Reporter restrained after Panetta hearing

Following Leon Panetta’s confirmation hearing Thursday, several reporters approached the CIA director-designate in the hallway outside room G-50 in the Dirksen Building. There, CongressDaily reporter Chris Strohm — upon asking a question — was physically restrained by a man who accompanied Panetta at hearings both days. Strohm, when reached by phone Friday, said he was unsure of the man’s role. “I felt this hand grab my right arm and push me aside,” Strohm said. By his account, Strohm told the man, “Please don’t touch me” more than once. Eventually, the man let him go. Tim Starks, a reporter for Congressional Quarterly, said he witnessed ...

Fla. doctor investigated in badly botched abortion

Eighteen and pregnant, Sycloria Williams went to an abortion clinic outside Miami and paid $1,200 for Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique to terminate her 23-week pregnancy. Three days later, she sat in a reclining chair, medicated to dilate her cervix and otherwise get her ready for the procedure. Only Renelique didn't arrive in time. According to Williams and the Florida Department of Health, she went into labor and delivered a live baby girl. What Williams and the Health Department say happened next has shocked people on both sides of the abortion debate: One of the clinic's owners, who has no medical license, cut the infant's umbilical cord. Williams says the woman placed ...

Miriam English Look out into deep space and you'll see objects whose light left them a long time ago ago. In 1929 Edwin Hubble published his finding of redshifts in the light of distant objects. The more distant an object was, the greater its redshift. It seemed natural to many to assume that this redshift is the result of those objects speeding away from us. This always struck me as simplistic. The reasoning goes this way: If all these things are speeding away from each other, then in the past they must have been closer together. Extrapolating backwards, so the thinking goes, you should reach some point of origin -- the source of the universe! This seems incredibly naïve, and ...

Democratic Leaders Said to Prepare ‘Buy American’ Compromise

Feb. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Congressional leaders, trying to quell a dispute over “Buy American” provisions in the stimulus package, are crafting a version that would apply only when they don’t violate trade rules, according to industry officials and a congressional aide. The lawmakers are reacting to a demand by the White House that the provisions satisfy U.S. obligations under the World Trade Organization. President Barack Obama “wants to ensure that any legislation that passes is consistent with trade agreements and doesn’t signal a change in our overall stance on trade,” White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said at a news briefing today. The House Ways and ...

New Hampshire talks civil war against feds

The New Hampshire state legislature took an unbelievably bold step today by introducing a resolution to declare certain actions by the federal government to completely totally void and warning that certain future acts will be viewed as a "breach of peace" with the states themselves that risks "nullifying the Constitution." This act by New Hampshire is a clear warning to the federal government that they could face being stripped of their power by the States (presumably through civil war! The remarkable document outlines with perfect clarity, some basics long forgotten. For instance, it reminds Congress "That the Constitution of the United States, having delegated ...

Google Offers "Latitude" To Track People

Google is releasing free software Wednesday that enables people to keep track of each other using their cell phones. CNET got a sneak peek at it, and CNET-TV Senior Editor and The Early ShowNatali Del Conte explained how it works on the show Tuesday. She says "Latitude" uses GPS systems and what's called cell tower triangulation to do the job. The software seeks the closest three cell towers and, with GPS, combines the data to show where someone is. It is designed to work on any phone with Internet capabilities, except the iPhone. "Latitude" is being marketed as a tool that could help parents keep tabs on their children's locations, but it can be used for ...

WASHINGTON — Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination as secretary of health and human services on Tuesday after weathering four days of scrutiny over unpaid taxes, prompting President Obama to concede having “screwed up” in undermining his own ethical standards by pushing the appointment. “I’ve got to own up to my mistake, which is that ultimately it’s important for this administration to send a message that there aren’t two sets of rules,” Mr. Obama said in an interview with NBC News. “You know, one for prominent people and one for ordinary folks who have to pay their taxes.” Mr. Daschle, a closer confidant to Mr. Obama than any other cabinet ...

A Sudbury, Ontario truth activist was the victim of a warrantless police home search following the discovery of a photo of him brandishing a toy gun on the social networking website Facebook. Despite the fact that the photo was of the man holding an obvious cap gun, police demanded to enter Ryan Lever’s property in search of the item, which isn’t even illegal. “I had the police show up telling me i had a picture posted on facebook holding a gun! I informed them it was obviously not a real gun they did not care! They proceeded to search my house looking for this toy gun!,” complained Lever. He said the pictures had been up on Facebook for over 2 years, but they had ...

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - MySpace officials say about 90,000 sex offenders have been identified and removed from its huge online social networking Web site. North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper said Tuesday the new figure is nearly double what MySpace officials originally acknowledged last year when detailing who had used their site. Cooper and Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal have led the charge seeking efforts to make social networking Web sites safer. MySpace officials sent the numbers to Blumenthal's office Tuesday. Last year, the attorneys general received agreements from MySpace and rival online networking site Facebook to push toward making their sites safer ...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Tom Daschle has withdrawn his nomination to be Health and Human Services secretary. That's according to a joint White House statement from President Barack Obama and his former nominee. Obama said Tuesday he accepted the withdrawal "with sadness and regret." Daschle has been battling for his nomination since it was disclosed he failed to pay more than $120,000 in taxes. He said he's withdrawing because he's not a leader who has the full faith of Congress and will be a distraction. Poster Comment:bye bye tommy

MIAMI (WSVN) -- With the unemployment rate in South Florida rising, Miami Fire Rescue was inundated with hundreds of applications for only a few positions. Hector Mirabile, the director of employee relations at the City of Miami offered a harsh reality of the job application process. "There are 35 openings that we have," he said. "We will accept 750 qualified applications who will compete for those 35 positions." The City of Miami accepted the applications on Monday morning from hundreds of job seekers, some of whom had waited outside since Saturday to apply. By noon, there were still people in line with no guarantee to be hired. Fernando Figueroa is one of ...

The Reality Of FEMA Camps And The Martial Law Apparatus

There is no doubt that the government is preparing a nationwide system of detention facilities under the guise of emergency management that could be used to house large quantities of Americans during a time of civil strife. Many think that it is a conspiracy theory, but it is not. It is a fact that the federal government has many facilities right now that can be used to house large numbers of political dissidents if the need arises. During World War II, the U.S. government through an executive order by FDR forced many Japanese-Americans to move into internment camps. In 2006, George W. Bush signed legislation to preserve these camps. Why would he do this unless there was a chance that they ...

Israel hopes to colonize parts of Iraq as ‘Greater Israel'

Israeli expansionists, their intentions to take full control of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and permanently keep the Golan Heights of Syria and expand into southern Lebanon already well known, also have their eyes on parts of Iraq considered part of a biblical “Greater Israel.” Israel reportedly has plans to relocate thousands of Kurdish Jews from Israel, including expatriates from Kurdish Iran, to the Iraqi cities of Mosul and Nineveh under the guise of religious pilgrimages to ancient Jewish religious shrines. According to Kurdish sources, the Israelis are secretly working with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to carry out the integration of Kurdish and other Jews into ...

U.S. GDP Shrank 3.8% Last Quarter, Most Since 1982

Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. economy shrank the most since 1982 in the fourth quarter of last year as consumer spending recorded the worst slide in the postwar era, a trajectory that’s likely to continue in coming months. The 3.8 percent annual pace of contraction in the final three months of last year was less than forecast, with a buildup of unsold goods cushioning the blow. Without the jump in inventories, the contraction would have been 5.1 percent, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. “It looks like the economy carried a lot of negative momentum into the first quarter,” former Fed Governor Laurence Meyer said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. ...

Bleeding banks prompt talk of new big U.S. bailout

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Major U.S. banks are still hemorrhaging red ink, despite massive taxpayer aid, and President Barack Obama is under pressure to take a high-stakes political gamble -- asking for another bailout. Whether he would get one from a skeptical Congress is unclear, given the wide dissatisfaction with the first bailout, known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, a $700 billion fund to stabilize the banks and Wall Street. The political danger of backing another aid package was vivid on Thursday when the House of Representatives voted 270-155 against releasing a second allotment of $350 billion to the TARP. The money will be released, nonetheless, because the Senate ...

Rush Limbaugh has been challenged by MSNBC. The fellow they had on said that Rush and Sarah Palin aren't being straight forward with the American people when they challenge Obama on being a socialist. The argument goes like this. Rush Limbaugh has said that he doesn't want Obama to succeed because that would be socialism winning. That as a conservative he isn't for socialism. Rush has asked on his show for people to show him anywhere in the world that socialism has worked. The MSNBC guy says that in fact socialism is everywhere in governments throughout the world. He uses the example of Medicare being socialism, and says that it works. His challenge to Rush Limbaugh is to ...

NEW YORK -- Three news agencies refused to distribute White House-provided photos of President Barack Obama in the Oval Office on Wednesday, arguing that access should have been provided to news photographers. The Associated Press, Reuters and Agence France-Presse said the White House was breaking with long-standing tradition in not allowing news photographers to capture the president at work in the Oval Office on his first day. "We are not distributing what are, in effect, visual press releases," said Michael Oreskes, managing editor for U.S. news at the AP. The news agencies have used White House-provided images in the past for areas in the White House where media access is ...

Vice President Cheney will be in a wheelchair for tomorrow's inauguration ceremony, the White House said tonight, after he pulled a muscle in his back. Cheney was moving into his new house in McLean from the Naval Observatory when he hurt his back moving boxes, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said. The vice president's doctor found no significant damage from the injury, Perino said. Nevertheless, he advised Cheney to spend the next couple of days in a wheelchair. "The vice president is looking forward to being there for tomorrow's historic inaugural activities," Perino said.

Corruption: Clinton acted on concerns of husband's donors

WASHINGTON – Secretary of State nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton intervened at least six times in government issues directly affecting companies and others that later contributed to her husband's foundation, an Associated Press review of her official correspondence found. The overlap of names on former President Bill Clinton's foundation donor list and business interests whose issues she championed raise new questions about potential ethics conflicts between her official actions and her husband's fundraising. The AP obtained three of the senator's government letters under the Freedom of Information Act. During Clinton's confirmation hearing Tuesday, Sen. Richard ...

A federal judge has ordered the Santa Rosa County School District to stop promoting religion and prayer in the classroom and at school events. U.S. District Court Judge Casey Rodgers ruled Friday after school officials admitted allegations in a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU sued the district, Pace High School Principal Frank Lay and former Superintendent John Rogers on behalf of two unnamed Pace High students. Rodgers' order prohibits employees from: n Promoting prayer at school-sponsored events, including graduation. n Planning or financing religious baccalaureate services. n Promoting religious beliefs to students in class or during ...

LONDON, Jan 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. is seeking to hire a merchant ship to deliver hundreds of tonnes of arms to Israel from Greece later this month, tender documents seen by Reuters show. The U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) said the ship was to carry 325 standard 20-foot containers of what is listed as "ammunition" on two separate journeys from the Greek port of Astakos to the Israeli port of Ashdod in mid-to-late January. A "hazardous material" designation on the manifest mentions explosive substances and detonators, but no other details were given. "Shipping 3,000-odd tonnes of ammunition in one go is a lot," one broker said, on condition of ...

Texas death row inmate pulls out eye, eats it

HOUSTON -- A Texas death row inmate with a history of mental problems pulled out his only good eye and told authorities he ate it. Andre Thomas, 25, was arrested for the fatal stabbings of his estranged wife, their young son and her 13-month-old daughter in March 2004. Their hearts also had been ripped out. He was convicted and condemned for the infant's death. While in the Grayson County Jail in Sherman, Thomas plucked out his right eye before his trial later in 2004. A judge subsequently ruled he was competent to stand trial. A death-row officer at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice found Thomas in his cell with blood on his face and took him to the ...

Mystery Roar from Faraway Space Detected

ONG BEACH, Calif. -- Space is typically thought of as a very quiet place. But one team of astronomers has found a strange cosmic noise that booms six times louder than expected. The roar is from the distant cosmos. Nobody knows what causes it. Of course, sound waves can't travel in a vacuum (which is what most of space is), or at least they can't very efficiently. But radio waves can. Radio waves are not sound waves, but they are still electromagnetic waves, situated on the low-frequency end of the light spectrum. Many objects in the universe, including stars and quasars, emit radio waves. Even our home galaxy, the Milky Way, emits a static hiss (first detected in 1931 by ...
