Obama breaks campaign promise; Obama OKs taxing high-end health plans Post Date: 2010-01-07 05:16:42 by A K A Stone

WASHINGTON President Barack Obama signaled to House Democratic leaders Wednesday that they'll have to drop their opposition to taxing high-end health insurance plans to pay for health coverage for millions of uninsured Americans. In a meeting at the White House, Obama expressed his preference for the insurance tax contained in the Senate's health overhaul bill, but largely opposed by House Democrats and organized labor, Democratic aides said. The aides spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was private. House Democrats want to raise income taxes on high-income individuals instead and are reluctant to abandon that approach, while recognizing that they will have ...

WASHINGTON White House national security adviser James Jones says Americans will feel "a certain shock" when they read an account being released Thursday of the missed clues that could have prevented the alleged Christmas Day bomber from ever boarding the plane. President Obama "is legitimately and correctly alarmed that things that were available, bits of information that were available, patterns of behavior that were available, were not acted on," Jones said in an interview Wednesday with USA TODAY. "That's two strikes," Obama's top White House aide on defense and foreign policy issues said, referring to the foiled bombing of the ...
Air Force Completes Killer Micro-Drone Project Post Date: 2010-01-05 08:51:41 by A K A Stone

The Air Force Research Laboratory set out in 2008 to build the ultimate assassination robot: a tiny, armed drone for U.S. special forces to employ in terminating high-value targets. The military wont say exactly what happened to this Project Anubis, named after a jackal-headed god of the dead in Egyptian mythology. But military budget documents note that Air Force engineers were successful in develop[ing] a Micro-Air Vehicle (MAV) with innovative seeker/tracking sensor algorithms that can engage maneuvering high-value targets. We have seen in recent years increased strikes by larger Predator and Reaper drones using Hellfire missiles against ...
What if I told you I am running for President? Post Date: 2010-01-05 07:49:57 by BobCeleste

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010 What if I told you I am running for President? Now let me say this first. If God decides I should be president of these United States, there is nothing anyone can do to prevent it. If He decides I am not to be president of these United States there is nothing I can do to even get my wife to vote for me. All of that said, and giving God all of the credit, win or lose, I am now a candidate for President of these United States. And here is my campaign. I know that the most important job the President has is that of Commander in Chief of the US military. I know that the oath he takes states that he will defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and ...

While we were all out doing our Christmas shopping, the highest court in the land quietly put the kibosh on a few more of the remaining shards of human liberty. It happened earlier this week, in a discreet ruling that attracted almost no notice and took little time. In fact, our most august defenders of the Constitution did not have to exert themselves in the slightest to eviscerate not merely 220 years of Constitutional jurisprudence but also centuries of agonizing effort to lift civilization a few inches out of the blood-soaked mire that is our common human legacy. They just had to write a single sentence. Here's how the bad deal went down. After hearing passionate arguments from ...

NEW YORK A fraternal group for police officers and other law enforcement buffs said Friday that it doesn't know how one of its identification placards ended up in the window of a van that caused a security scare in Times Square. Police Department officials said traffic agents and officers apparently overlooked a van parked illegally on Broadway for at least two days because of the windshield placard from a nonprofit group called the Detectives Crime Clinic of New Jersey and New York. A private security guard finally grew suspicious Wednesday because the van had no license plates and blacked-out windows. Police blocked off part of the square for hours while a bomb squad examined ...

On his first trip home as commander in chief, President Barack Obama, whom Hawaiians call a favorite "child of the land," has gone underground. At Zippy's, a fast-food outlet in the Moilili neighborhood, a group of 2007 graduates from Mr. Obama's alma mater, Punahou High, weren't sure Wednesday whether the president was still in town. Marisa Tricas, a college student from nearby Manoa, said Mr. Obama visited so often as a senator and candidate that teachers had to force students to attend his speeches. "I'm proud he's representing Hawaii," she said, but "I kind of miss him." During their vacation, the Obamas have secluded themselves in a ...

Former Republican Rep. J.D. Hayworth continues to tease about his possible 2010 political ambitions. Hayworth, who became a radio talk show host after losing his 2006 House re-election bid, has been talking about possibly challenging Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in next year's GOP Senate primary. On his KFYI radio show Monday, Hayworth told his listeners that he went to Washington, D.C., this month and "we may have moved past due diligence into something that is more than a legal term of art . . . something called 'testing the waters.' So stay tuned on that." Federal Election Commission regulations allow candidates to set up preliminary "testing-the-waters" ...

WASHINGTON — With the health-care battle still unfinished, the Obama administration has been laying plans to take up an issue that could prove even more divisive — a major overhaul of the nation's immigration system.
Senior White House aides privately have assured Latino activists that the president will back legislation next year to provide a path to citizenship for the estimated 12 million undocumented workers now living in the United States.
In addition to the citizenship provision, the emerging plan will stress efforts to secure U.S. borders against those trying to cross illegally. But that two-track approach was rejected repeatedly in the past by Republicans and other critics ...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- As the government reviews how an alleged terrorist was able to bring a bomb onto a U.S.-bound plane and try to blow it up on Christmas Day, the Transportation Security Administration is going after bloggers who wrote about a directive to increase security after the incident. TSA special agents served subpoenas to travel bloggers Steve Frischling and Chris Elliott, demanding that they reveal who leaked the security directive to them. The government says the directive was not supposed to be disclosed to the public. Frischling said he met with two TSA special agents Tuesday night at his Connecticut home for about three hours and again on Wednesday morning when he was ...

Two bloggers received home visits from Transportation Security Administration agents Tuesday after they published a new TSA directive that revises screening procedures and puts new restrictions on passengers in the wake of a recent bombing attempt by the so-called underwear bomber. Special agents from the TSAs Office of Inspection interrogated two U.S. bloggers, one of them an established travel columnist, and served them each with a civil subpoena demanding information on the anonymous source that provided the TSA document. The document, which the two bloggers published within minutes of each other Dec. 27, was sent by TSA to airlines and airports around the world and described ...
Fat Ugly Lesbian Looking Judge Illegally Acts Calling For Palentry To Restore Budget Cuts Post Date: 2009-12-30 19:10:03 by A K A Stone

A Minnesota judge ruled Wednesday that Gov. Tim Pawlenty "crossed the line" when he cut billions from the state budget on his own, ordering his administration to restore money to a food program for the poor. The ruling from Ramsey County District Judge Kathleen Gearin only deals directly with a small slice of $2.7 billion in cuts the Republican governor announced this summer. But her accompanying explanation criticizes his strategy to slice the budget without input from the Legislature. Pawlenty was using an executive authority known as unallotment. Gearin wrote that Pawlenty "crossed the line between legitimate exercise of his authority to unallot and interference with the ...

The U.S. government had intelligence from Yemen before Christmas that leaders of a branch of Al Qaeda there were talking about "a Nigerian" being prepared for a terrorist attack, the New York Times reported Tuesday. A senior official told the Times that President Obama was told in a private meeting Tuesday while vacationing in Hawaii that the government had a variety of information in its possession before the thwarted bombing on a Detroit-bound flight last week that would have been a clear warning sign had it been shared among intelligence agencies. The newspaper said the information did not include the name of the Nigerian. A CIA official prepared a report on Umar Farouk ...

(AP) MOSCOW (AP) - Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Russia will build new weapons to offset the planned U.S. missile defense and urged Washington to share detailed data about its missile shield under a new arms control deal. Putin's remarks posted on the Cabinet's Web site set a defiant tone and signaled new difficulties in talks between the two nations on a successor to the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty that expired on Dec. 5. Moscow and Washington had hoped to strike a deal before the end of the year but problems persist. Putin's comments also showed that the former Russian president is continuing to shape Russian foreign policy, which under the ...
