43;A classmate of the man accused of shooting Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords this morning describes him as "left wing" and a "pot head" in a series of posts on Twitter this afternoon. Caitie Parker did not immediately respond to our request for an interview, but her "tweets" in the hours after the shooting paint a picture of Jared Loughner as a substance-abusing loner who had met Giffords before the shooting. She says, Loughner described the congresswoman as "stupid and unintelligent." We've confirmed that Parker and Loughner went to school together at Mountain View High School in Tucson and that both attended Pima Community College, so her ...

Solar plane makes record flight Post Date: 2008-08-24 07:43:27 by A K A Stone

A UK-built solar-powered plane has set an unofficial world endurance record for a flight by an unmanned aircraft. The Zephyr-6, as it is known, stayed aloft for more than three days, running through the night on batteries it had recharged in sunlight. The flight was a demonstration for the US military, which is looking for new types of technology to support its troops on the ground. Craft like Zephyr might make ideal platforms for reconnaissance. They could also be used to relay battlefield communications. Chris Kelleher, from UK defence and research firm QinetiQ, said Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) offer advantages over traditional aircraft and even satellites. "The principal ...

America is addicted to foreign oil. It's an addiction that threatens our economy, our environment and our national security. It touches every part of our daily lives and ties our hands as a nation and a people. The addiction has worsened for decades and now it's reached a point of crisis. In 1970, we imported 24% of our oil. Today it's nearly 70% and growing. As imports grow and world prices rise, the amount of money we send to foreign nations every year is soaring. At current oil prices, we will send $700 billion dollars out of the country this year alone that's four times the annual cost of the Iraq war. Loading... Projected over the next 10 years the cost will ...

Inventors: Solar Dish Could Revolutionize Energy Production LiveScience Staff LiveScience.comThu Jun 19, 3:05 PM ET A new type of solar energy collector concentrates the sun into a beam that could melt steel. Researchers say the device could revolutionize global energy production. The prototype is a 12-foot-wide mirrored dish was made from a lightweight frame of thin, inexpensive aluminum tubing and strips of mirror. It concentrates sunlight by a factor of 1,000 to produce steam. "This is actually the most efficient solar collector in existence," said Doug Wood, an inventor based in Washington state who patented key parts of the dish's design - the rights to which he has ...

The Power Crisis Mythology, the 40% Efficient Solar Cell and the Cost of the War in Iraq Post Date: 2007-06-05 23:48:21 by A K A Stone

Spectrolab, Inc., a subsidiary of Boeing, has developed a solar cell technology that has a conversion efficiency of 40.7%. They accomplished this with a grant from the U.S. Department of Energys National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The annual budget of the U.S. Department of Energys National Renewable Energy Laboratory: $210 million The cost of Americas war in Iraq per day: $300 million The U.S. spends more on the war in Iraq in one day (about $300 million) than it does on the ANNUAL BUDGET for the primary government laboratory that is tasked with renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. As absurd as that is, a recipient of a grant from this lab ...
How Stinky Gas Can Save the Earth (Cow Farts Post Date: 2006-12-12 13:43:11 by A K A Stone

It elicits giggles and grimaces when it emanates from cows' rear ends, but methane represents a serious threat -- it's a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Taking the "dross into gold" dictum to a whole new level, Velocys of Plain City, Ohio, is capturing the environmental pollutant and turning it into liquid fuel for heating or transportation. Though some blame methane's prevalence on barnyard inhabitants, most of it is a byproduct of human activities such as mining and trash burial. It's prevalent in underground caves where coal is found, and anaerobic conditions inside landfills foster decomposition that generates the gas. Much of it is ...
Coal: The Other Alt Fuel Post Date: 2006-11-12 18:15:44 by A K A Stone

Can coal a green fuel make? Silverado Green Fuels of Fairbanks, Alaska wants to process powdered coal that has less energy density and convert into fuel that could be used to power electric plants or converted into synthetic diesel for transportation, according to UPI. This "low rank" coal has less energy density than oil, and converting it to a liquid fuel produces a lot of CO2. But on the bright side it is much cheaper than oil and is widely available in North America . If carbon sequestration is feasible and the greenhouse gas emissions are no worse than petroleum, then this may be worth investigating. Silverado Green Fuels is one of several companies pursuing coal as a ...

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- Iraq`s oil minister stunned experts this week when he said production had reached 2.86 million barrels per day -- higher than pre-war levels and above what was known as Iraq`s capacity of about 2.5 million barrels per day. Oil Minister Hussein al-Shahristani said production in the south -- home of Iraq`s largest known reserves -- and the north, which has been hit with violence, have improved, the Middle East North Africa Financial Network reported Wednesday, citing the Arabic Al-Sabah newspaper.

History Of 'New Energy' Invention Suppression Cases By Gary Vesperman garyvesperman@yahoo.com 6-19-6 This is the third version of my compilation of specific energy suppression cases. This time I decided to get serious. I thoroughly reviewed my own files and a few web sites pertaining to energy suppression. Deleted were some cases that didn't appear to be authentic suppression. I also incorporated some thoughtful comments that had been emailed to me this last week. About three days ago, I received an amazingly timely phone call from Byron Wine in Virginia. For more than three decades he has been collecting energy information which he posts on his site http://byronwine.com. I included ...

Going solar As states look to the sun for power, could a new energy age be dawning? Post Date: 2006-05-17 20:49:48 by A K A Stone

On the top floor of Media Elementary School, Pete Alyanakian opens a window and climbs onto the roof. There, amid a few stray tennis balls, the sun glints off an array of solar panels the size of a billboard. A few roofs over, more panels have sprouted next to the historic armory and atop the local library. Installed in the dimness of last winter, the panels ticked along for a while. But now, with the sun blasting, the solar capital of Pennsylvania - as Department of Environmental Protection secretary Kathleen McGinty has dubbed Media - is cranking. The borough of 6,000 has become an environmental showcase while lopping thousands from its electrical bill. Elsewhere, too, solar power may ...
Hydrogen Can Save America Post Date: 2006-04-30 18:27:00 by A K A Stone

The cost of oil dependence has never been so clear. What had long been largely an environmental issue has suddenly become a deadly serious strategic concern. Oil is an indulgence we can no longer afford, not just because it will run out or turn the planet into a sauna, but because it inexorably leads to global conflict. Enough. What we need is a massive, Apollo-scale effort to unlock the potential of hydrogen, a virtually unlimited source of power. The technology is at a tipping point. Terrorism provides political urgency. Consumers are ready for an alternative. From Detroit to Dallas, even the oil establishment is primed for change. We put a man on the moon in a decade; we can achieve ...
