Doctors are forecasting the closure of hospitals and clinics across America and a mass migration of physicians and their assistances to other careers should the Obama administration succeed in its attempt to overrule their rights of conscience. "Thousands of conscientious and compassionate physicians, nurses, hospitals and clinics currently serve poor women and those who live in medically underserved areas," said David Stevens, CEO of the Christian Medical Association today. "Many of these professionals and institutions are motivated and guided by longstanding Hippocratic ethics and biblical principles that preclude participation in abortion and other controversial ...

Ohio Supreme Court Upholds Right to Appeal Speeding Tickets

The Ohio Supreme Court rules that payment of a fine in a traffic case does not eliminate the right of a motorist to appeal. Ohio Supreme CourtThe Supreme Court of Ohio issued a ruling last month recognizing the right of motorists to appeal convictions for traffic offenses, even after a fine has been paid. A 5-2 majority of the court agreed that the imposition of driver's license demerit points can create enough of an ongoing hardship that appeals should be heard, despite the appearance of finality that comes with fine payment. In the case at hand, a young motorist, identified only as "SJK" was accused of reckless operation of a vehicle on August 17, 2004. Six months later, a ...

Man charged in bizarre kidnapping Police say he took Detroit woman to apartment in Toledo, put diaper, handcuffs on her, read from Bible. George Hunter and Oralandar Brand-Williams / The Detroit News DETROIT -- A ride turned into a harrowing, three-day ordeal for a 22-year-old Detroit woman who police say was held captive in a Toledo apartment by an acquaintance who handcuffed her, dressed her in a diaper and read Bible passages to her. When the woman broke free and banged on the door of a nearby apartment for help, the occupant, seeing the woman in a diaper with handcuffs on her wrists and feet, thought it was a joke, police said. Troy Brisport, 34, of Toledo picked up Shykea Boykin ...

Election Worker Facing Charges In Monroe County

A poll worker faces election fraud charges after county investigators said he tried to change people's votes on election day. Sean Stevens, 59, of Long Pond said he was just doing his job. Stevens faces felony fraud charges, after working the polls in Monroe County on election day. He addressed the Monroe County elections board a few weeks after election day before the charges were filed. "Had the machines been further apart, had people better knowledge of how to use the machines, there would have been less need, to me, to demonstrate," said Stevens. Stevens was a machine inspector for the 2008 presidential election. Court papers say Stevens reached over the back of voting ...

TradeComet.com, a small New York-based Internet search engine company, has filed suit against Google, accusing the king of Web search of violating antitrust laws. TradeComet, in a statement, said it filed a complaint this week in US District Court in New York asserting "Google violates antitrust laws by eliminating competition and choice." "Google's anticompetitive conduct eliminated TradeComet as a competitor," said the company, which was founded in September 2005. TradeComet said that in 2006, its subsidiary, SourceTool.com, "operated a thriving global business-to-business search engine enabling buyers of industrial products to easily connect with ...

ND House Passes Abortion Ban

North Dakota's House of Representatives has passed a bill effectively outlawing abortion. The House voted 51-41 this afternoon to declare that a fertilized egg has all the rights of any person. That means a fetus could not be legally aborted without the procedure being considered murder. Minot Republican Dan Ruby has sponsored other bills banning abortion in previous legislative sessions - all of which failed. He also sponsored today's bill and says it is compatable with Roe versus Wade - the Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion. (Rep. Dan Ruby, -R- Minot) "This is the exact language that's required by Roe vs. Wade. It stipulated that before a challenge can ...

GREENSPAN BACKS BACK NATIONALIZATION

The US government may have to nationalise some banks on a temporary basis to fix the financial system and restore the flow of credit, Alan Greenspan, the former Federal Reserve chairman, has told the Financial Times. In an interview, Mr Greenspan, who for decades was regarded as the high priest of laisser-faire capitalism, said nationalisation could be the least bad option left for policymakers. ”It may be necessary to temporarily nationalise some banks in order to facilitate a swift and orderly restructuring,” he said. “I understand that once in a hundred years this is what you do.” Mr Greenspan’s comments capped a frenetic day in which policymakers across the ...

Manhunt: Accused Financier Scammer Stanford Missing

Texas financier R. Allen Stanford is accused of cheating 50,000 customers out of $8 billion dollars but despite raids Tuesday of his financial empire in Houston, Memphis, and Tupelo, Miss., federal authorities say they do not know the current whereabouts of the CEO. The Securities Exchange Commission alleges Stanford ran a fraud promising investors impossible returns, much like Bernard Madoff's $50 billion alleged Ponzi scheme. Investigators Tuesday shut down and froze the assets of three of the companies Stanford controls and they say the case could grow to be as big as the Madoff scandal. Like Madoff's clients, Stanford's investors are in shock. "Initially we put our ...

Vilsack calls for stricter food labels

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is throwing out food labeling rules proposed by the Agriculture Department just before George W. Bush left office, saying it wants labels for fresh meat and other foods that would show more clearly where an animal or food came from, according to consumer groups who've been briefed on the issue. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told several consumer groups Tuesday in a conference call that he will ask the meat industry to voluntarily follow stricter guidelines for new package labels designed to specify a food's country of origin, according to three people who were on the call. If the industry does not comply, the administration will write ...

History of the Original 13th & 14th Amendments

The Original 13th Amendment On 2 March 1861, the Lincoln controlled 36th U. S. Congress (minus, of course, the seven seceded states of the Deep South) passed by a two-thirds majority a proposed amendment to the Constitution. Had it been ratified by the requisite number of states before the war intervened and signed by President Lincoln (who looked favourably on it as a way to lure the Southern states back into the Union), the proposed 13th Amendment would have prohibited the U. S. government from ever abolishing or interfering with slavery in any state. With slavery not being their reason for leaving the Union, the Southern States were not interested in returning and paying unfair tariffs ...

Anonymous Caller? New Service Says, Not Any More

A new service set for launch Tuesday allows cellphone users to unmask the Caller ID on blocked incoming calls, obtaining the phone number, and in some cases the name and address, of the no-longer-anonymous caller. The service, called TrapCall, is offered by New Jersey's TelTech systems, the company behind the controversial SpoofCard Caller ID spoofing service. The new service is likely to be even more controversial — and popular. "What’s really interesting is that they’ve totally taken the privacy out of Caller ID," says former hacker Kevin Mitnick, who alpha-tested the service. TrapCall's basic unmasking service is free, and includes the option of ...

Brooke Heike was a high school basketball star who was aggressively sought after by several colleges that wanted the league MVP from Washington Township, Michigan, to continue her record-breaking rebounding and shot-blocking skills on their campus. After leading her team to its first conference title in 18 years as a high school senior, the 6-foot-2 forward decided to attend Central Michigan University, which offered her a full ...

Federal obligations exceed world GDP

As the Obama administration pushes through Congress its $800 billion deficit-spending economic stimulus plan, the American public is largely unaware that the true deficit of the federal government already is measured in trillions of dollars, and in fact its $65.5 trillion in total obligations exceeds the gross domestic product of the world. The total U.S. obligations, including Social Security and Medicare benefits to be paid in the future, effectively have placed the U.S. government in bankruptcy, even before new continuing social welfare obligation embedded in the massive spending plan are taken into account. The real 2008 federal budget deficit was $5.1 trillion, not the $455 billion ...

Democrats Delay Bill Release to Conceal Details

Democratic staffers released the final version of the stimulus bill at about 11 pm last night after delaying the release for hours to put it into a format which people cannot “search” on their home computers. Instead of publishing the bill as a regular internet document -- which people can search by “key words” and otherwise, the Dems took hours to convert the final bill from the regular searchable format into “pdf” files, which can be read but not searched. Three of the four .pdf files had no text embedded, just images of the text, which did not permit text searches of the bill. That move to conceal the bill’s provisions had not been remedied this ...

A Boulder High student group is pushing to rename the school after a hot new historic figure: Barack Obama. "We initiate this campaign in order to honor the momentous achievement of his election as an African-American, inspire the community with his ideals of unity and hope, and reflect the progressive spirit that is shared by both Barack Obama and our school environment," the Student Worker Club said in a press release today. The group's president, Ben Raderstorf, stressed in the statement that it scheduled a campus press conference to pitch the Obama High plan on Thursday, "the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth to commemorate both the role he had in ...

About half-way through President Obama's press conference Monday night, he had an unscripted question of his own. "All, Chuck Todd," the President said, referring to NBC's White House correspondent. "Where's Chuck?" He had the same strange question about Fox News's Major Garrett: "Where's Major?" The problem wasn't the lighting in the East Room. The President was running down a list of reporters preselected to ask questions. The White House had decided in advance who would be allowed to question the President and who was left out. Presidents are free to conduct press conferences however they like, but the decision to preselect ...

Intel Races Ahead to Beat Recession and Rivals

The economic slowdown is hurting everyone, but if you are a chip company with deep pockets, the recession can be your friend. Intel announced Tuesday that it plans to accelerate its production of 32-nanometer processors and cancel some of its 45-nm integrated graphic chips in a bid to increase its lead over rival AMD. At the same time, Intel is cutting prices, betting the move will coax reluctant consumers to open their wallets. The two moves are a one-two punch that AMD, whose annual revenues are one-sixth of Intel's, will have a hard time matching. "It's a form of stimulus package for the worldwide demand for processors," says Shane Rau, an analyst with research firm ...

Canadian researchers say they can glean simple preferences from a person's brain by shining near-infrared light into the noggin. The study, reported in the Journal of Neural Engineering, demonstrated the ability to decode a person's preference for one of two drinks with 80 percent accuracy by measuring the intensity of near-infrared light absorbed in brain tissue, the scientists said in a statement today. "This is the first system that decodes preference naturally from spontaneous thoughts," says Sheena Luu, a University of Toronto doctoral student in biomedical engineering who led the work under the supervision of Tom Chau, a specialist in pediatric rehab engineering at ...

What if crimes by pen were treated like crimes by gun?

I stumbled across an interesting article in the Cleveland Plain dealer (originally appearing in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram yesterday entititled White-collar crime: Robbery by pen should be treated like one by gun about the Bernard Madoff $50 billion scam. Author Randy Johnston posed an interesting question: The largest robbery in this country ever accomplished with a gun netted a measly $4.46 million from Seafirst Bank in Lakewood, Wash. That is about the amount that Madoff tried to mail to relatives from his townhouse while he was out on bail. Everyone who helped the men rob with a gun was prosecuted or threatened into cooperating. Why is robbing with a pen any different? He's ...

Ruin Your Health With the Obama Stimulus Plan

Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Republican Senators are questioning whether President Barack Obama’s stimulus bill contains the right mix of tax breaks and cash infusions to jump-start the economy. Tragically, no one from either party is objecting to the health provisions slipped in without discussion. These provisions reflect the handiwork of Tom Daschle, until recently the nominee to head the Health and Human Services Department. Senators should read these provisions and vote against them because they are dangerous to your health. (Page numbers refer to H.R. 1 EH, pdf version). The bill’s health rules will affect “every individual in the United States” (445, 454, 479). Your ...

Robots will be armies of the future in a case of science fact catching up to fiction, a researcher told an elite TED gathering on Wednesday. Peter Singer, who has authored books on the military, warned that while using robots for battle saves lives of military personnel, the move has the potential to exacerbate warfare by having heartless machines do the dirty work. "We are at a point of revolution in war, like the invention of the atomic bomb," Singer said. "What does it mean to go to war with US soldiers whose hardware is made in China and ...
