Exclusive: In light of new revelations of government malfeasance, Israeli agent's lawyers ask for his immediate release from prison. Talkbacks (96) Jonathan Pollard’s American attorneys, Eliot Lauer and Jacques Semmelman, filed a new petition for clemency on Friday, asking that US President Barack Obama commute Pollard’s life sentence to the 25 years he has already served, The Jerusalem Post has learned. The petition comes amid a wave of calls for the release of the Israeli agent and following new revelations of apparent government malfeasance made public by senior officials with first-hand involvement in the case – former minister Rafi Eitan and former US assistant ...

Despite claims that it had petrol provision “under control”, the government said it had activated an emergency crisis cell charged with maintaining fuel supplies. The opposition Socialists criticised François Fillon, the prime minister, for failing to speak to the unions over proposed pension reforms, which would raise minimum and full retirement ages to 62 and 67. “We have a prime minister who thinks he is Churchill but who is only Thatcher,” said Harlem Désir, the Socialists’ deputy leader. “He is trying to make us think he is carrying out great reforms to save our economy but in fact he is smashing our social model.” The Socialists, ...

Pentagon Asks Media Not To Publish War Leaks

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon on Monday asked media organizations not to publish any classified war files released by the WikiLeaks Web site, as the U.S. braces for the potential disclosure of hundreds of thousands of secret Iraq war documents. In July, WikiLeaks obtained and released nearly 77,000 classified military reports from Afghanistan. Now, the Pentagon says the group has as many as 400,000 documents from a military database on operations in Iraq. WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange on Monday downplayed expectations that a leak was imminent. In a Twitter post, Assange said information were coming from "a single tabloid blog" that had put out a "tremendous ...

Israel Says Hamas Has Anti-Aircraft Missiles

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Gaza's Hamas rulers have obtained anti-aircraft missiles, Israel's prime minister said Monday, in a potentially game-changing development that could threaten the Israeli air force's ability to strike at the Islamic militant group. Israeli aircraft have long dominated the skies over Gaza, striking suspected Hamas military installations and assassinating dozens of wanted militants. The Israeli air force played a key role in a fierce three-week offensive in Gaza early last year, which began with airstrikes that killed hundreds of Hamas fighters. Speaking to his Likud Party, Netanyahu disclosed that Israel's aerial freedom has been compromised by the new ...

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri are believed to be hiding close to each other in houses in northwest Pakistan, but are not together, a senior NATO official said. "Nobody in al Qaeda is living in a cave," said the official, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the intelligence matters involved. Rather, al Qaeda's top leadership is believed to be living in relative comfort, protected by locals and some members of the Pakistani intelligence services, the official said. Pakistan has repeatedly denied protecting members of the al Qaeda leadership. The official said the general region where bin Laden is likely to ...

Thousands Demonstrate in Tel Aviv against Racist Loyalty Oath Could the Netanyahu Government Fall over New Settlements?

Several thousand Jews and Arabs marched in Tel Aviv on Saturday to protest the loyalty oath recently approved by the Israeli cabinet, which would force new candidates for Israeli citizenship to affirm their commitment to a “Jewish and Democratic” state. The measure was pushed by Avigdor Lieberman, the far, far rightwing leader of Yisrael Beitenu, the party of relatively recent immigrants to Israel from the former Soviet Union. The oath is considered racist by most Palestinian-Israelis and by many on the Israeli left. For a view that the Netanyahu government that passed the measure is profoundly anti-democratic, see Gershon Gorenberg in The American Prospect. In other news, the ...

FBI warned about Headley, Mumbai attack in 2005

In what looks like another failure in the Bush administration to protect the world’s citizens from terrorism, reports today say the FBI knew that Mumbai would be attacked three years before it happened. David Headley was a paid Drug Enforcement Agent in 2005. Headley was arrested on domestic assault charges that year after his wife was told that Headley had married another woman in Pakistan and fathered children there. His wife complained to FBI officials that Headley bragged about his work with the DEA and his training in Pakistan with terrorist militia. She also told the FBI that Headley had traveled five times to Mumbai. Headley had been scouting locations to carry out a terrorist ...

It’s pretty incredible stuff, more so as hard information coming out of Iran is so fragmented and sketchy. I’m speaking, of course, of the ‘accidental’ explosion at the Imam Ali base, an Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s arms and ammunition depot at a ‘secret’ facility, which had extensive underground storage and launching facilities for the Shahab-3 long-range missile. In fact, practically all of Iran’s inventory of the Shahab-3 was reportedly destroyed when (as the Iranians spun it) a fire got out of control at the base. Other Iranians blamed the Kurds. Kurds?! It must have been one hell of a raid. Just think about it… hundreds of miles through ...

The RCMP major crimes unit on the province’s west coast is investigating reports of criminal behaviour by a Roman Catholic priest. However, no charges have been laid against Father George Smith. The RCMP said the criminal behaviour allegedly occurred years ago, but they did not specify the nature of the alleged crime. “The RCMP are confirming a number of persons report that they were victimized, but will not be releasing any numbers of witnesses or potential victims,” said a news release issued by RCMP Sgt. Boyd Merrill. The investigation began this summer but progress has been slow because the people who need to be interviewed live all over Canada. “This matter ...

Thirteen percent of Germans would welcome the arrival of a new "Fuhrer," a new study suggests in what may be the most striking example yet of the rise of right-wing extremism in Europe today. According to the Christian Science Monitor, more than a third of Germans feel the country is "overrun by foreigners," roughly 60 percent would "restrict the practice of Islam" and 17 percent believe Jews have "too much influence." The Irish Times reports: Researchers said a clear trend was visible: after almost a decade of decline, the survey indicates that views in favour of dictatorship, xenophobia and anti-Semitism are increasing in popularity. “In the ...

'There's no such thing as rape within marriage', says Muslim leader of sharia law courts in Britain

A senior Muslim cleric has been condemned by police and other Muslim leaders for claiming that there is no such thing as rape within marriage. Sheikh Maulana Abu Sayeed, president of the Islamic Sharia Council in Britain, sparked outrage when he said he believed that men who rape their wives should not be prosecuted because 'sex is part of marriage'. He further claimed, during an interview with the blog The Samosa, that many married women who made accusations of rape were lying. His comments have caused fury among senior police officers, who already face great difficulties in getting women to report rape - a crime that all too often goes under-reported. Read this account of the experiments carried out in the 1940s by "scientists" from a "civilized" nation in another country that was under its influence: The initial experiments involve the study of sex workers intentionally infected with Treponema pallidum [photo, left] as the source of infection for male inmates. At that time, the sex workers were admitted into the prisons. When the rate of male-female transmission proved low, the research approach changed to direct inoculation of inmates and patients in the psychiatric hospital. Most of the experiments involved subcutaneous injection of T. pallidum or exposure of the penile foreskin to infectious material. The ...

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia agreed on Friday to build Venezuela's first nuclear power station after talks between Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Hugo Chavez in the Kremlin. Russian nuclear agency chief Sergei Kiriyenko and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro signed a deal on "the construction and use of an atomic power station on the territory of Venezuela," after the talks. Reuters) - Abuse of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay has worsened sharply since President Barack Obama took office as prison guards "get their kicks in" before the camp is closed, according to a lawyer who represents detainees. Abuses began to pick up in December after Obama was elected, human rights lawyer Ahmed Ghappour told Reuters. He cited beatings, the dislocation of limbs, spraying of pepper spray into closed cells, applying pepper spray to toilet paper and over-forcefeeding detainees who are on hunger strike. The Pentagon said on Monday that it had received renewed reports of prisoner abuse during a recent review of conditions at Guantanamo, but had concluded that all ...

AIDS Is a Kind of 'Justice' for Promiscuous Sex, Belgian Catholic Leader Claims

The Catholic Church in Belgium has been battered by scandals and missteps over the past year, and now its new leader, the conservative Archbishop André-Joseph Léonard of Brussels, has sparked a fresh controversy with comments declaring that people afflicted with AIDS are receiving "a sort of immanent justice" for their sexual practices. Léonard, who Pope Benedict XVI appointed this year to replace a much-loved liberal, Cardinal Godfried Danneels, compared the suffering of AIDS victims to human-caused degradation of the environment, for which people themselves then pay the price. "Maybe human love also responds when she is treated badly, without the need ...

* Supply cut at fuel pipeline to Paris * Airport worker strike grounds some flights * Police arrest dozens in student protests By Catherine Bremer PARIS, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Striking French oil refinery workers shut down a fuel pipeline supplying Paris and its airports on Friday and airport workers grounded some flights as protests mounted to derail an unpopular pension reform. France's airport operator played down worries of fuel shortages, but strikes at all of the country's 12 refineries and fuel depot blockades prompted motorists to stock up on petrol. Truck drivers also were set to join the fray as momentum built for a day of street rallies on Saturday. The widening ...

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- North Korean media on Saturday threatened a "1,000-fold" military buildup as the United States ruled out lifting sanctions to try to coax the North into resuming talks aimed at its nuclear weapons programs. Last year, North Korea quit the nuclear disarmament talks and later tested an atomic device that drew tightened U.N. sanctions. But North Korea said Saturday it is willing to rejoin the negotiations and remains committed to implementing a September 2005 accord on abandoning its nuclear program in exchange for aid and security guarantees. Instead, it accused the United States and other participants of holding back the six-nation talks. North Korea ...

The plans for new housing units in the settlement neighbourhoods of Pisgat Zeev and Ramot were approved on Thursday by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Ynet news website said, in a move likely to complicate US efforts to revive peace talks. Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erakat said the move proved Israel was intent on "killing" every opportunity to revive peace talks between the two sides. Russia signed a deal to deliver five battalions of S-300PMU-1 air defense systems to Iran in 2007 but banned the sale in September, saying the systems, along with a number of other weapons, were covered by the fourth round of sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council against Iran over its nuclear program in June. Reported plea deal in Guantanamo case draws fire SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – A plea deal that would reportedly keep a Guantanamo prisoner in custody for eight more years isn't sitting well with a key witness against him: a former Army sergeant who was partially blinded and lost a friend in the firefight that led to the alleged al-Qaida militant's capture. "They ought to lock him up until he's no longer a threat, and if that's for the rest of his life, so be it," Morris said in an interview with The Associated Press a day after Khadr's ...
