Sanaa, Yemen (CNN) -- As the ninth day of protests left one dead and five wounded Saturday, Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh blamed the roiling unrest on foreign agendas and a plot against Yemen's stability, according to state-run Saba news agency. "Everybody has the right to express his views peacefully and has the right to have a say through media as there are many democratic means for the expression of opinion," Saleh told Saturday's founding conference of Civil Society Organizations, according to the Saba agency. The president said he hoped the conference will come up recommendations to alleviate the country's current unstable situation. "We do not want ...

TRIPOLI | Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:15pm EST TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Security forces in Libya's second city killed at least three people on Saturday but have withdrawn to a fortified compound, a witness said, after the worst unrest in Muammar Gaddafi's four decades in power. Human Rights Watch said 84 people have been killed over the past three days in a fierce security crackdown mounted in response to anti-government protests that sought to emulate uprisings in neighboring Egypt and Tunisia. There was no sign of a nationwide revolt, with the violence concentrated around the city of Benghazi, 1,000 km (600 miles) east of the capital, where support for Gaddafi traditionally has been weaker ...
Bahrain Protesters Swarm Square, Police Flee Post Date: 2011-02-19 14:23:16 by Brian S

(Reuters) - Anti-government protesters in Bahrain swarmed back into a symbolic square on Saturday, putting riot police to flight in a striking victory for their cause and confidently setting up camp for a protracted stay. Crowds had approached Pearl Square in Manama from different directions, creating a standoff with riot police who had moved in earlier to replace troops withdrawn on royal orders. Suddenly police raced to their buses, which drove away mounting kerbs in their haste to escape. The emboldened protesters, cheering and waving national flags, ran to the center of the traffic circle, reoccupying it even before all the police had left. The crowd waved fleeing policemen through. ...
After Years Of Trying, Moderate Islamic Party Gets Official Recognition In Post-Mubarak Egypt Post Date: 2011-02-19 14:20:58 by Brian S

CAIRO A moderate Islamic party outlawed for 15 years was granted official recognition Saturday by an Egyptian court in a sign of increasing political openness after the fall of autocratic President Hosni Mubarak. Al-Wasat Al-Jadid, or the New Center, was founded in 1996 by activists who split off from the conservative Muslim Brotherhood and sought to create a political movement promoting a tolerant version of Islam with liberal tendencies. Its attempts to register as an official party were rejected four times since then, most recently in 2009. In 2007, Human Rights Watch accused Mubarak and his ruling National Democratic Party of using the law that governs the formation of ...

CAIRO State media on Friday said Egypt has agreed to let two Iranian naval vessels transit the Suez Canal. State-run news agency MENA said that authorities approved a request from Iranian diplomats who offered assurances that the two ships won't have weapons or nuclear or chemical material. The move had been widely expected and Iranian officials have insisted the request is in line with international regulations. They said the two vessels are headed to Syria for training. On Thursday, the two Iranian naval vessels submitted a request to transit the Suez Canal, Egypt's Foreign Ministry said. Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki said Egyptian authorities received the request to ...

MANAMA, Bahrain Government forces opened fire on hundreds of mourners marching toward Pearl Square Friday, sending people running away in panic amid the boom of concussion grenades. But even as the people fled, at least one helicopter sprayed fire on them and a witness reported seeing mourners crumpling to the ground. It was not immediately clear what type of ammunition the forces were firing, but some witnesses reported live fire from automatic weapons and the crowd was screaming live fire, live fire. At a nearby hospital, witnesses reported seeing people with very serious injuries and gaping wounds, at least some of them caused by rubber bullets that appeared to have ...

By Gal Beckerman, Published February 16, 2011 Did Jews commit genocide in 1948? The question is provocative, and the answer for most people is an unequivocal no. But a debate over this idea has formed the crux of a heated argument among the most eminent genocide scholars in the world, and led recently to the censure of an Israeli professor by the fields leading academic association. Its also one more reminder of the growing divide between European scholars and their American and Israeli counterparts ...

Egypt Gets Its Khomeini, Yusuf al-Qaradawi Returns in Triumph Post Date: 2011-02-18 08:11:56 by Happy Quanzaa

Friday, February 18 may be a turning point in Egyptian history. On this day Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the best-known Muslim Brotherhood cleric in the world and one of the most famous Islamist thinkers, will address a mass rally in Cairo. It was 32 years ago almost to the day when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned in triumph to Tehran to take the leadership of that country. Qaradawi has a tougher job but he's up to the challenge if his health holds up. Up until now, the Egyptian revolution generally, and the Brotherhood in particular, has lacked a charismatic thinker, someone who could really mobilize the masses. Qaradawi is that man. Long resident in the Gulf, he is returning to his ...

Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak refused to respond to telephone calls from US President Barack Obama becase he still felt offended by Obama's statement in which he called on Mubarak "to step down immediately," London-based Arabic language daily Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported on Thursday. Mubarak, still living in "presidential style" in Sharm el-Sheikh, according to the report, refused an invitation from Saudi King Abdullah to come to the kingdom, telling him he preferred to die on Egyptian soil. The report said that it was not clear if Mubarak had been in contact with Egypt's new military rulers through his former deputy Omar Suleiman.

CBS complicit in newscoverup Dateline Egypt: [60 Minutes] correspondent Lara Logan was repeatedly sexually assaulted by thugs yelling, Jew! Jew! as she covered the chaotic fall of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairos main square Friday. Powerful reporting on an important story. Two problems: It didnt run until yesterday, and CBS didnt run it. The quote is from the New York Post. And it was The Wall Street Journal that reported the separation and assault lasted roughly 20 to 30 minutes. But CBS? They sat on their own story. For five days, as reporters reveled amid giddy celebrations in Tahrir Square, and as President ...

(Reuters) - Iraq's capital wants the United States to apologize and pay $1 billion for the damage done to the city not by bombs but by blast walls and Humvees since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein. The city's government issued its demands in a statement on Wednesday that said Baghdad's infrastructure and aesthetics have been seriously damaged by the American military. "The U.S. forces changed this beautiful city to a camp in an ugly and destructive way, which reflected deliberate ignorance and carelessness about the simplest forms of public taste," the statement said. "Due to the huge damage, leading to a loss the Baghdad municipality cannot ...

He is a hypermarket of dogma, dispensing advice on subjects ranging from mother's milk to suicide bombing. But few have as much influence on Sunni Muslims as the Muslim televangelist Youssef al-Qaradawi. He says what the Muslim Brotherhood in Egpyt thinks -- and he provides clues to how they might act. This man is a word machine, a one-man talk show that leaves no subject unexamined. Youssef al-Qaradawi has to talk: about former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, about mothers' milk banks, and about the right of Palestinian women to blow themselves up. He is a driven man. There are so many decisions to be made in this godforsaken modern age, and yet there is only one mufti, only ...

I have had just about all the Global Warming I can stand. I havent seen a winter this cold and miserable for so long, for many years. I am ready for spring. When it is 20 below zero, and the wind is blowing, my thoughts turn to Reverend Al Gore and his faith-based Global Warming Cult. When you belong to a cult common sense is out the window. The only people I know personally who still believe in so-called man made global warming, are women who either dont work or have a job inside a nice warm building. They also never listen to news shows and try to educate their self. If you want to hear cuss words, just ask a man (or woman) who works outdoors what they think ...

The Arab world prepared Thursday evening for a tense day of prayer Friday, after anti-government protests in Iran, Libya, Bahrain, and Yemen claimed a number of lives. On the fourth day of protests, Bahrain's leaders were especially cautious. At a meeting of the Gulf States' foreign ministers, Bahrain's Khalid al-Khalifa said none of the other states had sent armed forces in to provide backup for its army. The foreign ministers were concerned over Iran's apparent involvement in the protests, which were mainly organized by Shiites. But al-Khalifa rejected the notion. "Bahrain's Shiites are loyal to the state," he said. Meanwhile, at least ten people were ...

CAIRO (Reuters) Egyptian youth leaders moved to set up a new political party on Thursday as the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood played an increasingly important role in preparing for post-Mubarak elections promised within six months. Pro-democracy leaders plan to bring one million people out on the streets for a "Victory March" on Friday to celebrate Mubarak's ouster, and perhaps remind the generals now in charge of the power of the street that ended Hosni Mubarak's rule. Inspired by Egypt, and a Tunisian revolt before that, protesters have taken to the streets across the Middle East and North Africa. Bahrain has cracked down on anti-government protesters and clashes ...

Deadly clashes broke out in several towns in Libya on Thursday after the opposition called for protests against leader Muammar Gaddafi in a rare show of defiance inspired by uprisings in other Arab states. Tight controls on media and communications in Libya made it difficult to assess the extent of the violence there. Unrest has spread across North Africa and the Middle East since the fall of the leaders of Tunisia and Egypt. A resident in the eastern city of Benghazi said at least five people had been killed in nearby towns. With phone lines out of order and access barred for journalists, it was impossible to establish an exact death toll. In the capital of the oil-exporting country ...

WASHINGTON The Obama administration expressed alarm and displeasure Thursday over a violent crackdown on anti-government protesters in key U.S. ally Bahrain as a wave of political upheaval moved across the Middle East. President Barack Obama supports peaceful protesters as Mideast nations deal with a wave of political upheaval, White House press secretary Jay Carney said, but the president also does not want to dictate a political outcome in Bahrain. Carney told reporters that the government of Bahrain should observe universal rights, including the right of peaceful assembly. "We simply think it is the wrong way to go," he said of the violence. "We think our voice ...
Democrats Partying like it's 1995 Post Date: 2011-02-17 16:00:52 by no gnu taxes

In 1995, Bill Clinton and House Speaker Newt Gingrich faced off over Newt's proposed budget, which included spending cuts in non-essential government services and proposed reductions in the rate of growth of entitlement spending. At the time, the country was facing a roughly $300 billion budget deficit, and Republicans were serious about getting federal spending under control.
But Bill Clinton, the master of phony tear-wiping, lip-biting "I feel your pain" sentimentalism, fought hard against Gingrich and led the Democrats in a brutal portrayal of Republicans as evil hate-mongers bent on starving children, poisoning the environment, killing AIDS patients, and forcing the elderly to skip ...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Confidential diplomatic cables from the U.S. embassies in Beijing and Hong Kong lay bare China's growing influence as America's largest creditor. As the U.S. Federal Reserve grappled with the aftershocks of financial crisis, the Chinese, like many others, suffered huge losses from their investments in American financial firms -- from Lehman Brothers to the Primary Reserve Fund, the money market fund that broke the buck. The cables, obtained by WikiLeaks, show that escalating Chinese pressure prompted a procession of soothing visits from the U.S.Treasury Department. In one striking instance, a top Chinese money manager directly asked U.S. Treasury Secretary ...

Who rules Egypt, and who will rule it tomorrow? After 30 years the Hosni Mubarak period is coming to a close, but how the period ends—in violence and turmoil, or on a stable path to democracy—remains unclear. Mubarak's insistence on staying in office until the bitter end may sacrifice the opportunity for a peaceful transition. His defiance is bringing Egypt's Army closer and closer to the fateful decision to turn against the people—the only alternative to throwing Mubarak out.
Mubarak's fatal mistakes in recent years, the products of aging, his wife's dynastic ambitions, and the distance from the people that three decades in office made almost inevitable, were to refuse even minimal ...
Was Mubarak poisoned? Reports persist that he has fallen into a coma. But was he pushed? Post Date: 2011-02-17 07:25:05 by A K A Stone

The fate of Hosni Mubarak is shrouded in mystery, with reports emerging that he has slipped into a coma and is near death. The former leader of Egypt, 83, had been suffering from lethal pancreatic cancer. But the odd coincidence of his falling from power and his falling into a coma has given rise to speculation that he wasn't fallen into a comatose state. He may have been pushed. Mubarak's "health is deteriorating drastically," an Egyptian security official told London-based Arabic-language newspaper a-Sharq al-Awsat on Tuesday. The source added that those around Mubarak were refusing attempts to bring him abroad - most likely to Germany - to receive medical care. ...
