Seven years ago, Boeing and Raytheon teamed up to build anAirborne Laserfor the U.S. Air Force. Image source:Wikimedia Commons. Boeing is building a laser gun for the U.S. Marine Corps. No, not that ray gun you see above -- that was the U.S. Air Force Airborne Laser. And no, we're not talking about Boeing's Advanced Tactical Laser or its Laser Avenger projects, either. Respectively, those weapons systems require anything from the size of a Boeing 747 to a small tank to lug them around. Boeing's newest laser weapon system, in contrast, is small enough to be transported by hand. Boeing's new Compact Laser Weapon System (LWS), in four easily assembled parts. Image source: U.S. ...

BERLIN (AP) — A robot has killed a contractor at one of Volkswagen's production plants in Germany, the automaker said Wednesday. The man died Monday at the plant in Baunatal, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Frankfurt, VW spokesman Heiko Hillwig said. The 22-year-old was part of a team that was setting up the stationary robot when it grabbed and crushed him against a metal plate, Hillwig said.He said initial conclusions indicate that human error was to blame, rather than a problem with the robot, which can be programmed to perform various tasks in the assembly process. He said it normally operates within a confined area at the plant, grabbing auto parts and manipulating ...

Meet the Landmine-Detecting Giant Rats of Cambodia

It is one of these stories that can be told in a single sentence: Cambodia is training an elite squad of giant rats imported from Africa to detect landmines. The technique has reportedly been used successfully in various African nations, including Tanzania, Mozambique, and Angola, according to AFP. This video from 2013 shows how it was done in Mozambique, with handlers using poles and leashes to guide mine-sniffing rats that weigh up to 1.2 kilograms: The rat squads, trained by a Belgian non-government organization called Apopo, are said to have uncovered over 2,400 mines in Mozambique. As CNN reported in September 2014, these rats are considered “heroes” and given as gifts in ...

Meteorologists Dismantle Bill Nye’s Alarmist Global Warming Claims

Bill Nye the “Science Guy” is once again trying to blame global warming for a series of weather events happening around the U.S., but this time meteorologists aren’t having it. Meteorologists criticized Nye’s claim that warm temperatures in Alaska and flooding in Texas are a product of man-made global warming. As Tropical Storm Bill (no relation to Nye) was projected to make landfall in Texas, Nye tweeted: Bill floods Texas. Alaska is on fire. Just a little global warming & climate change. Nothing to worry about… pic.twitter.com/l2qAaiytE6 — Bill Nye (@BillNye) June 16, 2015 Nye has been been relentless in trying to connect such extreme weather events to ...

America’s Most Advanced Climate Station Data Shows US In A 10-Year Cooling Trend
Post Date: 2015-06-16 07:10:37 by Tooconservative

Data from America’s most advanced climate monitoring system shows the U.S. has undergone a cooling trend over the last decade, despite recent claims by government scientists that warming has accelerated worldwide during that time. The U.S. Climate Reference Network was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide “high-quality” climate data. The network consists of 114 stations across the U.S. in areas NOAA expects no development for the next 50 to 100 years. The climate stations use three independent measurements of temperature and precipitation to provide “continuity of record and maintenance of well-calibrated and highly accurate ...

Elon "Enron" Musk, receiving transmissions from MarsPALO ALTO, Calif. -- When it unveiled the Model S, Tesla Motors Inc. crowed about its fast-swapping technology, demonstrating in 2013 that a depleted battery could be swapped for a fresh one in minutes. Later, it built a swap station in Harris Ranch, Calif., halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, to test the technology. But there’s a problem, Tesla CEO Elon Musk says: Customers aren’t interested. “People don’t care about pack swap,” Musk said Tuesday at the company’s annual shareholder meeting. Tesla’s proprietary Superchargers, which can top off the battery in the Model S with 200 ...

Solar Professional: Elon Musk's 3-Biggest Powerwall Whoppers

Elon Musk's 3-Biggest Powerwall Whoppers Elon Musk is a visionary (ROFL) and a showman, but occasionally his enthusiasm for his vision gets way out ahead of reality. Nowhere was that disconnect more on display than this past week when he made his much talked about announcement of the Tesla Powerwall battery storage system. While we share the vision for the potential of battery systems (such as the one Enphase Energy is set to release later this year, albeit in a far more understated fashion), when 38,000 people go online to order a product that doesn’t yet exist, it is time to debunk some of the more exorbitant claims made by Musk. Here are the three biggest whoppers that Musk ...

Another global warming catastrophe: the Sahara Desert is getting greener [Greenland too]

This story is actually quite fascinating and it obviously has something to do with changes in the climate, but just how to explain it all remains a subject of contention. You would think that increasing temperatures would make things worse in the deserts of the world, but in a rather counterintuitive instance of planet watching, it appears that the Sahara desert may actually be shrinking. A few thousand years ago, a mighty river flowed through the Sahara across what is today Sudan. The Wadi Howar—now just a dried-out riverbed for most of the year—sustained not just fish, crocodiles, and hippopotamuses, but also agriculture and human settlement. As late as 1,000 B.C., a powerful ...

More Countries Caught Manipulating Their Climate Data

Weather agencies in Australia, Paraguay and Switzerland may be manipulating temperature data to create a sharper warming trend than is present in the raw data — a practice that has come under scrutiny in recent months. Most recently, Dr. H. Sterling Burnett with the Heartland Institute detailed how the Swiss Meteorological Service adjusted its climate data “to show greater warming than actually measured by its temperature instruments.” In his latest article, Sterling wrote that Switzerland’s weather bureau adjusted its raw temperature data so that “the temperatures reported were consistently higher than those actually recorded.” For example, the cities of Sion ...

GOP Works to Defund Studies So They Can Deny Climate Change

Rather than address or even face the impending issues surrounding climate change, the GOP has chosen instead to stick their fingers in their ears. Not only do they want to simply ignore the problem, but they are trying to make it difficult for the rest of us to even know that it exists.Last week, the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, headed by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), approved a bill that would slash at least $300 million from NASA's Earth-science budget. As Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas) pointed out, "Earth science, of course, includes climate science." Rep. Smith claims that the White House's NASA budget request favored the ...

Not only is the global concentration of the greenhouse gas the highest since the beginning of modern records, it's also rising incredibly fast, according to a US government angency. The world has reached a daunting climate milestone: the global concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the most prevalent greenhouse gases, has surpassed 400 parts per million (ppm). In March 2015, the global monthly average CO2 concentration reached 400.83 ppm, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced. That is the first month in modern records with a global concentration of more than 400 ppm. "It's both disturbing and daunting," said Pieter Tans, chief ...
