Obama: Bush was right

This weekend, Americans were treated to something new: Barack Obama defending his war policies by suggesting they merely continue his predecessor’s practices. The defense is illuminating, not least for its implicit recognition that George W. Bush has more credibility on fighting terrorists than does the sitting president. Mr. Obama’s explanation came in an interview with Katie Couric just before the Super Bowl. Ms. Couric asked about trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York. After listing some of the difficulties, the president offered a startling defense for civilian trials: Barack Obama defending his war policies by suggesting they merely continue his predecessor’s ...

Bill Maher: Palin’s Job at Fox Equivalent to Talking to Her Down Syndrome Baby http://Newsbusters.org ^ | 2-17-10 | Rusty Weiss How does one prepare for an upcoming appearance by Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame? If you're Bill Maher, you follow up the Family Guy/Sarah Palin/Down Syndrome attack by doing an 'exclusive rant' for the Huffington Post which includes - you guessed it - a joke about Sarah Palin's son, Trig. Maher appeals to his lower-intellect audience by stating: "...while we were off, Sarah Palin agreed to do commentary at Fox News. Which is actually very similar to her day job - talking to a baby with Down Syndrome."

South Carolina Lawmaker Seeks to Ban Federal Currency

South Carolina Rep. Mike Pitts has introduced legislation that would mandate that gold and silver coins replace federal currency as legal tender in his state. As the Palmetto Scoop first reported, Pitts, a Republican, introduced legislation this month banning "the unconstitutional substitution of Federal Reserve Notes for silver and gold coin" in South Carolina. In an interview, Pitts told Hotsheet that he believes that "if the federal government continues to spend money at the rate it's spending money, and if it continues to print money at the rate it's printing money, our economic system is going to collapse." "The Germans felt their system ...

Warmest January on record for the lower atmosphere

Earth's lower atmosphere recorded its warmest January on record last month, according to data from both the University of Alabama, Hunstville (UAH) and Remote Sensing Systems (Figure 1). The satellite measurements used to take the global temperature of the lower atmosphere began in December 1978, using the Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) on polar-orbiting satellites. The January 2010 temperature anomaly was an impressive 0.72°C above the 1979 - 1998 average, easily beating the previous record of 0.59°C set in January 2007. Last month's anomaly was the 3rd warmest anomaly for any month, falling just 0.04°C cooler than the record warmest anomalies of 0.76°C from February ...

The Coming Crash of 2011 (The Obama Depression)

Americans no longer remember the concept of the "business cycle." For centuries, market economies have periodically turned down, and then turned back up. The recovery from such downturns is natural for a market economy. Every morning, at least some of the unemployed get up and look for work. Businessmen wake up and spend the day trying to restore their businesses to prosperity. As a result, market economies naturally come back to recovery. This is why the average recession in the U.S. since World War II has been only 10 months, with the longest, until now, being 16 months. Bad economic policies can throw economies into downturns, and delay recoveries. Keynesian economics and ...

AMY BISHOP LOVES OBAMA

ON 02-17-10AD…it has come to my attention…Amy Bishop was KNOWN on the University of Alabama campus as an OBAMA LOVER. Moreover, years ago…when she blew her brother away with a shotgun blast…she had also threatened others with that shotgun UNTIL it was removed from her possession by POLICE. BECAUSE she was a rabid outspoken socialist calling for enslavement of America…the POLICE did not pursue prosecution for the slaying of her younger brother or the aggravated assault on the others she threatened that fateful day. WHEN asked WHY they did not prosecute her for this slaying, the PROSECUTOR declared such a socialist/eco-fascist advocate for enslavement must be helped ...

Yes, they ARE missing Dubya! Shopping web site reports spike in sales of Bush items

Apparently someone really DOES miss Dubya. Items featuring a smiling former President George Bush and the question, "Miss Me Yet?" are doing a brisk business as sales of pro-President Obama items lag, reports the Web shopping site CafePress. Demand for the items spiked after a billboard featuring the ex-commander in chief appeared alongside a rural Minnesota highway last week, stirring up buzz. CafePress spokeswoman Jenna Martin said sales of Bush-related products virtually disappeared after Obama replaced him. But last week, she said, 10 of the firm's top-selling 100 designs were "Miss Me Yet?" items, moving to the tune of up to 500 orders a day. "There ...

The 2009 budget deficit—How did we get [there]?
Post Date: 2010-02-17 13:44:41 by war

In March 2009, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected a baseline deficit of $1.67 trillion, or 11.9% of gross domestic product (GDP) for fiscal year 2009. This was up from a deficit of $459 billion in fiscal year 2008, or 3.2% of GDP, and a reversal from surpluses a decade ago. These growing federal deficits are the result of four primary factors: the 2001 and 2003 tax changes; the external effects of the current recession; increased Bush-era spending, including spending on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; and the various short-term responses to the recession, including the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and financial market bailouts. The recession itself is the ...

U.S. Stocks Advance on Improving Earnings, Economic Data

Feb. 17 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks advanced, a day after the biggest rally since November for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, as better-than-estimated earnings, industrial production and housing data bolstered confidence in the economy. Deere & Co., the largest maker of farm equipment, surged 5.2 percent after profit was boosted by lower raw-material costs. Whole Foods Market Inc., the biggest U.S. natural-goods grocer, jumped 11 percent after raising its earnings forecast. Equities pared gains as the dollar rallied, dragging down commodities, after a ratings downgrade of securities issued by Greek banks spurred concern credit losses will continue to weigh on financial ...

In Arkansas, Former Alaska Governor Heaps Praise on Movement, But Says U.S. Has A Two-Party System (CBS) In front of a crowd of Republican Party activists and the tea-party movement’s rank and file here on Tuesday night, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin seemed to put a damper on speculation that she might consider running for president in 2012 as a third-party candidate. Asked what her advice would be to conservatives as the November elections approach, Palin first lavished praise on the Tea Party movement, calling it "a grand movement" and adding, "I love it because it’s all about the people." But she quickly pivoted to the broader question of whether ...

How the mighty have fallen! Only seven or eight months ago, President Obama and congressional Democrats were on their way to remaking America along liberal lines and positioning themselves for decades of political dominance. Their lopsided majorities in the House and Senate, plus the White House, gave them unassailable command of Washington. Today, they still have those majorities and the presidency, but they’re no longer in command. Their hopes of enacting the most ambitious agenda of liberal legislation since the days of FDR and the Depression are over. Now they’re reduced to stunts, tricks, and gambits usually associated with embattled presidents and minority parties. ...

Housing Starts in U.S. Increased 2.8% in January, Permits Fell

Feb. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Housing starts in the U.S. rose in January to a higher level than anticipated, a sign that government support is helping to stabilize the real estate market. Work began on 591,000 houses at an annual rate last month, up 2.8 percent from December, figures from the Commerce Department showed today in Washington. Permits, a sign of future construction, fell less than anticipated after rising in December to the highest level since October 2008. The extension and expansion of a homebuyer tax credit may boost demand in the coming months. At the same time, builders will have to contend with mounting foreclosures and an unemployment rate that’s projected to end the ...

WASHINGTON – WND Editor and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Farah today publicly called on Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham for a retraction of a statement in the magazine falsely claiming Farah is a proponent of a "conspiracy theory" that Barack Obama was not born in the United States. Farah is issuing the retraction demand, a legal requirement before a defamation lawsuit can be filed, both by letter and in his daily column today in WND.

Charles Franklin | December 6, 2009 Topics: Approval Ratings , Barack Obama , midterm , Ronald Reagan I've been struck for some time by the similarity of circumstance between Presidents Reagan and Obama. Both replaced deeply unpopular predecessors. Both enjoyed significant gains for their party in both houses of Congress. Both faced "worst since the depression" economic circumstances. And each in his own very different ways attempted to reshape government in the early months in office. With a bit more than 10 months of approval data on Obama, we can now make a more meaningful comparison than was possible at the first 100 days look. The similarity of approval ...

Obama Touts Nuclear Loan Guarantee As Just A Start

(02-16) 12:17 PST LANHAM, Md. (AP) -- Promising "this is only the beginning," President Barack Obama announced more than $8 billion in federal loan guarantees Tuesday for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the United States in nearly three decades. Obama cast his move as both economically essential and politically attractive as he sought to put more charge into his broad energy agenda. Obama called for comprehensive energy legislation that assigns a cost to the carbon pollution of fossil fuels, giving utility companies more incentive to turn to cleaner nuclear fuel. "On an issue that affects our economy, our security, and the future of our planet, we ...

Lake Erie Frozen over; First Time in 14 YearsUpdated: Tuesday, February 16, 2010 1:08 PM Following a cold snap in the Northeast, Lake Erie's surface is virtually frozen over for the first time in about 14 years. The ice ranges in thickness between paper thin along the northern shore and several inches along the southern shore, where many people are ice skating. GoErie.com reports that the lake hasn't completely frozen since the winter of 1995-1996. Although the ice cover is considered complete, prevailing winds have created some cracks in the ice. There are also reportedly ice chunks floating off the coast of Dunkirk, N.Y., which is one of the deepest parts of the lake and ...

IPCC errors: facts and spin

Currently, a few errors –and supposed errors– in the last IPCC report (“AR483;) are making the media rounds – together with a lot of distortion and professional spin by parties interested in discrediting climate science. Time for us to sort the wheat from the chaff: which of these putative errors are real, and which not? And what does it all mean, for the IPCC in particular, and for climate science more broadly? Let’s start with a few basic facts about the IPCC. The IPCC is not, as many people seem to think, a large organization. In fact, it has only 10 full-time staff in its secretariat at the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva, plus a few staff in four ...

Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Stocks rose around the world as improved earnings at Barclays Plc and faster-than-estimated growth in New York manufacturing spurred optimism the global economic recovery will be sustained. Oil and metal prices advanced as the dollar weakened. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index climbed 0.8 percent at 10:10 a.m. in New York and the MSCI World Index increased 0.8 percent. Barclays soared as much as 9.7 percent, the most since April. Copper rose to a three-week high and nickel advanced to the highest price since August, while oil rallied 3 percent to above $76 a barrel. Treasury 10-year notes fell, sending their yield up three basis points to 3.72 percent. ...

‘Oddball’ portrait of Amy Bishop emerges Suspect’s family, pals offer clues By Laurel J. Sweet, Jessica Van Sack, Jessica Fargen and Ira Kantor Monday, February 15, 2010 - Updated 23h ago As authorities searched for clues into what could have sent a University of Alabama neurobiology professor on an alleged killing spree, friends and family yesterday described Braintree native Amy Bishop as an awkward introvert on the brink of losing her teaching job. Bishop’s husband, James Anderson, told the Herald his wife had been fighting the university for over a year about a tenure denial, and several months ago received a final decision. The number of available job openings fell by nearly one-quarter last year, as finding a job became much tougher. Labor Department data released Tuesday estimates there were 2.5 million jobs available at the end of December, down from 3.2 million one year before. At the same time, unemployment soared by more than one-third, leaving more laid-off workers competing for fewer jobs. According to Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey, there were 6.1 unemployed workers for every 1 available position in December. That's a sharp jump from the previous December, at which time there were 3.4 workers per opening and from December 2007 with 1.7 jobless workers per ...

Fiery Ariz. Conservative Challenges John McCain

PHOENIX, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Fiery conservative Republican J.D. Hayworth launched a bid on Monday to run for the U.S. Senate in Arizona, unleashing the most serious challenge yet to incumbent John McCain and highlighting deep divisions in the party, analysts said. McCain, 73, a war hero who ran against Barack Obama for president in 2008, has a long record of working with Democrats who control an increasingly partisan Congress, alienating conservatives who see him as a maverick not to be trusted. "What I am hearing from people is that they want a consistent conservative," said Hayworth, 51, a talk radio show host and former U.S. congressman who is appealing to the party's ...

Some people call them “wiggers” but I just call them “idiots”. I used to wonder where they learned to be so racially condescending - presuming that dressing and “talking black” was a cool thing to do. But now I suspect that many of them have taken a course under Maurice Martinez, an education professor at UNC-Wilmington. The class “Teacher, School, and Society” (EDN 200) is required of all education majors. When students take Maurice Martinez for the class they get a special treat. Maurice teaches them “Black English.” In 2003, he even copyrighted course materials to make white future teachers fluent in “Black English.” To think ...
