Influential Muslim cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi has issued a fatwa that any Libyan soldier who can shoot dead embattled leader Muammar Gaddafi should do so 'to rid Libya of him.' 'Whoever in the Libyan army is able to shoot a bullet at Mr Gaddafi should do so,' Qaradawi, an Egyptian-born cleric who is usually based in Qatar, told Al-Jazeera television. He also told Libyan soldiers 'not to obey orders to strike at your own people,' and urged Libyan ambassadors around the world to dissociate themselves from Gaddafi's regime. Famous in the Middle East for his at times controversial fatwas, or religious edicts, the octogenarian Qaradawi has celebrity status in the ...

TRIPOLI (Agencies) Residents of Tripoli said on Monday there had been "a massacre" in the Tajura and Fashlum districts of the Libyan capital, with indiscriminate shooting and air strikes and women among the dead. "What happened today in Tajura was a massacre," one resident of the district said. "Armed men were firing indiscriminately. There are even women among the dead," adding that mosque loudspeakers were putting out appeals for help. Another witness in Fashlum said that helicopters had landed what he called armed African mercenaries in the neighbourhood, and that the gunmen then opened fire on anyone in the street, causing a large number of deaths. Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has fled Libya and may be heading for Venezuela, William Hague said today. The Foreign Secretary said he had seen 'information' that suggests Gaddafi is on his way to the South American country - as Libya was up in flames amid increasingly bloody battles between protesters and security forces. Libyan fighter jets and helicopters reportedly fired on protesters in the capital Tripoli, with indiscriminate bombing runs leaving 'many, many dead'. One protester told Al Jazeera:'What we are witnessing today is unimaginable. Warplanes and helicopters are indiscriminately bombing one area after another. There are many, many dead. 'Our people ...

The Gates of Hell Have Opened in Tripoli Post Date: 2011-02-21 15:15:15 by go65

I am watching Aljazeera Arabic, which is calling people in Tripoli on the telephone and asking them what is going on in the capital. The replies are poignant in their raw emotion, bordering on hysteria. The residents are alleging that the Qaddafi regime has scrambled fighter jets to strafe civilian crowds, has deployed heavy artillery against them, and has occupied the streets with armored vehicles and strategically-placed snipers. One man is shouting that the gates of Hell have opened in the capital and that this is Halabja! (where Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein ordered helicopter gunships to hit a Kurdish city with sarin gas, killing 5000 in 1988). Two defecting ...

A video currently doing the rounds on Twitter and Facebook shows dead bodies who were burnt and covered with green flags. CAIRO, Egypt — Libya's ambassadors at the United Nations are calling for leader Moammar Gadhafi to step down as the country's ruler.
Deputy Ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi said Monday that if Gadhafi does not relinquish power, ``the Libyan people will get rid of him.''
Dabbashi urged the international community to impose a no-fly zone over Libya to prevent mercenaries, weapons and other supplies from reaching Gadhafi and his security forces.
Dabbashi also said he was not resigning.
The diplomat says the Libyan delegation is also urging the International Criminal Court to investigate possible crimes against humanity committed against the Libyan people during the current ...

(Reuters) - British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Monday he had seen some information to suggest Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi had fled the country and was on his way to Venezuela. "You asked me earlier about whether Colonel Gaddafi is in Venezuela," he told reporters on the sidelines of a European Union foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels. "I have no information that says he is, but I have seen some information that suggests he is on his way there at the moment." Diplomats said Hague was not referring to rumors circulating in the media about Gaddafi's whereabouts, but to separate sources for the information. World L

Feb 21 (Reuters) - A coalition of Libyan Muslim leaders has issued a declaration telling all Muslims it is their duty to rebel against the Libyan leadership. "They have demonstrated total arrogant impunity and continued, and even intensified, their bloody crimes against humanity. They have thereby demonstrated total infidelity to the guidance of God and His beloved Prophet (peace be upon him)," said the group, called the Network of Free Ulema of Libya. "This renders them undeserving of any obedience or support, and makes rebelling against them by all means possible a divinely ordained duty," the group said in a declaration obtained by Reuters on Monday. Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's son, Sayf al-Islam, has warned of civil war in the country. He said that the government would "fight to the last bullet" to stay in office. In a TV address to the nation broadcast as anti-government protests spread to the capital Tripoli, he admitted that the military had over-reacted against protesters. But he accused opposition groups and Islamists of trying to break up Libya. He played down casualties, suggesting that at most 14 people, not 200, died in clashes in the eastern city of Benghazi. And he promised "reform and democracy", saying that Libya's legislative forum would meet on Monday. Heavy gunfire could be heard ...

Remember, in a former post, when I said that Saudis were captivated and shocked by what happened in Tunis and Egypt but hadnt collectively made up their mind about it? Well it appears that they have. Everywhere I go and everything I read points to a revolution in our own country in the foreseeable future. However we are still on the ledge and havent jumped yet. I know that some analysts are worried particularly of Saudi Arabia being taken over by Al Qaeda or a Sunni version of the Iranian Islamic Revolution. Calm down. Besides my gut feeling (which is rarely wrong), the overwhelming majority of people speaking out and calling out for a revolution are people who want democracy ...

Moammar Gadaffi pitched his tent on an estate belonging to Donald Trump in suburban New York on Tuesday, according to reports. The Libyan leader is scheduled to attend the UN general assembly this week. He had been struggling to find a plot to accommodate the large Bedouin tent he takes with him when travelling abroad. Workers were seen on Tuesday erecting a tent and satellites in the glamorous neighbourhood of Bedford on an estate owned by Trump. Local officials tried to stop them, saying it was illegal to build a temporary residence without a permit. An ABC News helicopter filmed a large tent on the 45 hectare Seven Springs estate, with rugs and patterned wall hangings. Green and yellow ...
Common Thread to Middle East Protests: Young, Connected Populations Post Date: 2011-02-20 13:38:37 by jwpegler

There have been a lot of uninformed commentaries on the cause of the various uprisings in the Middle East, especially among the neo-cons who have become hysterical about a plot by the Muslim Brotherhood to take over the Middle East and then the world. The fact is that the situations in the countries experiencing protests in the middle east are all very different. 1.) Tunisia is a relatively wealthy country. The protests there are very similar to what happened in Chile and many Southeast Asian countries in the 80s and 90s -- people who got some amount of economic freedom finally demanded political freedom as well. 2.) Egypt is very poor and corrupt. Young people decided not to take it any ...

So in addition to the Obamas, other international leaders who could add lots of bling to the affair, like French President Nicolas Sarkozy and wife Carla Bruni, are not on the list. Most of the 1,900 people invited to the wedding are drawn from the Royal ...

5. Dear right wing blogosphere and also Bill Maher: You cant generalize about womens position in Muslim countries based on a reprehensible mob attack on CBS reporter Lara Logan. Generalizing about a whole group of people based on a single incident is called bigotry. It is also a logical fallacy (for wingnuts challenged by six syllables in a row, that means, when your brain doesnt work right) known as the Hasty Generalization. Nobody seems to note that allegedly helpless Egyptian women were the ones who saved Logan, or that Anderson Cooper was also attacked. Some other examples of reporters or celebrities being assaulted by crowds are ...

Palestinians on Saturday called for a day of rage this Friday to protest against the US administrations decision to veto a United Nations Security Council resolution that would have condemned Israel for building in the settlements. Expressing outrage over Fridays veto, the Palestinian Authority threatened to reassess its position on the Middle East peace process. Israel, in contrast, welcomed the veto and called on the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table. Fridays decision by the US makes it clear that the only path to... peace will come through direct negotiations and not through the decisions of international bodies. We are ...

(Reuters) - Two Iranian naval ships will sail through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean on Monday, a Suez Canal official said, in what will be the first passage of Iranian naval ships through the canal since 1979. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has described Iran's plan to send the ships through the canal en route to Syria as a "provocation." The official said the vessels would arrive at the southern mouth of the canal in the Red Sea's Gulf of Suez on Sunday. They would enter the canal in the northern convoy on Monday morning and complete the journey to the Mediterranean by evening. An Egyptian army source said on Friday that the military, which has been ...

As it was during the early days of the mass antigovernment uprising in Egypt, the United States finds itself in a tricky position regarding Bahrain. Just two months ago, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pronounced herself very impressed by the progress that Bahrain is making on all fronts economically, politically, socially. There seems to be a strong broadly-held commitment to democracy, she said at a town hall meeting in Manama, Bahrains capital and largest city. That was before pro-democracy demonstrators filled the streets and government forces responded with deadly force, killing at least four people and sending dozens to hospitals. ...
