Sources: Obama Administration to Support Anti-Israel Resolution at UN Next Week BY William Kristol June 11, 2010 10:41 AM ShareThis THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned that senior Obama administration officials have been telling foreign governments that the administration intends to support an effort next week at the United Nations to set up an independent commission, under UN auspices, to investigate Israel's behavior in the Gaza flotilla incident. The White House has apparently shrugged off concerns from elsewhere in the U.S. government that a) this is an extraordinary singling out of Israel, since all kinds of much worse incidents happen around the world without spurring UN ...

Sources close to the American administration told Haaretz on Thursday that the U.S. viewed Turkey's vote against United Nations Iran sanctions as a slap in the face, in light of the efforts put forth by U.S. President Barack Obama's administration to enlist global support for the sanctions. Israel and the United States on Wednesday hailed a UN Security Council vote to impose a fourth round of sanctions on a defiant Iran, which immediately vowed to continue with its nuclear program. Turkey and Brazil were the only votes against the sanctions, while Lebanon abstained. The 15-nation council passed a resolution that was the product of five months of talks between the United States, ...

The Russian Foreign Ministry warned on Wednesday of retaliatory measures if new sanctions against Iran affected Russian companies or individuals. The United Nations Security Council approved on Wednesday a new package of economic sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program. "We cannot possibly ignore signals reaching us about the intention of some of our partners...to start considering additional, tougher restrictive measures against Iran than those provided for under the UN Security Council resolution," the ministry said in a statement. The ministry said it was especially concerned by the prospect of "extraterritorial sanctions" - sanctions imposed on companies ...

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- A 16-year-old California girl who is attempting to sail solo around the world triggered a distress signal during rough seas in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, her family said. Abby Sunderland's family began scrambling to persuade any government with an aircraft in the area to help find the teenage sailor, family spokesman Christian Pinkston said. Sunderland's small sailboat was last located "in the middle of nowhere," about 2,000 miles east of Madagascar and 2,000 miles west of Australia, Pinkston said. The Australian coast guard and the Reunion Island government -- a French island that is the closest land to her last position -- are ...

Obama Less Successful Than Unilateralist Bush Was in Pushing U.N. Security Council to Sanction Iran Thursday, June 10, 2010 By Patrick Goodenough, International Editor CNSNews.com) The Obama administration is playing down the absence of U.N. Security Council unanimity in adopting new sanctions against Iran on Wednesday, attributing three members refusal to back the resolution to differences over timing and tactics. Turkey and Brazil voted against resolution 1929, while Lebanon abstained. For all its supposed unilateralism and unpopularity at the U.N., the Bush administration was twice able to pull off what the current administration has not ...

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) Pointing their rifles, Mexican security forces chased away U.S. authorities investigating the shooting of a 15-year-old Mexican by a U.S. Border Patrol agent on the banks of the Rio Grande, the FBI and witnesses told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The killing of the Mexican by U.S. authorities the second in less than two weeks has exposed the distrust between the two countries that lies just below the surface, and has enraged Mexicans who see the death of the boy on Mexican soil as an act of murder. Shortly after the boy was shot, Mexican soldiers arrived at the scene and pointed their guns at the Border Patrol agents across the ...

The huge full moon setting in the high Chilean desert dominates a spectacular new photo caught in Chile just as astronomers closed up their observatory after a long, busy night.
The photo, released Monday, shows a dazzling full moon as it sets behind the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile's Atacama Desert while dawn approaches, coloring the sky with deep hues of blue and purple. The moon was last full on May 27 and appears larger than normal in the photograph, but it is actually an optical illusion.
"Contrary to what one may think, this picture is no montage," wrote officials with the European Southern Observatory (ESO), which ...

PARIS Short people are 50 percent likelier than tall people to die prematurely of heart disease, researchers reported Wednesday in a major review of three million people. The study showed that women under 1.53 metres (5 feet) and men under 1.65m (5 ft 5 in) are significantly more prone to cardiovascular or coronary heart problems than women and men taller than 1.66 (5 ft 6 in) and 1.73 metres (5 ft 8 in), respectively. The findings, published in the European Heart Journal, suggest that short stature should be added to the list of known heart disease risk factors alongside obesity, advanced age and high cholesterol levels, the researchers said. The link between height and heart ...
Saudi Clerics Advocate Adult Breast-Feeding Post Date: 2010-06-09 19:41:38 by A K A Stone

(June 5) -- Women in Saudi Arabia should give their breast milk to male colleagues and acquaintances in order to avoid breaking strict Islamic law forbidding mixing between the sexes, two powerful Saudi clerics have said. They are at odds, however, over precisely how the milk should be conveyed. A fatwa issued recently about adult breast-feeding to establish "maternal relations" and preclude the possibility of sexual contact has resulted in a week's worth of newspaper headlines in Saudi Arabia. Some have found the debate so bizarre that they're calling for stricter regulations about how and when fatwas should be issued. Sheikh Al Obeikan, an adviser to the royal court ...

U.S. Leans Toward Selling Iraq F-16s Post Date: 2010-06-08 19:26:24 by Brian S

BAGHDAD, June 8 (UPI) -- As the U.S. military withdrawal from Iraq moves toward its final phase and Iran remains defiant over its nuclear program, U.S. officials say the Pentagon, after many months of hesitation, is expected to sell Baghdad late-model F-16 strike aircraft. Such firepower would transform postwar Iraq's emerging armed forces, which are having to take over responsibility for security in violence-battered Iraq as the Americans pull out. It would also cause some concern in Iraq's neighbors, particularly Kuwait and Saudi Arabia whose memories of the 1990-91 Persian Gulf conflict are still bitterly sharp, and in Iran, which seeks to dominate its former enemy. U. S. Army ...

Forty-three years ago today, a U.S. Navy ship was patrolling international waters just north of the Sinai Peninsula. Tensions in the region had been brewing for decades over border conflicts; just days earlier Israel had launched a preemptive strike on Egypt, which they believed was teaming up with Syria and Jordan to plan an attack of its own. The USS Liberty was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Caught in the midst of the conflictdubbed the Six Day Warthe technical research ship was just miles away from Egypt's Gaza Strip when it was bombed with rockets and napalm from Israeli aircraft. Ensuing attempts to radio for assistance were intercepted by the Israelis; yet ...

"We understand that the international participation in investigating these matters will be important to the credibility everybody wants to see," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said. "We recognize that international participation... would be an essential element to putting this tragedy behind us and then hopefully creating some additional trust."

ISTANBULRussia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Tuesday his country would raise the issue of an investigation into the Israeli boarding of an aid ship off Gaza at the United Nations, calling the Israeli action "a crude violation of international law." Speaking at security summit of Eurasian leaders in Istanbul, Mr. Putin also said that U.N. Security Council sanctions against Iran over its nuclear-fuel program were "practically agreed upon." Turkey was seeking to have leaders at the summit condemn Israel over the raid in a joint statement Tuesday, but with Israel attending in the form of its ambassador to Ankara and wielding a veto, that appeared unlikely. ...

In remarks at the gathering of regional leaders, the third of its kind dedicated to increasing cooperation and security in Asia, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran said a nuclear agreement brokered by Turkey and Brazil last month was a one-time opportunity and other countries had called to express their support for it. On a crisp, sunny morning last week, a man strolled into a Brussels courtroom, pulled out a gun, and shot both the judge and a court clerk in the head with a 7.65 mm pistol before fleeing. The double killing stunned the country, which prides itself on its cozy, tranquil way of life. Bewildered judges and lawyers described the incident as "disgusting", "unacceptable" and "an assassination of justice itself." Government ministers pledged to step up security around the law courts, while the Belgian media echoed the outrage. "An attack on a judge is an attack on all of us," said the daily newspaper, De Morgan. The local Brussels police arrested the ...

Children as young as 8 in poor Mexican border cities yearn to grow up to be drug lords and hitmen as the adrenalin and wealth linked to the trafficking world seeps deep into their lives. Parents in the violent cities of Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana on the U.S. border say primary school kids are captivated by the drug gangs they see on the street and TV news brandishing guns, driving flashy black SUVs and outsmarting soldiers. Rather than playing cops and robbers and admiring firemen or train drivers, children are inventing kidnapping games and forming playground gangs named after brutal drug cartels as they idolize the power of kingpins whose turf wars have killed some 23,000 people since ...
