JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Two Israeli brothers suspected of involvement in organized crime were extradited to the United States. The United States requested their extradition more than two years ago on charges of money laundering, extortion and drug trafficking. They also are accused of killing a drug dealer. Three other Israelis also were extradited Wednesday on the same charges. They were indicted in 2008 by a California court following a six-year police investigation in several countries. If the Abergils are convicted and sentenced to jail, they will be permitted to serve ...

The letter delivered Tuesday says that Pollard has "now paid a huge price for his espionage on behalf of Israel and should be released from prison." In the letter, Schultz also said that he is impressed that people who are "best informed" about the classified material that Pollard passed to Israel favor his release. Schultz, 90, served as secretary of state for seven years under President Reagan. He served in the same government as Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, whose opinion was used by the court to sentence Pollard to ...

An Italian man has astonished doctors by sneezing a bullet out through his nose after being shot in the head. Darco Sangermano, 28, had been taken to hospital in Naples for emergency treatment after being hit by a stray bullet during New Year's Eve celebrations. The bullet passed behind his right eye and lodged in his nostril, but miraculously did no serious damage. He is expected to make a full recovery, doctors say. Mr Sangermano had spent New Year's Eve with his girlfriend in Naples. As the city sky exploded in a traditional celebration of fireworks, firecrackers - and the occasional high-spirited blast of firearms - he was wandering the streets when a stray .22 calibre ...

LONDON (AP) WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange vowed Tuesday to step up his site's release of secret documents while he fights extradition to Sweden, as his lawyers argued that sending him to Stockholm could land him in Guantanamo Bay or even on U.S. death row. That claim, regarded by many legal experts as extremely unlikely, is part of an preliminary defense argument released by Assange's attorneys ahead of a court hearing next month. The Australian computer expert is wanted in Sweden to answer sex-crimes allegations. American officials also are trying to build a criminal case against WikiLeaks, which has published a trove of leaked diplomatic cables and secret U.S. military ...

China has conducted the first test-flight of its J-20 stealth fighter, Chinese President Hu Jintao has confirmed to US Defence Secretary Robert Gates. The confirmation came after images of the 15-minute flight in Chengdu appeared on several Chinese websites. Mr Hu said that the flight had not been timed to coincide with Mr Gates' visit, the US defence secretary said. The US is currently the only nation with a fully operational stealth plane. But both Russia and China are known to be working on prototypes of stealth fighters, which are invisible to radar. Mr Gates' three-day visit to Beijing comes amid US concern over the speed at which China's military is modernising and ...

ISLAMABAD: The confessed killer of a liberal Pakistani politician provided a judge Monday with the names of two men whose sermons allegedly sparked him to act, as YouTube footage emerged of the assassin chanting Islamic verses in police custody. The slaying of Punjab province Gov. Salman Taseer nearly a week ago shocked many around the world, but tens of thousands of Pakistanis have expressed support for 26-year-old Mumtaz Qadri, who said he killed the governor for criticizing laws that carry the death penalty for insulting Islam. That support _ and the lack of criticism of the assassination by many politicians _ shows the increasing influence of hardline religious ideology in Pakistan, a ...

Egypts majority Muslim population stuck to its word Thursday night. What had been a promise of solidarity to the weary Coptic community, was honoured, when thousands of Muslims showed up at Coptic Christmas eve mass services in churches around the country and at candle light vigils held outside. From the well-known to the unknown, Muslims had offered their bodies as human shields for last nights mass, making a pledge to collectively fight the threat of Islamic militants and towards an Egypt free from sectarian strife. We either live together, or we die together, was the sloganeering genius of Mohamed El-Sawy, a Muslim arts tycoon whose cultural centre ...

It has been promoted as a cutting-edge technological marvel and marketed as the ultimate solution to the misery Israeli civilians experienced facing rocket attacks from Gaza militants. But as the Iron Dome rocket defense system moves into its final stages of development, Israelis are questioning its effectiveness, and American lawmakers are seeking assurances that the system they are poised to fund will indeed be used to protect citizens in the battered Negev city of Sderot, close by Gaza, and not just to defend military bases. Some in Israel fear that a system originally promised as a protective shield for civilians is being shifted instead to protect strategic military assets. And this ...

Chinese Military Eyes Preemptive Nuclear Strike In Event Of Crisis Post Date: 2011-01-06 11:52:47 by Brian S

In what could be a departure from China's declared stand of a 'no-first-use' policy, the Chinese military will consider launching a preemptive nuclear strike if the country finds itself faced with a critical situation in a war with another nuclear state, the Japanese media reported. The newly revealed policy, called "Lowering the threshold of nuclear threats," may contradict China's strategy of no first use of nuclear weapons under any circumstances, and is likely to fan concern in the United States, Japan, India and other regional powers about Beijing's nuclear capability, the media here said, citing secret internal PLA documents. The People's Liberation ...

Israel told US officials in 2008 it would keep Gaza's economy "on the brink of collapse" while avoiding a humanitarian crisis, according to U.S. diplomatic cables published by a Norwegian daily on Wednesday. Three cables cited by the Aftenposten newspaper, which has said it has all 250,000 U.S. cables leaked to WikiLeaks, showed that Israel kept the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv briefed on its internationally criticized blockade of the Gaza Strip. The territory, home to 1.3 million Palestinians, is run by the Islamist Hamas group, which is shunned by the West over its refusal to recognize Israel, renounce violence or accept existing interim Israeli-Palestinian peace deals. Binyamin Netanyahu became the first prime minister to formally and publicly request the release of Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard when he sent US President Barack Obama a historic letter on Tuesday. In a speech to the Knesset, Netanyahu said he decided to accept a request he received from Pollard himself three weeks ago to change the strategy that he and other prime ministers had employed unsuccessfully of only working for his release via contacts behind the scenes with the White House. Netanyahu recounted his own past attempts to bring about ...

Kabul, Afghanistan The Associated Press Iran's decision to stop up to 2,500 fuel trucks at its border with Afghanistan is tantamount to an embargo, an Afghan commerce official said Tuesday, as others warned the move could leave millions of Afghans shivering as winter rolls in. The unofficial ban, now in its second week, has pushed up wholesale domestic fuel prices as much as 70 per cent. The shortage of fuel also threatens to stop trucks loaded with commercial goods from reaching the capital along a key southern transport route. Iran on Tuesday acknowledged a link between the ban and its recent decision to slash domestic fuel subsidies in a bid to cut costs and ...

January 2, 2011 JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Iran has missiles that can reach Israel in 12 minutes, according to cables released by WikiLeaks. Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi told a U.S. Congressional delegation in November 2009 that the Islamic Republic has over 300 missiles that can reach the Jewish state in up to 12 minutes, according to the cables released on Sunday. He also reportedly told the lawmakers, led by Ike Skelton (D-Mo.),that he was preparing Israel's military for a major war against Hamas, saying that "I'm preparing the Israeli army for a major war, since it is easier to scale down to a smaller operation than to do the opposite." A record number of Americans oppose the US war in Afghanistan, according to a recently released poll. A national CNN/Opinion Research poll (.pdf) Thursday revealed that a majority thought the war was going badly and 63 percent completely opposed it. Only 35 percent favored the war. That's down from December 2008, when 52 percent were in favor of the continued occupation. The survey showed a clear partisan divide. A majority of Republicans supported the war. In comparison, more than six in ten independents and 74 percent of Democrats were in opposition. Lindsey Graham: Permanent U.S. Presence In Afghanistan Would Be 'Enormously Beneficial' Post Date: 2011-01-02 15:34:16 by Brian S

NEW HAVEN -- There was, with really no notable exception, an absence of discussion of the Afghanistan war during the course of the 2010 campaign. But that may have been more a product of the electoral landscape (congressional races often don't lend themselves to foreign policy debates) and strategic timelines (the start date for withdrawal begins in July 2011) than anything else. And, indeed, during an interview Sunday morning, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) provided some indication that Republicans would push U.S. permanency in Afghanistan in the years ahead, insisting that it would be "enormously beneficial" to show that type of force "in perpetuity." "I ...

Residents of Rockhampton, Australia, joined a growing number of evacuees on Saturday as floodwaters threatened to sink the coastal city as the water spread across the country. Residents fled rising waters on a dark Saturday night as helicopters dropped off supplies from the now-isolated city. Days of rain have overflowed riverbeds and flooded an area of Australia larger than France and Germany combined. "In many ways, it is a disaster of biblical proportions," Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser told reporters in the flooded city of Bundaberg on Saturday. So far, around 200,000 people have been affected by the floodwaters as the water spreads and makes its way toward the ...
