TORONTO — The McGuinty Liberal government secretly passed a law giving police sweeping new powers for the duration of the G8 and G20 summits. The law gives police the power to jail anyone who refuses to furnish identification and submit to a search while within five metres of a designated security zone in downtown Toronto. The Canadian Civil Liberties Association said it was “extremely concerned” about the measures which, according to the group, violate constitutional safeguards. In a statement, the group said it intends to challenge the law. On Thursday, a 32-year-old man was arrested in downtown Toronto for failing to show police ID. Until his arrest, the new law was not ...

Last weekend, Colombian voters delivered a landslide victory to conservative presidential candidate Juan Manuel Santos, who clobbered former Bogotá mayor Antanas Mockus by nearly 42 percentage points. Always eager to meddle in foreign elections, Chávez had strongly criticized Santos during the campaign, calling him a “threat to the region” and warning that “he could cause a war in this part of the world, upon instructions from the Yankees.” On April ...

"Shall the state representative from this district be instructed to vote in favor of a nonbinding resolution calling on the federal government to support the right of all people, including to non-Jewish Palestinian citizens of Israel, to live free from laws that give more rights to one people of one religion than another?" says the ballot question proposed in at least four localities by a group called Mass. Residents for International Human Rights, the Associated Press reported this week. Two localities approved the ballot questions last ...

The 1,500 members of the Swedish Port Workers voted earlier this month to approve the boycott in protest of Israel's interception last month of a Gaza-bound flotilla in which nine activists were killed, as well as to protest Israel's blockade of Gaza. Eleven Swedish citizens were aboard the flotilla. On the first day of the boycott, dockworkers refused to handle about a dozen cargo containers at a southwestern port. Israel ships fruit, vegetables, spices and skin care products to Sweden. ...

ISLAMABAD (AP) -- Defying a warning from Washington, Pakistan's prime minister promised Tuesday to go ahead with a plan to import natural gas from Iran even if the U.S. levies additional sanctions against the Mideast country. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's comments came two days after the U.S. special envoy to Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, cautioned Pakistan not to "overcommit" itself to the deal because it could run afoul of new sanctions against Iran being finalized by Congress. The deal has been a constant source of tension between the two countries, with Pakistan arguing that it is vital to its ability to cope with an energy crisis and the U.S. stressing that it ...

He said the U.S. Export-Import Bank already has signed a letter of intent in that regard with Brazilian state oil company Petrobras. The loan is equal in value to a similar credit line agreed to with the China Development Bank, also for exploiting Brazil’s ...

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 11 (Reuters) - Brazil could benefit from the BP Gulf of Mexico spill as a U.S. moratorium on offshore drilling boosts available rigs for the country's deep water oil exploration program. Even as an ecological catastrophe makes the future of U.S. offshore drilling less certain, Brazil is plowing ahead with a $220 billion five-year plan to tap oil fields even deeper than BP's (BP.L) ill-fated Gulf well, which is still leaking crude. With an estimated 35 rigs idled in the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil is already receiving inquiries from companies looking to move their rigs here, where vast discoveries in recent years may soon turn the country into a major crude ...
