House Panel Supports Bilingual Voting Post Date: 2006-05-10 20:14:23 by A K A Stone

What was to have been a simple renewal of the historic Voting Rights Act has become snarled in the heated debate involving immigration issues. Conservative House members tried Wednesday to end a requirement in the 1965 law that bilingual ballots and interpreters be provided in states and counties where large numbers of citizens speak limited English. The House Judiciary Committee rejected the effort. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, said voting in English should pose no problem for any U.S. citizen. "If you are born in America, you should know English," he said. "If you are a naturalized citizen, you should have passed an English proficiency test." The committee voted ...

Nearly half of the nation's children under 5 are racial or ethnic minorities, and the percentage is increasing mainly because the Hispanic population is growing so rapidly, according to a census report released today. Hispanics are the nation's largest and fastest-growing minority group. They accounted for 49 percent of the country's growth from 2004 to 2005, the report shows. And the increase in young children is largely a Hispanic story, driving 70 percent of the growth in children younger than 5. Forty-five percent of U.S. children younger than 5 are minorities. The new numbers offer a preview of demographic shifts to come, with broad implications for the nation's schools, workforce ...

Hillary Clinton defended her warming relationship on Tuesday with Rupert Murdoch, the conservative media mogul. Commenting on Mr Murdoch's decision to host a fundraiser for her Senate-election campaign, Mrs Clinton said: "He's my constituent and I'm very gratified that he thinks I'm doing a good job." Mr Murdoch's New York Post tabloid newspaper initially attacked the New York Democrat's decision to stand for the Senate, running front-page headlines pleading "Don't Run". Mrs Clinton is the leading Democratic candidate for president in 2008. But one person involved in the event said Mr Murdoch's decision to support her reflected his opinion of her as a senator for New ...

Bush approval rating hits new low Only four presidents have scored a lower approval rating in a Gallup survey than Bush's current 31% number. WASHINGTON President Bush's approval rating has slumped to 31% in a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, the lowest of his presidency and a warning sign for Republicans in the November elections. The survey of 1,013 adults, taken Friday through Sunday, shows Bush's standing down by 3 percentage points in a single week. His disapproval rating also reached a record: 65%. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points. "It is a challenging political environment," acknowledges Tracey Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the Republican National ...

That has a kind of familiar ring to it doesn't it? Get used to this new permutation of a very old trope. It's about to enter the lexicon. Predictably, like the Trotskyites about whom the fathers of the modern conservative movement obsessed, (and the fathers of the neocons were) the modern conservatives are reaching the point at which that sad rationalization is all they have to hang on to. There is a very interesting discussion taking place all over the left blogosphere about how the conservatives have discovered that the entire Republican establishment, particularly the George W. Bush administration, are liberals. Glenn Greenwald has been directly taking on Jonah Goldberg on this subject ...
Spy vs. Spy Post Date: 2006-05-05 20:34:21 by A K A Stone

Neighbors spying on neighbors? Mothers forced to turn in their sons or daughters? These are images straight out of George Orwell's 1984, or a remote totalitarian state. We don't associate them with the land of the free and the home of the brave, but that doesn't mean they couldn't happen here. A senior congressman, James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), is working quietly but efficiently to turn the entire United States population into informants--by force. Sensenbrenner, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee Chairman, has introduced legislation that would essentially draft every American into the war on drugs. H.R. 1528, cynically named "Safe Access to Drug Treatment and Child Protection ...
Bush ignored advice to send more troops: Powell Post Date: 2006-04-30 14:53:05 by A K A Stone

LONDON -- Former U.S. secretary of state Colin Powell advised President George W. Bush before the Iraq war to send more troops to the country but the administration did not follow his recommendation, Powell said in an interview broadcast Sunday. Critics accuse Bush and U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld of failing to send enough soldiers to secure the peace in Iraq after the invasion three years ago. Powell said he gave the advice to now-retired general Tommy Franks, who developed and executed the Iraq invasion plan, and Rumsfeld while the president was present. "I made the case to Gen. Franks and Secretary Rumsfeld before the president that I was not sure we had enough ...

NEW YORK (AP) - Tens of thousands of protesters marched Saturday through lower Manhattan to demand an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, just hours after this month's death toll reached 70. Cindy Sheehan, a vociferous critic of the war whose soldier son also died in Iraq, joined in the march, as did actress Susan Sarandon and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. "End this war, bring the troops home," read one sign lifted by marchers on the sunny afternoon, three years after the war in Iraq began. The mother of a Marine killed two years ago in Iraq held a picture of her son, born in 1984 and killed 20 years later. One group marched under the banner "Veterans for Peace." ...

"The case is resolved," Vick's attorney, V. Lawrence Woodward, said Monday. "That's all I can say." Cale Conley, attorney for plaintiff Sonya Elliott, used the same words to acknowledge the settlement and also declined any further comment. The attorneys did not provide any information as to when the agreement was reached or terms of the resolution. Neither side would confirm a confidentiality agreement with the settlement. A gag ...

Apple Computers says Web writers not legitimate journalists Post Date: 2006-04-21 16:28:02 by A K A Stone

A California court in San Jose on Thursday is scheduled to hear a case brought by Apple Computer that eventually could answer an unsettled legal question: Should online journalists receive the same rights as traditional reporters? Apple claims they should not. Its lawyers say in court documents that Web scribes are not "legitimate members of the press" when they reveal details about forthcoming products that the company would prefer to keep confidential. Advertisement That argument has drawn stiff opposition from bloggers and traditional journalists. But it did seem to be sufficient to convince Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge James P. Kleinberg, who ruled in March 2005 ...
Looking Forward to $5 a Gallon Gasoline? If so, Vote Democrat in November Post Date: 2006-04-21 15:43:36 by alwaysontheright

"endangered" species enjoy stroll on Alaska Pipeline As gasoline prices soar higher and higher, America's political leaders should be working to solve the supply and demand imbalance, the root- cause of skyrocketing oil prices. Unfortunately, the Democrat party is adamantly opposed to measures that would increase the supply of this precious commodity. Why? Because environmental elitists like Al Gore have decided that average Americans should not drive automobiles. In Gore's warped vision, the unwashed masses can damn well walk, skateboard, bike, hike or, preferably, not navigate at all. Except when headed to the polls to vote for Democrats, of course! Mind you, ...

The word inside Capitol Hill is that President Bush personally met with Senate and House leaders from both parties and demanded that they keep the ranks silent on China. The move by President Bush followed a flurry of activity over a no-bid contract awarded to Hutchison Whampoa for the operation of a sophisticated radiation detection system in the Bahamas. The president reportedly told Democrat and Republican leaders to silence critics of the deal in Congress. The problem with the ...
Ben Affleck: Bush 'Can Be Hung' for 'Probably' Leaking Plame's Name Post Date: 2006-04-10 11:15:03 by A K A Stone

Reminiscent of Al Franken on the Late Show last October, on Friday's Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO, actor Ben Affleck charged that President Bush probably also leaked Valerie Plame's name and so if he did, you can be hung for that! That's treason! In full rant, an apoplectic Affleck asserted: You could be killed. That's not a joking around Tom DeLay 'I'll do a year, I bribed the state officials with corporate money.' That's like they shoot you in the battlefield for doing that. Affleck appeared on Maher's panel with Senator Joe Biden and Bill Sammon of the Washington Examiner. A couple of minutes later, after Sammon suggested Tom DeLay's resignation ...
Lawyer: Bush Left Leak Details to Cheney Post Date: 2006-04-09 01:07:22 by A K A Stone

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush declassified sensitive intelligence in 2003 and authorized its public disclosure to rebut Iraq war critics, but he did not specifically direct that Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, be the one to disseminate the information, an attorney knowledgeable about the case said Saturday. Bush merely instructed Cheney to "get it out" and left the details to him, said the lawyer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case for the White House. The vice president chose Libby and communicated the president's wishes to his then-top aide, the lawyer said. It is not known when the conversation ...

A bill requiring students to learn about the contributions homosexuals have made to society and that could remove gender-specific terms including "mom" and "dad" from textbooks is making progress in California. The state's Senate Judiciary Committee has approved SB 1437, which would mandate grades 1-12 buy books "accurately'' portraying "the sexual diversity of our society.'' It also requires students hear history lessons on "the contributions of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender to the economic, political, and social development of California and the United States of America.'' It also precludes textbooks, teaching materials, ...

JOHN W LILLPOP San Jose, CA Mr. President, Honorable Members of Congress: Because our government has failed to secure America57;s borders and enforce our immigration laws, our nation is struggling to deal with 15-20 million aliens who have entered this great nation illegally. Many are 60;good-hearted, hard working61; folks, simply looking for a better life. However, that description also applies to millions of others throughout the world, just as eager for a chance at the American Dream. But while America is overwhelmed with illegal aliens from Latin nations, 60;good-hearted, hard working61; people in other parts of the world are ordered to stand in line, wait their turn, and do that which ...
GOP in danger of losing control of Congress, Gingrich says Post Date: 2006-04-02 22:46:29 by A K A Stone

WASHINGTON - A dozen years after he engineered his party's takeover of Congress, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warned Friday that his fellow Republicans could be swept out of power themselves. "They are seen by the country as being in charge of a government that can't function," he told Knight Ridder editors and reporters in a wide-ranging luncheon interview. "We could lose control this fall." He cited a series of blunders under Republican rule, from failures in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to mismanagement of the war in Iraq. He said the immigration bill passed by his former colleagues in the House of Representatives is unrealistic and too harsh toward ...
THE SEDITIONIST LEADERLESS RESISTANCE Post Date: 2006-03-31 17:18:20 by A K A Stone

The concept of Leaderless Resistance was proposed by Col. Ulius Louis Amoss, who was the founder of International Service of Information Incorporated, located in Baltimore, Maryland. Col. Amoss died more than fifteen years ago, but during his life was a tireless opponent of communism, as well as a skilled Intelligence Officer. Col. Amoss first wrote of Leaderless Resistance on April 17, 1962. His theories of organization were primarily directed against the threat of eventual Communist take-over in the United States. The present writer, with the benefit of having lived many years beyond Col. Amoss, has taken his theories and expounded upon them. Col. Amoss feared the Communists. This author ...
