Mullen: Risk of War Rising on Korean Peninsula

Mullen: Risk of War Rising on Korean Peninsula Published December 13, 2010 | FoxNews.com The top U.S. military officer said Monday that the danger of war or hostilities on the Korean peninsula is rising, as North Korea warned that cooperation between its southern neighbor and the United States could trigger a nuclear war. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told troops in Baghdad that North Korea has upped the ante in its aggression against South Korea -- a pattern he said is tied to preparations for Kim Jong Il to pass power to his son. The latest example of bellicose rhetoric came with North Korea warning of nuclear war, as South Korea planned live-fire naval ...

Iran Conducts Large Military Exercise Near Iraq Border

TEHERAN — Iran's army has finished a large military exercise by ground forces near the Iraqi border, the official Iranian state news agency IRNA reported Monday. But unlike previous war games in which Iran boasted of weapons advances, the latest maneuvers were largely held under wraps. The report by the IRNA news agency was the first public word that the maneuvers had been held, and even IRNA's confirmation came only indirectly. The report was about the death of two military officers in a road accident as they came back from "large" exercises by ground forces. IRNA gave no further details about the maneuvers. Iran has been holding regular exercises by the ...

Israel May Have No Military Option Against Iran

Every cloud has a silver lining: Maybe lessons will be learned from the fire. Not only fire extinguishers, fire trucks and new planes, but also new thinking, and fire retardants that douse the really big fire. The home front's weakness should teach us that Israel apparently has no military option. This is a much more fateful lesson than all the fire's other lessons, and it should be dealt with. The apocalyptic descriptions of a missile attack on the home front if Israel attacks Iran or Lebanon appear even more apocalyptic in light of Israel's conduct when handling a medium-sized forest fire. Discussions on our future, therefore, should move to the arena that Israelis favor: the ...

Russia's Soyuz Soon To Be Only Lifeline To Space

BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan (AP) -- As a Soyuz spacecraft slowly rolls to its launchpad on the icy cold steppes of Kazakhstan, even the most seasoned space fan cannot help but be spellbound by the sight. With NASA finally retiring the shuttle program next year, the venerable Russian workhorse is now set to become the world's only lifeline to the International Space Station. That predicament is provoking mixed feelings of concern over excess reliance on Russia's space program and enduring admiration for the hardiness of the Soviet-designed Soyuz. "The vehicle is a rugged 'one trick pony,' no frills or luxuries, and can take any licking and keep on ticking," said James ...

Swedes Shocked By 1st Terror Attack In 3 Decades

STOCKHOLM (AP) -- No one died except for the suspected bomber, but two explosions in Sweden's capital tore at the fabric of this tolerant and open nation - a society that hadn't seen a terrorist attack in more than three decades. Two people were wounded in central Stockholm on Saturday in what appeared to be the first suicide bombing in the history of Sweden, which has been spared the major terrorist strikes seen in several other European countries. A car exploded in the middle of the seasonal shopping frenzy, shooting flames and causing several smaller blasts as people ran screaming from the scene. The blast that killed the alleged bomber came moments later a few blocks away ...

Watching the total anarchy playing out in London’s streets… An out-of-control, mindless mob of social welfare government-created clones, clamoring for more and more from a government which has no more to give. Which has had no more to give for a long time. We are witnessing the collapse of the classic nanny state. Told that the government was going to have to raise school tuition fees, these ‘students’, as the ever cowardly lame stream press is calling them, are the direct result of government welfare cradle-to-grave entitlements. It seems the police have been so neutered they cannot even protect the royal family any longer. A couple of those cretins came very close ...

Hundreds Protest Against Russian Govt--Ethnic Tensions Reaching Boiling Point Hundreds of people protested against the Russian government Sunday at two separate rallies in Moscow, with opposition activists calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and nationalists demanding greater rights for ethnic Russians. Several opposition activists were detained. A third rally with nationalist overtones drew more than 1,000 students in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don, raising fears that long-standing ethnic tensions were reaching a boiling point. The rallies followed violent clashes Saturday just outside the Kremlin walls between riot police and about 5,000 football fans and ...

Kissinger: Gassing Jews Would Not Be A US Problem

WASHINGTON – Henry Kissinger is heard saying the genocide of Soviet Jews would not be an American problem on newly released tapes chronicling President Nixon’s obsession with disparaging Jews and other minorities. Kissinger’s remarks come after a meeting between the two men and former prime minister Golda Meir on March 1, 1973, in which Meir pleads for US pressure on the Soviet Union to release its Jews. The men dismiss her plea after Meir leaves. “The emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union is not an objective of American foreign policy,” The New York Times on Saturday quoted Kissinger, then secretary of state, as saying on the tapes. “And if they put Jews ...

WikiLeaks Supporters’ Group To Republish Cables

LONDON (Reuters) - A loose grouping of cyber activists supporting WikiLeaks has abandoned its strategy of online attacks on organizations seen as hostile to the site in favor of spreading the leaked documents far and wide online. Internet activists operating under the name "Anonymous" temporarily brought down this week the websites of credit card giants MasterCard and Visa -- both of which had stopped processing donations to WikiLeaks. The United States, enraged and embarrassed by WikiLeaks' publication of thousands of confidential U.S. diplomatic cables, has leant on organizations from Amazon to online payments service PayPal -- which have now withdrawn services to ...

The Spanish website Free Wikileaks urged rallies at 6 p.m. (1700 GMT) in eight Spanish cities, including Madrid and Barcelona, while similar demonstrations were planned in Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Bogota and Lima. In a manifesto entitled "For freedom, Say No to State Terrorism," it demanded "the release of Julian Assange ...

I have surfed the Internet for many years and the ugliest image for a website is: I want to ask a few questions as a result. Did the site manager go out of his way to pay or direct this same image? If it was paid for, how much did it cost? And how much time was used on the same graphic? Why isn't there any continuity between the image and the general ugly pale blue background that the site manifests?

The cyberattacks are starting to look like the onset of a global struggle by Web anarchists against the mighty EmpireBy Mathew Ingram If the WikiLeaks saga were a comic book, it would be starting to look a lot like the Justice League of America vs. the League of Supervillians—or maybe it's more like Star Wars, with the plucky rebel alliance up against the might of the Empire. As the U.S. government and a variety of corporations, such as Visa (V) and PayPal (EBAY), keep up the pressure on the document-leaking organization that they see as a traitor and a scofflaw, a rough alliance of supporters have taken it upon themselves to wage a cyberwar in WikiLeaks' defense by attacking ...

Volunteers download attack tool, organizers recruit hacker botnets, say researchers Gregg Keizer The retaliatory attacks by pro-WikiLeaks activists are growing in strength as hackers add botnets and thousands of people download an open-source attack tool, security researchers said today. In recent days, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks have been launched against several sites, including those belonging to Amazon, MasterCard, PayPal and the Swiss payment transaction firm PostFinance, after each terminated WikiLeaks accounts or pulled the plug on services. As of Thursday, WikiLeaks had posted the full text of more than 1,200 leaked U.S. State Department cables from its trove ...

Wikileaks Exposes Yet More US Cover-up Of Torture

There is another bombshell release from Wikileaks (via the New York Times) today regarding the diplomatic thuggery practiced by the US embassy in Germany over the rendition and torture of one of its citizens.  The piece in the NYT reports: John M. Koenig, the American deputy chief of mission in Berlin, issued a pointed warning in February 2007 urging that Germany “weigh carefully at every step of the way the implications for relations with the U.S.” in the case of Khaled el-Masri, a German of Lebanese descent. Mr. Masri said he was held in a secret United States prison in Afghanistan and tortured before his captors acknowledged their mistake and let him go. This is evidence ...

Students Attack Prince Charles' Car After Fee Hike Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, react as their car is attacked in London. LONDON – In Britain's worst political violence in years, furious student protesters rained sticks and rocks on riot police, vandalized government buildings and attacked a car carrying Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, after lawmakers approved a controversial hike in university tuition fees. Demonstrators set upon the heir to the throne's limousine as it drove through London's West End shopping and entertainment hub. Protesters who had been running amok and smashing shop windows kicked and threw paint at the car, which ...

The WikiLeaks Vindication of George W. Bush (Saddam had WMDs)

The WikiLeaks de facto declassification of privileged material makes it case closed: Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction -- and intended to restart his program once the heat was off. President George W. Bush, in the 2003 State of the Union address, uttered the infamous "16 words": "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa." Former Ambassador Joe Wilson sprang into action and, in an op-ed piece, in effect wrote, "No, the Cheney administration sent me to investigate the allegation -- and I found it without merit." Put aside that Wilson's CIA-employed wife, not the ...

Hackers Target WikiLeaks 'Enemies': Mastercard, Twitter, Paypal, Even FoxNews

In an unprecedented assault described variously as civil disobedience or criminal hacking, supporters of WikiLeaks struck out Wednesday at perceived enemies of the site and its jailed founder Julian Assange, launching hack attacks against MasterCard, Swedish prosecutors, and others -- and promising future attacks against Twitter, PayPal and even FoxNews.com. The "hacktivists," operating under the label Operation: Payback, claimed responsibility in a Twitter message for causing the outages at MasterCard, which pulled the plug on its relationship with WikiLeaks on Tuesday. An online poster put out by the campaign makes its goals explicit. "We will fire at anyone or anything ...

UN: Hariri indictments will stay sealed for weeks

BEIRUT -- A spokesman for the U.N. tribunal investigating the assassination of a former Lebanese prime minister said Wednesday it will be weeks or even several months before the details of expected indictments are made public. The Netherlands-based tribunal investigating the 2005 killing of Rafik Hariri in a massive Beirut truck bombing is expected to issue its first indictments as soon as this month. But a court spokesman, Crispin Thorold, said that the contents will remain confidential until confirmed by the pretrial judge, which could take "at least six to 10 weeks" from the time the indictments are submitted. The court has kept silent on possible suspects, but several ...

The United States has no plans to file an extradition request for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who turned himself to London police on Tuesday, a State Department spokesman said. Last week, Swedish prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for the 39-year-old Australian on sexual assault charges. Assange denies the allegations. "Well, our investigation is ongoing. And beyond that, as to his arrest, this is, at this point, an issue between Britain and Sweden," Philip Crowley said. He also said the U.S. did not provide information to British courts and has no plans to do so in the future. "I cannot say that the United States has been drawn into this issue this morning. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should be nominated for a Nobel prize, a source in the Kremlin told RIA Novosti on Wednesday. "Non-governmental and governmental organizations should think of ways to help him. Perhaps he could be awarded a Nobel prize," the source said. The founder of the controversial whistleblowing website was arrested in London on Tuesday. He was wanted by Sweden on sex assault charges. An arrest warrant for Assange was issued by Swedish prosecutors last week just days after his website published the first batch of over 250,000 confidential U.S. diplomatic cables. World leaders and diplomats have downplayed the impact of the information leak on ...

Fire Services Report Shows Israel Unready For War, Again

The State Comptroller's report on Israel's fire services is gaining much public attention in the wake of last week's Carmel catastrophe. The reality depicted in the report, however, reveals that much greater risks weigh in the balance. State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss focuses on the probability that fire services could literally collapse if faced with rocket attacks against Israel's cities in wartime. In that case, emergency services would have to deal with multiple mass-casualty events taking places at the same time and on multiple fronts – without the possibility of amassing fire teams from different regions to one spot, as was the case with the Carmel wildfire. ...

A numbr of leading rabbis who signed on to a religious ruling to forbid renting homes to gentiles – a move particularly aimed against Arabs – defended their decision on Tuesday with the declaration that the land of Israel belongs to the Jews. Signatories include the chief rabbis of Ramat Hasharon, Ashdod, Kiryat Gat, Rishon Letzion, Carmiel, Gadera, Afula, Nahariya, Herzliya, Nahariya and Pardes Hannah, among a number of other cities. IN 1958 a young Rupert Murdoch, then owner and editor of Adelaide's The News, wrote: "In the race between secrecy and truth, it seems inevitable that truth will always win." His observation perhaps reflected his father Keith Murdoch's expose that Australian troops were being needlessly sacrificed by incompetent British commanders on the shores of Gallipoli. The British tried to shut him up but Keith Murdoch would not be silenced and his efforts led to the termination of the disastrous Gallipoli campaign. Nearly a century later, WikiLeaks is also fearlessly publishing facts that need to be made public. I grew up in a Queensland country town where people spoke their minds ...
