Pakistan's intelligence agency has arrested a person who rented a safe house to the CIA before American special forces killed Osama bin Laden, as well as suspected CIA informants, a source familiar with the arrests told CNN Wednesday. A second official confirmed that Pakistan had detained informants who gave information to the CIA before the raid but said he did not know the exact number of people arrested or when it happened. The revelations, first reported by The New York Times, are likely to further strain what has become a rocky relationship between the two countries. Click for Full Text!

Obama Ignores Implications of Hamas-Fatah Government

Obama Ignores Implications of Hamas-Fatah Government Jonathan S. Tobin 06.14.2011 - 4:30 PM Last week, the Obama administration resumed its attempt to pressure Israel into agreeing to the 1967 lines as the starting point for future peace talks. This point, like previous disputes with Obama over Jerusalem and settlement freezes, is intended to entice the Palestinians to return to peace talks. But while Washington obsesses over its attempt to hammer the Netanyahu government into submission, few here are paying attention to a much more important story: the way the Hamas-Fatah unity pact is transforming Palestinian politics. As the Jerusalem Post reports today, those who expected Hamas ...

Netanyahu's Trap For America

There is no likelihood that the US will do the logical thing and vote for Palestinian statehood in the UN this fall. The US position will remain that peace will only come from the two parties with the US or the Quartet facilitating. But at this point, hasn't that option been totally played out? When the US exercises even a smidgen of even-handedness, as in Obama's recent speech, the pro-Israel fanatics have a cow. They have a cow every time Obama deviates from the hardest Israeli line of the moment. After two and a half years, it is clear this is going nowhere, apart from a consolidation of Israel's grip on the West Bank, the continued humiliation of the American president, and ...

New Egypt? 7K civilians jailed since Mubarak fell By Mohannad Sabry | McClatchy Newspapers CAIRO — Egypt's military rulers told human rights advocates Monday that at least 7,000 civilians have been sentenced to prison terms by military courts since Hosni Mubarak was ousted — an astoundingly high number likely to fuel debate over how much the revolution has changed the country. Advocates said the military promised to review the cases and vacate any improper guilty verdicts and commute the sentences. But the advocates voiced skepticism and demanded more information about civilians in military custody. "This is not the first time they've promised," said Mona ...

Amtrak touts 'international peer review' of high-speed rail plans

The national passenger rail service, better known as Amtrak, said Monday that rail companies in Europe and Japan said its plans to build high-speed railways in the Northeast were sound. The foreign opinions, which Amtrak dubbed an "international peer review," comes as Republicans in the House are pushing to plan to privatize rail service in the Northeast. The chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has frequently referred to Amtrak as a "Soviet-style operation," but the agency said Monday that "leading European and Japanese high-speed rail operators" found Amtrak's assessment that it can gradually get trains up to 220 miles per ...

A Goodyear blimp burst into flames and plunged to earth in a weekend crash in Germany. The pilot was killed but three passengers managed to jump to safety when the airship caught fire as it was coming in to land at the Reichelsheim aerodrome near Friedberg. When the airship was just six metres from the floor, the pilot told his passengers, all journalists, to jump to the ground while he tried to land safely. Once the three had leapt clear of the blimp he took it back up before being it became overwhelmed by flames and crashed to the earth, in a chilling echo of the Hindenburg disaster. Study finds global warming over past 400 years was due to increased Solar activity

Apparently previous studies of the sun-climate connection looked at the equatorial polar magnetic field which produces sun spots, but they did not consider the polar magnetic component of the solar dynamo. The polar fields are less strong than the equatorial fields, but it is claimed that the total magnetic fluxes of both fields are comparable. With proxy data they derive an empirical relation between tropospherical temperatures and solar equatorial and polar magnetic fields. The polar field could contribute about 30% as much as the equatorial field. The paper, published in the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics focused on the period 1844-1960 (but extended at least one ...

German Court Rejects Demjanjuk Extradition Request

(JTA) -- A German court denied a request to extradite John Demjanjuk to Spain to stand trial on charges of being an accessory to genocide and crimes against humanity. In denying the extradition request on June 9, the Munich court questioned Spain's jurisdiction in the case and also noted that the evidence presented against Demjanjuk was incomplete. The Supreme Court of Spain had indicted Demjanjuk, 91, in January and requested an international arrest warrant for the former Cleveland-area autoworker. Demjanjuk was accused of being responsible for the deaths of 50 of 155 Spanish prisoners in the German concentration camp Flossenburg. He was charged in Spain under the country's ...

Ilan Grapel, the alleged Mossad agent arrested on Sunday in Egypt, is an American citizen who served in the IDF Paratrooper’s Brigade during the Second Lebanon War and interned last summer at the Israeli Supreme Court. Grapel, originally from New York, moved to Israel after graduating from John Hopkins University in the US and enlisted in the IDF. He was wounded during fighting against Hezbollah guerillas in the southern Lebanese town of Taibe in August, 2006. In an interview to the New York Daily News in 2006, Irene Grapel said her son decided to enlist in the IDF since he "didn't want a boring life" and craved some adventure before enrolling in graduate school. TEHRAN, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi said Sunday that Israel should join the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and accept the watch and inspection of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) into its nuclear establishments. Addressing the opening ceremony of an international nuclear disarmament conference in Tehran on Sunday, Salehi said Israel is the only obstacle to creating a Middle East free of nuclear weapons. In order to establish stability in the Middle East region, the global community should push Israel to join NPT and make it accept the watch and inspection of IAEA into its nuclear facilities, he said. Israel possesses different kinds ...

Vietnam seeks US support in China dispute

Vietnam has called on the US and other nations to help resolve the escalating territorial disputes in the resource-rich South China Sea, in a move likely to anger Beijing, which opposes what it sees as outside interference. Tensions between China and Vietnam continued to rise over the weekend, ahead of live-fire drills planned by Vietnam’s navy on Monday on an islet around 20 miles from the coast of central Vietnam, which Hanoi described as “routine”. Stirred by a number of maritime confrontations with China over recent weeks, hundreds of Vietnamese took part in rare anti-China protests on Sunday for the second straight weekend, with the usually draconian police allowing ...

Sen. Lindsey Graham: Now Is The Time To Take Action In Syria

(CBS News) Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on Sunday called for increased U.S. action in Syria, and said "now is the time to let [Syrian president Bashar] Assad know that all options are the table" - including the possible use of military force. Graham, in an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation," decried what he described as the Assad regime's "wholesale slaughter" against the Syrian people, and urged the U.S. to take a similar approach in that nation as it has in Libya in seeking the ouster of Muammar Qaddafi. It's time, Graham contended, to "get the regional partners to tell the Assad he has to go. And put everything on the table - including ...

Reporting from Washington— In a blow to Al Qaeda's efforts to control havens in East Africa, the Al Qaeda operative believed responsible for the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya has been gunned down by Somali security forces, U.S. officials said Saturday. The killing of Fazul Abdullah Mohammed is another major loss for the terrorist organization after the death of Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden in Pakistan six weeks ago. Mohammed was an experienced operational planner who played a major role in persuading African militant groups involved in local insurrections to join Al Qaeda's global fight, U.S. officials and experts said. Phil Giraldi Spills Beans on Israeli Espionage in America

Phil Giraldi stepped out today to do his country a great service and save some honor for the American counter intelligence community. He put the spotlight  on America’s greatest national security scandal, the decades old investment that Israeli Intelligence has made in attacking its so called America ally by stealing everything it can get it’s hands on. But there is a second darker side to this first betrayal, and that is their corruption of our own political, Justice and State Department organs to literally act as protectors for them. As a group they have betrayed the American people, and all those involved should receive long prison sentences for high treason. Why would ...

ONe More Definition of Insanity: Croatia Given Conditional Approval to Join E.U. in 2013

LONDON — After six arduous years of talks on its bid for European Union membership, Croatia was told Friday that it should be able to join in 2013, but that its efforts to combat corruption and reform its judiciary will be monitored in the meantime in case they slip. Held back for years by its failure to cooperate fully in the prosecution of war crimes suspects, Croatia was then pressed by the E.U. to make a host of changes, including reforms to its judicial system. On Friday it was judged to have finally met entry requirements, furthering the quest for it to become the 28th E.U. state — providing the bloc’s 27 nations agree to that timetable. But the continuing regime of ...

Col. Margaret Thatcher's 'Sarah Palin snub' enrages US right

ush Limbaugh, the talk show host, denounced the suggestion that the former Prime Minister might take a dim view of Mrs Palin as “preposterous”. Other supporters of the likely presidential candidate complained online that Lady Thatcher’s aides had “disgraced” her. Mrs Palin, the darling of the right wing Tea Party, has described Margaret Thatcher as one of her “political heroines” and repeatedly expressed her desire for a meeting. She disclosed recently that she is planning to stop off in London on her way to Sudan later this summer and said she hoped to arrange an interview. A photo opportunity with Lady Thatcher could help earn Mrs Palin important ...

REUTERS: Clinton In Talks About Possible Move To World Bank

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been in discussions with the White House about leaving her job next year to become head of the World Bank, sources familiar with the discussions said on Thursday. The former first lady and onetime political rival to President Barack Obama quickly became one of the most influential members of his Cabinet after she began her tenure at State in early 2009. She has said publicly she did not plan to stay on at the State Department for more than four years. Associates say Clinton has expressed interest in having the World Bank job should the bank's current president, Robert Zoellick, leave at the end of his term, in the middle ...

WASHINGTON - As he mulls how many U.S. troops to pull out of Afghanistan starting next month, President Obama is coming under increasing pressure from Democratic lawmakers as well as a growing number of Republicans to reexamine his war strategy after the killing of Osama bin Laden. The president's nominee to be the new U.S. ambassador to Kabul, veteran diplomat Ryan Crocker, felt the heat Wednesday. Senate Foreign Relations Committee members of both parties used Crocker's confirmation hearing to vent frustration with the persistent violence in Afghanistan nearly a decade after the U.S. invasion, and to question the size of the U.S. military contingent there and what nearly $19 ...

We know of at least one Chicago rapper who won't be getting an invite to the White House anytime soon. Lupe Fiasco called out President Barack Obama this week, calling his fellow Chicagoan "the biggest terrorist." The comments came in an interview with CBS News Tuesday while discussing the political content of his music. "My fight against terrorism, to me, the biggest terrorist is Obama in the United States of America. I'm trying to fight the terrorism that's actually causing the other forms of terrorism. You know, the root cause of terrorism is the stuff the U.S. government allows to happen. The foreign policies that we have in place in different countries ...

The U.S. is "playing with fire" over its debt ceiling debate and, "there is a risk a U.S. debt default may happen," according to Chinese central bank advisor Li Daokui. Speaking at a conference in Beijing, Daokui said, according to Reuters: "If a default happens, the Chinese government should have a consultation with the U.S. government. China can promise that we will not sell our holdings of U.S. debt, but the United States must also promise that you will not hurt our interests by guaranteeing the safety of our investment... I really worry about the risks of a U.S. debt default, which I think may lead to a decline in the dollar's value." This is the first ...

TEHRAN | Wed Jun 8, 2011 9:07am EDT (Reuters) - Iran will shift its production of higher grade uranium to an underground bunker and triple its production capacity, it said on Wednesday in a defiant response to accusations it is trying to produce atomic bombs. "This year, under the supervision of the (International Atomic Energy) Agency, we will transfer 20 percent enrichment from the Natanz site to the Fordow site and we will increase the production capacity by three times," the head of Iran's atomic energy agency, Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, told reporters after a cabinet meeting, the state broadcaster IRIB reported. Allies of former prime minister regard darling of Tea Party movement as a frivolous figure unworthy of an audience Sarah Palin wants to show to the Republican right that she is the true keeper of the Ronald Reagan flame by meeting the late president's closest ally on the world stage. A meeting with Margaret Thatcher in the centenary year of Reagan's birth would be the perfect way of launching her bid for the Republican nomination for the 2012 US presidential election. This is what Palin told Christina Lamb in the Sunday Times: I am going to Sudan in July and hope to stop in England on the way. I am just hoping Mrs Thatcher is well enough to see me as I so admire her. It ...
