Have Americans Purposely Been Made Ignorant of Our Nations History and How Our Government Works? April 19, 2012 by Gary DeMar Pawn Stars is one of the History Channels most watched shows. Each 30-minute segment takes you behind the scenes of what happens at the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop located in Las Vegas, Nevada. Its family-owned business run by three generations of the Harrison family: Rick, his son Big Hoss, and Ricks dad, affectionately known as the Old Man. People bring in items to sell. The most interesting items, naturally, make it on the show. For me, the objects that get my attention are historical in nature from campaign ...

The New Animal House By Perry L. Glanzer on 4.12.12 @ 6:04AM The communities university administrators now fear. National Lampoon's Animal House, a well-known 1978 movie celebrating college hedonism appears quite ancient these days. For instance, the idea of a Dean of Students attempting to control the exploits of the "animals" when it comes to sexual activity remains a historical artifact now found only on certain religious campuses. Today, rampant sexual activity makes no difference to college administrators as long as it does not create some sort of public relations or legal challenge for the university. Ironically, administrators are now concerned about a whole new ...

A Bland Society Is a Sensitive Society By Frank Schell on 4.5.12 @ 6:07AM The latest educationist mania? Erasing words from history. Amid all the tumult -- Republican challengers goring each other while smiling, furtive Iranians spinning centrifuges in hardened bunkers deep underground, and President Obama admonishing the Supreme Court -- it is very easy to miss an event of monumental importance intended to enhance our nation's sense of values and promote a vision of a sensitive society. Perhaps unnoticed and lost in the ebb and flow of events, the New York City Department of Education recently indicated it would like to ban from school tests over fifty words that it finds ...
Bell's Critical Race Theory Promoted in Public Schools Post Date: 2012-03-24 10:44:38 by CZ82

The Vetting: Bell's Critical Race Theory Promoted in Public Schools by Kyle Olson A radical organization known as the Pacific Educational Group (PEG) is actively promoting Derrick Bells Critical Race Theory in public elementary and high schools nationwide, with an intense focus on what PEG calls Systemic Racism. With the approval of the Obama administration, and under the guise of closing achievement gaps between black and white students, PEG is promoting teaching methods that discourage black and brown students from conforming to an inherently white -- and therefore racist -- curriculum. PEG also encourages teachers to conform to the ...

Public School Principal Declares Public Schools Helping to Destroy Americas Foundation March 19, 2012 by Giacomo Conservatives and Christians have been saying for years that Americas public school system has been destroying our children and thus destroying Americas foundation. Most educators deny the charge and say they are doing their best to educate and prepare todays youth to be tomorrows leaders. However, one brave public school principal has finally seen the light and has come public with his accusations against the public school system and how it is negatively impacting the country. Jeffery Wick, a principal in Bowling Green, Virginia has just ...
The Big Hoax Post Date: 2012-03-13 18:40:39 by CZ82

The Big Hoax Thomas Sowell Mar 13, 2012 There have been many frauds of historic proportions -- for example, the financial pyramid scheme for which Charles Ponzi was sent to prison in the 1920s, and for which Franklin D. Roosevelt was praised in the 1930s, when he called it Social Security. In our own times, Bernie Madoff's hoax has made headlines. But the biggest hoax of the past two generations is still going strong -- namely, the hoax that statistical differences in outcomes for different groups are due to the way other people treat those groups. The latest example of this hoax is the joint crusade of the Department of Education and the Department of Justice against schools that ...

Admittedly, it sounds like the most foolhardy of criminal capers, and one of the cheekiest, too. Outside the police station in the small Victorian mill town of Todmorden, West Yorkshire, there are three large raised flower beds. If youd visited a few months ago, youd have found them overflowing with curly kale, carrot plants, lettuces, spring onions all manner of vegetables and salad leaves. Today the beds are bare. Why? Because people have been wandering up to the police station forecourt in broad daylight and digging up the vegetables. And what are the cops doing about this brazen theft from right under their noses? Nothing. snip I watch em on camera as ...

Campus President Rebukes Limbaugh-Supporting Professor U. of Rochester intimidates a professor and allows students to disrupt his class. Robert Shibley By now, most are familiar with the national tempest over conservative radio host Rush Limbaughs comments about Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke, and her testimony to Congress about whether Georgetown and other Catholic universities should have to cover birth control through their insurance policies. Predictably, the controversy has spilled over to a university campus. But the campus is the University of Rochester, and the issue is not contraception, but campus policing of speech. UR economics professor Steven Landsburg ...

Why Vulgarity Matters By William Tucker on 3.9.12 @ 6:08AM A reading from the Book of Charles Murray. I take my text this week from the Book of Charles Murray, Coming Apart, Chapter 17, "Alternative Futures," page 286, where he invokes the great historian Arnold Toynbee in analyzing the decline of civilizations. Murray, as you may know by now, thinks we are in big trouble because the "single-mother" culture that has so dominated and handicapped African Americans over the last several decades is now spreading to the white working class, where marriage is no longer the norm and up to 50 percent of children are now being born out of wedlock. (I review this book in the ...

When Spoiled-Rotten Children Grow Up March 2, 2012 by Chip Wood Riot police had to be called to an Orlando mall on Feb. 23. Why? Because an unruly crowd of would-be shoppers couldnt wait to get their hands on the new Foamposite One Galaxy by Nike. In case youve never heard of it (I hadnt either), this is a special-edition basketball shoe that Nike introduced just days before the NBA All-Star Game. The House of Hoops by Foot Locker at Florida Mall had ordered a bunch of the shoes and announced that they would be sold (at $220 a pair) on a first-come, first-served basis at midnight. Hundreds of people showed up long before the sale was to begin. Police were called to ...
The Great Debate: How Ron Paul’s Presidency Will Reshape America Post Date: 2012-02-25 15:18:41 by Hondo68

America is a place where neighbors rarely speak openly about politics, and when they do, it is usually only to repeat media sound bites. An Obama / Paul race will change that. Two differing ideologies will Clash. One for greater individual freedom. The other for more government. This competition of ideas will not occur with other Republican candidates, since they are ideologically aligned with President Obama when it comes to the power of the individual over the power of the state. Inevitably, debates will take place between the two candidates. Discussions in the new media will take place on the candidates. And most importantly, neighbors will discuss these two ideologies with each other. ...

President Barack Obama will announce today that hes freeing 10 states from requirements of the No Child Left Behind law as they pursue alternate means of judging student progress, an administration official said. The states obtaining a waiver from the law, pushed by former President George W. Bush, are Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. In exchange for the waiver, the states have agreed to raise standards, improve accountability and take steps to improve teacher effectiveness, said the official, who declined to be identified because an announcement hadnt been made. An 11th state, New Mexico, has ...
Lunch Scholars Video: Something to Remember When Teachers’ Unions Claim They Deserve More Pay Post Date: 2012-02-03 13:32:06 by Happy Quanzaa

As I watched the video above, two thoughts immediately popped into my head: 1. Why do teachers unions claim they deserve more pay and endless benefits when this is the result of their hard work in the classroom? 2. I honestly cant remember anyone this dumb in my Catholic high school back in Ohio when I was going to school in the mid-90s. I do admit theres a caveat to #2 in that there was a girl in my grade school when I was in third or fourth grade who could have starred in this video. Cleveland sits on Americas North Coast (according to the Ohio tourism board at least), on the shores of Lake Erie. You know, one of the Great ...
Mainstream Economics as Ideology: An Interview with Rod Hill and Tony Myatt — Part I Post Date: 2012-01-31 10:37:50 by lucysmom

Philip Pilkington: Your book seems to me a much needed antidote to the mainstream economics textbooks and can either be read alone or together with them. I think thats a great approach because it allows students to become familiar with what is being taught in the classroom but also allows them to take a critical perspective on this material. So, lets start with the format of these textbooks. In the book you say that they cloak themselves in an aura of objectivity. You then relate this to the fact that economics is not a value-free discipline and contains necessary ideological judgements. Could you talk about this a bit? Tony Myatt: Thats correct. We say the ...
Government School: Six Year Old Guilty of Sexual Assault After Playing Tag Post Date: 2012-01-30 20:04:24 by Hondo68

In politically correct San Francisco, a six year old boy was charged with sexual assault after playing a game of tag on the playground. The child was accused of brushing his best friends leg or groin while the two were playing on the playground at Lupine Hills Elementary in Hercules two months ago, according to CBS in San Francisco. The parent of the child said his son was held in the principals office and interrogated. The school coerced a confession from the child. He was suspended and a sexual battery charge was placed on his permanent school record, even though there is no such thing as sexual assault for a six year-old in California. Only after the boys parents hired ...

Bishop of Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg draws anger with Hitler comment By DIANA FISHLOCK The bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg is being criticized for saying Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini would love the countrys public school system because it teaches all children one set of beliefs. Bishop Joseph P. McFadden made the remark while advocating for school vouchers during an interview last week with Dennis Owens, an anchor with WHTM-TV (ABC27). In totalitarian governments, they would love our system, McFadden said to during the interview. This is what Hitler and Mussolini and all those tried to establish a monolith so all the children ...
Beginnings of American Socialism in Public Education? Post Date: 2012-01-22 19:33:53 by CZ82

Beginnings of American Socialism in Public Education? Written on January 19, 2012 by David L. Goetsch In Part One of this series, I provided a definition of socialism as a concept. In this installment I provide a brief historical perspective. Socialisms birth is typically attributed to Karl Marx but, in fact, he wrote only a few pages about the concept in his well-known book, The Communist Manifesto. The original advocates of socialism criticized what they saw as the inequities of the Industrial Revolution. To remedy these perceived inequities they advocated a more egalitarian redistribution of wealth and a reordering of society into small utopian communities in which there would be ...

Two sets of information were presented to me in the last 24 hours that have dramatically reinforced my feeling that diminishing returns have set in to investments in higher education, with increasing evidence suggesting that we are in one respect overinvesting in the field. First, following up on information provided by former student Douglas Himes at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), my sidekick Chris Matgouranis showed me the table reproduced below (And for more see this). Over 317,000 waiters and waitresses have college degrees (over 8,000 of them have doctoral or professional degrees), along with over 80,000 bartenders, and over 18,000 parking lot attendants. All told, ...

Florida Proposal Could Put Vouchers Back on 2012 Statewide Ballot by Education Action Group TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Earlier this year Florida lawmakers voted to put a proposal on the statewide ballot which, if approved by voters, would clear the way for state money to be used for student tuition at religious schools. The same lawmakers also expect the teachers union to launch a legal challenge to their proposal. So they passed another law, allowing the state attorney general to restructure and salvage ballot proposals that are tossed out by the courts before voters have a chance to consider them. As it turns out, application of that law was necessary this week to sidestep a ...

Poster Comment:3900 Saturday Mornings "The older I get, the more I enjoy Saturday mornings. Perhaps it's the quiet solitude that comes with being the first to rise, or maybe it's the unbounded joy of not having to be at work. Either way, the first few hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable. A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the garage with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand and the morning paper in the other. What began as a typical Saturday morning turned into one of those lessons that life seems to hand you from time to time. Let me tell you about it: I turned the dial up into the phone portion of the band on my ham radio in order to listen to a Saturday ...
Review of “Mao: The Unknown Story” by Jung Chang and Jon Halliday Post Date: 2011-10-10 12:25:15 by continental op

Someday, an incredible "life and times" of Mao will be written. This is not that book, but when that book is written, it will draw heavily from this book. Chang and Halliday present a portrait of Mao that remains unsatisfying because Mao comes across as unbelievably evil and petty. I do not mean to suggest that Mao was not unbelievably evil and petty, however there must have been more to his character than evil and pettiness. Mao, after all, did run the worlds most populous country for a long time. He also managed to get a lot of people (e.g. Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger) say a lot of nice things about him. Chang and Halliday portray Maoist China as a Soviet creation. ...
SAT reading scores fall to lowest level on record (Progressive union teachers/Obama) Post Date: 2011-09-14 19:36:38 by Hondo68

SAT reading scores for the high school class of 2011 were the lowest on record, and combined reading and math scores fell to their lowest point since 1995. The College Board, which released the scores Wednesday, said the results reflect the record size and diversity of the pool of test-takers. As more students aim for college and take the exam, it tends to drag down average scores. Meanwhile, other tests taken by more representative groups of high school students have shown reading skills holding steadier. And in the context of the 800-point test, the three-point decline in reading scores to 497 may seem little more than a blip. Still, it's just the second time in the last two decades ...

Who and whoever are subjective pronouns; whom and whomever are in the objective case. As simple and important as that distinction is, many people have difficulty deciding on the proper usage of who and whom in sentences. The two sentences below illustrate the easy usage in which who is clearly the subject and whom is clearly the object. In such simple cases, virtually everyone can determine the proper choice: Who is that masked man? (Who / subject) The men, four of whom are ill, were indicted for fraud. (whom / object) When who is not the main subject of the ...
