Kinky Friedman says he favors legalizing marijuana to keep nonviolent users out of prison. If Texas elects him governor, he says, he'll try to get locked-up pot users released to make room for more violent criminals. "I think that's long overdue," Friedman told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday. "I think everybody knows what (U.S. Sen.) John McCain said is right: We've pretty well lost the war on drugs doing it the way we're doing it. Drugs are more available and cheaper than ever before. What we're doing is not working." Friedman, the often irreverent singer, entertainer and mystery writer, is running as an independent in a bid to unseat Republican Gov. ...

To: LisaMalia I saw the ad for this documentary yesterday and was stunned to say the least. I have read about the Nixon war with John Lennon, and saw a show about it on the history channel this year. I imagine (no pun intended) this one will really be a doozie. 2 posted on 09/15/2006 1:51:24 AM EDT by ladyinred

Reality is the leading cause of stress amongst those in touch with it. - Jane Wagner While Im now in my 23rd year in the financial arena, I have never seen such a discrepancy between what I perceive the future holds versus how the majority of Americans are living their lives and are seemingly unprepared for it. I dont consider myself a pessimist but a realist. I believe America as we knew it just a couple of decades ago, has ceased to existonly its politically incorrect to even suggest that. Cultural relativism and secularism is becoming the norm while the very fabric that held this country together for the first 200 years is being ripped apart. At ...

9/11: Five Years Later, Better or Worse? Ask Guy Gabaldon By Debbie Schlussel When Ronald Reagan ran for President against Jimmy Carter in 1980, one simple question was the focal point of his campaign: Are you better off today than you were four years ago? Five years after 9/11, Reagan's campaign question is a good template for the war on terror. On Monday, we should ask ourselves: Are we better off today than we were five years ago today? The answer is no. Guy Gabaldon: World War II Hero Would Be Vilified Now Those who hate us are in our midst, and lax immigration laws have made their entry easier. classic Democrat excuses for doing nothing in response to the Cole attack: Attorney General Janet Reno "thought retaliation might violate international law and was therefore against it." CIA Director George Tenet "wanted more definitive proof that bin Laden was behind the attack, although he personally thought he was." Secretary of State Madeleine Albright "was concerned about the reaction of world opinion to a retaliation against Muslims and the impact it would have in the final days of the Clinton Middle East peace process." (How did that turn out, by the way? Big success, I take it? Everybody over there all friendly with one another?) Secretary of ...

In the midterm election on November 7, the Democrats won't win either the House or the Senate. "I believe these elections will come down to two things: one, firm belief that in order to win the war on terror there must be a comprehensive strategy that recognizes this war is being fought on more than one front, and, two, the economy." ... Bush said the price of gasoline, which has been falling rapidly, is one of the "interesting indicators" that the press should watch carefully. "Just giving you a heads up,"

The maker of a controversial movie that portrays President Bush as an assassination victim admits he hid his true intentions from White House officials in order to film footage of the commander in chief on a visit to Chicago. Gabriel Range, the 32-year-old British director of "Death of a President," told the Los Angeles Times his crew received official White House press credentials by proving they were affiliated with Britain's Channel 4, which will air the film this fall. Range, who filmed the president's arrival at the airport and his speech to the Economic Club of Chicago, spent six months in the city, where he filmed anti-war rallies and staged other rallies himself without ...

In the thick of a hotly contested U.S. Senate race, Republican Tom Kean Jr. has decided to make a sharp break from George W. Bush, saying the president has made "horrendous mistakes" in Iraq, is "dead wrong" on the environment and also wrong to limit stem cell research. Kean issued a scathing critique of his party's standard-bearer during an hourlong interview with The Star-Ledger. Kean labeled the federal response to Hurricane Katrina a failure and rebuked Bush for allowing federal spending to balloon without issuing a single veto.

John Doe is 31 years old, received degrees in philosophy and psychology from the University of Mary Washington and is an aquatics coach in the Washington area. He does not want you to know his name or that when he was about 18 he was convicted of having sex with his 14-year-old sister. The sex started, police said, when she was in second grade. Now that Virginia's online sex offender registry has been expanded to include all sex offenders -- not just those considered violent -- people such as Doe are being told that they must register or face arrest. That means that their names, photos and professions will be posted on the Internet amid the rapists and child molesters already there. ...

`LOVE!' is all you need, if you're Big & Rich Friday, September 08, 2006 It was easy to label country-music duo Big & Rich a one-hit wonder after the ``Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy'' euphoria of 2004. The song and subsequent video seemingly broke every rule in Nashville, leaving fans and insiders thinking: ``Rap lyrics in country music? OK, that'll work once, but that's it!'' But then the darndest thing happened. Fans started scooping up copies of the ``Horse of a Different Color'' CD and rushing to buy tickets to learn about ``country music without prejudice'' (that's how founding members ``Big Kenny'' Alphin and John Rich refer to their music). Their second album, ``Comin' To ...

ABC's upcoming five-hour docudrama "The Path to 9/11" is quickly becoming a political cause célèbre. The network has in recent days made changes to the film, set to air Sunday and Monday, after leading political figures, many of them Democrats, complained about bias and alleged inaccuracies. Meanwhile, a left-wing organization has launched a letter-writing campaign urging the network to "correct" or dump the miniseries, while conservative blogs have launched a vigorous defense. ADVERTISEMENT "The Path to 9/11," whose large ensemble includes Harvey Keitel and Patricia Heaton, offers a panoramic sweep of the events leading up to the terrorist ...

A day after President Bush acknowledged for the first time that the CIA runs secret prisons overseas, he told an Atlanta audience that he would continue to use all tools available to combat al-Qaida and terrorists determined to attack the United States. "I will continue using every element of national power to pursue our enemies and prevent attacks on the United States of America," Bush said Thursday. The president has said that the CIA has used tough interrogation methods to force terrorist leaders to reveal plots to attack the United States and its allies. For the first time in 30 years, Bob Dylan tops The Billboard 200 with "Modern Times." Not only is it the legendary songwriter's first album to reach the throne since "Desire" in 1976, it's also his highest debuting album and his best sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. The Columbia set moved 192,000 copies in the United States in its first week. "Modern Times" is Dylan's third consecutive top 10 studio set, following 1997's "Time Out of Mind" and 2001's "Love & Theft." Aside from "Desire" and "Modern Times," only two other Dylan albums assumed the plateau on the chart: 1974's "Planet ...

Vt. Town Says No to Public Nudity Ban Sep 06 9:44 AM US/Eastern Mother Nature, not an ordinance, will draw the covers over public nudity in Brattleboro. The town's Select Board decided Tuesday to take no action on an anti- nudity ordinance that was introduced in response to a clothing- optional movement launched by local teenagers this summer. "Winter is coming. If spring comes and we still have a problem, we'll take another look at it," said Select Board Chairman Steve Steidle. Vermont has no state law against public nudity, though at least eight communities have banned it locally. Brattleboro, however, has long had a live-and-let-live culture. Its 12,000 residents have ...
Massive oil field found under Gulf Reserves south of New Orleans could rival North Slope, boosting U.S. supplies by 50% Post Date: 2006-09-06 00:24:13 by A K A Stone

Chevron and two oil exploration companies announced the discovery of a giant oil reserve in the Gulf of Mexico that could boost the nation's supplies by as much as 50 percent and provide compelling evidence oil is a plentiful deep-earth product made naturally on a continuous basis. Known as the Jack Field, the reserve some 270 miles southwest of New Orleans is estimated to hold as much as 15 billion barrels of oil. Authors Jerome R. Corsi and Craig R. Smith say the giant find validates the key thesis of their book, "Black Gold Stranglehold: The Myth of Scarcity and the Politics of Oil," that oil did not come from the remains of ancient plant and animal life but is ...

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush used terrorists' own words Tuesday to battle complacency among Americans about the threat of future attack, defending his national security record as the fall campaign season kicks into high gear. Bush said that despite the absence of a successor on U.S. soil to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the terrorist danger remains potent. "Bin laden and his terrorist's allies have made their intentions as clear as Lenin and Hitler before them," the president said before the Military Officers Association of America and diplomatic representatives other countries that have suffered terrorist attacks. "The question is 'Will we listen? Will we pay attention ...
