Decimating the Constitution with Military Tribunals Post Date: 2006-09-28 13:25:02 by A K A Stone

Given all the glorification being bestowed on three U.S. senators for displaying principle in standing against President Bushs plan to amend the Geneva Convention to permit torture of detainees, followed by their quick compromise abandoning any semblance of principle, it is easy to lose sight of something much bigger: The military tribunals that the president and the Congress are set to approve will constitute the most radical, dangerous, and disgraceful transformation in the U.S. criminal-justice system since our nations inception. To prevent abuse of power, the U.S. Constitution divided power between three branches of government. The legislative branch would have ...

BOISE, Idaho - Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft could be called to testify in a lawsuit that claims a student was wrongly imprisoned in a computer terrorism case, a federal judge ruled Wednesday. ADVERTISEMENT U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge rejected Ashcroft's argument to toss out the lawsuit because he was entitled to absolute immunity since his position at the Department of Justice was prosecutorial. Abdullah al-Kidd, who played football for the University of Idaho, claimed government wrongfully arrested him in the case against a fellow student, Sami Omar Al-Hussayen, in 2003. They both worked for the Islamic Assembly of North America, a Michigan-based charitable ...

The California Public Employees Retirement System, the largest US public pension fund, is considering investing for the first time in Chinese companies, aiming both to capitalise on the countrys booming economy and to raise its exposure to emerging markets. Such a move by Calpers, which has not invested any of its $208bn (164bn) portfolio in Chinese companies because of poor corporate governance standards, could have a ripple effect on other US public pension funds and increase demand for Chinese shares. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A South Florida lawmaker wants the state to remove Citgo gas stations from Florida's Turnpike. State Representative Adam Hasner is raising the issue following last week's comments by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at the United Nations, who said President George W. Bush was "the devil." Citgo is owned by the national oil company of Venezuela. In a letter to the state Department of Transportation, Hasner asks whether the state can terminate the contracts of Citgo gas stations at toll plazas along the Turnpike. In his letter, the Delray Beach Republican said a clear message needs to be sent to Chavez that the state of Florida "will not support ...

Bill Clinton with Freerepublic helps Hillary Clinton become President on Fox news Post Date: 2006-09-25 16:14:11 by TLBSHOW

LET'S DO A THOUGHT experiment: Perhaps Bill Clinton, an experienced and sophisticated politician, knew what he was doing when he made big news by "losing his temper" in his interview with Chris Wallace. Perhaps Clinton's aides knew what they were doing when they publicized the interview by providing their own transcript to a left-wing website as soon as possible Friday evening, and then pre-spun reporters late Friday and Saturday. Maybe it was just damage control. Or maybe Clinton did what he wanted to do when he indignantly defended himself, blasted the Bush administration, and attacked Fox News. What could Clinton have been seeking to accomplish? Three things. 1. Helping ...

Mel Gibson has returned to the spotlight to promote his upcoming movie "Apocalypto," and to criticize the war in Iraq, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Almost two months after he railed against Jews when he was arrested for driving drunk in Malibu, the actor made a surprise appearance Friday at Fantastic Fest, an event in Austin, Texas, devoted to new science fiction, horror and fantasy films, the trade paper said in its Monday edition. He presented a work-in-progress screening of his Mayan adventure tale, and then took questions. About one-third of the full house gathered for the film gave him a standing ovation. The film is scheduled for a December 8 release via Disney. ...

America is at war, and the enemy are Muslims, Dr. James C. Dobson, chairman and founder of the powerful Focus on the Family organization, told this weekend's "2006 Values Voters Summit" in Washington. "We're in a war and it's time that we recognized it," Dobson said, emphasizing that he doesn't think all Muslims want to kill Americans. He said, however, there is a percentage - even if it's only 4 percent, or close to 50 million people - who do. According to the Washington Times, Sen. George Allen of Virginia, was among the Republican presidential hopefuls speaking to the conference. Allen said the 1,000 people attending they could "count on me" in the fight ...

"We responded with the dignity of Venezuelan revolutionaries ... with strength," Maduro told reporters at Venezuela's mission to the U.N. "It's a Nazi government, a racist government." If this is how U.S. authorities treat a foreign minister, he said, "what won't they do to Arab people for wearing a turban?" He said his passport and ticket were seized and eventually returned, but the incident prevented him from flying home Saturday. U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey said it was a "regrettable incident" for which "the U.S. government has apologized."
VeggieTales too Christian for NBC Network demands edits, creator says it fears kids hearing 'God loves you' Post Date: 2006-09-23 19:29:36 by A K A Stone

The wildly popular VeggieTales kids videos about vegetables who talk and sing and act out Bible stories are being edited for their run on NBC's Saturday morning educational program time, and the network says it's because of time limits. But the creator says that's not exactly the case, and viewers will have to decide for themselves whether the result is good or bad. NBC has been under pressure from several family groups and others because of a couple of recent decisions that appear to have a bias against Christianity. One issue has been the editing of the VeggieTales videos, Big Idea productions which now are in a regular slot on NBC, Telemundo and the i network as part of the new Qubo ...
Civil Emergencies Ordinance Post Date: 2006-09-22 23:44:23 by TLBSHOW

Greenleaf, Idaho -- All Americans have the right to bear arms. Some towns have even gone as far as to require each household to have a gun. Now a small Idaho town is contemplating a similar idea-- it's called the Civil Emergencies Ordinance. And although gun ownership is just one piece of this ordinance, it's the part that's getting the most attention. "We've blessed to be a fairly rural area of the state, so we don't have a lot of crime and I think we'd like to keep it that way," said Lee Belt, Greenleaf city clerk. Drive about 10 minutes west of Caldwell and you'll run into Greenleaf, Idaho, population 860. If city council member Steve Jett has his way, each head of household ...

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - President George W. Bush charged on Thursday that Democrats would raise taxes if put in control of the U.S. Congress, turning to a familiar campaign theme as he seeks to stave off Republican losses in November. "If they get control of the House of Representatives, they'll raise your taxes. It'll hurt our economy. And that's why we're not going to let them get control of the House of Representatives," Bush said.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Poor New Yorkers who make healthy choices - such as staying in school and regularly seeing the doctor - should be rewarded with cash to help break the cycle of poverty, Mayor Michael Bloomberg suggested Monday. The idea, which has seen success in countries including Brazil and Mexico, developed out of an anti-poverty commission's report released Monday. The commission did not specifically propose using rewards but did suggest the city find innovative ways to help its 1.5 million poor lift themselves out of poverty. The commission, headed by Time Warner's chief executive, Richard Parsons, and the president of the nonprofit group Harlem Children's Zone, Geoffrey Canada, said ...

The negotiations began in July after Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and Renault SA CEO Carlos Ghosn broached the possibility of an alliance among Renault, Nissan and GM, according to several people familiar with the talks, Automotive News reported. It is not clear who launched the talks. One person said GM CEO Rick Wagoner contacted Ford Motor the day after Ghosn disclosed his plan. A second person disputed that. In August, GM CFO Fritz Henderson discussed the proposed alliance with Ford CFO Don Leclair, said a person familiar with the talks. But ...
