President Obama's popularity in the US has declined sharply this year and he's always been unpopular in Israel. But his numbers have plunged the most in countries that had high hopes for change in the Middle East. President Barack Obama, who promised "a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world" in a landmark speech in Cairo a little over a year ago, now finds his and America's image in the Middle East right where it's been for decades: mired in distrust. Overwhelmingly people in the Middle East reported frustrated perceptions that the US and President Obama exhibit favoritism toward Israel. It is widely believed that the ...

A new poll of Arab opinion finds that for the first time a majority of the public across the region including a sizable minority in Saudi Arabia believes a nuclear-armed Iran would be a positive development in the Middle East. The portion of the Arab population thinking that way has doubled since a similar survey a year ago, in part because of huge majorities this year in Egypt and Morocco. Egypt, which makes up a quarter of the Arab world, was not in last years survey. The findings, however, say less about a change in Arab opinions of Iran than they do about a change in opinions about another country, say the organizers of the 2010 Arab Public Opinion Poll: Arabs have ...

Ron Paul sent out the following email today: Dear Supporter, Connecticuts Republican primary is on August 10, right around the corner, and I wanted to make sure you knew about two great candidates that that I have endorsed. Neither guy is a favorite of the Party machine, but both have worked very hard and have a deep commitment to Liberty. My friend and former advisor Peter Schiff is campaigning hard for United States Senate. He has raised millions of dollars and is well positioned to shock people on Election Day. In fact, there is a money bomb going on today at www.SchiffforSenate.com. Peter has pledged to match the donations that come in today from his own wallet, so please ...

"I can assure you that we will keep publishing documents that's what we do," a WikiLeaks spokesman, who says he goes by the name Daniel Schmitt in order to protect his identity, told The Associated Press in an interview Saturday. Concerns about securing oil tanker traffic are under discussion once again after an investigation into an explosion that damaged a Japanese supertanker last week in the Persian Gulf concluded that the tanker was the target of an unsuccessful terrorist attack. The explosion that forced the tanker M. Star to return to the United Arab Emirates with its load of oil last week sparked international concern, with divers from the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet assisting Emirati investigators. While the ship's owner, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, initially said it suspected an attack, others said it was hit by a large wave or was involved in a collision with another vessel. Sacrifice is something that many Americans are becoming all too familiar with during this economic downturn. It was a key theme in President Obama's inaugural address to the nation, and he's referenced it numerous times when lecturing the country on how to get back on its feet. But while most of the country is pinching pennies and downsizing summer sojourns - or forgoing them altogether - the Obamas don't seem to be heeding their own advice. While many of us are struggling, the First Lady is spending the next few days in a five-star hotel on the chic Costa del Sol in southern Spain with 40 of her "closest friends." According to CNN, the group is expected to occupy 60 ...

HIROSHIMA, Japan - The site of the world's worst atomic bomb attack echoed with choirs of schoolchildren and the solemn ringing of bells Friday as Hiroshima marked its biggest memorial yet and the first to be attended by the U.S. and other major nuclear powers. Washington's decision to send U.S. Ambassador John Roos to the 65th anniversary of the bombing was seen by many as potentially paving the way for President Barack Obama to visit Hiroshima which would be unprecedented for a sitting U.S. leader. Along with the U.S., Britain and France also made their first official appearance at the memorial, as well as U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Altogether, 74 nations were ...

Hours after a federal judge in Phoenix knocked down key portions of Senate Bill 1070, more than 300 residents who opposed the law gathered to voice relief, shed tears and offer prayers. Some of the church members had been at the grounds nearly every day in protest since Gov. Jan Brewer signed the bill in late April. China has defended its business ties with Iran after a United States official urged Beijing to fully implement sanctions against Tehran. China Thursday rejected concerns about its dealings with Iran. China's state media quoted a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman saying trade with Tehran is normal business and does not harm the interests of other countries or the international community. She was responding to comments made by the United States' special advisor for nonproliferation and arms control, Robert Einhorn. This week Einhorn said China should fully cooperate with United Nations sanctions imposed against North Korea and Iran because of their nuclear programs. The U.S. and ...

Adding to the political fire directed at Wikileaks after the whistleblower website divulged Afghanistan war secrets, Sen. Charles Schumer on Wednesday said he would add new language to a media shield bill to explicitly prohibit the whistleblower group from federal protections. The New York Democrat said he was drafting new language to ensure the organization reaps no benefit from the bill which aims to enhance legal protections for reporters who refuse to reveal their sources. Neither WikiLeaks, nor its original source for these materials, should be spared in any way from the fullest prosecution possible under the law, the senator said in a written statement. Although ...
Chinese Aircraft-Carrier-Killing Missile Could End US Pacific Dominance Post Date: 2010-08-05 18:09:15 by Brian S

ABOARD THE USS GEORGE WASHINGTON Nothing projects U.S. global air and sea power more vividly than supercarriers. Bristling with fighter jets that can reach deep into even landlocked trouble zones, America's virtually invincible carrier fleet has long enforced its dominance of the high seas. China may soon put an end to that. U.S. naval planners are scrambling to deal with what analysts say is a game-changing weapon being developed by China an unprecedented carrier-killing missile called the Dong Feng 21D that could be launched from land with enough accuracy to penetrate the defenses of even the most advanced moving aircraft carrier at a distance of more than 1,500 ...

The Obama administration faced an embarrassing diplomatic blunder today after it was forced to pull a warning about racism in Spain - just as the First Lady arrived in the country for a summer holiday. Staff at the U.S. State Department removed the contentious advice to travellers, which included the phrase 'racist prejudices could lead to the arrest of Afro-Americans who travel to Spain,' from its website on Monday. The First Lady landed in the Costa del Sol this morning for a break with her youngest daughter Sasha, nine.
