JAPAN: How to turn human shit into tastey steak
Post Date: 2011-06-19 10:20:29 by A K A Stone

Somehow this feels like a Vonnegut plotline: population boom equals food shortage. Solution? Synthesize food from human waste matter. Absurd yes, but Japanese scientists have actually discovered a way to create edible steaks from human feces. Mitsuyuki Ikeda, a researcher from the Okayama Laboratory, has developed steaks based on proteins from human excrement. Tokyo Sewage approached the scientist because of an overabundance of sewage mud. They asked him to explore the possible uses of the sewage and Ikeda found that the mud contained a great deal of protein because of all the bacteria. The researchers then extracted those proteins, combined them with a reaction enhancer and put it in an ...

(Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund cut its forecast for U.S. economic growth on Friday and warned Washington and debt-ridden European countries that they are "playing with fire" unless they take immediate steps to reduce their budget deficits. The IMF, in its regular assessment of global economic prospects, said bigger threats to growth had emerged since its previous report in April, citing the euro zone debt crisis and signs of overheating in emerging market economies. The Washington-based global lender forecast that U.S. gross domestic product would grow a tepid 2.5 percent this year and 2.7 percent in 2012. In its forecast just two months ago, it had expected 2.8 ...

An al-Qaida-linked website has posted a potential hit list of targets that include names and photos of several U.S. officials and business leaders, calling for terrorists to target these Americans in their own homes, NBC New York has learned. The FBI has sent out a new intelligence bulletin to law enforcement agencies, warning that this new web-based threat, while not a specific plot, is very detailed. The bulletin said the list includes leaders "in government, industry and media." The FBI has notified those individuals who are named. NBC New York will not identify them or their companies. The list includes Wall Street firms, political leaders, leaders with think tanks and ...

The candidates' second thoughts about Afghanistan and other foreign adventures. First impressions from a presidential debate are always about how things look, how people come across. Tim Pawlenty doesn't really assert, he natters. Rick Santorum is earnest, Michelle Bachmann serious. He keeps his posture and maintains a kindly smile, as if he's pleased the other candidate are sharing their nice little thoughts. But the GOP debate in New Hampshire was a big success in two ways. Japan: Tepco to build sarcophagus over Fukushima reactor

The operator of the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant has announced plans to construct a shroud over one of the reactor buildings, a stop-gap measure until a more permanent solution can be found, such as entombing the facility in concrete. A similar concrete sarcophagus was built over the remains of the reactors at the Chernobyl power plant after that facility was destroyed in an accident in April 1986. Tokyo Electric Power Co. will start the construction of a rigid steel frame over the No. 1 reactor on June 27, Yoshikazu Nagai, a spokesman for the company, said. A hydrogen explosion destroyed the walls and roof of the reactor building on March 12, the day after the cooling system was ...

DUBAI (AFP) – Al-Qaeda on Thursday named its second in command Ayman al-Zawahiri to succeed slain chief Osama bin Laden and vowed to relentlessly pursue its "jihad' against the United States and Israel. "The general command of Al-Qaeda announces, after consultations, the appointment of Sheikh Ayman al-Zawahiri as head of the group," the jihadist network said in statement posted on an Islamist website. Egyptian Zawahiri, the group's long-time number two, succeeds bin Laden who was killed by US commandos in a May 2 raid in Pakistan. The statement said that under Zawahiri's leadership Al-Qaeda would relentlessly pursue its 'jihad' (holy war) against ...

Great white sharks attracted by AC/DC hits

SHARKS ENTHUSIASTS HAVE USED fish guts to attract great white sharks for years, but it seems the fearsome creatures may be attracted to something more pleasing to their ears: music from Australian rock band AC/DC. Matt Waller, a tour operator in South Australia's Neptune Bay, has observed that when sharks hear the band's hits, especially Shook Me All Night Long and Back in Black, they are drawn to the source of the music. Matt's research was inspired by dive operators on Guadalupe Island, who discovered playing music underwater for clients also caused changes in shark behaviour. He and his company, Adventure Bay Charters, decided to do some experimenting of their own. Using ...

The European Union justice mission in Kosovo announced Monday that Yusuf Sonmez of Turkey and Israel's Moshe Harel were charged last week with trafficking in persons, unlawful medical activity and organized crime. The two are considered fugitives and Interpol has issued warrants for their arrests. The indictments are part of a larger investigation into allegations that an organized criminal group conducted operations in a clinic outside the capital Pristina, transplanting illegally harvested organs. Mwau recently spoke to journalists from Kenya’s Sunday Nation newspaper, saying: “The US government knows that I have interests in a chain of businesses, especially in supermarkets. Israel’s Jewish Exodus

Hard-line Israelis reject the idea of reasonable compromises for peace, arguing that any significant concessions to Palestinian sovereignty would threaten Israel’s security or the Zionist cause, but Lawrence Davidson notes that demographic trends, including a growing Jewish exodus from Israel, could have far worse consequences. By Lawrence Davidson June 15, 2011 If the historical goal of the state of Israel is to provide the world’s Jews a secure national home, a place of refuge in a world of real or potential anti-Semitism, it seems to have failed. It has failed not because this writer says so, but because an increasing number of its own Jewish citizens say so. There have been ...

(Reuters) - Russia won the backing of China and other members of a regional security body in criticizing U.S. plans for a missile shield, saying on Wednesday it could undermine global security. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a security bloc grouping Russia, China and four ex-Soviet Central Asian states, signed a declaration condemning any unilateral build-up of missile defenses after their leaders met in the Kazakh capital. "The unilateral and unlimited build-up of missile defense by a single state or by a narrow group of states could damage strategic stability and international security," the six members of the SCO said in the declaration. Apart from regional ...

Pakistan's intelligence agency has arrested a person who rented a safe house to the CIA before American special forces killed Osama bin Laden, as well as suspected CIA informants, a source familiar with the arrests told CNN Wednesday. A second official confirmed that Pakistan had detained informants who gave information to the CIA before the raid but said he did not know the exact number of people arrested or when it happened. The revelations, first reported by The New York Times, are likely to further strain what has become a rocky relationship between the two countries. Click for Full Text!

Obama Ignores Implications of Hamas-Fatah Government Jonathan S. Tobin 06.14.2011 - 4:30 PM Last week, the Obama administration resumed its attempt to pressure Israel into agreeing to the 1967 lines as the starting point for future peace talks. This point, like previous disputes with Obama over Jerusalem and settlement freezes, is intended to entice the Palestinians to return to peace talks. But while Washington obsesses over its attempt to hammer the Netanyahu government into submission, few here are paying attention to a much more important story: the way the Hamas-Fatah unity pact is transforming Palestinian politics. As the Jerusalem Post reports today, those who expected Hamas ...

Netanyahu's Trap For America

There is no likelihood that the US will do the logical thing and vote for Palestinian statehood in the UN this fall. The US position will remain that peace will only come from the two parties with the US or the Quartet facilitating. But at this point, hasn't that option been totally played out? When the US exercises even a smidgen of even-handedness, as in Obama's recent speech, the pro-Israel fanatics have a cow. They have a cow every time Obama deviates from the hardest Israeli line of the moment. After two and a half years, it is clear this is going nowhere, apart from a consolidation of Israel's grip on the West Bank, the continued humiliation of the American president, and ...

New Egypt? 7K civilians jailed since Mubarak fell By Mohannad Sabry | McClatchy Newspapers CAIRO — Egypt's military rulers told human rights advocates Monday that at least 7,000 civilians have been sentenced to prison terms by military courts since Hosni Mubarak was ousted — an astoundingly high number likely to fuel debate over how much the revolution has changed the country. Advocates said the military promised to review the cases and vacate any improper guilty verdicts and commute the sentences. But the advocates voiced skepticism and demanded more information about civilians in military custody. "This is not the first time they've promised," said Mona ...

Amtrak touts 'international peer review' of high-speed rail plans

The national passenger rail service, better known as Amtrak, said Monday that rail companies in Europe and Japan said its plans to build high-speed railways in the Northeast were sound. The foreign opinions, which Amtrak dubbed an "international peer review," comes as Republicans in the House are pushing to plan to privatize rail service in the Northeast. The chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has frequently referred to Amtrak as a "Soviet-style operation," but the agency said Monday that "leading European and Japanese high-speed rail operators" found Amtrak's assessment that it can gradually get trains up to 220 miles per ...

A Goodyear blimp burst into flames and plunged to earth in a weekend crash in Germany. The pilot was killed but three passengers managed to jump to safety when the airship caught fire as it was coming in to land at the Reichelsheim aerodrome near Friedberg. When the airship was just six metres from the floor, the pilot told his passengers, all journalists, to jump to the ground while he tried to land safely. Once the three had leapt clear of the blimp he took it back up before being it became overwhelmed by flames and crashed to the earth, in a chilling echo of the Hindenburg disaster. Study finds global warming over past 400 years was due to increased Solar activity

Apparently previous studies of the sun-climate connection looked at the equatorial polar magnetic field which produces sun spots, but they did not consider the polar magnetic component of the solar dynamo. The polar fields are less strong than the equatorial fields, but it is claimed that the total magnetic fluxes of both fields are comparable. With proxy data they derive an empirical relation between tropospherical temperatures and solar equatorial and polar magnetic fields. The polar field could contribute about 30% as much as the equatorial field. The paper, published in the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics focused on the period 1844-1960 (but extended at least one ...

German Court Rejects Demjanjuk Extradition Request

(JTA) -- A German court denied a request to extradite John Demjanjuk to Spain to stand trial on charges of being an accessory to genocide and crimes against humanity. In denying the extradition request on June 9, the Munich court questioned Spain's jurisdiction in the case and also noted that the evidence presented against Demjanjuk was incomplete. The Supreme Court of Spain had indicted Demjanjuk, 91, in January and requested an international arrest warrant for the former Cleveland-area autoworker. Demjanjuk was accused of being responsible for the deaths of 50 of 155 Spanish prisoners in the German concentration camp Flossenburg. He was charged in Spain under the country's ...

TEHRAN, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi said Sunday that Israel should join the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and accept the watch and inspection of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) into its nuclear establishments. Addressing the opening ceremony of an international nuclear disarmament conference in Tehran on Sunday, Salehi said Israel is the only obstacle to creating a Middle East free of nuclear weapons. In order to establish stability in the Middle East region, the global community should push Israel to join NPT and make it accept the watch and inspection of IAEA into its nuclear facilities, he said.
