Republicans’ Job-Growth Supply-Side Time Warp Post Date: 2011-06-07 20:10:40 by Brian S

Republicans are trying to change the subject from deficits and entitlements to the economy and jobs. In recent weeks, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Senator Rob Portman have each introduced jobs plans. This new focus is in part a reaction to polls saying that the Republican Medicare plan is unpopular and that the weak economy remains voters top concern. But it also reflects an old division among Republicans -- and reveals the inadequacy of the partys recent approach to reviving the economy. The party formed its current economic views in the late 1970s, when an upstart band of journalists, politicians and economists, soon labeled supply-siders, overthrew its ...
Paul Revere’s Ride, as told by Sarah Palin Post Date: 2011-06-04 03:58:48 by Ferret Mike

Oh, no. Among other highlights of her Maybe Its Just A Vacation Bus Tour, Sarah Palin attempted to retell the story of Paul Revere. It went badly. Admittedly, it always goes badly when anyone tries to retell history, even when sober, since we collectively have the historical and civics knowledge of a group of pigeons who paid limited attention in middle school. But this was almost poetic. So here, with apologies to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow about the scansion, is the Sarah Palin edition of the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. Listen my children and you shall hear Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere As told by the Palin who comes from AK With fire in the belly and things to say ...

Jailhouse Crock By Christopher Orlet on 6.2.11 @ 6:07AM Here's something you don't read everyday: "Putting People in Jail Does Not Lower the Crime Rate." Unless you are a subscriber to The Nation or a visitor to the MSNBC website. Then you probably do read that every day, or something equally counterintuitive. I confess I do visit the MSNBC website most days. Where else am I going to get story ideas and a good laugh at the same time? The other day I clicked on a segment with Tulane Professor Melissa Harris-Perry, a self-styled expert on crime and punishment. I was curious why we were putting ordinary people in jail in hopes of lowering the crime rate. Seemed a tad ...
The danger of indefinite detention Post Date: 2011-06-03 07:00:49 by A K A Stone

The House Judiciary committee plans on Thursday to move forward a bill to create a system of indefinite detention for immigrants in the United States. The bill would allow the government to detain deportable immigrants who cant be sent home for as long as they live. Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) has described H.R. 1932 as a way to protect endangered U.S. citizens from criminal immigrants. He did not mention that the bill does away with the constitutional protection against indefinite detention, nor did he mention that the bill very likely violates U.S. obligations under international human rights law. To understand the scope of Chairman ...
Barack Obama and the Betrayal of Black America Post Date: 2011-06-02 19:24:28 by CZ82

Barack Obama and the Betrayal of Black America By Chidike Okeem When Barack Obama was elected as the president of the United States, black liberals dreamily believed that the numerous maladies in the black community would cease to exist. They believed that his election was indicative of a vigorous wind of political and social change that was blowing across the country. Barack Obama himself vowed that his election would demarcate the conclusion of grisly "politics as usual" from the commencement of political and democratic freshness. However, as this administration continues on, it is abundantly clear that Obama has not only failed to deliver in a general sense, but he has also ...
Dumb Question of the Twenty-first Century: Is It Legal? Post Date: 2011-05-31 23:24:24 by A K A Stone

Is the Libyan war legal? Was Bin Ladens killing legal? Is it legal for the president of the United States to target an American citizen for assassination? Were those enhanced interrogation techniques legal? These are all questions raised in recent weeks. Each seems to call out for debate, for answers. Or does it? Now, you couldnt call me a legal scholar. Ive never set foot inside a law school, and in 66 years only made it onto a single jury (dismissed before trial when the civil suit was settled out of court). Still, I feel at least as capable as any constitutional law professor of answering such questions. My answer is this: they are irrelevant. Think of ...
R.I.P. Reaganomics Revolution: 1981-2011: Like The Roaring Twenties, Ending In A Crash Post Date: 2011-05-31 15:51:14 by Brian S

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (MarketWatch) The 30-year Reaganomics Revolution will be over soon. Like the Roaring Twenties, ending in the game changing crash. Though more than 80 years apart, they share a common theme song of irrational exuberance: Im Forever Blowing Bubbles. Many bubbles, now merging like tornadoes, in a perfect storm, a megabubble itching to blow, signaling the end of the ego-centered Reaganomics Revolution, which must, unfortunately, also take down Americas markets, economy and monetary system. Yes, folks, that one song captures the collective mind-set of both the Roaring Twenties and the Reaganomics Revolution: Forever blowing bubbles. ...
Teabagger Queen Palin Spits on Nation's War Dead Post Date: 2011-05-30 14:41:48 by Brian S

If it's Memorial Day this is the day for all of the gutless right-wingers and teabagger Republicans to desecrate the flag by wrapping themselves in it while they pontificate about their fascist ideology and spit on the graves of those who died to at least in theory protect our freedoms. America's favorite parasite, Sarah Palin has never been accused of having dignity nor shame but this latest cynical re-launch represents a new low for the white trash diva from Wasilla. In yet another of the now standard orgies of shameful behavior that charlatans engage in, Sarah 'lock and load' Palin has latched onto the Rolling Thunder Memorial Day rally as her latest public relations ...
When Faith In U.S. Dollars And U.S. Debt Is Dead The Game Is Over – And That Day Is Closer Than You May Think Post Date: 2011-05-30 10:03:58 by A K A Stone

A day is coming when the rest of the world will decide that it no longer has faith in U.S. dollars or in U.S. debt. When that day arrives, the game will be over. Traditionally, two of the biggest things that the U.S. economy has had going for it were the U.S. dollar and U.S. Treasuries. The U.S. dollar has been the default reserve currency of the world for decades. All over the globe it was seen as a strong, stable currency that was desirable for international trade. U.S. government debt has long been considered the safest debt in the entire world. Whenever there was a major crisis, investors would flock to U.S. Treasuries because they were considered a rock. Sadly, all of this ...

Windows 8 Should Be Free Post Date: 2011-05-29 19:45:37 by Ferret Mike

If Win 8 only includes the superficial features that are predicted, then it's a tweak of Win 7, not a new OS, and we shouldn't have to pay for it. According to various reports, some contradictory, Windows 8 may be upon us in 2012. I have to ask the obvious question: Who cares? I don't ask this to be caviler. I really would like to know if anyone cares. In the olden days, when a new OS was released, there was always a reason and always a need. For example, when 3.5-inch floppies came out, the drivers needed to be incorporated into the new OS. Or when volume sizes of the hard drive went beyond the ability of the OS to recognize them, support for the ubiquitous CD-ROM had to be ...

As world burns, G8 leaders fiddle ... with the Internet. Seriously? 4 and 1 By James M. Roberts / May 25, 2011 Sarkozy, Obama, and the other leaders at the G8 should be evaluating the policies that have brought them to the brink of financial ruin. Unfortunately, their attention will be elsewhere: on Internet regulation, for one thing. President Obama will join other G8 leaders today at the posh, French seaside resort of Deauville. On the agenda: proposed global regulations for the Internet, post-tsunami Japan, and military escapades in North Africa. Bizarrely absent from the top priorities listed by hosting head of state Nicolas Sarkozy is the most urgent issue of all: the need to rein ...

snip These are terrible times for many people in this country. Poverty, especially acute poverty, has soared in the economic slump; millions of people have lost their homes. Young people cant find jobs; laid-off 50-somethings fear that theyll never work again. Yet if you want to find real political rage the kind of rage that makes people compare President Obama to Hitler, or accuse him of treason you wont find it among these suffering Americans. Youll find it instead among the very privileged, people who dont have to worry about losing their jobs, their homes, or their health insurance, but who are outraged, outraged, at the thought of paying ...
The silver lining behind the NY 26 cloud Post Date: 2011-05-27 17:36:27 by CZ82

The silver lining behind the NY 26 cloud Steve McCann The mainstream media and the Democrats have been positively giddy this week over the results of the special election in House District 26 in Western New York. Beyond the obvious issues of the impact of a faux Tea Party candidate who spent nearly $3 million of his own money on the campaign and the actual minimal impact of the Medicare issue, the real story is: this is an almost non-story but one that benefits the Republicans in the longer run. The results of the 2010 Census will cause New York to lose 2 Congressional seats. As the Times Union (Albany N.Y.) points out: The 2010 Census map released Thursday suggests western New York ...
A Generational Divide? Post Date: 2011-05-27 06:23:33 by CZ82

A Generational Divide? By Jeffrey Folks In Running on Empty, Peter G. Peterson excoriates the "we-first" attitude of retiring baby boomers. Having read Peterson's take on boomer retirement, one is left with the impression that boomers are selfishly intent on bankrupting future generations and driving America into permanent decline to boot. Happily, Peterson concludes, there is a solution: higher taxes and reduced benefits. This is what Peterson calls "real leadership." Breaking promises and raising taxes may seem like "leadership" to some, but in fact it is just another effort to excuse and facilitate irresponsible spending by future administrations. ...
NY 26: Democrats should thank Paul Ryan [Full Thread] Post Date: 2011-05-24 23:58:48 by go65

There is no way for Republicans to spin away Democrat Kathy Hochuls victory in New Yorks deeply red 26th congressional district. This is a big setback for Paul Ryans budget and a warning for Republican incumbents everywhere. This is simply not a district a Republican should have lost. Conservative overreach has clearly woken up Democrats and has gone down badly with independents. The GOP cant claim that Republican Jane Corwin lost because of a vote split with Tea Party candidate Jack Davis. With 87 percent of the precincts in, Hochul had 48 percent to Corwins 42 percent. Davis got just 9 percent, and the Green Party candidate picked up 1 percent. Lets ...
Crime and Punishment Peels Kennedy From Conservatives Post Date: 2011-05-24 21:54:06 by Ferret Mike

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy's majority opinion forcing California to cut its inmate population sharpened his divide with conservative colleagues over what constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. Backed by the court's four liberals, Justice Kennedy has delivered a series of opinions since 2005 that have abolished the death penalty for minors and for adult criminals who left their victims alive. A Kennedy ruling also required that juvenile offenders be given an opportunity to seek parole unless their crimes included murder. And on Monday, the Reagan appointee wrote the decision prohibiting California from housing inmates in prisons incapable of providing with them ...

Pastors Respond to Cameron Diaz's Marriage Is Dying Remarks Post Date: 2011-05-22 22:54:01 by Ferret Mike

Marriage is a dying institution, actress Cameron Diaz asserts. Psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow agrees with her and to a certain extent, so do pastors. We go through our lives, day by day, striving to walk the walk, live like Christ, worship, pray and praise and do the right thing, yet in all honesty, our marriages are failing, said the Revs. Mike and Trisha Fox of Marriage for Today and authors of Marriage for Today: A Practical Guide for Couples. Diazs views on marriage were revealed in the June issue of Maxim magazine. The 38-year-old actress said, I dont think we should live our lives in relationships based off old traditions that dont suit ...

Editorial: For Democrats, It's All About Tax Hikes Posted 05/20/2011 06:46 PM ET Politics: If nothing else, last week made it abundantly clear where Democrats stand on today's most pressing issues, and the picture isn't pretty. In case you missed it, the Democrats floated a plan for a millionaire surtax in an attempt to, as the Hill put it, "force Republicans to accept other tax increases." They tried to hike taxes on oil companies by more than $2 billion a year, because the industry is currently making big profits; and mounted a nationwide campaign to scare seniors away from Rep. Paul Ryan's Medicare reform including a new ad that depicts Ryan tossing a ...
Obama and the Dilemmas of US Middle East Policy Post Date: 2011-05-20 10:08:17 by go65

President Obamas major policy address on the Middle East got many things right. He pointed to al- Qaeda and terrorism, which targets civilians, as a dead end. He sided rhetorically with the grassroots movements for greater democracy in the region. He condemned outright the longstanding regimes, like that of Hosni Mubarak, that had been US allies, which ruled through sordid police states. He pledged US support for democracy movements. He avoided hypocrisy by condemning US allies such as the king of Bahrain and President Ali Abdullah Saleh of Yemen for repressing their own movements. He acknowledged the importance of ending the Palestinian peoples long sojourn in the wilderness of ...
Obama Cried, Kids Died Post Date: 2011-05-19 06:57:11 by CZ82

Obama Cried, Kids Died by Ann Coulter "Humanitarian" seems to be the Democrats' new word for "absolutely no national interest." The Democrats were not so interested in a "humanitarian" intervention against a much more brutal dictator in Iraq. But, of course, taking out Saddam Hussein, a state sponsor of terrorism who harbored one of the perpetrators of the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center, would make Americans safer. Democrats are furious whenever American boys (girls and gays) are put in harm's way -- unless the troops are on a mission that has nothing whatsoever to do with defending the United States. Obama ignored the murder, imprisonment ...

To Liberals, Every Woman Looks Like a Hotel Maid by Ann Coulter, 05/18/2011 I suppose we'll know the truth when the DNA testing comes back, but close observers of privileged liberal men are not shocked by the accusations against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the socialist head of the International Monetary Fund. (And you thought you were getting screwed by your banker!) Only in Hollywood movies are handsome lacrosse players from nice families seen as likely rapists. In real life, they look more like the 5-foot-2-inch Roman Polanski or pudgy, unathletic Bill Clinton -- or the homunculus 5-foot-2-inch Strauss-Kahn. But, it is argued, how could Strauss-Kahn possibly think he could get away ...
