Vatican tried to keep Irish child rapist as priest

DUBLIN (AP) — The Vatican tried to stop Dublin church leaders from defrocking a particularly dangerous pedophile priest and relented only after he raped a boy in a pub restroom, an investigation reported Friday. Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said he fully accepted the findings of the latest chapter in Ireland's investigation into child abuse by Catholic Church figures. Martin called Tony Walsh an "extremely devious man" who should never have been ordained a priest, and said the report highlighted how the church had grown too powerful and arrogant in 20th century Ireland. A state-ordered investigation into Dublin Archdiocese cover-ups reported last year that ...

Hypocrisy: Julian Assange Blasts Media for Publishing Leaks About Him

You just can't make this stuff up. According to the Times of London (subscription required), Julian Assange is angry at the UK Guardian for publishing details of sexual assault allegations against him based on…wait for it…a leaked police report. Stones, glass houses, etc. Assange is especially peeved, the Times reported, that the Guardian "selectively published" details of that report. Gee, you mean that publishing only sensational excerpts of leaked private information might present an incomplete and misleading narrative to the paper's readers that could damage the reputations of those involved? You don't say. Michael Calderone of Yahoo News reported ...

Leaks, Leaked: Norway Publication Claims To Have Complete ‘Cablegate’ Archive

Over the past few weeks, secrets outlet WikiLeaks has released only a small number of the secret US State Department diplomatic cables it was given, choosing instead to work with partners in the mainstream press to fritter out the stories worth telling. Less than 1 percent of the whole 250,000 cable archive has been released, to date. But that may be about to change. An editor with Aftenposten, a news service in Norway, told Dagens Naerings, the country's main business newspaper, that they'd come into possession of the complete archive, according to late-breaking reports Wednesday afternoon. "We're free to do what we want with these documents," Aftenposten editor Ole ...

In Victory For Obama, Senate Ratifies Nuclear Arms Treaty With Russia

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has ratified a new arms control treaty with Russia in a major foreign policy win for President Barack Obama. The vote was 71-26, more than the two-thirds of those present and voting required for approval. The treaty would cap nuclear warheads for both countries and resume onsite inspections that expired a year ago.

Afghan sex practices concern U.S., British forces

A document released by WikiLeaks described efforts by high-ranking Afghan officials to quash reports of police officers and other Afghans arrested for "purchasing a service from a child." The leaked diplomatic cable quoted former Minister of the Interior Hanif Atmar's concern that publicity about the arrests, which involved the hiring of " dancing boys," would "endanger lives." The vast gulf between U.S. and Afghan attitudes about homosexuality and pedophilia has generated concern among U.S. advisers in Afghanistan since the American presence there began to expand. In late 2009, U.S. and British forces ordered a study of Pashtun male sexuality. They were ...

FCC Gives Government Power to Regulate Web Traffic

WASHINGTON—Federal telecommunications regulators approved new rules Tuesday that would for the first time give the federal government formal authority to regulate Internet traffic, although how much or for how long remained unclear. A divided Federal Communications Commission approved a proposal by Chairman Julius Genachowski to give the FCC power to prevent broadband providers from selectively blocking web traffic. The rules will go into effect early next year, but legal challenges or action by Congress could block the FCC's action. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) on Tuesday called the FCC's action "flawed" and said lawmakers would "have an ...

Piers Corbyn not only predicted the current weather, but he believes things are going to get much worse, says Boris Johnson, London's mayor The man who repeatedly beats the Met Office at its own game Well, folks, it's tea-time on Sunday and for anyone involved in keeping people moving it has been a hell of a weekend. Thousands have had their journeys wrecked, tens of thousands have been delayed getting away for Christmas; and for those Londoners who feel aggrieved by the performance of any part of our transport services, I can only say that we are doing our level best. Almost the entire Tube system was running on Sunday and we would have done even better if it had not been for a ...

Mike Lee, Utah's Senator-elect And A Prominent Tea Party Conservative, Met In Israel With Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

December 20, 2010 WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Mike Lee, Utah's senator-elect and among the most prominent of Tea Party conservatives, met in Israel with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Lee, who ousted moderate Republicans in primaries in the recent election, toured Israel last week under the auspices of the American Israel Education Foundation, an affiliate of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. AIPAC and other pro-Israel groups are reaching out to such conservatives in a bid to persuade them not to cut foreign aid. The Tea Party insurgency helped the Republicans sweep the U.S. House of Representatives and cut into the Democrats' majority in the Senate by promising cuts in ...

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Is Asking President Obama For Convicted Spy Jonathan Pollard's Release

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is asking President Obama for convicted spy Jonathan Pollard's release. Netanyahu said Tuesday he would formally ask Obama to set free Pollard, who was sentenced to life in 1987 for spying for Israel. A number of Jewish groups routinely request Pollard's release each December, when presidents consider how to apply their executive privilege to pardon the convicted or commute their sentences. Netanyahu's request could be tied to considerations of peace talks with the Palestinians, which are mired in an impasse over settlement building. The last time Netanyahu sought such a release, during his previous stint as prime ...

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel deprives Palestinian residents of the West Bank of basic necessities while Jewish settlements flourish, according to a new report by Human Rights Watch. The 166-page report, “Separate and Unequal: Israel’s Discriminatory Treatment of Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories,” released Sunday, is based on case studies comparing Israel's treatment of settlements and next-door Palestinian communities in the same areas. The main umbrella settlers' group called the report "Goebbels-like propaganda." The report called on the United States to withhold aid to Israel in an amount equal to what Israel spends on the settlements, ...

NKorea Backs Away From Threat To Attack South

YEONPYEONG ISLAND, South Korea (AP) -- North Korea backed off threats to retaliate against South Korea for military drills Monday and reportedly offered concessions on its nuclear program - signs it was looking to lower the temperature on the Korean peninsula after weeks of soaring tensions. But Pyongyang has feinted toward conciliation before and failed to follow through. The North's gestures came after South Korea launched fighter jets, evacuated hundreds of residents near its tense land border with the North and sent residents of islands near disputed waters into underground bunkers in case Pyongyang followed through on its vow to attack over the drills. "It appears that ...

Russia Warns Senate Not to Amend Arms Control Treaty

WASHINGTON — Russia warned the United States Senate on Monday not to rewrite the new arms control treaty being debated on Capitol Hill as American lawmakers clashed about the politics of ratification in the waning days of the Congressional session. Republican critics of the treaty, known as New Start, offered more amendments to the treaty’s language on verification and launcher limits. But any change to the treaty text would require both countries to return to the negotiating table, and Moscow made it clear that senators had to accept the treaty or reject it as it is, without amendments. “I can only underscore that the strategic nuclear arms treaty, worked out on the ...

That was the headline on this March 2000 story in England's Independent: Britain's winter ends tomorrow with further indications of a striking environmental change: snow is starting to disappear from our lives. Sledges, snowmen, snowballs and the excitement of waking to find that the stuff has settled outside are all a rapidly diminishing part of Britain's culture, as warmer winters - which scientists are attributing to global climate change - produce not only fewer white Christmases, but fewer white Januaries and Februaries. The first two months of 2000 were virtually free of significant snowfall in much of lowland Britain, and December brought only moderate snowfall in ...

YEONPYEONG ISLAND (AFP)--Civilians on five South Korean border islands were ordered Monday to take shelter after Seoul announced it would stage a live-fire drill despite North Korean threats of retaliation. A spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff said the order was issued for all the islands on the Yellow Sea frontline with the North, after Seoul said it would stage the artillery exercise on Yeonpyeong island later Monday. "It will happen today," a defense ministry spokesman said without giving a time. Local officials on Yeonpyeong made a similar loudspeaker announcement Monday morning. They later told residents, reporters, officials and others on the island to move to ...

Murphy Report reveals Vatican protected sex abuser

The Vatican wanted an Irish priest to serve 10 years in a monastery for abusing children rather than force him out of the Catholic Church, a report has revealed. A previously censored chapter of the Murphy Report describes Tony Walsh as the "most notorious" paedophile to come to its attention. Walsh was jailed for 12 years earlier this month for abusing three boys. But the report said he was likely to have assaulted hundreds of children. The Murphy Report by the Commission of Inquiry was published in November 2009. However, chapter 19 was held back because Walsh was before the courts. On 6 December the former cleric was sentenced to 16 years for sexually abusing three young ...

WikiLeaks: Cuba banned Sicko for depicting 'mythical' healthcare system

A WikiLeaks cable reveals that when Michael Moore's film was shown to Cuban doctors, they were 'disturbed at the blatant misrepresentation of healthcare in Cuba'. Photograph: Max Whittaker/Reuters Cuba banned Michael Moore's 2007 documentary, Sicko, because it painted such a "mythically" favourable picture of Cuba's healthcare system that the authorities feared it could lead to a "popular backlash", according to US diplomats in Havana. The revelation, contained in a confidential US embassy cable released by WikiLeaks , is surprising, given that the film attempted to discredit the US healthcare system by highlighting what it claimed was the ...

YEONPYEONG ISLAND, South Korea – South Korea's military waited for better weather to hold live-fire drills that the North warned would cause it to retaliate, but the high tensions prompted the U.N. Security Council to schedule an emergency meeting at Russia's request. The one-day firing drills are planned by Tuesday on the same front-line island the North shelled last month as the South's military conducted similar drills. The shelling killed four people on Yeonpyeong Island near the tense sea border. The North's Foreign Ministry said Saturday that South Korea would face an unspecified "catastrophe" if the drills take place, in a statement carried by the ...

Swedish police report details case against Assange It bolsters women's assertions that they weren't colluding with his enemies

LONDON — Julian Assange, the founder of the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy organization who was released from a British jail late last week, is facing a new challenge: the leak of a 68-page confidential Swedish police report that sheds new light on the allegations of sexual misconduct that led to Mr. Assange’s legal troubles. The Swedish report traces events over a four-day period in August when Mr. Assange had what he has described as consensual sexual relationships with two Swedish women. Their accounts, which form the basis of an extradition case against Mr. Assange, are that their encounters with him began consensually, but became nonconsensual when he persisted in having unprotected ...

WikiLeaks cables detail Fidel Castro's doomed love for Obama

Dispatches chart Cuban leader's obsession with US president, from admiration to eventual sense of betrayal. Barack and Fidel: like so many great love affairs it was doomed. But memory of the passion, or at least infatuation, lingers. Having seen off 10 US presidents – all committed to his assassination, overthrow or isolation – Fidel Castro had more reason than most to beware the occupant of the Oval Office. But Barack Obama was different. The octogenarian communist revolutionary fell for the young new president and became "obsessed", according to confidential US diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks. Having confidently predicted the US would not elect a black ...

And no, not this time. I’m not talking about Barack Obama, though he would almost certainly finish in the top five. I don’t know how Americans let ourselves be taken to the cleaners time after time. America is undeniably the most open-handed and generous nation that this globe has ever seen. We have held incalculable power with far more restraint than any civilization in history. We’ve also been the world’s greatest saps. It’s a sad truth that the more people receive without expectation of repayment, the more resentful they become. The other sad irony is that these selfsame entities’ very existence would be highly questionable without the auspices of the ...

U.S. officials fear lax security at Indian laboratories could make the facilities targets for terrorists seeking biological weapons to launch attacks across the globe, according to comments in a leaked U.S. diplomatic cable made public Friday. The cable was part of a trove of documents sent from the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi that was obtained by the website WikiLeaks and published Friday by the British newspaper The Guardian. The cables also dealt with accusations of Indian torture in Kashmir, India's complaints about Pakistan's handling of the Mumbai terror attacks, and the concerns of Rahul Gandhi — seen as India's prime-minister-in-waiting — that Hindu extremists ...

The silver-haired Australian, who surrendered to British police Dec. 7, will have to observe a curfew, wear an electronic tag and report to police in person every day.
