Ronald Reagan -- Pointe de Hoc, Normandy, June 6, 1984 (The 40th anniversary of D-Day) We're here to mark that day in history when the Allied peoples joined in battle to reclaim this continent to liberty. For four long years, much of Europe had been under a terrible shadow. Free nations had fallen, Jews cried out in the camps, millions cried out for liberation. Europe was enslaved, and the world prayed for its rescue. Here in Normandy the rescue began. Here the Allies stood and fought against tyranny in a giant undertaking unparalleled in human history. We stand on a lonely, windswept point on the northern shore of France. The air is soft, but forty years ago at this moment, the air ...

Today is the 67th anniversary of the Anglo-American landings at Normandy on D-Day. Like a well told tale, the invasion of France has become lore. Movies such as Saving Private Ryan and the HBO series Band of Brothers provide a reference point to the violence of war. But as we watch these scenes, we are all Monday morning quarterbacks; knowing how history played out, and that the sacrifices on the field of battle cumulatively led to victory. But the people fighting those battles six decades ago didnt know that. For them, how the war would end was very much an open question. How they acted and what they did, was the ultimate tool of decision. Indeed, at ...

UK Spies to Terrorists: Make Cupcakes Not War Post Date: 2011-06-04 16:55:30 by Mad Dog

LONDON - Britain's spy agencies have a new message for terrorists: make cupcakes, not war. Intelligence agents managed to hack into the extremist Inspire magazine, replacing its bombmaking instructions with a recipe for cupcakes. It's the first time the agents sabotaged the English-language magazine linked to U.S.-born Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, an extremist accused in several recent terror plots. The quarterly online magazine, which is sent to websites and email addresses as a pdf file, had offered an original page titled "Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom" in one of its editions last year. The magazine's pages were corrupted, however, and the instructions ...

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Friday repeated his assertion that there will be no tranquility in the Middle East as long as Tehran's archenemy, Israel, continues to exist. "As long as the Zionist regime exists, if only on a small piece of land in Palestine, the region will not see tranquility" he said to a crowd gathered at the mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini on the eve of the 22nd anniversary of the revolutionary leader's death. "So all the people of the region shall move towards the disappearance of American domination in the region and the disappearance of the Zionist regime," Ahmadinejad said in the speech, which was broadcast ...

We need to be honest with the president, with the Congress, with the American people about the consequences of cutting the defense budget, said Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in his valedictory policy address to the American Enterprise Institute. (A) smaller military, no matter how superb, will be able to go fewer places and do fewer things. Gates seeks to ignite a debate the country seems reluctant to have. With a federal budget running out of balance by 10 percent of gross domestic product, what are we Americans willing to sacrifice? What are we willing to forego? What are we willing to cut? The biggest budget items are Social Security, Medicare and defense. ...

Dozens of right-wing activists marching through Jerusalem Wednesday were filmed chanting inflammatory messages and singing provocative songs in the capital, including Muhammad is dead, May your village burn, Death to leftists, and Butcher the Arabs. The disturbing utterances were made during the traditional Flag Dance on the occasion of Jerusalem Day, which drew tens of thousands of Israelis to the capital to celebrate its unification following the 1967 Six-Day War. The offensive chants and songs can be clearly heard in the video, filmed by members of the Sheikh Jarrah Solidarity Movement. Elsewhere, Arab residents hurled stones ...

As the U.S. economy starts to slow down once again, global financial markets are beginning to tremble. Over the past couple of weeks, all kinds of bad economic news has been pouring in. The ADP jobs report was a "disaster", the housing numbers are dismal, manufacturing has slowed way down and consumer confidence is dropping like a rock. The Democrats and the Republicans are bickering over the debt ceiling and this is causing a lot of uncertainty as well. All of this bad news is starting to spook investors. On Wednesday, the Dow was down 279 points and the NASDAQ was down 65 points. It was the worst day of the year for the Dow, and many are wondering what is going to happen next if ...

Tel Aviv - The revelations could hardly be more embarrassing. One of Israel's biggest, richest conglomerates is linked with trade to the Jewish state's arch enemy, the Islamic Republic of Iran. Ofer Group Holdings, a giant privately-owned group, which owns and operates a large maritime fleet, and is also active in real estate, banking, and high tech, was named by the US State Department as having sanctions slapped on it for its role in the September 2010 sale of a tanker valued at 8.65 million dollars to the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL.) Also targeted for sanctions was Tanker Pacific, which a state Department spokesman said was a subsidiary of Ofer Group ...

The Skilled Veterans Corps, as they call themselves, is made up of retired engineers and other professionals, all over the age of 60. They say they should be facing the dangers of radiation, not the young. It was while watching the television news that Yasuteru Yamada decided it was time for his generation to stand up. A former senior member of the CIA has claimed David Cameron and Barack Obama "don't have a clue" about dealing with the war on terror. At the Hay Festival in Powys, Michael Scheuer, ex-head of the CIA's Bin Laden unit, said the conflict in the Middle East was caused by US foreign policy. He said extremists had no interest in western culture, but hatred stemmed from action in places like Afghanistan. Asked what advice he would give Mr Obama, he said to "tell the truth". Speaking on the fourth day of the Hay-on-Wye Festival, Mr Scheuer said: "American politicians, and I'm afraid listening to Mr Cameron this week, there's not a clue about what's ...

Lech Walesa WASHINGTON -- President Obama wraps up his European tour in Poland today, but he won't find any solidarity with the nation's one-time leader. Lech Walesa, the former Polish president and Solidarity movement founder, snubbed Obama on the last day of his four-nation trip, refusing to meet with his fellow Nobel Peace Prize winner. "I expect this meeting would only amount to a photo opportunity," Walesa, the heroic figure who helped lead his country to freedom from the Soviet bloc, told Agence France-Presse. "It's difficult to tell journalists what you'd like to say to the president of a superpower. This time, I won't tell him, I won't meet ...

President Obama is in Europe, supposedly trying to dissuade the Europeans from participating in the Palestinians attempt to gain statehood without offering peace to Israel. At his press conference he, no surprise to his critics, revealed he really doesnt have a clue how to proceed when he described the major issues between the parties: One is the issue of what would the territorial boundaries of a new Palestinian state look like. Number two: how could Israel feel confident that its security needs would be met? Number three: how would the issue of Palestinian refugees be resolved; and number four, the issue of Jerusalem. The last two questions are extraordinarily emotional. They ...

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said Thursday that it is a gross overstatement to suggest that President Obama did serious damage to his support from Jewish voters when he proposed last week that Israels 1967 borders should be the starting point for peace talks with Palestinians. She also lashed out at a Republican Jewish organization that has been critical of her, denouncing what she said was the groups decision to put partisanship ahead of its support for Israel. Wasserman Schultz, the first Jewish woman to represent Florida in Congress, acknowledged that Obamas speech had caused some damage with Jewish voters, but she ...

Since some of you think I am Destro, I found a recent posting of his and I think it is rather genius if I do say so myself. Destro: My compromise idea for solving the Israeli-Palestinian "Right of Return". First for a background read Palestinian right of return The problem in a nutshell is that Israel will not allow the almost 1 million Palestinian Arabs to return to Israel no matter what the border agreement is reached. Israeli negotiations have proposed a compromise where the compensate the Arabs for the theft of their property (financed by the USA and Europe?). The Arabs will have none of that and in fact have the recent ruling of international law on their side when ...

No Dog in That Fight, Mr President? By Christopher Chantrill Scott Johnson at Powerline, like many others, was unimpressed with President Obama's May 29 Mideast speech. The president fails "to distinguish properly between friends and enemies," he wrote. Let us drive a little deeper and ask a question. Why would the president announce in his speech, before negotiations had even started between Israel and the Palestinians, that he believed "the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps"? To put his unilateral concession--what our labor union friends would call a "give-back"--in perspective, let us ask ...

NEW DELHI (AP) -- More and more Indian families with one girl are aborting subsequent pregnancies when prenatal tests show another female is on the way, according to a new study. The decline in the number of girls is more pronounced in richer and better educated households, according to research published Tuesday in the medical journal Lancet. Those numbers show that a 1996 law that bans testing for the gender of a fetus has been largely ineffective, the study said. In India, there is a huge cultural preference for boys in large part because of the enormous expense in marrying off girls and paying elaborate dowries. Officials have acknowledged that current laws have proved inadequate at ...

It's a car that has been built to withstand bullets and grenade attacks - but US President Barack Obama's limousine, it seems, can't handle bumpy driveways. The low-riding, six-metre-long Cadillac became stuck on a section of ramp while trying to exit the US embassy during the President's tour of Ireland yesterday. The General Motors-built limo, which is nicknamed "The Beast" and weighs several tonnes more than a regular car due to the layers of protective shielding built into its panels, scraped to a halt in front of a crowd of spectators. Video shot by members of the crowd shows the car crunching to a stop, with the crowd collectively gasping as the car ...
