Cuba marks Bay of Pigs, opens pivotal Party summit Read more at the Washington Examiner: washingtonexaminer.com/ne...arty-summit#ixzz1JiQFtbum Cuba kicked off a crucial Communist Party congress Saturday with a big military and civilian parade to mark 50 years since the defeat of CIA-backed exiles at the Bay of Pigs, still celebrated here as a landmark triumph over the island's powerful neighbor to the north. Thousands of soldiers high-stepped through sprawling Revolution Plaza as a military band played martial music, not far from an iconic sculpture of Ernesto "Che" Guevara that gazes down from the side of the Interior Ministry building. Helicopters whirred and jet ...

Over the past few weeks, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has publicly rebuked his Prime Minister Vladimir Putin over Libya, distanced himself from Mr. Putin's model of state capitalism and now, on Chinese television of all places, dared to suggest that his mentor is stuck in the past, and that he himself is the better man to steer Russia for the next six years. Meanwhile, over at the White House, deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, the architect of Mikhail Khodorkovsky's downfall and a man widely perceived both inside and outside Russia as Mr. Putin's strong right arm, is facing at least a tactical defeat, if not a strategic one, at the hands of a trio of oligarchs over a ...

The Department of Water Affairs, a global economic meltdown, illegal mining and heavy rains were responsible for Aurora's financial woes, Zondwa Mandela told parliament's portfolio committee on mineral resources yesterday. Mandela, grandson of former president Nelson Mandela and director of Aurora Empowerment Systems, was called to parliament to account for problems at the company's two gold mines. Mandela, who heads the company with President Jacob Zuma's nephew, Khulubuse, said they had been trying since 2009 to raise money to acquire the provisionally liquidated mines of Pamodzi Gold - Grootvlei in Springs on the East Rand and Orkney in North West - through Aurora. ...

US Drone Strike Kills Two US Soldiers in Afghanistan

The ridiculous inaccuracy of the US drone strikes in Afghanistan and Pakistan has taken another turn for the worse. Reports are now emerging that a US drone strike in Helmand Province actually killed two US soldiers. The official explanation is that they were mistaken for Taliban, US air strikes mistaking Afghan police or soldiers for Taliban are fairly common, and sometimes US aircraft will see a bunch of children gathering firewood and think “Taliban.” Having US drones firing US missiles at US soldiers leaves one wondering how little confirmation is actually needed before missiles are fired. The Pentagon has yet to confirm the story, but says the killings are under ...

France and the UK are calling on NATO to step up its bombing efforts in Libya, despite reports of civilian deaths from an allied airstrike. NATO warplanes in Libya reportedly killed several civilians - including women and children - in a bombing south-west of the capital Tripoli. NATO planes bombed the outskirts of the city of Kikla, 100 kilometres from Tripoli. Libyan state television says the bomb struck an area where police were controlling traffic, and says police and civilians - men, women and children - were killed, although the report was not immediately verified independently. "The entrance to Kikla was targeted by a raid by colonialist aggressors who entered an area where ...

IMF says risks not expected to derail economic recovery

The global economy remains firmly on a path to recovery but threats to growth remain, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said. Among the challenges are rising oil prices, unrest in the Middle East, continued inflation in China and debt problems in Europe. In a new forecast, the IMF says the global economy should grow by 4.4% in 2011, the same figure given in January. But the IMF cut its UK growth forecast for 2011 to 1.7% from 2%. It kept its prediction for UK economic growth in 2012 unchanged at 2.3%. Meanwhile, it raised its forecast for Germany's GDP growth this year to 2.5% from 2.2%, and its forecast for 2012 rose slightly to 2.1%. Oil supply risk On the global economy ...

Heavy fighting along eastern Libyan front AJDABIYA, Libya (AP) - Heavy fighting raged for a second day around a key front-line city Sunday as rebels struggled to keep control of a buffer zone protecting their main eastern strongholds. Shelling and gunfire was heard across Ajdabiya after forces loyal to Libyan leader launched their most sustained offensive since being driven back by international airstrikes last month. A hospital chief said at least 13 people have been killed since fighting erupted Saturday and a Libyan official claimed government forces downed two U.S.-built helicopters used by rebels. Rebels are desperate to hang onto the city to give breathing room to their main ...

Pro-government forces in Libya have shelled rebel fighters near Ajdabiya, challenging the rebels' hold on the city. The attacks Saturday forced rebels to retreat, slowing their westward advance toward the oil town of Brega on the Mediterranean Sea. Brega has gone from regime to rebel control and back again several times since the start of an uprising against the government of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. Meanwhile, the Red Cross says a ship carrying medical supplies has docked in Misrata, a town that has been besieged by pro-Gadhafi forces for weeks. It is the only city in western Libya where rebels have been able to maintain control. Some information for this report was provided ...

CAIRO (Reuters) - Thousands of protesters turned their anger on the army on Saturday demanding that Egypt's ruling military council hand power to civilians and pressing for former President Hosni Mubarak to be put on trial. The army, which has ruled Egypt since Mubarak was forced out of office on February 11, has become a growing target for a hardcore of protesters who say the generals are colluding with remnants of Mubarak's network and thwarting calls for a deeper purge. "The military council is part and parcel of the corrupt regime. It is made up of heads of the army that have benefited from Mubarak and his 30 years of robbing the Egyptian people," said Abdullah ...

Mr. Obama's Muddle East

President Obama came into office pledging a new approach to the Middle East. We were told that his middle name -- Hussein -- would give him unprecedented entrée to the corridors of power in that troubled region -- and to the Arab street. Iran We thought a Mideast policy could not be more confused, more feckless than Jimmy Carter's. Carter acceded to, if he did not welcome, the ouster of the Shah in 1979. The Shah was horrible in Carter's eyes. Well, the Ayatollah Khomeini and his mullahs who replaced the Shah were horribler. And still are. Mr. Obama pledged an "open hand" to the mullahs in Tehran. It was spat on. When thousands of young Iranians massed in the ...

20 protesters killed in Syria, witnesses say BEIRUT – Syrian security forces opened fire on tens of thousands of protesters across several cities Friday, killing at least 20 people, wounding hundreds and forcing residents to turn mosques into makeshift hospitals, witnesses and a human rights group said. Ammar Qurabi, who heads Syria's National Organization for Human Rights, said most of the deaths happened in Daraa, a restive southern city that has become a flashpoint for anti-government protests. Sixteen people were killed in Daraa, three in the Damascus suburb of Harasta, and one in the central city of Homs, he said. The government acknowledged violence in Daraa on Friday, but ...

Prospects fade for NATObama kinetic military overthrow of Gaddafi

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libyan rebels said on Friday they repulsed a government assault on the besieged city of Misrata but prospects faded for a military overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. NATO leaders acknowledged the limits of their air power, which has caused rather than broken a military stalemate, and analysts predicted a long-drawn out conflict that could end in the partition of the North African oil producer. Alliance officials expressed frustration that Gaddafi's tactics of sheltering his armor in civilian areas had reduced the impact of air supremacy and apologized for a second "friendly fire" incident on Thursday that rebels said killed five fighters. Misrata, a lone ...

Army Gen. Libyan rebels say NATO airstrikes hittheir forces AJDABIYA, Libya (AP) -- Rebel fighters claimed NATO airstrikes blasted their forces Thursday in another apparent mistake that sharply escalated anger about the military alliance's efforts to cripple Libyan forces. At least five rebels were killed and more than 20 injured, a doctor said. The attack - near the front lines outside the eastern oil port of Brega - would be the second accidental NATO strike against rebel forces in less than a week. It brought cries of outrage from fighters struggling against Moammar Gadhafi's larger and more experienced military. "Down, down with NATO," one fighter shouted as dozens of rebel ...

White House dismissesKhadafy's message toObama TRIPOLI, Libya -- Libyan leader Moammar Khadafy sent a message to US President Barack Obama on Wednesday, FOX News Channel confirmed, but White House officials were quick to dismiss the correspondence, claiming that the embattled despot frequently sends messages to Washington. Authorities in Tripoli and Washington both refused to reveal details of the letter. But a senior White House official told FOX that the Obama administration receives similar notes from Khadafy on a regular basis -- as often as once a month, according to one source. Libyan Rebels: 'Nato Is Now Our Problem' Libyan rebels have accused Nato of being too slow to act - and asked them to suspend operations unless they "do the job properly". Rebel leader Abdel Fattah Younes has complained that the alliance takes hours to respond to events on the battlefield because of an overly bureaucratic process. He claimed the alliance's inaction was allowing Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's forces to advance and was letting them kill people in the rebel-held city of Misratah "every day". He said: "Nato is moving very slowly, allowing Gaddafi forces to advance. Nato has become our problem." Mr Younes also said if Nato had ...

United States government engineers sent to help with the crisis in Japan are warning that the troubled nuclear plant there is facing a wide array of fresh threats that could persist indefinitely, and that in some cases are expected to increase as a result of the very measures being taken to keep the plant stable, according to a confidential assessment prepared by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Among the new threats that were cited in the assessment, dated March 26, are the mounting stresses placed on the containment structures as they fill with radioactive cooling water, making them more vulnerable to rupture in one of the aftershocks rattling the site after the earthquake and tsunami ...

Company Weighs Its Contracts Against Risks of Working in a Sanctioned State BERLIN—A year after German engineering giant Siemens AG pledged to retreat from Iran under international pressure, it is grappling with a thorny problem: a big jump in revenue in the Islamic republic. Siemens has kept a promise not to pursue new projects in Iran. But its existing contracts there underscore how international efforts to curb Tehran's nuclear ambitions have had only limited impact on the state's ability to draw on the technology and expertise it needs to maintain its broader infrastructure. The company's Iranian business also shows how Tehran depends on a powerful tool to maintain ...

* 'Torture victims' in court for landmark claim against British government * Files exposing abuse were flown out of Kenya on eve of independence * 50 year cover up as damning papers languished in Foreign Office * Successful case could open floodgates from claims around world The full horror of a brutal campaign of torture meted out by British officials on Kenyan rebels including Barack Obama's grandfather has emerged for the first time. A cache of secret documents detailing efforts to suppress the Mau Mau uprising has lain hidden in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, in London, for 50 years. Removed from Kenya on the cusp of independence, they were uncovered in January ...
