North Texas school district will let teachers carry guns
Post Date: 2008-08-16 00:46:32 by A K A Stone

HARROLD, Texas — A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to allow teachers and staff to pack guns for protection when classes begin later this month, a newspaper reported. Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements. In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and have to use ammunition ...

Ohio voting law may be a boon for Obama supporters

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Never mind the last days of the presidential campaign. The busiest days for Barack Obama's campaign in this perennial swing state are likely to be a month before Election Day. Ohio has created a window in the election calendar that would allow residents instant gratification — register one minute, vote the next. It's also given the campaigns of Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain a chance to bank thousands of first-time voters during that Sept. 30 to Oct. 6 window. The move will benefit Obama, who enjoys a 2-to-1 lead over McCain among 18- to 34-year-olds, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released last month. If Obama's campaign ...

Apple can remotely disable App Store applications

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has confirmed that the company can remotely disable software purchased from the App Store. Jobs said the mechanism was necessary because Apple may inadvertently allow malicious programs to be sold through the App store and those programs could steal user's personal data. "Hopefully, we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull," Jobs said in the interview. Last week hacker Jonathan Zdziarski first discovered that the iPhone periodically checks back with a specific Apple web page which then sends back data of which applications should be removed. ...

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. -- Some workers at a local plant will no longer to be able to take their Labor Day holiday because of religious reasons. Workers at the Tyson Foods poultry processing plant in Shelbyville will no longer have a paid day off on Labor Day but will instead be granted the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr. According to a news release from the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, a new five-year contract at the plant included the change to accommodate Muslim workers at the plant. Tyson's director of media relations Gary Mickelson said the contract includes eight paid holidays -- the same number as the old contract. Eid al-Fitr -- which falls on Oct. 1 this year -- ...

Unique law lets police seize guns before a crime is committed

HARTFORD -- Using a unique state law, police in Connecticut have disarmed dozens of gun owners based on suspicions that they might harm themselves or others. The state's gun seizure law is considered the first and only law in the country that allows the confiscation of a gun before the owner commits an act of violence. Police and state prosecutors can obtain seizure warrants based on concerns about someone's intentions. State police and 53 police departments have seized more than 1,700 guns since the law took effect in October 1999, according to a new report to the legislature. There are nearly 900,000 privately owned firearms in Connecticut today. Opponents of a gun seizure law ...

The Army's Banana Peel Weaponry
Post Date: 2008-08-02 17:11:05 by A K A Stone

The Army's new XM1063 artillery round will "suppress, disperse or engage personnel" over a wide area and "deny personnel access to, use of, or movement through a particular area, point or facility." But how does it work, really? Some believe it's a kind of chemical weapon; others have suggested an anti-traction agent that will coat the entire area with instant banana peel so it becomes more slippery than an ice-rink and controlled movement (by people and vehicles) is impossible. US Army work in this area goes back at least to the Korean War. But the latest round of research dates back to the 1990's and the rise of weapons that are designed to hurt, not to ...

Consenting to be Abused The problem with "voluntary" roadside searches

If I approach as you pull into a parking space and ask if you'd mind my rummaging through your car, the chances are at least 90 percent that you'd decline. But if a police officer stops you with the same request, the chances are higher than 90 percent that you'd agree. Something about that badge makes citizens eager to be helpful. Or maybe not. In civics class and Fourth of July speeches, we are told that American democracy rests on the consent of the governed. But interactions with the police serve as a useful reminder that government rests less on voluntary cooperation than on fear and force. A nation is free to the extent it prevents the rulers from bullying and coercing the ...

Google Says Privacy Doesn’t Exist, Get Used To Everyone Knowing Everything About You

The headline practically says it all. Google is being sued by a Pittsburgh couple for posting images of its house on the Internet in Google's Street Views pages. Google responded, in court no less, that complete privacy simply doesn't exist in today's world and the couple should stop crying about it. Google may be right, in theory. It said in papers filed with the court, "Today's satellite image technology means that even in today's desert, complete privacy does not exist." That's partially true. With satellites, cameras and other monitoring devices all being tied together by the Internet, it is becoming more and more difficult to completely isolate ...

Louisianians Cash In on Gas Rush

MANSFIELD, La. — They had to repeat the amazing number, $28.7 million, over and over, to make sure it was real and would not go away. Even then, the members of the De Soto Parish Police Jury — the county commission — could hardly believe it. They laughed, rocked back in their chairs, shook their heads, stared at the ceiling and muttered oaths to each other. “We have — $28.7 million,” said the president, Bryant Yopp, to settle the matter, definitively if still incredulously. It was nearly one and a half times the parish’s entire annual budget. A no-holds-barred, all-American gold rush for natural gas is under way in this forgotten corner of the South, and ...

A Kansas church well-known for its protests at the funerals of fallen American soldiers plans to picket at this week's funeral of former Press Secretary Tony Snow, declaring that Snow is "a very bad monkey" who is "now burning in hell." "He had a platform, he was given some small talent by his Creator. He was an unfaithful steward, and is now residing in hell," says a schedule on the website of the Westboro Baptist Church. "Each opportunity he had to faithfully report what the servants at WBC had to tell this country/world, Tony Snow besmirched and vilified the words of God and the people of God. Thereby being a party to the crime of passing laws to ...

Hunting the diminutive DRAGON

The hunters fanned out across a meadow in northern Minnesota on Saturday, their eyes scanning the grass for a swift, ancient and elusive beastie with a reputation for wickedness and ferocity. They were looking for Odonata — "the toothed ones" in Latin — a reference to vicious teeth used to tear chunks of flesh from their prey. With an athletic spring and a swoop of the net, a hunter snared one of the predators. The captive's bulging, green eyes blazed in the sunlight with alien hostility. "It's already on our list. Do you want to keep it for our teaching collection?" asked one of the hunters. "I've already got a lot of Emeralds," said ...

Housing bailout includes new fingerprint demand

Mortgage lenders and brokers and even office assistants and secretaries could be subjected to new federal demands to be fingerprinted under a provision of a massive housing bailout plan – with attachments – that is moving through Congress. An alert about the fingerprinting requirement comes from John Berlau, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship, Competitive Enterprise Institute in Washington. "We are creating this burden that adds risks of identity theft with really no additional safeguards," he told WND of the plan included in the housing bailout, which was advanced in the U.S. Senate today on an 84-12 vote. The bill was launched to address the wave of failing ...

hose who oppose homosexuality for religious reasons are participating in "hate," according to an official for McDonald's, the worldwide purveyor of Big Macs and Happy Meals. "Hatred has no place in our culture," corporate spokesman Bill Whitman told the Washington Post in response to a campaign by the American Family Association for a boycott of the burger-and-fries outlets because of the corporation's advocacy for the homosexual lifestyle. "That includes McDonald's, and we stand by and support our people to live and work in a society free of discrimination and harassment," Whitman said. Nearly Half of Americans Think President Can Suspend Constitution

Ah, yes. Public eduction has performed an essential wonder, that is a wonder in the minds of our globalist rulers: Nearly half (49%) of Americans think the president has the authority to suspend the Constitution, according to Rick Shenkman’s new book, “Just How Stupid Are We?: Facing the Truth About the American Voter.” Other astounding and disturbing facts: – Only 2 in 5 voters can name the three branches of the federal government. – Only 1 in 7 can find Iraq on a map. – Only 1 in 5 know that there are 100 federal senators. I can forgive them for not knowing the number of senators, but not knowing the three branches of government? If true, we are indeed ...

We must instill in the next generation a belief that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and teach them to value discourse and nonviolent conflict resolution. [1] By and large most people living on the face of this earth have not embraced globalism. Many have seen the harsh direct effects of globalism. Today our dollar has lost most of its buying power, inflation is raging out of control and we do not produce enough food or clothing for our very survival. In the name of globalism we are being sacrificed while in another nation they are prospering temporarily off of our suffering. The concept of a ‘cosmopolitan citizenship’ (often interchangeable with global ...

Log Cabin President Patrick Sammon confirmed in an e-mail yesterday to the Gay Patriot, the self described "Internet home for the American gay conservative," that he had a personal meeting with McCain: We've had a series of productive meetings with the campaign since Sen. McCain won the nomination – including a recent meeting with the Senator. We expect to have more conversations with the campaign as we head toward November. A Log Cabin insider claimed the ...

Recording Industry Decries AM-FM Broadcasting as 'A Form of Piracy'

The recording industry and U.S. radio companies have squared off for decades about whether AM and FM radio broadcasters should pay royalties to singers, musicians and their labels. But now the debate is getting meaner; there's more at stake as the recording industry seeks new income avenues in the wake of wanton peer-to-peer piracy and declining CD sales in part due to the iPod and satellite radio. A U.S. House subcommittee could vote as early as Thursday on a royalty measure. On Monday, the recording industry sent the National Association of Broadcasters -- the trade group representing the $16 billion a year AM-FM broadcasting business -- a can of herring to underscore that it ...

Rising fuel prices has caused shipping costs to more than double, making local manufacturing a more affordable option for some companies.
