10 mins ago SOMA, Japan – Dangerous levels of radiation leaking from a crippled nuclear plant forced Japan to order 140,000 people to seal themselves indoors Tuesday after an explosion and a fire dramatically escalated the crisis spawned by a deadly tsunami. In a nationally televised statement, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said radiation had spread from the four stricken reactors of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant along Japan's northeastern coast. The region was shattered by Friday's 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the ensuing tsunami that is believed to have killed more than 10,000 people, plunged millions into misery and pummeled the world's third-largest economy. ...

More than 1,000 Saudi Arabian troops have been deployed in Bahrain, following fresh protests over the weekend that pitted protesters from the tiny Gulf monarchy's Shia majority against riot police. Early reports said that over 100 vehicles crossed into Bahrain where the Shi'ite majority has been protesting againt the ruling Sunni royal family. No tanks or missile launchers are reported to be among the lightly armoured military vehicles in the convoy. Later reports suggested the troops were headed for Riffa, a Sunni muslim area where the royal family are based.

RADIATION FEARS SPARK PANIC BUYING, EVACUATIONS IN TOKYO Jason Szep and Terril Yue Jones, Reuters March 15, 2011, 10:42 pm TOKYO (Reuters) - Radiation wafted from an earthquake-stricken nuclear power plant toward Tokyo on Tuesday, sparking panic in one of the world's biggest and most densely populated cities. Women and children packed into the departure lounge at an airport, supermarkets ran low on rice and other supplies and frightened residents, tourists and expatriates either stayed indoors or simply left the city. "I'm not too worried about another earthquake. It's radiation that scares me," said Masashi Yoshida, cradling his 5-month-old daughter Hana The ...

Kan Seeks Calm as Japan Tries to Contain Meltdown, Panic Buying

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan called for calm as the government battled to cool three quake- damaged nuclear reactors with seawater and Tokyo shoppers stripped water, food and batteries from supermarket shelves. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano this afternoon said radiation readings outside reactors rocked by explosions were falling below levels that are harmful, while a fire at a separate unit appeared to have been put out. Earlier, Edano had said the steel unit containing the radioactive core of one reactor had been damaged and warned of dangerous contamination. Stocks slumped after the news that a third explosion and fire struck Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima plant ...

Cost of insuring Japanese government debt jumps

The cost of insuring Japanese government debt against default spiked on Tuesday as world stock markets tumbled. Investors have calculated that the chance of a Japanese default has risen significantly since Friday's earthquake. As Japan battled to prevent a major nuclear crisis, the country's five-year credit default swap rose 28 basis points to 122bp. That means it would cost $122,000 to insure $10m of Japanese debt against default. "Risk aversion is dominant this morning as the disaster in Japan has taken on a whole new dimension," said Gavan Nolan of Markit, which provided the CDS data. "Further explosions at the Fukushima nuclear plant have raised the real ...

In Fuel-Cooling Pools, a Danger for the Longer Term

Even as workers race to prevent the radioactive cores of the damaged nuclear reactors in Japan from melting down, concerns are growing that nearby pools holding spent fuel rods could pose an even greater danger. The pools, which sit on the top level of the reactor buildings and keep spent fuel submerged in water, have lost their cooling systems and the Japanese have been unable to take emergency steps because of the multiplying crises. By late Tuesday, the water meant to cool spent fuel rods in the No. 4 reactor was boiling, Japan’s nuclear watchdog said. If the water evaporates and the rods run dry, they could overheat and catch fire, potentially spreading radioactive materials in ...

With the proliferation of digital cameras and video equipment everyone has become their own movie producer these days. Take a video, edit it, and then post it to You Tube for the world to see. Well that is what we have here. A home made video of what it was like to actually be in the midst of the tsunami as it slowly rolls into town. I cannot imagine how one must feel to see the total destruction of what was once your city. To see it happen right before your very eyes and knowing there is nothing you can do to stop it. So if you do have a camera, then take a ...

Apparently not. And solidarity seems especially strong in Japan itself. Perhaps even more impressive than Japan’s technological power is its social strength, with supermarkets cutting prices and vending machine owners giving out free drinks as people work together to survive. Most noticeably of all, there has been no looting, and I’m not the only one curious about this. More at The Telegraph I'm not that curious. I've never been to Japan, I don't know anything about it beyond they make my Playstation 3 work, and looking at it go you'd think a nuclear reactor powers it, so I have high hopes that they'll fix their power plant reactors because they've got ...

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Cooling functions at the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant's No. 2 reactor have failed, the plant operator said Monday, raising fears that the problem could lead to another explosion at the plant following a blast earlier in the day at its No. 3 reactor. Tokyo Electric Power Co. reported the loss of cooling functions as an emergency to the government and began injecting seawater into the No. 2 reactor to cool it down and prevent the melting of its core due to overheating. Similar measures have been taken at the plant's No. 1 and No. 3 reactors and explosions occurred at both reactors during the process, blowing away the roofs and walls of the buildings ...

Crisis continues at Fukushima nuclear plant as fuel rods exposed again

A crisis continued Tuesday at the troubled No. 2 reactor at the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, as fuel rods became fully exposed again after workers recovered water levels to cover half of them in a bid to prevent overheating. The plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., said steam vents of the pressure container of the reactor that houses the rods were closed probably due to the battery problem, raising fears that its core will melt at a faster pace. The firm said it will first lower the pressure of the reactor by releasing radioactive steam and open the vents with new batteries to resume the operation to inject seawater to cool down the reactor. Earlier, cooling ...

Fuel rods at the Number Two reactor at a power plant in quake-hit Fukushima Prefecture remain exposed. Earlier, the Tokyo Electric Power Company said the valve to vent steam and reduce pressure inside the reactor closed at 11 PM on Monday. It said the increased pressure at the reactor made it impossible to pump water in. The water level dropped sharply, possibly fully exposing the fuel rods. The company managed to open the valve to reduce pressure and let seawater into the reactor at around 1 AM on Tuesday. But as of 3 AM, the water level remains low and the fuel rods remain exposed. The company says there has been no pressure increase inside the reactor, and no major change in ...

The World From Berlin: Nuclear Disaster 'Will Have Political Impact as Great as 9/11'

The nuclear disaster in Fukushima makes it hard to ignore the vulnurabilities of the technology. It could spell the end of nuclear power, German commentators argue on Monday. The government in Berlin may now cave in to mounting pressure to suspend its 12-year extension of reactor lifetimes, they say. The nuclear accident at Japan's Fukushima plant following Friday's earthquake and tsunami has led to anxious questions in Germany about the safety of its own nuclear reactors and is putting the government under intense pressure to rethink its decision to extend plant lifetimes by an average of 12 years. German media commentators across the political spectrum are saying the accident in ...

(CNN) -- Fresh white smoke rose again Monday from Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, caused by an explosion at a building tied to the facility's No. 3 reactor. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said that, according to the head of the nuclear facility, the container vessel surrounding the reactor is still intact. Initial reports suggest that radiation levels rose following the explosion late Monday morning, but Edano said he does not believe there has been a massive leak. "We are now collecting information on the concentration of radiation," he said. A wall of the building collapsed due to the blast, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, ...

I am writing this text (Mar 12) to give you some peace of mind regarding some of the troubles in Japan, that is the safety of Japan’s nuclear reactors. Up front, the situation is serious, but under control. And this text is long! But you will know more about nuclear power plants after reading it than all journalists on this planet put together. There was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity. By “significant” I mean a level of radiation of more than what you would receive on – say – a long distance flight, or drinking a glass of beer that comes from certain areas with high levels of natural background radiation. I have been reading every news ...

MANAMA, Bahrain — Hundreds of people were injured in violent clashes Sunday between protesters and armed civilians backed by police in this small island nation. The latest violence came after a month of protests led by the Shiite majority to demand sweeping political reforms and possibly the ouster of the nation's Western-allied Sunni monarchy. The government's Ministry of Interior said in a statement that protest camp tents from near the harbor were "removed." The statement said attempts by uniformed police officers to persuade the protesters to re-open a road reached an impasse and that a group of protesters attacked unarmed police officers.
