Feb. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Stocks rose, fuel and metals gained and Treasuries fell as investors speculated a European agreement to bail out Greece will help preserve the global economic recovery and inflation concern waned in China. The top Democrat and Republican on the Senate Finance Committee released a draft of the chamber's jobs bill Thursday, vowing to maintain the "bipartisan character" of their negotiations going forward. The $85 billion package -- which includes a payroll tax break for employers hiring new workers along with a blend of tax credits, infrastructure spending moves and measures to extend expiring legislation -- is the first in what Democratic leaders say will be a series of job-creation measures the Senate will address in 2010. The bill also represents a break from recent partisan history in the chamber, where the majority and minority have been loathe to collaborate on any ...

A Ritz-Carlton spokeswoman, Vivian Deuschl, said: "The whole demonisation of luxury meetings and companies pulling back on having their high-end meetings in luxury hotels this has had a tremendous impact on Las Vegas. "I can't think of another destination that has had to defend itself more against comments from politicians." The Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas resort, which has 350 rooms and is 17 miles from the Las Vegas Strip, is owned by an arm of Deutsche Bank and will stop day-to-day operations on May 2. A Deutsche Bank spokesman, Scott Helfman, said: "The unprecedented economic downturn has had a significant impact on the hotel's operations."

Gingrich: Shoe Bomber Was An American Citizen (He Wasn't), So It Was OK To Mirandize Him Post Date: 2010-02-10 11:08:53 by go65

In their quest to cast President Obama's handling of the Christmas bomber as weak and ineffectual, Republicans have had to overcome a stubborn fact: The Bush administration handled shoe bomber Richard Reid in similar fashion in 2001. So what do you do with stubborn facts? You change them. On the Daily Show last night, Newt Gingrich claimed the "shoe bomber," Richard Reid, is an American citizen. Reid is actually a British citizen. Gingrich was attacking the Obama administration for reading the Miranda rights to the Christmas Day attempted bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. Jon Stewart pointed out that the Bush administration did the same to Reid. But Gingrich defended ...

When a political poll was released in December, announcing to the world "44% of Americans would prefer George W. Bush to Barack Obama" I smiled and understood the reasoning. Two months later, we now have Americans in Minnesota (of all places) purchasing billboard space to profess their political desire for President Bush. I have missed President Bush for twelve months. It started with his flight to Crawford, Obama's decision to close down Gitmo (how's that working out), progressed with the well known Somali Pirates skirmish, Obama ignoring his Generals for months on Afghanistan and the failed terrorist attack on American soil in December. Not to mention, the fact ...

In a state that went blue in the presidential election a mystery billboard has emerged along I-35: I personally love this billboard! I wish I knew who the small business owners were because, I as a small business owner, I would buy from them! We need to see these go up all over America! President Bush, how about 2012?

In an appearance on ABC's The View, Meghan McCain also took issue with a number of recent statements from Sarah Palin, criticizing the former Alaska governor for defending Rush Limbaugh's use of the word "retard" and for suggesting that President Obama launch a war against Iran in order to win a second term. McCain described Former Republican congressman Tom Tancredo's call for a literacy test for voters as "innate racism." McCain obviously also has issues with Palin, but it was Tancredo's speech -- in which he thanked God that McCain's father lost the election -- that stuck in her craw: "It's innate racism, and I think it's why ...
The Tea Party Goes After Ron Paul Post Date: 2010-02-09 11:42:36 by Brian S

His son Rands campaign for Senate in Kentucky is going better than anyone could have expected every Kentuckian I met at the National Tea Party Convention backed him but Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) is drawing three primary opponents for his own re-election bid. Ironically, all three are from the Tea Party movement, which, as reporter Tom Benning points out, would be hard to imagine without the energy stirred up by Pauls 2008 presidential bid. Tea Party associations aside, many of the challengers criticisms echo concerns of Pauls past opponents: that he is too focused on his national ambitions; that his views are too extreme; that he doesnt support the ...
Obama is Lying About His Inherited Budget Deficit Post Date: 2010-02-09 09:20:16 by dont eat that

President Obama has introduced his budget for fiscal 2011 that includes $1.6 trillion in deficit spending. Obama continues to blame George W. Bush for the mess we are in because of the budget deficit he inherited. How do I defend against this argument? Budget Buster in Boulder Dear Buster: It is difficult to defend the Republicans during the Bush administration, as they virtually did nothing to rein in Congresss addiction to spending over his two terms. Unfortunately, President Bush did in fact leave President Obama a deficit of about $450 billion, but not the $1.3 trillion figure Obama bandies about. Not to make excuses, but Bushs deficit included two wars and the ...

"Access to Guns", Not Jihad to Blame for Ft. Hood, says noted Islamic scholar Post Date: 2010-02-09 04:49:45 by A K A Stone

Imam Zaid Shakir came to speak at my school, Claremont McKenna, on December 9th to respond to the tragedy of Ft. Hood. Rather than respond to the massacre of American servicemen, Shakir spent the evening indicting the United States saying we were born in genocide. The reason for the Ft. Hood Massacre, according to Shakir? Not jihad or Islamic fundamentalism, but the pervasiveness of violence in our society and because of Americans easy access to guns. Former Alaska governor and US vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin on Sunday sent a message to President Barack Obama that he can mend his failing popularity and ensure his chances of reelection in 2012 by standing firmly behind Israel and realizing that the time has arrived to resort to military options to thwart Iran's nuclear program. Speaking on Fox News, Palin stated, "Say [Obama] decided to declare war on Iran or decided to really come out and do whatever he could to support Israel - which I would like him to do - that changes the dynamics of what we can assume will happen between now and three years. Because I think if the election were today, Obama would not be ...

A U.S. soldier has been accused of 'waterboarding' his four-year-old daughter because she couldn't recite the alphabet. Joshua Tabor admitted to police that he used the CIA torture technique because he was so angry. As his daughter 'squirmed' to get away, Tabor said he submerged her face - upwards - three or four times until the water was lapping around her forehead and jawline. Tabor, 27, admitted to investigators that his daughter was terrified of water and he had deliberately chosen the punishment. The practice of waterboarding has been used by the CIA to break Al Qaeda suspects at Guantanamo Bay and at secret prisons. Detainees, including the mastermind of the ...

During todays conference call with USDA, I asked whether the agency would continue using ...
