The standing of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin has risen to its highest level in more than a decade following a sustained Kremlin campaign to stress the tyrant's achievements, a new poll shows. More than one third of Russians believed Stalin's leadership during the Second World War vindicated his murderous reign at the helm of the Soviet Union. Almost as many believe that Russia needs a leader like Stalin today. The survey was released as the Russian Communist party, the second biggest party in parliament, celebrated the 130th anniversary of Stalin's birth. Supporters laid wreaths at Stalin's grave by the Kremlin wall as party leaders compared his "immortal" ...

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) President Hugo Chavez on Sunday accused the U.S. of violating Venezuela's airspace with an unmanned spy plane, and ordered his military to be on alert and shoot down any such aircraft in the future. Speaking during his weekly television and radio program, Chavez said the aircraft overflew a Venezuelan military base in the western state of Zulia after taking off from neighboring Colombia. He did not elaborate, but suggested the plane was being used for espionage. "These are the Yankees. They are entering Venezuela," he said. "I've ordered them to be shot down," Chavez said of the aircraft. "We cannot permit this." ...

The Palestinian terrorist organisation admitted providing information to sympathisers who last month handed the information to Westminster Magistrates Court. Ms Livni, who was a cabinet minister during the Israeli offensive in Gaza that started last year, was forced to cancel a trip to London last week. A diplomatic incident was averted only after Ms Livni, now Opposition Leader, was alerted to the warrant and pulled out of a speaking engagement at the last minute. The incident was a major embarrassment for Gordon Brown, who phoned the Israeli MP last ...

On orders from President Barack Obama, the U.S. military launched cruise missiles early Thursday against two suspected al-Qaeda sites in Yemen, administration officials told ABC News in a report broadcast on ABC World News with Charles Gibson. One of the targeted sites was a suspected al Qaeda training camp north of the capitol, Sanaa, and the second target was a location where officials said "an imminent attack against a U.S. asset was being planned." The Yemen attacks by the U.S. military represent a major escalation of the Obama administration's campaign against al Qaeda. In his speech about added troops for Afghanistan earlier this month, President Obama made a brief ...

Father Thomas Naughton pleaded guilty in Bray Circuit Court Dec. 16 to five charges of indecent assault on the boy when he was assigned to a parish in Valleymount, southeast of Dublin, between 1982 and 1984. The abuse, which started when the victim was 6 years old, was described by Judge Michael O'Shea as "systematic, shocking and horrific." 50 days to save the world? I might listen to the doomsayers if they weren't such ludicrous hypocrites Post Date: 2009-12-19 16:59:05 by Mad Dog

Not many people understand climate change. But they can recognise hypocrisy when they see it, and are also likely to count their spoons whenever wild-eyed politicians invoke the impending end of the world. On Tuesday, Prince Charles flew to Copenhagen to attend the climate change summit, where he delivered a keynote speech. He informed his audience that 'the world has only seven years before we lose the levers of control'. Not at all long, then. Prince Charles used the Queen's Flight to travel to Copenhagen to speak at the climate change conference For the Prince this was an important speech with an important message. If we have so little time, and man-made climate change ...

The surprising acknowledgment followed months of repeated denials by police and other authorities that the deaths of protesters in Iranian custody were caused by abuse. WASHINGTON -- After a day spent frantically darting around Copenhagen trying to locate world leaders, getting snubbed by China's premier and crashing a meeting where he had initially been kept out, President Obama heralded a last-minute, largely toothless UN global-warming summit deal that drew fast fire from all sides as a sham. Almost no one was happy with the outcome of the two-week confab and even the president, who was slammed by liberals and Republicans alike, along with other world leaders, admitted that the pact doesn't legally commit any of the nations involved -- the point of the summit in the first place. Obama may become known as "the man who killed ...

The Time Traveler appeared suddenly in my study on New Years Eve, 2004. He was a stolid, grizzled man in a gray tunic and looked to be in his late-sixties or older. He also appeared to be the veteran of wars or of some terrible accident since he had livid scars on his face and neck and hands, some even visible in his scalp beneath a fuzz of gray hair cropped short in a military cut. One eye was covered by a black eyepatch. Before I could finish dialing 911 he announced in a husky voice that he was a Time Traveler come back to talk to me about the future. Being a sometimes science-fiction writer but not a fool, I said, Prove it. Do you remember Replay? he ...

Barack Obama emerged from the chaotic final hours of the Copenhagen summit last night having salvaged an agreement for action on global warming and his own reputation as a politician who can bridge the most challenging of political divides. After 15 hours of negotiations, an exhausted looking Obama said he managed to secure a deal on climate change incorporating America's three main goals of emissions cuts, financial aid for the poorest countries, and a measure of accountability for emissions pledges from developing countries. But he acknowledged the skimpy 2.5 page draft produced at the end of his effort was not the comprehensive agreement he had come to Copenhagen for. ...

The United Nations climate change summit ended last night without setting any emission reduction targets. President Obama forged a non-binding agreement with his counterparts in China, India, Brazil and South Africa but it was unclear whether all 192 countries would accept the compromise text. Mr Obama said that a fundamental deadlock in perspectives had overshadowed the negotiations. He described the deal as meaningful but admitted that it would not be enough to prevent global warming. We have much further to go, he said. Despite two years of negotiations, the key sticking points emissions cuts, monitoring of emissions and the legal nature of ...

Veteran Cuban leader Fidel Castro on Friday dismissed US President Barack Obama's trip to UN climate change talks in Copenhagen as a "show," and complained that the world's poor will shoulder the burden of any summit agreement. Castro's opinion article, titled "The Moment of Truth," also criticizes the "fascist methods" used by Danish police to put down protesting environmental activists. "It is already evident that a great catastrophe threatens our species," wrote Castro, 82. Perhaps the worst part of the summit "is blind selfishness of a rich and privileged minority that intents to impose the bulk of the necessary sacrifices on ...

COPENHAGEN -- Green groups on Friday named Canada "Fossil of the Year" -- an award that carried the additional honorific of "Colossal Fossil" -- for what they said was a strategy to sabotage efforts to tackle climate change. "Canada's 2020 [emissions] target is among the worst in the industrialised world, and leaked cabinet documents revealed that the government is contemplating a cap-and-trade plan so weak that it would put even that target out of reach," said Climate Action Network International and Avaaz.org. "This government thinks there's a choice between environment and economy, and for them, tar sands beats climate every time. ...

Dec. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Iranian forces yesterday entered Iraqi territory at dawn and occupied well number 4 in the East Maysan oil field, Border Guard General Zafer Nazmi said. The two neighbors have disputed the border of southeast Iraq for decades. They positioned tanks around it and dug trenches, General Nazmi said by phone from Basra. They are still there, they raised the flag. East Maysan in southern Iraq is an old oil field that is no longer in production, according to Nazmi.
