US Rejects Israel Call For Military Threat Against Iran
Post Date: 2010-11-08 12:38:18 by Brian S

Secretary Robert Gates on Monday rejected comments by Israel's prime minister calling for a "credible" military threat against Iran to ensure it does not obtain nuclear weapons. "We know that they are concerned about the impact of the sanctions. The sanctions are biting more deeply than they anticipated and we are working very hard at this," Gates told reporters on a visit to Australia for security talks. "So I would disagree that only a credible military threat can get Iran to take the actions it needs to to end its nuclear weapons programme. "We are prepared to do what is necessary but at this point we continue to believe that the political-economic ...

War Crimes: Israeli Government Documents Show Deliberate Policy To Keep Gazans At Near-Starvation Levels

Documents whose existence were denied by the Israeli government for over a year have been released after a legal battle led by Israeli human rights group Gisha. The documents reveal a deliberate policy by the Israeli government in which the dietary needs for the population of Gaza are chillingly calculated, and the amounts of food let in by the Israeli government measured to remain just enough to keep the population alive at a near-starvation level. This documents the statement made by a number of Israeli officials that they are "putting the people of Gaza on a diet". Calculation sheet from newly-released documents (image from Gisha)In 2007, when Israel began its full siege on ...

GOP's Graham Urges ‘Confrontation’ With Iran, China

The United States faces a possible war with Iran to curb its nuclear ambitions and a "period of confrontation" with China over its currency, a top US lawmaker warned Saturday. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said his fellow conservative, fresh from their historic elections romp this week, support "bold" action to deal with Iran. If President Barack Obama "decides to be tough with Iran beyond sanctions, I think he is going to feel a lot of Republican support for the idea that we cannot let Iran develop a nuclear weapon," he told the Halifax International Security Forum. "The last thing America wants is another military conflict, but the last thing the ...

Obama calls India creator, not poacher, of US jobs

MUMBAI, India – Searching for help half a world away, President Barack Obama on Saturday embraced India as the next jobs-creating giant for hurting Americans, not a cheap-labor rival that outsources opportunity from the United States. Fresh off a political trouncing at home, Obama was determined to show tangible, economic results on his long Asia trip, and that was apparent from almost the moment he set foot on a steamy afternoon in the world's largest democracy. By the end of the first of his three days in India, he was promoting $10 billion in trade deals — completed in time for his visit — that the White House says will create about 54,000 jobs at home. That's a ...

China, India, Brazil Become 'Major Players' At IMF

WASHINGTON (AP) — China and India received long-sought recognition Friday as global economic heavyweights as the International Monetary Fund gave them and other emerging powers a significantly larger role in stabilizing the world economy. IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn announced planned reforms to the fund's voting power after a meeting of the organization's board, declaring that no longer would emerging economies feel that they are "invited to the table, but minor players." Brazil, China, India and Russia are now "major players," Strauss-Kahn affirmed at a news conference. He called on these nations to assume greater responsibility in guiding the global ...

Israel Braces For The Iranian Rain Of Fire

The head of Israeli military intelligence warned his political superiors that the next major war Israel encountered would likely result in much higher Israeli casualties, especially to civilians. There is also growing concern about Russia selling advanced anti-aircraft systems to Syria, which could pass them on to Iran. All this could be traced back to preparations Iran has been making for over a decade. Using their oil wealth, and weapons smuggling network, Iran has armed Syria, Hezbollah (the Shia militia in southern Lebanon) and Hamas (the Palestinian terrorist group that runs Gaza) with over 50,000 rockets, plus numerous other weapons. Most of the rockets are short range (about 10 ...

While Forbes magazine still terms President Obama the 'Leader of the Free World,’ the title of most powerful now goes to China's Hu Jintao. Washington Just in case President Obama wasn’t feeling deflated enough by the drubbing he got in Tuesday’s midterm elections, now there’s this: Forbes magazine has decided he’s no longer the world’s most powerful person. That would be Hu Jintao, president of China, the American business magazine declares in its annual “most powerful” global ranking this week. Mr. Obama, whom Forbes grants still holds the unofficial title of “Leader of the Free World,” fell to No. 2 in the power rankings – ...

Daniel Domscheit-Berg, an important member of WikiLeaks who quit in September after disagreements with the site's founder Julian Assange, is reportedly planning to create his own whistleblower site along with other former members of WikiLeaks, Wall Street Journal reports. "There is some indication that Daniel and some others are setting up a similar venue, and we wish them luck," said Kristinn Hrafnsson, a WikiLeaks spokesman. The US Federal Reserve’s decision to pump an extra $600bn into the economy has galvanized emerging market central banks into preparing defensive measures and sparked criticism from leading global economies. The Fed’s initiative, in response to rising concern about the weakness of the US economy, has fuelled fears of a sharp drop in the dollar and a fresh flood of capital inflows into emerging markets. China, Brazil and Germany on Thursday criticised the Fed’s action a day earlier, and a string of east Asian central banks said they were preparing measures to defend their economies against large capital inflows. Guido Mantega, the Brazilian finance minister who was the first ...

Strange: Bush Claims He Was A 'Dissenting Voice' On Iraq

Former President George W. Bush says he was a "dissenting voice" on the decision to invade Iraq because he "didn't want to use force" but ran out of options. "I was a dissenting voice. I didn't want to use force," Bush told NBC's Matt Lauer in his first interview promoting his new memoir, "Decision Points." "I mean force is the last option for a President," he continued, according to an NBC News transcript e-mailed to Raw Story. "And I think it's clear in the book that I gave diplomacy every chance to work. And I will also tell you the world's better off without somehow in power. And so are 25 million Iraqis." ...

Around The World, Concern Over The Global Impact Of U.S. Elections

BEIJING - World capitals on Wednesday braced for a new political order in Washington, as policymakers and analysts tried to assess the impact on foreign policy of a new Republican-led U.S. House, a diminished Democratic majority in the Senate and an American president many fear has been left weakened. The midterm elections were watched particularly closely here in China, which emerged as a villain in campaign ads by candidates railing against American jobs being shipped overseas. Some feared congressional Republicans, more mistrustful of China's intentions, would pressure the Obama administration to take a tougher line with Beijing on such issues as technology exports, cooperation on ...

Israel Delays Strategic Dialogue With Britain, Demands Immunity From Arrest For Leaders

JERUSALEM (AP) - Officials say Israel has suspended a special strategic dialogue with London as long as Israeli officials visiting Britain face possible arrest for suspected war crimes against Palestinians. The two countries announced the dialogue two years ago to boost relations. But Israel put them on hold at the beginning of the year after former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni canceled a trip to London for fear of arrest. A number of Israeli officials have been threatened with possible prosecution in Britain under the law of "universal jurisdiction," which contends that crimes against humanity are so egregious that they can be prosecuted even if they were not committed in the ...

Regardless who comes out ahead in US legislative elections, US peace efforts in the Middle East will remain unaffected, the US State Department said Tuesday, as President Barack Obama's Democrats brace for a drubbing. "Democratic and Republican administrations supported by Congress under Democratic or Republican leadership have all supported our pursuit for comprehensive Middle East peace," department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters. "So this is a significant national interest and I would not expect any electoral results to have an impact on that," he added. Analysts consulted by AFP in Jerusalem have predicted that a weakening of Obama's Democratic ...

Who saved the day in Yemen bomb plot? Once again, a Muslim.

One of the key lessons emerging from the Yemen bomb plot is that, in the shadowy world of tracking militants and winnowing out rumors from the real thing, some of the most vital intelligence comes from countries and individuals in the Muslim world. To be sure, the failure of what US, British, and Yemeni officials say was a plot by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to deliver its bombs is the latest in a long string of militant efforts that have come up short thanks to dramatically improved coordination of international intelligence and security efforts since 9/11. But many of the key pieces of intelligence that set those networks into action came from Muslims – some former ...

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- Haitians have yet another problem - a hurricane may hit this week, adding to the woes of a nation where cholera is spreading in the countryside and thousands upon thousands of earthquake survivors are still living in flimsy shelters. A U.S. Navy vessel, the amphibious warfare ship Iwo Jima, was steaming toward Haiti on Tuesday to be on hand to provide disaster relief in case Tropical Storm Tomas appears late in the week as forecast, possibly after strengthening again into a hurricane. The storm has already caused 14 deaths in the eastern Caribbean. Aid groups are rushing to do what they can but are already short of needed supplies because of the strains of ...

Chihuahua state prosecutors' spokesman Arturo Sandoval said Edgar Lopez, 35, of El Paso, Texas, was killed Sunday along with two Mexican men when gunmen opened fire on a group standing outside a house. On Saturday, a 26-year-old U.S. woman and an American boy were slain shortly after crossing an international bridge from El Paso. Giovanna Herrera and Luis Araiza, 15, were shot to death along with a Mexican man traveling with them just after 11 a.m., Sandoval said. Human rights observers warn that Iran plans to execute a woman whose sentence to stoning has drawn international condemnation. Contacts inside in Iran say authorities in Tehran have given the go-ahead to prison officials in Tabriz to execute Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, possibly as early as Wednesday, though it's not clear yet by what method, Mina Ahadi of the International Committees Against Execution & Stoning told Fox News. The 43-year-old mother of two had been sentenced to stoning for alleged adultery. The Iranian government also claims Ashtiani had a hand in the murder of her husband. Ahadi and her organization are calling on foreign governments to put pressure on Iran to ...

Last week, the British Office of National Statistics (ONS) released data on a variety of different topics pertaining to the United Kingdom, including the most popular baby names in 2009. The ONS statistics reveal that different variations of the name Oliver were the most popular name for English babies during that year, and also that if different spellings are not counted together, that Mohammed was the name most often used by parents to name their children. On Friday’s Real Time With Bill Maher, host Bill Maher referenced the ONS data and asked, “Am I a racist to feel that I’m alarmed by that?” He continued, “I don’t have to apologize, do I, for not wanting ...

Canada has banned all air cargo from Yemen. Transport Minister Chuck Strahl made the announcement Monday. It comes in the wake of last week’s discovery of two U.S.-bound bombs sent in air cargo from Yemen. Strahl said immediate restrictions were put on cargo out of Yemen as soon as the government learned of the bomb plot last Friday. All cargo from Yemen was set aside for secondary screening to ensure it was safe. "I signed off since then on an interim order that will prevent air cargo from transferring from Yemen while we do an analysis of the situation,” Strahl told reporters in Ottawa. "Of course governments around the world are reacting similarly and obviously we ...

Washington (CNN) -- The number of Americans who say things are going badly in the country, at 75 percent, is higher than it has been on the eve of any midterm election since the question was first asked in the mid-1970s, according to a new national poll. A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday also indicates that the economy remains, by far, the top issue on the minds of Americans. Fifty-two percent of people questioned say the economy's the most important issue facing the country. "That's more than the deficit, education, health care, terrorism, energy, illegal immigration and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq combined," says CNN Polling Director ...
