Iran's defense minister has announced the launch of a new production line of highly accurate, short range cruise missiles capable of evading radar. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi told state TV Sunday that the cruise missile, called Nasr 1, would be capable of destroying targets up to 3,000 tons in size. The minister said the missile can be launched from the surface but would eventually be modified to be fired from helicopters and submarines. The world is already concerned about Iran's military capabilities, especially the implications of its nuclear program. The US and some of its allies, as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency, say Iran is apparently trying to produce nuclear ...

Iran is building a new rocket launch site with North Korean assistance, Israel Radio quoted IHS Janes as reporting overnight Friday. The new launcher, constructed near an existing rocket base in the Semnan province east of Teheran, is visible in satellite imagery, according to the report. The defense intelligence group said the appearance of the launcher suggests assistance from North Korea, and that it may be intended to launch the Simorgh, a long-range Iranian-made missile unveiled in early February and officially intended to be used as a space-launch vehicle (SLV). SLVs can be converted to be used as long-range ballistic missiles for military purposes. Both the missile and ...
Secret Israeli Report: U.S. Cozying Up To Palestinians Post Date: 2010-03-07 18:50:10 by Brian S

The U.S. administration will not put a lot of effort into the upcoming indirect negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, opting instead to focus on the November Congressional elections, according to an internal Foreign Ministry report that was distributed to Israeli diplomatic missions abroad. The classified report claims that in the preparatory discussions for the Israeli-Palestinian proximity talks the Obama administration adopted positions that are closer to Palestinian demands. "The recent American statements point to the adoption of wording in line, even if partially and cautiously, with Palestinian demands in regard to the framework and structure of negotiations," ...
Iceland: Now Finish the Job (Tells bankers to Phuck-off) Post Date: 2010-03-07 16:25:17 by Nebuchadnezzar

Iceland: Now Finish The Job Iceland's voters took the first step toward the right thing: Ninety-three percent voted against the so-called Icesave bill, according to preliminary results on national broadcaster RUV. Final results will be published today. The next step would be to quash any talk of a "new accord." There is exactly one accord to take: Tell the Netherlands and British to stick it. They decided to step in on their own without the consent of the Iceland population when Iceland's version of the FDIC ran out of money. It was their decision, not the Icelandic people's to do so. Voters rejected the bill because ordinary people, farmers and fishermen, ...

Against Special Relationships Theyre nothing but trouble by Justin Raimondo, March 05, 2010 Here it comes again, the Falklands Question: one of those eternal foreign policy problems that seem to have no logical or just solution. Whats surprising is that the Obama administration is taking the right position, for once, and staying well out of it. This drives our Anglophiles, of whom there are quite a few on the neocon right the Churchill cult and all that absolutely wild, and the Brits, too. Why, when British troops are fighting side by side with Americans in Afghanistan, wont the US stand by the Anglo-American special relationship ...

Okay, I totally stole the title from a National Lampoon article from when I was but a kid. But, anyway, I'm going through my Beatles mp3's with an eye to getting rid of the crap and keeping the gems. I'm an album man, and Abbey Road will survive intact, as will Sgt Pepper, but the rest has to earn its keep. I think Yellow Sub will be okay. The rest better step up or it's going to be deleted. I'm not one to bow to legend, bluesduke be damned. Chime in, you bitches.
Hoping Sanctions Work but Readying Gas Masks Post Date: 2010-03-05 19:16:35 by Brian S

JERUSALEM Preparations for a strike against Irans nuclear program are as evident as ever: the introduction of an attack drone capable of flying hundreds of miles, the frequent open talk of a possible attack, the distribution of new gas masks to the public. The distribution of new gas masks to Israelis is one sign of war preparations amid concern over a nuclear Iran. But lately, the real action in Israel on the Iranian issue has been the parade of top American security officials. The chairman of the joint chiefs, the director of the C.I.A. and the national security adviser have all just been here; the vice president arrives on Monday. Some have described it as a bear ...

March 5 (Bloomberg) -- Striking Greek workers shut down transport and tried to storm parliament as lawmakers passed 4.8 billion euros ($6.5 billion) in budget cuts, including wage reductions, needed to trim the regions biggest budget deficit. Police with riot shields fired tear gas as demonstrators wearing biker helmets and ski masks pelted them with stones outside parliament in Athens where lawmakers approved the measures. Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou told parliament the cuts will show European Union allies and investors that Greece is making good on its deficit pledges. We didnt create this crisis but now we have to pay for it, said Manthos Adamakis, ...

Uganda Rejects Obamas Pro-Homosexual Change AIM Column | By Cliff Kincaid | February 5, 2010 Accuracy in Medias review of coverage of the so-called Kill the Gays bill in Uganda finds that it has been completely one-sided, inaccurate, and distorted beyond belief. Ugandan Christian minister Martin Ssempa has issued a strong rebuttal to President Obama's criticism of his country for considering passage of a law to discourage and punish certain homosexual practices. "Sodomy is neither the change we want nor can believe in," says Ssempa, who runs the Family Policy and Human Rights Center in Uganda. Ssempa, a major player in the ...

A common perception is that under President Barack Obama, America s image has improved, and perhaps its friends have increased. But such claims are unfounded, as the opposite proves to be true. One would expect the charismatic Obama, with his hand extended to Americas friends and foes, to fare better than the confrontational George Bush, with his simplistic views on either with us, or against us and his lumping of nations wholesale in this or that axis of evil. International relations, however, are about interests, not sweet talk. As Bush went out recruiting allies, and making enemies, Obama lost America s friends while failing to win over ...
US Plans 'Dramatic Reductions' In Nuclear Weapons Post Date: 2010-03-01 12:38:57 by Brian S

US President Barack Obama is planning "dramatic reductions" in the country's nuclear arsenal, a senior US administration official has said. This would come as part of a sweeping policy review designed to prevent the spread of atomic weapons, he said. The review "will point to dramatic reductions in the stockpile, while maintaining a strong and reliable deterrent", the official said. He added that it would lead to a greater role for conventional weapons. Mr Obama is to meet his defence secretary, Robert Gates, later on Monday to discuss the new nuclear strategy. Officials say thousands of nuclear weapons could be cut, in many cases by retiring weapons that are ...

By Gadi Dechter Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- With an overtime goal by Sidney Crosby, the Canadian mens hockey team brought home the gold medal -- and a case of Molsons Canadian lager for Canadas Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, paid for by Barack Obama. The U.S. president and Harper made a friendly wager on the gold medal game today that pitted the North American neighbors in the final event of the Vancouver Olympic Games. If the U.S. had defeated the hometown favorites, Harper would have suffered the added ignominy of having to buy Obama a case of Yuengling beer, with headquarters in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, said White House spokesman Nick Shapiro. At his visit to the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP), an AIPAC founded think tank, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak reiterated his calls for Western nations to keep all options open in moving against Iran. But more importantly, he suggested Israel might attack Iran even beyond American objections. I dont think that there is a need to coordinate in this regard, Barak insisted, adding later in the speech that Israel has always felt very proud that we never asked the Americans to come and fight for us. US officials have repeatedly expressed opposition to a unilateral Israeli attack, noting that it would be perceived ...

(02-27) 10:03 PST Ewa Beach, Hawaii (AP) -- A tsunami triggered by the Chilean earthquake raced across the Pacific Ocean on Saturday, threatening Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast as well as hundreds of islands from the bottom of the planet to the top. Sirens blared in Hawaii to alert residents to the impending waves, with authorities asking people living near the water to evacuate. On several South Pacific islands hit by a tsunami last fall, police evacuated tens of thousands of residents from the coast. The first waves in Hawaii are expected to hit shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday (4 p.m. EST; 2100 GMT) and measure roughly 8 feet (2.5 meters) at Hilo. Most Pacific Rim nations however did ...
Identification Of Agents By Dubai Police Embarrasses Mossad Post Date: 2010-02-25 11:52:33 by Brian S

To have a dozen of your agents identified in police tapes after an extrajudicial killing is embarrassing. To have almost 30 operatives left with their covers blown as appears to have happened after Dubai police released fresh details of the Hamas assassination last month might be considered reckless. On the official website of Mossad, Israels spy agency, is the biblical verse from Prophets, 11:14 where no counsel is, the people fall, but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. Unfortunately, so many of its counsellors seem to have been caught on CCTV, wearing wigs and other disguises, that it was as if an early Purim carnival was ...

Private American security guards working for the US military in Afghanistan removed hundreds of handguns and automatic weapons from stores intended for the exclusive use of the Afghan police and used them on drunken shooting rampages that killed two Afghan civilians and injured at least two more. The guards included a former US Marine with a criminal record of assault and battery and a former soldier discharged from the US Army after testing positive for cocaine, Congress heard yesterday. Justin Cannon, Christopher Drotleff and a guard using the name Eric Cartman from the cartoon South Park were employees of a subsidiary of the Blackwater Worldwide group, implicated in a ...

Israel Faces Growing Fallout Over a Hamas Hit Post Date: 2010-02-23 12:50:28 by Brian S

Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010 It's always possible that someone besides Mossad carried out the assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a top Hamas military commander, in a Dubai hotel in January. Israel has refused to comment; on Monday Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman explained the silence by saying there is "no proof" Israel was responsible. But the Dubai police insist they are "99%" certain that Israel's famed intelligence agency did the deed. The Dubai authorities say they caught the 11-member hit team on videotape moments before and after they allegedly smothered Mabhouh with a pillow in his hotel room some reports have it as an injection of a chemical that ...

By Juan Cole21 February, 2010 Juancole.comIt appears that, the International Atomic Energy Agency is at least allowing for the possibility that documents allegedly found on a laptop some years ago --but discounted by the US Central Intelligence Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency as of dubious provenance and incompatible with other intelligence gathered in Iran -- point to a nuclear weapons program that no one has been able to locate. Some close observers have concluded that the laptop documents are forgeries. A new IAEA report that declines to dismiss the alleged documents will certainly cause the war lobby in the United States to redouble its efforts to get up an attack on ...
