FBI checks bomb report in Tacoma, finds pumpkin
Post Date: 2007-10-05 10:14:39 by A K A Stone

TACOMA — The FBI checked out a report of an atomic bomb in Tacoma and found it had turned into a pumpkin. The Port of Tacoma called the FBI after the deputy director received a phone message Sept. 21 from a port commission candidate, Bill Casper. He said he knew how to make an atomic bomb that could elude security devices. An FBI spokeswoman in Seattle, Robbie Burroughs, says four agents went to Casper's office Sept. 26 to question him. He says he spent an hour with the agents showing them a pumpkin and another squash similar in size to pieces of the Hiroshima bomb. Burroughs says the agents left satisfied it wasn't dangerous. Casper's top issue as a candidate is ...

CIA brings back old hand to head clandestine unit

WASHINGTON -- Three years after he quit the CIA in a high-profile clash with agency leaders, veteran spy Michael J. Sulick was brought back into the fold on Friday and put in charge of running the CIA's clandestine operations. In rehiring Sulick, CIA Director Michael V. Hayden is turning to a widely respected case officer, but one who spent the bulk of his overseas career in Cold War outposts. Sulick will take over the agency's main spying directorate at a time when it is faced with the challenges of absorbing hundreds of new hires made since the Sept. 11, 2001 , attacks while struggling to get better intelligence on the morphing terrorist threat and the insurgency in Iraq. ...

Fred Thompson worked for the Lockerbie Terrorists

A little over three years after Pan Am Flight 103 blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland, Fred D. Thompson provided advice to a colleague about one of his law firm’s new clients: The man representing the two Libyan intelligence officials charged in the terrorist bombing. The colleague, John Culver, a partner at the Washington firm of Arent Fox Kintner Plotkin & Kahn began advising the two suspects’ Libyan lawyer in February 1992. Mr. Thompson, according to a memorandum from that era written by his secretary, held “discussions with Culver re: Libya” that same month. At the time, Libya was facing international outrage for refusing to comply with a United Nations demand ...

White House scrubs site in attempt to make office 'exempt'
Post Date: 2007-09-04 23:27:22 by A K A Stone

The White House has scrubbed its Web site of evidence it has reversed its policies on allowing public access to information to which it is legally entitled. However, a source told RAW STORY that the scrub would have no legal implications. Sometime over the weekend, White House computer technicians removed from government Web sites any references to the Office of Administration or its previous compliance with Freedom of Information Act requests. Where visitors once just found information about how to file public records requests or view annual reports on the Office of Administration's FOIA compliance, the White House has appended the following admonition: "The Office of ...

Edwards backs mandatory preventive care

TIPTON, Iowa - Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards said on Sunday that his universal health care proposal would require that Americans go to the doctor for preventive care. "It requires that everybody be covered. It requires that everybody get preventive care," he told a crowd sitting in lawn chairs in front of the Cedar County Courthouse. "If you are going to be in the system, you can't choose not to go to the doctor for 20 years. You have to go in and be checked and make sure that you are OK." He noted, for example, that women would be required to have regular mammograms in an effort to find and treat "the first trace of problem." Edwards and ...

Pastor had instructional sex with daughters

A FUNDAMENTALIST church pastor had sex with two of his teenage daughters to educate them on how to be good wives, a South Australian court has heard. The 54-year-old man, who cannot be named, was today sentenced in the SA District Court to eight and a half years jail after pleading guilty to seven counts each of incest and unlawful sexual intercourse. The court heard that the man had sex with his daughters for nearly a decade from 1991 when they were aged 13 and 15 at the family property. The sex took place at various locations including in a shearer's shed, a paddock, on the back of a ute and, on one occasion, at the girls' grandparents house. The man told the court the sex ...

Armed robots -- similar to the ones now on patrol in Iraq -- are being marketed to domestic police forces, according to the machines' manufacturer and law enforcement officers. None of the gun-toting 'bots appear to have been deployed domestically, yet. Both cops and company officials say it's only a matter of time, however. "Other than some R&D with the shotgun mount, we haven't used it operationally," Massachusetts State Police Trooper Mike Rogowski tells DANGER ROOM. "But they're on the way. They're coming," Foster-Miller, maker of the armed SWORDS robot for military use, is also actively promoting a similar model to domestic, civilian ...

Patriot Hero Aaron Russo Passes Away

We were saddened to hear of the passing of activist, film maker, freedom fighter and all round maverick Aaron Russo today, who died today after a long battle with cancer at the age of 64. Aaron will be remembered fondly for all his achievements, not least of which the excellent America: From Freedom to Fascism, his final movie which exposed the fraudulent basis of the IRS and the Federal Reserve. Aaron was a real patriot who loved his country and risked his whole career to stand for the truth. He was an example to us all. Aaron Russo was the Samuel Adams of our day, a stalwart defender of liberty, his passing is greatly mourned but his fiery spirit lives on in all of his great work and ...

Ted Nugent Blames Hippies for Divorce, Abortion, Drugs and Crime

It was only a matter of time before Ted Nugent decided to rain on the Summer of Love’s anniversary parade. In an article from today’s Wall Street Journal titled “The Summer of Drugs,” the notoriously opinionated guitar god took some time off his busy hunting schedule to blame “stoned, dirty, stinky hippies” for “rising rates of divorce, high school drop-outs, drug use, abortion, sexual diseases and crime, not to mention the exponential expansion of government and taxes.” Highlights (including some choice words for Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin) after the jump: * On the Summer Of Love: “Honest and intelligent people will remember it for what it really was: the Summer of Drugs.” * On ...

DAYTON — Two people were shot to death and two people were arrested in a convenience store robbery Tuesday afternoon, Dayton police said. The owner of the Covault Market and Coin Laundry, 3705 Wayne Ave., was killed inside his store along with an employee, according to Maj. Michael Brown. The robbery and shooting happened about 1:30 p.m. Brown said two suspects were in custody. An Air National Guard airman apprehended a masked gunman who was fleeing from the scene, according to the man's mother. Robert Bragg, 24, who works as a military police officer at the Springfield Air National Guard base, was sitting on his porch about 1:30 p.m. when he noticed two suspicious young men ...

See who's editing Wikipedia? Diebold, CIA & Wal-Mart

On November 17th, 2005, an anonymous Wikipedia user deleted 15 paragraphs from an article on e-voting machine-vendor Diebold, excising an entire section critical of the company's machines. While anonymous, such changes typically leave behind digital fingerprints offering hints about the contributor, such as the location of the computer used to make the edits. In this case, the changes came from an IP address reserved for the corporate offices of Diebold itself. And it is far from an isolated case. A new data-mining service launched Monday traces millions of Wikipedia entries to their corporate sources, and for the first time puts comprehensive data behind longstanding suspicions of ...

Google's decision to discontinue video may alter DMCA enforcement

Since the death of the commercial part of Google Video will render thousands and thousands of purchases useless, the Library of Congress will have no choice but to consider the matter when they return to their triennial review of the DMCA. To date, the Library of Congress has granted exceptions to the anti-circumvention clause of the DMCA in instances where DRM has rendered something completely unusable, such as eBook DRM which can render eBooks useless for handicapped people. The right to bypass DRM on products that no longer work properly was considered but rejected last time around. Now, thanks to Google, we have a case study, a real-world example we can point to and say: "Hey, ...

ABC Reset Republican Debate Tally After Ron Paul Win
Post Date: 2007-08-05 14:24:16 by A K A Stone

ABC TV apparently reset its tally of who won the Republican debate it broadcast on August 5, Sunday morning. At 10 AM EST, Congressman Ron Paul (R-Tex) was winning the debate with over 1,000 votes. Mitt Romney was next with 106. After the debate at approximately 11:10 AM EST when the tally was rechecked, ABC showed Ron Paul had just 445 votes. Second was “Nobody Won. I’m Voting Democratic.” Of course, it could all be an innocent gliche, and perhaps ABC will explain these tallies or see fit to rectify them. But it has long been FMNN’s contention, along with others, that Ron Paul, an old fashioned Jeffersonian conservative, would serve as a metaphor and magnifying glass ...

FBI to Congress: Murder, Wrongful Imprisonment May Be Necessary to Preserve Drug Investigations

Last week , a federal judge excoriated the FBI for not only hiding exculpatory evidence that would have exonerated four innocent men who served more than thirty years in prison, but for rewarding those who did the hiding and covering up with bonuses and promotions. For this crime against American citizens, American taxpayers will now shell out more than $100 million. Thus far, none of the government agents actually responsible for this crime have been held accountable. Only rewarded. Well, we're just getting started. On July 19th, the House Judiciary Committee held hearings on the use and abuse of confidential drug informants. The testimony Assistant Director of the FBI Directorate of ...

Federal Agents Searching People at Indianapolis Bus Stops: Air Marshals Patting Civilians Down

Welcome to another creeping slide towards the big brother state. On August 2, 2007 over two dozen agents of the TSA setup two checkpoints at bus stops in Indianapolis Indiana and searched passengers who wanted to ride on city buses. Federal agents, including Air Marshals were present and patted people down, looked in bags, and performed "behavior" tests for the stated purpose of finding weapons and people who were a threat to public safety. Before you think I am joking, let me refer to both the Indianapolis Star report TSA checks IndyGo bus passengers as well as posted first person reports of what happened yesterday and why it effects us all. UPDATE: Thanks to DailyKos readers, ...

Bush Fulfills His Grandfather's Dream

It's remarkably common for a grandson to take up his grandfather's major project. This occurred to me when I read recently of Thor Heyerdahl's grandson taking up his mission to cross the Pacific on a raft. But what really struck me was the BBC story aired on July 23rd documenting President George W. Bush's grandfather's involvement in a 1933 plot to overthrow the U.S. government and install a fascist dictatorship. I knew the story, but had not considered the possibility that the grandson was trying to accomplish what his grandfather had failed to achieve. Prescott Sheldon Bush (1895 to 1972) attended Yale University and joined the secret society known as Skull and ...

Analysis: Gonzales Testimony Part of Broader Effort to Conceal Surveillance Program

Alberto Gonzales' testimony that there was "no serious disagreement" within the Bush Administration about the NSA warrantless surveillance program has left senators sputtering and fulminating about the attorney general's apparent prevarications. But a closer examination of Gonzales' testimony and other public statements from the Administration suggest that there may be a method to the madness. There's a lot of evidence to suggest that Gonzales's careful, repeated phrasing to the Senate that he will only discuss the program that "the president described" was deliberate, part of a concerted administration-wide strategy to conceal from the public the ...

DRIVING AS A RIGHT

Constitutional authority for the licensing and taxing of PRIVATE automobiles and drivers does NOT exist, and today is largely based on early legal word-games played by lawyers in the state legislatures acting in violation of the constitutional mandate of the "separation of powers." The "motor vehicle" statutes were designed and written to purposely confuse free civilian travel on the public roads with the taxable profession of "driving" -- the hauling of passengers or freight for profit. The motor vehicle statue code is a hodgepodge of self-contradicting, Machiavellian, and calculatedly incomprehensible rules and regulations. The administration of this network ...

Bush acknowledges administration official leaked Plame's name

WASHINGTON - President Bush on Thursday acknowledged publicly for the first time that someone in his administration likely leaked the name of a CIA operative, although he also said he hopes the controversy over his decision to spare prison for a former White House aide has "run its course." "And now we're going to move on," Bush said in a White House news conference. The president had initially said he would fire anyone in his administration found to have publicly disclosed the identity of Valerie Plame, the wife of former Ambassador Joseph Wilson and a CIA operative. Ten days ago, Bush commuted the 30-month sentence given to I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby by a ...

Military sees drop in black recruits

WASHINGTON - The number of blacks joining the military has plunged by more than one-third since the Afghanistan and Iraq wars began, as other job prospects soar and relatives of potential recruits increasingly discourage them from signing up. ADVERTISEMENT According to data obtained by The Associated Press, the decline covers all four military services for active duty recruits, and the drop is even more dramatic when National Guard and Reserve recruiting is included. The findings reflect the growing unpopularity of the wars, particularly among family members and other adults who exert influence over high school and college students considering the military as a place to serve their ...

US university students will not be able to work late at the campus, travel abroad, show interest in their colleagues' work, have friends outside the United States, engage in independent research, or make extra money without the prior consent of the authorities, according to a set of guidelines given to administrators by the FBI. Federal agents are visiting some of the New England's top universities, including MIT, Boston College, and the University of Massachusetts, to warn university heads about the dangers of foreign spies and terrorists stealing sensitive academic research. FBI is offering to brief faculty, students and staff on what it calls "espionage indicators" ...

Halliburton's Accounting Might Make You Wonder: Jonathan Weil

Investors have shrugged off almost all the bad news at Halliburton Co. the past few years -- accusations of overbilling the U.S. Army and bribing foreign officials, along with scrutiny over business dealings in Iran and non-compete bids on government work. Instead of tanking, the company's stock has soared. The same investors might take notice, though, if Halliburton's financial statements were in doubt, and a former company accounting executive says they are. Anthony Menendez, who was Halliburton's director of technical accounting research and training, has accused the world's second-largest oilfield-services company of using so- called bill-and-hold accounting and other ...

Tape Shows Hillary Clinton Committing Felony

A videotape shows New York Sen. Hillary Clinton committing felonies and should be admitted as new evidence in a California civil case, a forthcoming legal brief to be filed by Friday argues. The tape shows Clinton - currently the leading Democratic presidential contender - speaking in 2000 with Peter Paul, a Hollywood mogul, and comic book icon Stan Lee about a massive fundraising event for her 2000 Senate race. Paul spent about $2 million of his own money to produce the event. The legal contribution limit to a candidate then was $2,000. "The evidence is of that rare type that captures the very commission of a crime, namely, that of knowingly soliciting, coordinating and accepting ...
