AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- A Mexican police commander investigating the reported shooting of an American tourist on a border lake was decapitated and his head was found in a suitcase outside a Mexican Army base, a Texas sheriff said Tuesday. Ruben Rios, a spokesman for the Tamaulipas state prosecutor's office, said Rolando Flores, the commander of state investigators in Ciudad Miguel Aleman who was part of a group investigating the reported shooting of David Hartley, was slain. Rios said authorities "don't know how or why he was killed. We don't have any details on how he died." But Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez told The Associated Press later Tuesday that ...

SAN JOSE MINE, Chile (AP) -- Florencio Avalos, the first of 33 miners to be rescued, has surfaced after 69 days underground. He stepped out of a rescue capsule amid sobs from his young son and received a bracing bear hug from Chilean President Sebastian Pinera. Avalos smiled widely as he hugged rescuers, then Pinera, as his wife, two sons and father looked on. His 7-year-old son Bairo sobbed, as did Chile's first lady, Cecilia Morel. Then Avalos was escorted into a medical triage center for the first of a battery of tests. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. Hurricane Paula sets a rapid intensification record

Hurricane warnings are flying along the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula for Hurricane Paula, the 16th named storm and 9th hurricane of this very active 2010 Atlantic hurricane season. Paula intensified remarkably quickly, setting a modern record for the fastest intensification from the issuance of the first advisory to hurricane strength. The first advisory for Paula was issued at 5pm EDT yesterday, and Paula strengthened into a hurricane just twelve hours later, at 5am EDT this morning. Since reliable record keeping of intensification rates of Atlantic hurricanes began in 1970, when regular satellite coverage became available, no storm has ever intensified into a hurricane that ...

A driver talks on a mobile phone as he sits in traffic along a main road in central Beijing October 12, 2010. China, which overtook the United States as the world's largest auto market last year, has been a major bright spot for sales as the global industry struggles to recover from a steep downturn. But the market has been slowing since May as Beijing took measures to keep the economy from overheating. Industry observers expect the recent upturn in demand to extend into October and even into the winter months as many people would rush to buy cars, worrying that Beijing may scale back or even scrap its policy incentives in 2011. New Zealand – Where did that warming go?

Think of this as a car crash. NIWA says: “The car’s fine, there’s nothing wrong with it.” Then: “We can’t find the keys (actually we’ve lost the car)”. Later: “We weren’t driving it”. Finally: “The car doesn’t exist”. There’s a litany of excuses. The National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) claims New Zealand has been warming at 0.92°C per 100 years. But when some independent minded chaps in New Zealand graphed the raw NZ data, they found that the thermometers show NZ has only warmed by a statistically non-significant 0.06°C. They asked for answers and got nowhere, until they managed to ...

BUSH WAS RIGHT!! Newly Declassified Iraqi Testimony Shows Why Saddam Had to Be Removed

September 11, 2001, taught us that it is too costly to allow a leader with a history of aggression and stated intent to harm the U.S. to maintain links to terrorist groups and acquire weapons capabilities to act upon that sentiment. Newly declassified documents about the testimony of Tariq Aziz, Saddam Hussein’s deputy prime minister, reminds us why Saddam had to be removed from power. Contradicting Saddam Hussein’s testimony where he claimed he actually wanted an alliance with the U.S. against Iran, Tariq Aziz describes Saddam as an “anti-American” who was “delighted” when al-Qaeda bombed the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998. The documents do not ...

I can truthfully say that I fully expected this. It’s part and parcel of the way out-of-control totalitarian societies operate. It’s amazing how much alike they really are. Perhaps I should let the poor seventh century throwbacks off the hook a little. It’s increasingly apparent that the Revolutionary Guard is calling virtually all the shots. They have garnered so much power to themselves that they form what, for all practical purposes, is a shadow government. They know how to play the game though… they always make sure that there’s a tame Mullah or two around to rubber stamp their activities which is, these days, just about everything. The Revolutionary Guard ...

From England's The Telegraph: Several months ago a huge billboard appeared near Wyoming, Minnesota, with a beaming photo of George W. Bush with the caption “Miss me yet?” The answer to that question is clearly yes, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research poll, which shows the former president staging a remarkable political recovery despite having largely disappeared from public life since leaving office: By 47 to 45 percent, Americans say Obama is a better president than George W. Bush. But that two point margin is down from a 23 point advantage one year ago. “Democrats may want to think twice about bringing up former President George W. Bush’s name while ...

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - President Hugo Chavez announced the expropriation of two more companies Sunday, the latest among hundreds of enterprises taken over in the socialist leaders campaign to make Venezuela less capitalistic. He also said Venezuela would take over about 200,000 hectares (494,000 acres) of farm and ranch land after reaching an agreement with the British owner. On his weekly television and radio show, Chavez said the "forced acquisition" of Industrias Venoco CA, a maker of lubricants, would take effect when the decree is published in the Official Gazette. His government had been threatening for two years to take over the company. Chavez complained that ...

Sarkozy slams illegal immigration on Vatican visit

President Nicolas Sarkozy said the fight against illegal immigrants was a "moral imperative" on Friday after talks with Pope Benedict XVI, while a top cardinal urged France to welcome immigrants. "Fighting against illegal immigration, which generates so much distress and drama, which deprives the poorest countries of their vital forces, is a moral imperative," Sarkozy said at a meeting with Vatican clergy during his visit. But senior French cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran earlier on Friday said during a prayer service in St Peter's basilica that "France and its leaders" should reflect on what they could do to "welcome the persecuted and ...

Fr. Sean McDonagh, an expert on ecology and the environment, said on Tuesday that Ireland’s four Catholic archbishops, attending a meeting with Vatican officials this week, should hold the Vatican responsible for the clerical abuse. Speaking to the Irish Independent newspaper this week McDonagh, a co-founder of the Association of Irish Priests, said the Irish delegation who are in Rome this week should join forces with a nine-member international team of investigators to seek the truth from the Vatican. Said McDonagh, "I believe the Irish archbishops and the team of visitors should begin by scrutinizing Rome's own handling of sex abuse allegations.” McDonagh spoke to ...

No right to counsel during interrogation: top court [ Canada ]

Police are winning the unceasing war over the rights of suspected criminals on a major battleground – the Supreme Court of Canada. In a ruling full of friction between a bare majority of judges wanting to avoid hampering officers in their work and a minority fighting for the rights of the accused, the court said on Friday that while suspects have a right to consult a lawyer and to be informed of that right, they don’t have a right to legal counsel while they are being interrogated. The judges focused on the constitutional right to legal counsel, but the bigger picture involved the steady erosion of criminal rights established in the 1980s and early 1990s. Over strenuous ...

Extremist Jews Damage Palestinians' Olive Trees In West Bank As Harvest Begins

Extremist Jews ripped off branches and cut the roots of Palestinian olive trees in the West Bank village of Burin, residents said Saturday, as the yearly harvest of the important crop begins. The attack came at the beginning of the 45-day Palestinian olive harvest. It's traditionally a time of heightened violence, as a minority of extremist Jews tries to provoke Palestinians. Some two dozen men from a nearby Jewish settlement damaged the trees in Burin after they tried to attack Palestinians bulldozing an access road to their fields, said Bilal Eid, who witnessed the incident. "The settlers began cutting the trees, trying to kill the roots. They are trying to scare us," ...

SAN JOSE MINE, Chile (AP) -- A drilling rig punched through to the underground purgatory where 33 miners have been trapped for 66 agonizing days under the Chilean desert, raising cheers, tears and hopes on Saturday. Champagne sprayed and hard hats tumbled off heads as rescue workers pressed close to the drill, hugging each other and shouting for joy. Down in "Camp Hope," where the miners' relatives waited, people waved flags and cried as one man energetically rang a brass bell even before the siren sounded confirming the escape shaft had reached the miners. The men are still several days away from efforts to bring them to the surface: the rescue team wants to eliminate even ...

For the second time this week Cayuga County lost a major court decision in its cigarette tax dispute with the Cayuga Indian Nation. In county court today, Judge Mark H. Fandrich dismissed indictments against the Cayugas and ordered county District Attorney Jon Budelmann to return to the Cayugas some 7,600 cartons of cigarettes and business records seized in a December 2008 tax raid from the nation’s LakeSide Trading store in Union Springs. Fandrich’s ruling follows a related decision by the state Court of Appeals in May. “It’s not up to me to determine if the Court of Appeals is wrong … I don’t have that authority,’’ Fandrich said. According to HHS.gov: While conducting historical research on the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis, Professor Susan Reverby of Wellesley College recently discovered the archived papers of the late Dr. John Cutler, a U.S. Public Health Service medical officer and a Tuskegee investigator. The papers described another unethical study supported by the U.S. government in which highly vulnerable populations in Guatemala were intentionally infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The study, conducted between 1946 and 1948, was done with the knowledge of Dr. Cutler’s superiors and was funded by a grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health to the Pan American Sanitary ...

The US Congressmen have opposed the sale of an American uranium producing plant to a Russian company in what can be described as defying the image of America as a free trade nation and practicing double standards when it comes to their interests. A number of influential members in the US House of Representatives wrote a letter to the US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner saying that selling a uranium mine in Wyoming to a Russian company threatened US national security because the uranium might land in Iran, which has been cooperating with Russia for years. A mere mention of “Iran” sends most Americans into panic. For this reason, the United States resorts to it whenever needed. ...

Guatemala on Wednesday issued a formal request for full disclosure on how US scientists deliberately infected hundreds of people here with sexually transmitted diseases from 1946-1948. "All of the information has been requested officially but it is still at the university where they found the archives," President Alvaro Colom said of the cases of 1,500 Guatemalans who were used unwittingly in testing that some locals have likened to Nazi experiments. In a phone conversation with Colom on Friday, US President Barack Obama expressed his deep regret for the experiment conducted by US public health researchers six decades ago and apologized "to all those affected." Alexander Mashkevitch, born in 1954, heads the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. He is a citizen of Kazakhstan and Israel. The arrests came in late September after a tip to Turkish authorities that the luxury boat was being used for illegal purposes, The Los Angeles Times reported. The Turkish government, which had leased out the yacht, has repossessed it. The yacht once belonged to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey. Turkish authorities say they have documents proving that Mashkevitch paid up front to rent the yacht ...

The first of Chile’s 33 trapped miners may be free by Oct. 10, more than two months after a mine accident stranded the workers, an official aiding the rescue efforts said. The second of three rescue shafts being drilled has reached a depth of 520 meters (1,700 feet) after a drill bit was changed last night, said Eugenio Eguiguren, international vice president of Geotec Boyles Bros., which is drilling the hole. The drill has another 102 meters to go before reaching the miners, who have been trapped since an Aug. 5 cave-in at the mine in northern Chile, he said. Once the drilling rig breaks through 622 meters, which could happen as soon as Oct. 8, rescuers will send down a video camera ...
