What If Christmas Is Real?

What if Christmas is a core belief in the birth of Jesus Christ who lived among us and many times offered a freely given promise of eternal life that no believer should reject or apologize for? What if Christmas is the rebirth of Christ in the hearts of all believers? What if Christmas is the potential rebirth of Christ in every heart that will have Him, whether currently a believer or not? Charity: Biblical and Political
Post Date: 2022-12-24 00:16:14 by Charles_Byrd

Charity is defined as an “act of loving all men as brothers because they are sons of God.” This is a purely personal matter; an act voluntarily performed by one person for another; an act of faith in God and His commandments for governing our relationships with our fellow men. When we keep this concept in mind, it becomes a simple matter to distinguish between true charity and the spurious schemes that now masquerade under its name. The original concept of charity as an expression of love, now appears to have been largely replaced by a concept of government-guaranteed security…. [But] how can charity — the love of a person for his fellow men — ever be connected ...

Yes, Jesus Would Have Been Branded a Domestic Extremist

The Christmas story of a baby born in a manger is a familiar one. The Roman Empire, a police state in its own right, had ordered that a census be conducted. Joseph and his pregnant wife Mary traveled to the little town of Bethlehem so that they could be counted. There being no room for the couple at any of the inns, they stayed in a stable (a barn), where Mary gave birth to a baby boy, Jesus. Warned that the government planned to kill the baby, Jesus’ family fled with him to Egypt until it was safe to return to their native land. Click for Full Text!

If we believe in limited government, we must save the Electoral College.

The Electoral College is under bitter attack by Democrats and has been for decades. After the 2000 presidential election, Hillary Clinton told reporters, “it’s time to do away with the Electoral College and move to the popular election of our president.” Twenty years later, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren advocated abolishing the Electoral College while running for president. The Electoral College is a friend to those who believe in limited government and our federalist system. We must save it. Click for Full Text!

In his famous dissent in Olmstead v. United States, Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis in 1928 called the right to be left alone the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized men. He was referring to the right to be left alone from the government — a right that today we call privacy. Olmstead was involved in bootlegging, and the feds tapped his phones without any search warrants. The Supreme Court, which had never recognized the right to privacy, permitted the use of the overheard conversations as evidence in his criminal trial. Click for Full Text!

Politics Is Getting in the Way of What Makes Cities Great
Post Date: 2022-12-16 16:50:53 by Charles_Byrd

Progressives loves cities, yet refuse to address the degree to which their policies have made urban life a bigger chore than needed. Conservatives depict cities as dystopian hellholes. They delight in highlighting the crime problems, poorly functional school systems, homeless encampments, and other urban problems that seem unsolvable. The message from the former: We should all live in densely packed urban areas, where we can stroll to cafes and stores and take the bus to work, but we can't (or won't) make the streets safer, the schools better or the transit systems less miserable. The message from the latter: Stay away from cities and hole up in placid but uninteresting suburbs. ...

You've Got to Be Kidding: Nussbaum Demands Animals Stop Eating Each Other
Post Date: 2022-12-16 16:11:50 by Charles_Byrd

Sometimes you encounter a proposal that is so daft that you think to yourself, “The author can’t be serious!” In today’s column, I’d like to discuss an example of this sort that comes from one of the world’s most eminent moral philosophers, Martha C. Nussbaum. In her article, “A Peopled Wilderness,” appearing in the New York Review of Books, December 8, 2022, Nussbaum suggests that we need to think seriously about curbing predation in nature. It disturbs her that animals eat other animals: this is not how things ought to be. We must be careful in what we try to do to correct this morally bad state of affairs, since through lack of knowledge, we may ...

The tyranny of the majority

"Which is better — to be ruled by one tyrant three thousand miles away, or three thousand tyrants one mile away?" — Rev. Mather Blyes, 1706-1788 Does it really matter if the instrument curtailing liberty is a monarch or a popularly elected legislature? This conundrum, along with the witty version of it put to a Boston crowd in 1775 by the little-known colonial-era preacher with the famous uncle — Cotton Mather, addresses the age-old question of whether liberty can survive in a democracy. Seared souls: How we abuse our children

Since I’m going to be criticizing a now widely accepted phenomenon, this piece may evoke eyerolls from some supporters. So be it, because certain things need to be said. I must confess that with the way many of my fellow adults behave today, it can make me ashamed to be one. I almost sometimes feel as if I want to apologize to the children for the example the contemporary grown-up world now sets. We often lament, and rightly so, how disrespectful many modern youths are, yet a prerequisite for commanding respect is being respectable. There is little respectable about modern American culture. Marine veteran Terry Bagley, a 70-year-old father of five who does housekeeping at a Veterans Affairs hospital, was walking to buy items for Thanksgiving in the Pigtown area of Baltimore, Maryland, on the Tuesday afternoon before the holiday. On his way to the market, a rowhome on the block exploded—likely from a ruptured gas line. Bagley reportedly wasted no time hurrying to the rescue of anyone who might be trapped inside the burning building. Firefighters later found him in the rubble. Bagley, in critical condition, was placed in a medically induced coma. His injuries—including a broken pelvis, femur, and hand—will require surgery. (A GoFundMe page set up for the Vietnam ...

Restoring Society’s Foundations Isn’t a Lost Cause

Were you to peer into my brain in recent months, you would find that a main thought running through it is our country’s desperate need for restoration and repair. Not so much in the physical sense, but in the mental, emotional, and spiritual sense—a renewal of the foundations upon which basic life in this country has long been built: faith, family, and education. It’s easy to look at the swampy mess that surrounds us, throw up our hands, and bemoan with the Psalmist, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Click for Full Text!

Not too long ago, had the sentence “I am a woman trapped in a man’s body” been uttered to anyone – to a doctor, a friend, a relative – it would have been seen as a psychiatric problem in the one speaking the words. Help, from a psychiatrist or a priest, would have been advised or encouraged. Today, even to suggest any help or guidance is needed – let alone to provide such help or guidance – is criminal…even when the one saying such words is a child. Click for Full Text!

Woke Joke

In these willfully ignorant times, the powers that be seem, in their haste to be politically correct, to forget that America fought its bloodiest war to end human bondage. Almost three-quarters of a million men died, yet the Civil War is being refought with fact-purging propaganda that makes cartoon villains of great American soldiers, while one group of citizens is robbed of their heritage in order to please another. About one year ago I found myself in a car with a New York couple, both guests of an ex-headmaster (sorry, head of school; use of the word “headmaster” leads one to a woke gulag) of my prep school who was accompanying me to an unveiling of a wall honoring an ...

A few nights ago, my mother-in-law stopped by to drop something off. As a fellow Christmas enthusiast, she was quite excited that we had a YouTube video of a fireplace playing on our television. I began to share how I discovered it, which brought me to the story of one Christmas in college. A Christmas Eve where I found myself alone in front of my TV, on a channel that was broadcasting a fireplace scene, wishing for a family for Christmas. Click for Full Text!

Editorial: California still violates the Constitution on bail
Post Date: 2022-12-08 21:34:42 by Charles_Byrd

The purpose of bail is to get people out of jail. There continues to be broad misunderstanding of that basic principle among Californians generally, and blatant violation of it — knowing or otherwise — among police and judges. The right to bail under the state and federal constitutions routinely gets stood on its head, so that instead of being used to get people out of jail, bail is misused to keep people in. It’s Time to Remove “Public” From Public Broadcasting

I’m a consumer of public broadcasting. I’m currently subscribing to Passport, PBS’s streaming app, so I can catch up on all the Ken Burns documentaries. And I used to enjoy NPR news and other programming: the longform, in depth reporting on a range of topics, the absence of talking head shouting matches, and a Prairie Home Companion before Garrison Keillor retired, especially his “News from Lake Wobegon” monologues. Admittedly, my taste is probably conditioned by my Swedish upbringing with subdued news reporting and other programming limited to two public TV and three public radio channels (it has long since changed to a more American model with cable and, more ...

How to replace the welfare state

The American people donated a record $3.1 billion for charities this past week, proving once again they are the most charitable people on Earth, despite the inflation that is making it difficult for millions of families to make ends meet. Thank you, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and his fellow “legal counterfeiters.” For more than three decades I have been advocating that individuals receive a tax credit, instead of tax deduction for every dollar donated to a 501(c) 3 organization that provides nonprofit services such as education, healthcare, food banks, pregnancy crisis counselling, etc. Click for Full Text!

A Tribute to the U.S. Marine Corps

A recent United States Marine Corps recruitment advertisement tells us: “When there are battles to win for America’s future, there is one constant: Marines.” Despite the advert being a minute-long, propagandizing call to imperial action, this line rings true. One of the most astonishing things about the woke is their high boredom threshold. They seem to have the same thoughts about the same subjects, expressed in the same language, all their waking lives. They never tire or let their vigilance down. They look at Raphael or Botticelli and see only social injustice. They are terrible bores. The explanation of their persistence, which resembles that of flies on a corpse, is that truth, which holds no interest for them, is not their object, but power, the cynosure of every ambitious mediocrity’s eyes. To change the metaphor slightly, the lunatics have taken over the asylum or, in the case of the museums, the philistines. Click for Full Text!

Richard John Neuhaus’s quote from the April 1988 edition of Commentary magazine may be the single most prescient explanation of how contemporary “bioethics” went off the rail (and took us with it) as you will ever read. Fr. Neuhaus, whom I was proud to interview and call a friend, cautioned that there are “political, legal, and moral resources to resist scenarios of the worse inevitably coming to the worst,” only to observe just two paragraphs later, “All that said, we are nonetheless witnessing the return of eugenics.” Sometimes the intersection of eugenics and abortion is so obvious that only the only reason we don’t evaluate on the union is ...
