments in alternative energy or skills training for the jobless. They also want the deficit to come down. And most are ready to hand the bill to the wealthy. A Bloomberg National Poll conducted Dec. 3-7 shows two- thirds of Americans favor taxing the rich to reduce the deficit. Even though almost 9 of 10 respondents also say they believe the middle class will have to make financial sacrifices to achieve that goal, only a little more than one-fourth support an increase in taxes on ...

Joe Biden praised Sen. Chris Dodd Friday, but conceded his good friend - one of the Senate's most vulnerable Democrats - is "getting the living hell beat of him." The vice president made his comments at a fundraiser for Dodd Friday in Hartford, Connecticut. Dodd had been scheduled to accompany Biden at the fundraiser and at event earlier in the day to announce nearly $4 million in federal stimulus funding to replace an aging fire station in East Hartford, but stayed in the nation's capital to work on health care reform legislation and other Senate business. The five-term senator, who's up for re-election next year and fighting for his political life, was replaced by ...

Some fear demand for conservative 'purity' will hurt the GOP

TAMPA - An increasingly fractious challenge to the Republican Party from its own conservative base could relegate the party to indefinite minority status, some Republicans fear. It's showing up in the form of conservative primary challengers against candidates blessed by the party establishment – a strange phenomenon in a party known for tightly controlled, wait-your-turn politics. Some Republicans fear the divisive primaries could leave GOP voters divided and dispirited, or push to the party so far right it alienates mainstream voters. "If you tried to devise a strategy for destroying the Republican Party in Florida, you couldn't do much better than this," said ...

DEARBORN, Mich. — Army recruiter Sgt. Chris McGarity is on the front lines of the military's effort to add troops who speak Arabic and understand Middle Eastern culture — a battle that grew more challenging after the shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. McGarity says he recently signed up an Arab-American high school student who lacked only her parents' approval to enlist. Then came the Nov. 5 rampage at Fort Hood. The Army has charged Maj. Nidal Hasan, 39, a Muslim and Arab American, with killing 13 people and wounding 32. The high school student's mother "made her withdraw her application," McGarity says. Such experiences illustrate heightened fears of ...

The number of federal workers earning six-figure salaries has exploded during the recession, according to a USA TODAY analysis of federal salary data. Federal employees making salaries of $100,000 or more jumped from 14% to 19% of civil servants during the recession's first 18 months — and that's before overtime pay and bonuses are counted. Federal workers are enjoying an extraordinary boom time — in pay and hiring — during a recession that has cost 7.3 million jobs in the private sector. As the Obama administration slowly unveils its global AIDS plan, the drive to put more people on drugs is being scaled back as emphasis is shifted to prevention and to diseases that cost less to fight, including pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria and fatal birth complications. AIDS advocates complained bitterly that they had been betrayed and that the Bush administration’s best legacy was being gutted—and they blame a doctor and budget adviser who is also the brother of the White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. “I’m holding my nose as I say this, but I miss George W. But when a lawsuit between Native American and the U.S. government settles for $3.4 billion, well, we sit up and take serious notice. The federal government announced on Tuesday that it intends to pay that sum to settle claims that it has mismanaged the revenue in American Indian trust funds. ...

Most significantly, among women the Alaska Republican has only a 37 percent favorable rating compared to a 51 percent unfavorable. WASHINGTON – Union leaders, among the most passionate backers of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, pressed Democratic senators Thursday to drop a tax on high-value insurance plans to pay for remaking the nation's system. Members of several labor unions denounced the proposed tax on so-called "Cadillac plans," arguing it wouldn't just hit CEOs but also middle-class Americans who did without salary increases to negotiate better health benefits. In 1998, when the Clinton White House found itself in the middle of the Lewinsky scandal, one of its key defense strategies was to attack the conservative philanthropist Richard Mellon Scaife as the dark power behind the allegations against the president. The Clinton camp believed Scaife to be "the Goldfinger of the right-wing conspiracy," as Newsweek put it in a February 1998 report. Now it's the Obama White House that is in trouble. The president isn't engulfed in scandal, but his political fortunes are waning, with historically low job approval ratings for this point in his term and an administration struggling to pass its initiatives, even with big Democratic ...

House Approves Omnibus Spending Bill That Funds Abortions in Nation's Capital

The House of Representatives on Thursday approved an omnibus spending bill that would overturn a decades-long policy preventing taxpayer funding of abortions in the nation's capital. One pro-life group suggests overturning the policy could increase abortions by as much as 1,000 a year. The Dornan Amendment has prevented the federal government from paying for abortions in the District of Columbia, whose budget is overseen by Congress. But the omnibus spending bill, a collection of appropriations bills needed to fund the federal government, includes language overturning the amendment. House members approved the omnibus bill on a vote of 221-202-1 despite calls from pro-life groups to ...

A New York appellate court last week harshly rejected the state's effort to take property from businesses in upper Manhattan and give it to Columbia University for its campus expansion, calling it a "scheme" hatched by the university and the state and labeling their arguments in favor of invoking eminent domain, the government power to seize private property, as "mere sophistry." Yet for decades the state has confiscated private property on the slimmest of pretexts, often vastly underpaying, and in the process ruined businesses and lives. The Institute for Justice, an Arlington, Va.-based, public-interest group, recently called New York one of the worst ...

WASHINGTON — Black lawmakers who have held their tongues during most of President Barack Obama's first year in office are stepping up their demands that the nation's first black president do more for minority communities hit hardest by the recession. While still careful about criticizing Obama publicly, they appear to be losing their patience after a year of watching him dedicate trillions of dollars to prop up banks and corporations and fight wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, while double-digit unemployment among blacks crept even higher. "Obama has tried desperately to stay away from race, and all of us understand what he's doing," said Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo. ...
