WASHINGTON Up to 10,000 U.S. troops will be in Haiti or off its shores by Monday to distribute aid and prevent potential rioting among desperate earthquake survivors, it was disclosed Friday, as President Obama promised long-term reconstruction help. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also said the total American presence in and around the beleaguered country could rise beyond 10,000 as U.S. military officers determine how much assistance may be needed in the days ahead. His assessment came as the State Department updated the toll of U.S. dead from Tuesday's 7.0 magnitude quake to six and cautioned that the casualty count is likely to rise still further. ...

Actor Danny Glover believes that the Haitian earthquake was caused by climate change and global warming: Says Glover: When we see what we did at the climate summit in Copenhagen, this is the response, this is what happens, you know what Im sayin? His obscene opinion would be bigger news if Glover had in the manner of others idiotically blamed a less-fashionable deity.
Haiti: Should we help them or should we focus on problems, financial & otherwise, here in the US? Post Date: 2010-01-14 18:34:23 by 3-Dee

The U.S. is sending aid to Haiti in the form of troops, money, etc. The White House has pledged $100 million to help Haitians. Considering the problems here in the U.S.-unemployment, foreclosures, national debt, our military engagements in other countries, etc., is it really a good idea to help?

Beijing to Host First Mr. Gay China Pageant January 14, 2010 BEIJING The Mr. Gay China pageant is coming up and contestant David Wu is a bit worried. It's not the underwear competition that's making him jittery he's been working out harder than usual to get ready. And he's looking forward to the opportunity to meet other "comrades," as gay men in China are called. Just one thing troubles the handsome 30-year-old: His parents don't know he's gay. "Most Chinese media won't cover it (the pageant), so I think it's unlikely that my parents will find out about me because of this event," said Wu, from the southwestern city of ...
PROMISES, PROMISES: Many Obama pledges unkept Post Date: 2010-01-14 16:26:31 by WhiteSands

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama ends his first year in office with his to-do list still long and his unfulfilled campaign promises stacked high. From winding down the war in Iraq to limiting lobbyists, Obama has made some progress. But the president has faced political reality and accepted - sometimes grudgingly - compromises that leave him exposed to criticism. Promises that have proven difficult include pledges not to raise taxes, to curb earmarks and to shut down the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba by the end of his first year. "We are moving systematically to bring about change, but change is hard," Obama told a town hall crowd in California. "Change ...

Bethlehem - Ma'an - The editor in chief of Ma'an English, Jared Malsin, was temporarily spared deportation after an Israeli judge in Tel Aviv reversed an overruled injunction filed by lawyers representing the Bethlehem-based news agency late Wednesday night. Malsin was detained at Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport on Tuesday afternoon while returning from the Czech Republic on holiday. After eight hours of interrogation, the Israeli Interior Ministry ordered him held and scheduled deportation for 6am on Thursday. Ma'an attorney Castro Daoud intervened amid pressure from US diplomats seeking an injunction against the deportation. The request was rejected by the ...

WASHINGTON More U.S. forces are getting under way as the military ramps up its mission to help earthquake victims in Haiti. An advance group of a little over 100 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division will leave Fort Bragg in North Carolina Thursday. The Army says the group will find locations to set up tents and other essentials in preparation for the arrival of another several hundred from the division on Friday. The soldiers come on top of some 2,200 Marines also on their way as the military prepares to help with security, search and rescue and the delivery of humanitarian supplies. More than a half dozen U.S. military ships also are expected to help, with the largest, the ...
5 Drinking Stories That Put Yours To Shame Post Date: 2010-01-14 08:26:22 by Biff Tannen

Turns out, the best drinking stories in history are actually, well, historical. So raise a glass to your forefathers and marvel at these tales. 1. Admiral Edward Russells 17th-Century Throwdown Think you can drink like a sailor? Maybe you should take a moment to reflect on what that truly means. The record for historys largest cocktail belongs to British Lord Admiral Edward Russell. In 1694, he threw an officers party that employed a gardens fountain as the punch bowl. The concoction? A mixture that included 250 gallons of brandy, 125 gallons of Malaga wine, 1,400 pounds of sugar, 2,500 lemons, 20 gallons of lime juice, and 5 pounds of nutmeg. A series of ...
Obama wants record $708 billion for wars next year Post Date: 2010-01-13 15:03:32 by WhiteSands

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama will ask Congress for an additional $33 billion to fight unpopular wars in Afghanistan and Iraq on top of a record $708 billion for the Defense Department next year, The Associated Press has learned - a request that could be an especially hard sell to some of the administration's Democratic allies. The extra $33 billion in 2010 would mostly go toward the expansion of the war in Afghanistan. Obama ordered an extra 30,000 troops for that war as part of an overhaul of the war strategy late last year. Military officials have suggested that the 2011 request would top $700 billion for the first time, but the precise figure has not been made public. ...

That a U.S. senator must ask a federal agency to share information regarding a proposed and classified international anti-counterfeiting accord the government has already disclosed is alarming. Especially when the info has been given to Hollywood, the recording industry, software makers and even some digital-rights groups. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) is demanding that U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk confirm leaks surrounding the unfinished Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, being negotiated largely between the European Union and United States. Among other things, Wyden wants to know if the deal creates international guidelines that mean consumers lose internet access if they ...

An airline passenger has been forced off a Detroit-bound plane and arrested after shouting 'I want to kill all the Jews'. Miami police said in a statement today that 43-year-old Mansor Mohammad Asad, of Toledo, Ohio, faces several charges including disorderly conduct. Police say the Northwest Airlines flight was taxiing at Miami International Airport yesterday, but was turned around after Asad became abusive. Witnesses told authorities he was loud, disruptive and claimed to be Palestinian. They believed he was sometimes speaking Arabic. The Transportation Security Administration said three of his companions were also taken off the plane and questioned. The flight later took off ...

North Korea, which reportedly has used believers as guinea pigs to test chemical and biological weapons, is the world's worst persecutor of Christians, while Iran, which may be using Christians as scapegoats for internal opposition to its president, is No. 2 on the Open Doors 2010 World Watch List. Iran is among eight nations in the top 10 of the group's ranking of the 50 worst persecutors of Christians in which Shariah, the Islamic religious law, is dominant. A total of 35 nations on the list are under some form of Shariah. "We can classify that as a growing trend," Jerry Dykstra, a spokesman for the ministry that works to serve persecuted Christians around the globe, ...
Concern as China clamps down on rare earth exports Post Date: 2010-01-07 06:12:29 by A K A Stone

Britain and other Western countries risk running out of supplies of certain highly sought-after rare metals that are vital to a host of green technologies, amid growing evidence that China, which has a monopoly on global production, is set to choke off exports of valuable compounds. Failure to secure alternative long-term sources of rare earth elements (REEs) would affect the manufacturing and development of low-carbon technology, which relies on the unique properties of the 17 metals to mass-produce eco-friendly innovations such as wind turbines and low-energy lightbulbs. China, whose mines account for 97 per cent of global supplies, is trying to ensure that all raw REE materials are ...
Battle to save tigers intensifies with only 3,200 left on Earth Post Date: 2010-01-04 15:43:05 by A K A Stone

Efforts to save the tiger from extinction will be stepped up this year after the World Wide Fund for Nature placed the animal at the top its list of the most endangered species. Conservationists say there are just 3,200 tigers left in the world as the future of the species is threatened by poachers, destruction of their habitat and climate change. The world population of tigers has fallen by 95 per cent in the past century. The WWF said it intends to intensify pressure to save the Panthera tigris by classifying it as the most at risk on its roster of 10 critically endangered animals. It hopes to increase patrols and work with politicians to eradicate poaching and thwart illegal trade of ...

It is not just in the US that the govt has over stepped it's bounds and is in danger of being toppled. The unarmed Brits are talking civil war as well. Comments from: www.mysun.co.uk/go/thread...whose_Army_would_tame_it_ 1. As we are going to be a fully fledged member of the EU, if one of the 3 main Parties gets in. Our Military becomes EU property. Which means EU Troops would have the right to storm our streets too. Do you think they will show any compassion to the cause of the people ? 2. I believe this is one of the reasons why the EU is determined to create a European army, so if there is a revolt in the UK they can send in French troops to put it down becauseBritish soldiers may ...

Recombinomics Commentary 02:13 January 2, 2010 The Ivanosky Virology Institute has released sequences at Genbank from trachea (A/Orenburg/IIV2974/2009 ) and lung (A/Bryansk/IIV2971/2009) samples suggesting these are from fatal cases. The trachea sample yielded an HA sequence with D225N, while the lung had D225G. The sequences followed three sequences released yesterday, which were also from Russia lung samples and all three had D225G. It is unclear if these recent release represent an increased detection of these changes, but they are the first receptor binding domain chnages from Russia and now there are five such sequences. Some match the clade in Ukraine, which also had samples with ...

'Hundreds of al-Qaeda militants planning attacks from Yemen'...Yemen Foreign Minister Post Date: 2009-12-29 10:46:37 by A K A Stone

Hundreds of al-Qaeda militants are planning terror attacks from Yemen, the countrys Foreign Minister said today. Abu Bakr al-Qirbi appealed for more help from the international community to help to train and equip counter-terrorist forces. His plea came after an al-Qaeda group based in Yemen claimed responsibility for the failed Christmas Day airliner bomb plot. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, alleged to be behind the attempt to blow up an American-bound aircraft, spent time in Yemen with al-Qaeda and was in the country only days before the failed attack. Dr al-Qirbi said: Of course there are a number of al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen and some of their leaders. We realise this ...

The fanatics, in five groups, are now training at secret terror camps in Yemen. It was there London-educated Umar Abdulmutallab, 23, prepared for his Christmas Day bid to blow up a US jet. The British extremists in Yemen are in their early 20s and from Bradford, Luton and Leytonstone, East London. They are due to return to the UK early in 2010 and will then await internet instructions from al-Qaeda on when to strike. A Scotland Yard source said: "The great fear is Abdulmutallab is the first of many ready to attack planes and kill tens of thousands. "We know there are four or five radicalised British Muslim cells in the Yemen. "They are due back within months when ...

Ron Paul supporters walk through life with blinders on. They believe the Texas congressman is absolutely right on every issue. When it comes to foreign policy, that means almost every other Republican is absolutely wrong. Paul ranks alongside ultra-liberal Dennis Kucinich as having the weakest foreign policy stances in the U.S. House. Tuesday, Paul and Kucinich were two of only 12 House members that voted against imposing new sanctions on Iran. The resolution that would penalize foreign companies from selling oil to Iran passed 412-12. "This will unify the Iranian people against us," Paul incorrectly predicts. The truth is, the Iranian ...

AUSSIE rockers AC/DC could have to cancel a sold-out concert because their big sound poses a danger to rare birds.
Animal rights campaigners are threatening legal action if the veteran band goes ahead with a gig planned for Wels airport in Austria in May.
Hans Uhl of BirdLife said birds nesting in the area at the time would be threatened by anthems such as Highway To Hell and You Shook Me All Night Long.
"The second biggest colony of curlews in Upper Austria and various other ground-nesting birds must not become endangered," Mr Uhl said, The Daily Telegraph ...

Up to 11,000 Pennsylvanians could benefit from low-interest home loans under a $1.2 billion state package announced Tuesday that is meant to stimulate the housing market. ''To kick-start the housing recovery we need to repair the damage of the past few years and again make it possible for qualified homebuyers to get loans,'' Gov. Ed Rendell said in announcing the package. Key elements of the $1.2 billion program include making 11,000 30-year, fixed-rate, low-interest mortgage loans and providing $50 million for approximately 450 home construction loans to encourage building activity and create jobs.

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz will demand between 450 million to 1 billion euros in reparations from Germany on behalf of Jews forced into slave labor during the Holocaust, it emerged on Sunday. Minister Steinitz will reportedly present German government with the demand on behalf of 30,000 Israeli survivors of forced labor in wartime ghettos, during a joint session scheduled to take place in early 2010 in Berlin. Israeli officials estimate that according to a ghetto workers act passed by the German parliament in 2002, all of the 30,000 living forced labor survivors are entitled to a retroactive payment of approximately 15,000 euros each. However, Finance Ministry officials say that ...

An American teenage girl allegedly stabbed a man with an ice pick in a dispute over a parking spot. Caitlen Watkins, 18, of Springfield, Missouri, was yesterday charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. Watkins was a passenger in a vehicle when she confronted a driver on Sunday in a shopping centre car park, according to court documents. Witnesses told police a fight broke out and the other driver was stabbed half a dozen times with a wooden-handled, 5-inch ice pick. The victim, Lonnie Sowersby, told police he had parked his vehicle and was walking toward the store when two people in another car began 'yelling, cussing and gesturing towards him,' the report ...
