Bionic hand for 'elective amputation' patient
Post Date: 2011-05-18 19:52:43 by A K A Stone

An Austrian man has voluntarily had his hand amputated so he can be fitted with a bionic limb. The patient, called "Milo", aged 26, lost the use of his right hand in a motorcycle accident a decade ago. After his stump heals in several weeks' time, he will be fitted with a bionic hand which will be controlled by nerve signals in his own arm. The surgery is the second such elective amputation to be performed by Viennese surgeon Professor Oskar Aszmann. The patient, a Serbian national who has lived in Austria since childhood, suffered injuries to a leg and shoulder when he skidded off his motorcycle and smashed into a lamppost in 2001 while on holiday in Serbia. Milo and ...

US publishes white-nose bat killer action plan

US experts have published an action plan that aims to halt the spread of white-nose syndrome (WNS), which has killed more than a million bats. The document offers guidance on a range of issues, including how to identify the disease and improving bio-security. WNS has spread rapidly since it was first found in 2006, and now affects 18 states and four Canadian provinces. The action plan was unveiled at the fourth annual WNS conference in Arkansas, which runs until Thursday. 'Swift Effort' The US Fish and Wildlife Service, which led the formulation of the plan, said that the mobility of bats, the rapid spread of WNS, the potential for human-assisted transmission and the severity ...

'Free-floating' planets found with no star in sight

Japanese astronomers claim to have found free-floating planets orbiting no detectable star Japanese astronomers claim to have found free-floating "planets" which do not seem to orbit a star. Writing in Nature, they say they have found 10 Jupiter-sized objects which they could not connect to any solar system. They also believe such objects could be as common as stars are throughout the Milky Way. The objects revealed themselves by bending the light of more distant stars, an effect called "gravitational microlensing". Objects of large enough mass can bend light, as Albert Einstein predicted. If a large object passes in front of a more distant background star, it may ...

Mainstream Media's Mea Culpa: Arab Spring or Nuclear Winter?

Mainstream Media's Mea Culpa: Arab Spring or Nuclear Winter? Pamela Geller The Washington Post wrote Thursday that the "Arab Spring" has taken "an altogether darker and more sinister turn, one in which the prospect of a brighter future no longer seems so readily assured." So the media is finally recognizing what was happening from the very first in US-allied Muslim countries across the world. Uh, I told you so -- from the very first "Allahu akbar" I warned readers of my website AtlasShrugs.com (and anyone who would listen) that Islamic supremacists would seize power and destroy the little democratic reforms that had inched their way into many of these ...

Schools arrange secret murders

Schools are helping teenage girls keep abortions secret from their parents. Imogen Neale reports. A MOTHER is angry her 16-year-old daughter had a secret abortion arranged by a school counsellor. Helen, not her real name, found out about the termination four days after it had happened. "I was horrified. Horrified that she'd had to go through that on her own, and horrified her friends and counsellors had felt that she shouldn't talk to us," she said. She had suspected something was wrong, but her daughter insisted her tears were over everyday teenage dramas. But Helen confronted her daughter's friends, who said the counsellor had taken the girl for a scan and to ...

Ron Paul: IMF Implicated After Chief Arrested on Attempted Rape Charge

The leader of the International Monetary Fund now embroiled in a criminal assault case in New York City was cleared in 2008 of harassment charges after an affair with an IMF economist. But it's that kind of behavior that should make the world wonder about trusting the IMF, Rep. Ron Paul said Sunday. The 2008 Republican presidential candidate told "Fox News Sunday" that Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who was pulled off an Air France flight moments before take-off from New York Saturday and arrested on charges of a criminal sex act, attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment, said the whole course of events "is a bit ironic." Paul, who makes no secret about his disgust of ...

Top French politician DominiqueStrauss-Kahn dragged off flight at JFK, accused of sodomizing maidIMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn is in hot water with American authorities. A top French politician nicknamed "the great seducer" was dragged off a flight at Kennedy Airport Saturday after he was accused of sodomizing a Manhattan hotel maid, sources said. Port Authority cops grabbed Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund and a presidential hopeful in France, moments before his Air France plane took off about 4:45 p.m. Strauss-Kahn, 62, allegedly crept up behind a maid after she entered his room and forced her to perform oral sex on him, ...

Terminally ill to get right to die faster in Spain
Post Date: 2011-05-14 10:25:14 by Ferret Mike

MADRID—The Spanish government has approved a law that gives terminally ill patients the right to hasten their deaths by halting medical treatment. Health Minister Leire Pajin said that the law would not affect bans on euthanasia or assisted suicide, which outlaw actions that lead to the deaths of those who otherwise would have lived. Halting medical treatment in terminal cases is common practice in Spanish hospitals but was never explicitly permitted. The bill must be approved by Parliament in the coming months. Health officials said the law would apply only to those with months at most to live, and also grants the right to adequate palliative care.

It Begins: US Starting the Baluchi Insurrection

In the shadow of the “Bin Laden” media circus and increasingly aggressive rhetoric between Washington and Islamabad, the corporate-financier funded NGOs that fomented the “Arab Spring” are now cultivating a united Baluchi front ahead of a proposed US-funded Baluchistan insurrection. As early as 2006, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace identified Pakistan’s Baluchistan province as a potential point of leverage against Islamabad and an opportunity to assert foreign intervention. In a 2006 report by the corporate-financier funded think tank titled, “Pakistan: The Resurgence of Baluch Nationalism,” violence starting as early as 2004-2005 is ...

Engineers from the Tokyo Electric Power company (Tepco) entered the No.1 reactor at the end of last week for the first time and saw the top five feet or so of the core's 13ft-long fuel rods had been exposed to the air and melted down. Previously, Tepco believed that the core of the reactor was submerged in enough water to keep it stable and that only 55 per cent of the core had been damaged. Now the company is worried that the molten pool of radioactive fuel may have burned a hole through the bottom of the containment vessel, causing water to leak. "We will have to revise our plans," said Junichi Matsumoto, a spokesman for Tepco. "We cannot deny the possibility that a ...

Pakistanis Refuse to Turn Wreckage Of Downed Stealth Copter Over To US: "China Wants A Look At It"

Unbelievable. The Pakistanis are refusing to comply with US requests to return the wreckage of the downed US Blackhawk helicopter used in the raid to get Osama bin-Laden. The helicopter was modified to contain top secret stealth technology, and the Pakistanis say they're interested in studying the remains. Besides, as one unnamed Pakistani government official told ABC News, the Chinese are very interested in looking at the remains of the helicopter. A U.S. official was quoted as saying he didn't know if the Pakistanis had offered a look at the damaged helicopter to the Chinese, but said he would be "shocked" if the Chinese hadn't already been given access to the ...

A Fruit With a Future

IF there is one thing the dragon fruit has mastered, it’s the art of the Hollywood entrance. It’s not uncommon to hear a chorus of beguiled gasps when a dragon fruit — also known as pitaya or pitahaya — is placed in front of an audience. From the outside the fruit looks like a hot pink bulb ringed with a jester’s crown of curly greenish petals. Slice it open, and there’s a white (or, on rare occasions, fuchsia) scoop of sweet pulp speckled with tiny black seeds. Either way, it suggests an Easter bonnet that Cruella de Vil might wear in a drag remake of “101 Dalmatians,” or an Italian ice meant to be spooned up for space freaks in the cantina scene ...

Bin Laden Is Dead – Let’s Come Home!

Last week marked an important milestone in the war on terrorism for our country. Osama bin Laden applauded the 9/11 attacks. Such deliberate killing of innocent lives deserved retaliation. It is good that bin Laden is dead and justice is served. The way in which he was finally captured and killed shows that targeted retribution is far superior to wars of aggression and nation-building. In 2001 I supported giving the president the authority to pursue those responsible for the vicious 9/11 attacks. However, misusing that authority to pursue nation-building and remaking the Middle East was cynical and dangerous, as the past ten years have proven. It is tragic that it took ten years, trillions ...

Pakistan to let Chinese plunder secret U.S. stealth helicopter downed in Bin Laden raid

The Chinese military could soon get its hands on the wreckage of a secret U.S. 'stealth' helicopter that crash landed in the raid on Osama Bin Laden's compound, Pakistani officials have said. The previously unseen helicopter crashed in the daring dawn raid in Abbottabad earlier this month, with Navy SEALs managing to destroy all but a tail section of the secret aircraft. The U.S. has since demanded the Pakistanis return the destroyed helicopter. But according to ABC news, Pakistani officials have said the Chinese were also 'very interested' in seeing the tail section, with one unnamed official adding: 'We might let [the Chinese] take a look.' Pictures of the ...

Obama Works Osama Into Stump Speech

President Barack Obama added a new applause line in his money trail stump speech: the death of Osama bin Laden. At previous fundraisers, Mr. Obama barely mentioned foreign policy, if at all. But this time, in between putting two women on the Supreme Court and calling for immigration reform, he offered a huge shout out to last week’s operation. “And because of the extraordinary bravery of the men and women who wear this nation’s uniform and the outstanding work of our intelligence agencies, Osama Bin Laden will never again threaten the United States of America. We couldn’t be prouder of them,” he told some 750 people at a fund-raiser in Austin, Texas, Tuesday. The ...

CATO: How Bush Lost bin Laden

By spring 2002, less than a year after the initial U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, President George W. Bush decided to pull most of America’s Special Operations Forces and CIA paramilitary operatives off the hunt for Osama bin Laden so they could be redeployed for a possible war in Iraq. I’ve written about this before, but I did not know the extent to which the war in Iraq contributed to our loss of bin Laden until I read this piece from the Washington Post: --------- The American campaign [in Afghanistan] was conducted primarily from the air. Despite the pleas from CIA operatives, U.S. officials were reluctant to send in ground troops to flush out bin Laden. They told officers on ...

Where’s Hillary? Hasidic paper breaks the rules by editing Clinton out of White House photo

Hillary Clinton's expression, right hand clasped over her mouth in astonishment, is largely responsible for making the above photo iconic--and, to at least one newspaper, sexually suggestive. In the photo, President Obama and his national security team are huddled around a conference table in the White House Situation Room, watching CIA director Leon Panetta narrate last Sunday's raid on Osama bin Laden's compound. The mood is clearly tense. When Women's Wear Daily consulted a coterie of photo editors and designers about why the image is "destined to be one for the history books," Clinton was foremost in their responses. "The Hillary Clinton expression is ...

Japan detects radiation up to 700 milliserverts at Fukushima nuke plant

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) on Monday detected radiation levels in the building housing the faltering No. 1 reactor that far exceeded expected levels reaching as high as 700 millisieverts per hour, the utility firm said. The latest readings for the troubled reactor has lead Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency to embark on new radiation shielding measures so that work to bring the crisis under control can go ahead with risks of massive doses of deadly radiation poisoning hopefully being lessened for the TEPCO workers and their affiliates as they attempt to embark on a massive project to install a nuclear fuel cooling system. TEPCO is currently mulling ideas to protect ...

Analysis: Sony woes may cause some to rethink cloud computing

The Sony data breach that compromised the personal data of more than 100 million customers of the Japanese electronics conglomerate may claim yet another victim -- the cloud computing industry. Some businesses are rethinking plans to move to cloud-based computer systems located at remote data centers that can be accessed over the web. Shares of companies that specialize in cloud computing have been some of top-performing stocks over the past year. But the attack on Sony, as well as a massive outage at Amazon.com Inc's cloud computing center, have caused some businesses to put the brakes on plans to move their operations into the cloud. "Nobody is secure. Sony is just the tip of ...

With bin Laden's death, Netanyahu will face Obama the American hero
Post Date: 2011-05-09 13:54:04 by Ferret Mike

The assassination of Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has transformed U.S. President Barack Obama from a loser to an American hero overnight. In the zero-sum game between him and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that's being played on the Israeli-Palestinian-American arena, this is bad news for Bibi. Netanyahu has been counting on giving his speech in Washington in three weeks to a strong U.S. Congress, contrasted with a president who was consistently losing ground in public opinion polls, in the media and even within the Democratic Party. On Sunday, Netanyahu rushed to be associated with Obama the winner; in the aquarium of the war on terror, Netanyahu swims like a fish. Until he ...

Eurozone finance ministers are battling this weekend to contain a mounting sense of crisis about the future of the single currency as details emerge of secret talks on restructuring Greece's debts. Analysts expect a sharp sell-off of the euro when markets open tomorrow morning, as investors digest the fallout from reports – swiftly scotched – that Greece was considering leaving the eurozone. "Perhaps we have crossed a rubicon," said Jonathan Loynes, European economist at Capital Economics. "The knee-jerk response will probably be to push the euro lower. I believe the euro should be at parity with the dollar, not at $1.44 ...

U.S. Targeted Awlaki in Missile Strike

A U.S. drone strike in Yemen Thursday was aimed at killing Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born radical cleric who is suspected of orchestrating terrorist attacks on the U.S, but the missile missed its target, according to Yemeni and U.S. officials. V The drone strike comes less than a week after a U.S. Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden at a compound in Pakistan. Had the drone strike in Yemen been successful, the U.S. would have killed two of the top three most-wanted terrorists in a single week. Mr. Awlaki has emerged as the charismatic frontman of an al Qaeda branch based in Yemen, which the U.S. considers the most active terror group in the world. With bin Laden's death, some ...

It could be argued that Osama bin Laden is roasting in hell right now largely despite, not because of, Barack Obama. Had Obama gotten his way, the world would likely have watched a far different spectacle play out in lower Manhattan on Thursday: the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, rather than an Obama photo-op, 'spiking the football' at the death of Osama bin Laden. Perhaps more than any other person, Obama was responsible for efforts to hinder policies which led to bin Laden's assassination. Or, in words that won't offend our liberal friends, bin Laden's sudden cessation of life-related activities. The Obamamedia is already busy scrubbing history of Bush ...
