UK Catholic child protection agency criticises Vatican

The head of child protection for the Catholic church in England and Wales has said the Vatican should remove the statute of limitations on prosecution of of priests for child abuse offences. William Kilgallon, the chair of the National Catholic Safeguarding Commission (NCSC), argued that the time limit was unhelpful and failed to reflect the long-lasting effects of abuse. He described the Vatican's recent decision to double the time period from 10 years to to 20 as "better than it was", but said he would have preferred its abolition. He was speaking at the launch of the NCSC's annual report, which highlighted developments in the protection of children and vulnerable ...

Obama, Reagan and the economy

It’s easy to understand why President Barack Obama’s friends don’t want to acknowledge that July represents 17 months since Congress passed the $787 billion economic stimulus bill — the president’s signature measure to jump-start the economy and fight unemployment. Obama says the economy is headed in the right direction; jobs are being created, not lost, and he is doing everything possible to revive the “worst economy since the Great Depression.” Most of the national press has been remarkably accepting of this narrative — even if the president has been vague, at best, about when we might finally see an uptick in economic growth and job creation. ...

Former Nazi Guard, 88, Charged in Mass Murder of 430,000 Jews

BERLIN — German prosecutors have charged an 88-year-old former Nazi guard with aiding in the murders of 430,000 Jews at the Belzec death camp during World War II, and with shooting 10 people himself during his time there. The former guard, Samuel Kunz, No. 3 on the list of most wanted Nazi war criminals published by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, was indicted earlier this month for crimes committed between January 1942 and July 1943, Christoph Göke, a prosecutor in Dortmund, said Wednesday. In a case with echoes of the trial under way in Munich of John Demjanjuk, Mr. Kunz, an ethnic German who served in the Soviet Red Army, was captured by the German Army and given a choice of ...

Leaked US files burnish bin Laden mystique
Post Date: 2010-07-29 00:48:48 by Brian S

US intelligence files published by WikiLeaks feature a series linking Osama bin Laden to suicide bombings in Afghanistan, a plot to assassinate President Hamid Karzai and financial dealings with North Korea. Sensational as the claims may be, a lack of corroboration and opaque sourcing suggest the raw reports will do more to burnish the al-Qaeda leader’s mystique than help reveal his whereabouts. If true, the insights would challenge a widely held view that the Saudi dissident has been forced to relinquish operational command and serve more as an icon for aspiring jihadis since masterminding 9/11. What can be said with more certainty is that Mr bin Laden’s flight from a ...

Explosion Rocks Japanese Supertanker In Persian Gulf

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — An explosion damaged a Japanese oil tanker Wednesday as it steered through the tense waters at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, where the ship's owner said the vessel possibly came under attack. Authorities on both sides of the narrow Strait of Hormuz dismissed suggestions of a deliberate strike, however, pointing instead to natural causes. The U.S. naval fleet that patrols the region said the cause of the blast remains unclear. If the tanker was attacked, it would be a rare assault on a merchant ship in the Gulf or at the Strait of Hormuz, a transit point for about 40 percent of oil shipped by tankers worldwide. Al-Qaida has in the past carried out ...

White House backed release of Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi * Jason Allardyce and Tony Allen-Mills * From: The Australian * July 26, 2010 12:00AM THE US government secretly advised Scottish ministers it would be "far preferable" to free the Lockerbie bomber than jail him in Libya. Correspondence obtained by The Sunday Times reveals the Obama administration considered compassionate release more palatable than locking up Abdel Baset al-Megrahi in a Libyan prison. The intervention, which has angered US relatives of those who died in the attack, was made by Richard LeBaron, deputy head of the US embassy in London, a week before Megrahi was freed in August last year on ...

Oliver Stone Apologizes For Saying Jews Control The Media

Less than 24 hours after saying that the Jews control Washington's foreign policy and the media, and that Hitler's actions should be "put into context," Hollywood director Oliver Stone issued an apology on Monday, saying he "made a clumsy association about the Holocaust." Stone had told British publication The Sunday Times that U.S. public opinion was focused on the Holocaust as a result of the "Jewish domination of the media." The remarks sparked a massive backlash, with a large number of Jewish organizations and Israeli officials publicly condemning the director's comments. In a statement released Monday, Stone said that, "In trying to ...

British PM Cameron: Gaza Must Not Remain A Prison Camp

British prime minister David Cameron, who has often described himself as a "friend of Israel," harshly criticized Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, telling a group of Turkish businessmen in Ankara that the strip was "a prison camp." "The situation in Gaza has to change," he said. "Humanitarian goods and people must flow in both directions. Gaza cannot and must not be allowed to remain a prison camp." While Cameron has made similar remarks in the past, in the House of Commons, the prime minister's decision to repeat them in Turkey - whose relations with Israel have severely deteriorated recently - gave them a more prominent ...

Russia Opposes Additional Sanctions On Iran

MOSCOW, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Russia opposed additional sanctions levied on Iran by the European Union (EU) and the United States, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday. "We categorically reject all attempts to project internal laws of the European Union and the United States on third countries, or to apply sanctions against companies and individuals of states, which conscientiously fulfill the UN Security Council's resolutions," said ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko as quoted by Interfax news agency. EU foreign ministers on Monday endorsed tougher sanctions on Iran's nuclear program, including measures to block oil and gas investment and curtail its refining and natural ...

TEHRAN, July 25 (Xinhua) -- An Iranian Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) commander said Sunday that the country is now capable of producing "an endless number of ballistic missiles," the local satellite Press TV reported. "Our production lines (of ballistic missiles) are running very smoothly," IRGC's Deputy Commander Brigadier General Hossein Salami was quoted as saying. Salami said that Iran has also made enormous progress in the field of air defense, according to the report. Last September, the Islamic Republic displayed its first homemade ballistic missile in a military parade. The ballistic missile of Sejil 2 has the far-reaching range of 2,000 km. Iran ...

A powerful Afghan insurgent leader and a man identified as Osama Bin Laden's financial adviser purchased ground-to-air missiles from North Korea in 2005, according to an uncorroborated U.S. intelligence report released by Wikileaks on Sunday. "On 19 November 2005, Hezb-Islami party leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar [sic] and Dr. Amin [no last name], Osama Bin Ladin's financial advisor, both flew to North Korea departing from Iran," the undated report said. BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) -- All seven people aboard an Israeli military helicopter - one Romanian and six Israelis - were killed when it crashed into a mountain in central Romania, officials said Tuesday. The helicopter, a Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion, crashed Monday during a military exercise in which crews are trained to fly at low altitudes. The joint exercises, which were due to end Thursday, were suspended after the crash. Romanian search teams and Israeli representatives arrived at the crash site in a remote, mountainous area on Tuesday morning. The Israeli military said Romanian officials had found seven bodies near the crash site. According to protocol, the military cannot formally ...

War Crime? Hit List Draws Fire In Wake Of Leaked US Docs

Military's hit list of enemy militants: Reality of Afghanistan conflict or war crime? When it comes to war, killing the enemy is an accepted fact. Even amid the sensation of the WikiLeaks.org revelations, that stark reality lies at the core of new charges that some American military commando operations may have amounted to war crimes. Among the thousands of pages of classified U.S. documents released Sunday by the whistle-blower website are nearly 200 incidents that involve Task Force 373, an elite military special operations unit tasked with hunting down and killing enemy combatants in Afghanistan. Denouncing suggestions that U.S. troops are engaged in war crimes in Afghanistan, ...

A Leading Rabbi Of The Settler Movement Arrested For Writing A Book That Says Jewish Law Allows The Killing Of Non-Jews

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- A leading rabbi of the settler movement was arrested for writing a book that says Jewish law allows the killing of non-Jews. Rabbi Yitzhak Shapira of the Yitzhar settlement was arrested Monday on suspicion of incitement for his book "The King's Torah," which was published last year and garnered headlines then for its controversial content. Police also confiscated 35 copies of the book found in his home. The book is sold in bookstores. Shapira, who heads the Od Yosef Chai Yeshiva in Yitzhar, was released on bail hours after his arrest. Israeli police reportedly began investigating the book after an ad appeared for it last year. Shapira wrote in his book ...

Obama Administration Will Allow The PLO Office In Washington To Fly The Palestinian Flag And Assume The Title Of "Delegation"

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The Obama administration will allow the PLO office in Washington to fly the Palestinian flag and assume the title of "delegation." The change in status comes with no enhancement in diplomatic status, U.S. officials said. The new privileges for the Palestine Liberation Organization office do not mean the representation has "any diplomatic privileges or immunities," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said last Friday. "At the request of the PLO representative, which we have granted given the improvement in the relations between the United States and Palestinians, they have requested permission to fly the Palestinian flag," he said. ...

Leaked U.S. Documents: Pakistan Government Aiding Taliban, Afghan Insurgency

Turns out “Collateral Murder” was just a warm-up. WikiLeaks just published a trove of over 90,000 mostly-classified U.S. military documents that details a strengthening Afghan insurgency with deep ties to Pakistani intelligence. WikiLeaks’ release of a 2007 Apache gunship video sparked worldwide outrage, but little change in U.S. policy. This massive storehouse – taken, it would appear, from U.S. Central Command’s CIDNE data warehouse — has the potential to be strategically significant, raising questions about how and why America and her allies are conducting the war. Not only does it recount 144 incidents in which coalition forces killed civilians over six ...

A Russian Milestone: 1st Black Elected To Office

NOVOZAVIDOVO, Russia (AP) -- People in this Russian town used to stare at Jean Gregoire Sagbo because they had never seen a black man. Now they say they see in him something equally rare - an honest politician. Sagbo last month became the first black to be elected to office in Russia. In a country where racism is entrenched and often violent, Sagbo's election as one of Novozavidovo's 10 municipal councilors is a milestone. But among the town's 10,000 people, the 48-year-old from the West African country of Benin is viewed simply a Russian who cares about his hometown. He promises to revive the impoverished, garbage-strewn town where he has lived for 21 years and raised a ...

Ex-CIA Chief: Strike On Iran Seems More Likely now

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A former CIA director says military action against Iran now seems more likely because no matter what the U.S. does diplomatically, Tehran keeps pushing ahead with its suspected nuclear program. Michael Hayden, a CIA chief under President George W. Bush, says that during his tenure a strike was "way down the list" of options. But he tells CNN's "State of the Union" that such action now "seems inexorable." He predicts Iran will build its program to the point where it's just below having an actual weapon. Hayden says that would be as destabilizing to the region as the real thing. U.S. officials have said military action remains an ...

First things first: it is extremely inconvenient, even embarrassing, that Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi is still alive nearly a year after he was released from Greenock Prison on the grounds that he was believed to have not much more, and perhaps fewer, than three months to live. Nevertheless, the fact that he has lived longer than expected does not advance or give any greater credence to the notion that there was some conspiracy designed to free him come what may and regardless of any other considerations. Nor is there any evidence, despite recent press reports, that BP (everyone's favourite whipping boy now) played any role in Kenny MacAskill's decision to send him back to Libya. One ...

Russia's Putin Sings With Expelled Agents Expelled From US, Promises Them `Bright' Future

Vladimir Putin says he met with the Russian spies who were expelled from the United States, joining them in singing an unofficial KGB anthem and promising them good jobs and a bright future back in their homeland. Russia's prime minister said late Saturday he recently got together with the 10 sleeper agents, without saying when or where. The agents were deported from the U.S. earlier this month in a biggest spy scandal since the Cold War. "We talked about life," Putin told reporters in Ukraine. "We sang 'What Motherland Begins With' and other songs of that character." "What Motherland Begins With" is a song from the 1968 television series about ...
