WASHINGTON (JTA) -- U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin said supporters of Israel must be prepared for a U.N. General Assembly vote recognizing a Palestinian state in September, saying the Palestinians have "the upper hand" in pushing through such a resolution. The Palestinians have a solid bloc of allies in the General Assembly, whereas the measure likely will not pass if brought before the U.N. Security Council, Cardin (D-Md.) said Wednesday during a speech at a conference here on the Middle East sponsored by The Israel Project. "We have to be prepared for a U.N. vote that is negative," Cardin said. "There will be consequences." Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) echoed ...

"For at least two years, the U.S. has been conducting a secretive and immensely sophisticated campaign of mass surveillance and data mining against the Arab world, allowing the intelligence community to monitor the habits, conversations, and activity of millions of individuals at once," Brown wrote. JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Egypt has relaunched its investigation into Ilan Grapel, the dual U.S.-Israeli citizen arrested in Egypt on spying charges. The investigation into Grapel was suspended after his first attorney resigned last week, but it was relaunched on Tuesday. Grapel is being interrogated without the assistance of an interpreter because he speaks Arabic fluently, the Egyptian newspaper al-Masri al-Youm reported Wednesday. Grapel has faced his eighth interrogation since being arrested earlier this month at his hotel in central Cairo for allegedly spying on Egypt. Grapel is accused of being an Israeli Mossad agent. Egyptian security officials said he entered the country shortly after ...

United States President Barack Obama's special assistant, Dennis Ross said Wednesday that bold steps need to be taken to make sure that Israel remains a Jewish Democratic state, but emphasized that no one can force an agreement on Israel and the Palestinians. Speaking at the Presidential Conference in Jerusalem, Ross said the greatest danger Israel faces today is sitting aside and waiting for something to happen. In order to stop the delegitimization of Israel in the world, Ross said that Israel must return to the negotiating table. Ross and U.S. diplomat David Hale are due to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his advisers to push for the renewal of Mideast peace talks. ...

First the good news: U.S. President Barack Obama is more than twice as popular in Egypt as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadenijad. Now, the bad news: the American president's standing has never been worse in Egypt, plummeting since 2008, when he received a 25 percent favorability rating, to 12 percent in 2011. Even Osama Bin Laden, the late al Qaeda leader, was more popular this year, with a 21 percent favorability ranking. The Iranian leader fared worse, dropping from 21 percent favorability rating in 2008 to a miserable 5 percent. The findings are drawn from a public poll of Egyptian views in the aftermath of the public uprising that brought about the resignation of Egypt's ...

As CEO of the federal government, the president, Barack Hussein Obama, bears ultimate responsibility for the Gunrunning scandal perpetrated by the Justice Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Let's use the yardstick Obama himself used when he blamed bank and corporate CEOs for the recession. By that yardstick, Obama must take the blame for the ATF gun scandal. The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearings on activities of the Justice Department and its ATF reveal the scandalous behavior of Obama's government. Now, though, it appears the Obama administration is about to dump certain ATF bureaucrats, blaming the whole scandal on ...

MOSCOW Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday he wanted a second Kremlin term but it was still early to say whether he would run for re-election in 2012, noting he could not imagine competing with Vladimir Putin. With just nine months left before Russians will go to polls to elect a new president, neither Medvedev, 45, nor his mentor Prime Minister Putin, 58, have put forth an official bid to run amid intensifying claims from businesses and observers that the continuing uncertainty was hurting Russia's investment climate. "I will tell you one thing: I believe that any leader who holds the post of president simply must want to run. "Another issue is whether ...

The White House had spurned requests by Israel to let Jonathan Pollard visit his father before he died Saturday. Morris Pollard was buried Monday in Mishawaka, Ind., without his son present. The only mention of Jonathan Pollard during the graveside service was when his sister said one of their father's few regrets was "not being able to help his son achieve freedom." Pollard has been in prison in the U.S. since 1985 and was sentenced to life in prison two years later. The elder Pollard was a retired biology professor at the University of Notre Dame and was 95 when he died.

Somehow this feels like a Vonnegut plotline: population boom equals food shortage. Solution? Synthesize food from human waste matter. Absurd yes, but Japanese scientists have actually discovered a way to create edible steaks from human feces. Mitsuyuki Ikeda, a researcher from the Okayama Laboratory, has developed steaks based on proteins from human excrement. Tokyo Sewage approached the scientist because of an overabundance of sewage mud. They asked him to explore the possible uses of the sewage and Ikeda found that the mud contained a great deal of protein because of all the bacteria. The researchers then extracted those proteins, combined them with a reaction enhancer and put it in an ...

(Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund cut its forecast for U.S. economic growth on Friday and warned Washington and debt-ridden European countries that they are "playing with fire" unless they take immediate steps to reduce their budget deficits. The IMF, in its regular assessment of global economic prospects, said bigger threats to growth had emerged since its previous report in April, citing the euro zone debt crisis and signs of overheating in emerging market economies. The Washington-based global lender forecast that U.S. gross domestic product would grow a tepid 2.5 percent this year and 2.7 percent in 2012. In its forecast just two months ago, it had expected 2.8 ...

The candidates' second thoughts about Afghanistan and other foreign adventures. First impressions from a presidential debate are always about how things look, how people come across. Tim Pawlenty doesn't really assert, he natters. Rick Santorum is earnest, Michelle Bachmann serious. Mitt Romney knows how he looks in every camera shot from every angle: He is a master of the cutaway shot, when the camera isn't on him. He keeps his posture and maintains a kindly smile, as if he's pleased the other candidate are sharing their nice little thoughts. But the GOP debate in New Hampshire was a big success in two ways. First, there was no obvious candidate from Crazytown, which was ...

The operator of the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant has announced plans to construct a shroud over one of the reactor buildings, a stop-gap measure until a more permanent solution can be found, such as entombing the facility in concrete. A similar concrete sarcophagus was built over the remains of the reactors at the Chernobyl power plant after that facility was destroyed in an accident in April 1986. Tokyo Electric Power Co. will start the construction of a rigid steel frame over the No. 1 reactor on June 27, Yoshikazu Nagai, a spokesman for the company, said. A hydrogen explosion destroyed the walls and roof of the reactor building on March 12, the day after the cooling system was ...

SHARKS ENTHUSIASTS HAVE USED fish guts to attract great white sharks for years, but it seems the fearsome creatures may be attracted to something more pleasing to their ears: music from Australian rock band AC/DC. Matt Waller, a tour operator in South Australia's Neptune Bay, has observed that when sharks hear the band's hits, especially Shook Me All Night Long and Back in Black, they are drawn to the source of the music. Matt's research was inspired by dive operators on Guadalupe Island, who discovered playing music underwater for clients also caused changes in shark behaviour. He and his company, Adventure Bay Charters, decided to do some experimenting of their own. Using ...

Hard-line Israelis reject the idea of reasonable compromises for peace, arguing that any significant concessions to Palestinian sovereignty would threaten Israels security or the Zionist cause, but Lawrence Davidson notes that demographic trends, including a growing Jewish exodus from Israel, could have far worse consequences. By Lawrence Davidson June 15, 2011 If the historical goal of the state of Israel is to provide the worlds Jews a secure national home, a place of refuge in a world of real or potential anti-Semitism, it seems to have failed. It has failed not because this writer says so, but because an increasing number of its own Jewish citizens say so. There have been ...
