SYDNEY (MarketWatch) Asian equity markets plunged into deep losses Friday, with some indices tanking more than 4%, but strategists say the outlook for the region remains strong and that the market panic has even created some buying opportunities. You have to distinguish between what were seeing right now, which is periods of market panic, versus longer-term issues about growth, earnings and valuations, Russell Investments chief investment strategist for the Asia Pacific Andrew Pease said. By early Friday afternoon , Japans Nikkei Stock Average /quotes/zigman/715506 JP:NIK -3.72% had tumbled 3.6%, Hong Kongs Hang Seng /quotes/zigman/2622475 HK:HSI ...
Bush and Obama: Not a Dime's Worth of Difference Post Date: 2011-08-05 01:32:31 by jwpegler

Leon Panetta, the current Secretary of Defense, warned today that he would not accept large cuts in military spending as part of a deal to slow the increase in the government's debt. Penetta insisted that we need to borrow money from foreigners to bring the government's wars to "stable conclusions". Unfortunately, Penetta seems to be affected with the same type of delusions that plague most U.S. politicians. The government's wars in the Middle East are not going to come to a stable conclusion regardless of how much money we borrow from China to wage them. Regardless of when we leave Afghanistan -- next week or next year -- the Taliban will reassert their power. ...

The debate over global warming has intensified in recent weeks after a new NASA study was interpreted by skeptics to reveal that global warming is not man-made. While a majority of Americans nationwide continue to acknowledge significant disagreement about global warming in the scientific community, most go even further to say some scientists falsify data to support their own beliefs. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of American Adults shows that 69% say its at least somewhat likely that some scientists have falsified research data in order to support their own theories and beliefs, including 40% who say this is Very Likely. Twenty-two percent (22%) dont ...
“Solution” to The Debt Crisis: More Debt Post Date: 2011-08-04 18:51:17 by Capitalist Eric

It was 15-months ago that we projected that the second half of 2011 and onward would present many financial and economic problems, and we have not been disappointed. There was federal debt and its renewal, which we are now suffering through, municipal debt problems, the lack of any kind of solid recovery and financial problems emanating from Europe. Making the situation more difficult is the statistical exposure at Princeton University that more than $5 trillion has been spent since 9/11 to create new wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Pakistan, with more in the works. Running neck and neck has been the federal debt issue and the second bailout of Greece and its affect on the debt ...

He took 216 votes from the 246 deputies present in the 290-seat parliament. Iranian state media interpreted the vote as a reaction by Iran's ...

The Fiat Dollar & Debt Democracy Experiments Have Failed Post Date: 2011-08-03 17:15:35 by Capitalist Eric

Washington claims the federal debt limit extension and the threat of default is postponed. This is just more political theatre as the Treasury debt downgrade will happen and eventually a bankrupt America will attempt to inflate the debt away and default. It is the same across the Atlantic where the sovereign debt crisis still stalks the politicians in the EU. The political and economic reality of the sordid situation cannot be covered up by the establishment news hacks or by more lies or the blame game by either party. The Washington experiment of borrowing trillions to buy elections today to be paid for by future generations has failed in the US and across Europe. America's Ability ...
China Joins Russia in Blasting U.S. Borrowing After Debt Ceiling Agreement Post Date: 2011-08-03 11:09:42 by Brian S

China, the largest foreign investor in U.S. government securities, joined Russia in criticizing American policy makers for failing to ensure borrowing is reined in after a stopgap deal to raise the nations debt limit. Peoples Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan said Chinas central bank will monitor U.S. efforts to tackle its debt, and state-run Xinhua News Agency blasted what it called the madcap brinksmanship of American lawmakers. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said two days ago that the U.S. is in a way leeching on the world economy. The comments reflect concern that the U.S. may lose its AAA sovereign rating after President Barack ...
German Economy Starts to Cool Down Post Date: 2011-08-03 03:31:10 by socalv8

Is the party over for the German economy, which has been enjoying its strongest boom since reunification? Sentiment indicators and company forecasts point to a slowdown caused in part by weakening activity in China. Fears are also growing about the US outlook and the simmering euro debt crisis. Germany staged an impressive recovery from the 2008/2009 global economic crisis, but there are increasing signs that the boom is now coming to an end. After almost two years of strong growth, its economic outlook is starting to deteriorate, due to a slowdown in major emerging markets including China and fears of a possible United States recession caused by $2.4 trillion in spending cuts linked to ...
Obamas Idiotic Infographic Post Date: 2011-08-02 21:29:40 by CZ82

Obama's Idiotic Infographic By Peter Wilson President Obama has suggested in his last 147 television appearances that he inherited the national debt from President Bush, who squandered the Clinton surplus with his "tax cuts for the rich" and his unnecessary wars. Now someone at whitehouse.gov, apparently not an accountant or an economist, has put together an "infographic" that assigns hard numbers to these vague assertions, explaining in detail how "$12.7 Trillion [was] Added to the Debt Over the Last Decade." The graphic parts of the infographic are competent, and the White House logo looks spiffy, but the info part is entirely mendacious. The ...

(Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin accused the United States Monday of living beyond its means "like a parasite" on the global economy and said dollar dominance was a threat to the financial markets. "They are living beyond their means and shifting a part of the weight of their problems to the world economy," Putin told a Kremlin youth group while touring its summer camp north of Moscow. "They are living like parasites off the global economy and their monopoly of the dollar." President Barack Obama announced a last-ditch deal to cut about $2.4 trillion from the U.S. deficit over a decade, avoid a crushing debt default and stave off the risk ...

Cuba Encourages Capitalism While Marking the 58th Anniversary of the Start of Communism By Steve Harrigan, July 29, 2011 When Cuba marked its 58th anniversary of the start of the Communist Revolution this week, a key message from Vice President Jose Machado was that Cubans need to work harder. Machado, 81, who spoke for 25 minutes while President Raul Castro who attended the ceremony sat silent, blamed corruption and inertia for Cubas economic woes. In past years the holiday was marked by lengthy speeches from Fidel Castro lauding the revolution and attacking the U.S. government. But this year leaders of the island nation of more than 11 million people are trying to encourage ...

Engineers at the University of Southampton have designed and flown the worlds first printed aircraft, which could revolutionise the economics of aircraft design. The SULSA (Southampton University Laser Sintered Aircraft) plane is an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) whose entire structure has been printed, including wings, integral control surfaces and access hatches. It was printed on an EOS EOSINT P730 nylon laser sintering machine, which fabricates plastic or metal objects, building up the item layer by layer. No fasteners were used and all equipment was attached using snap fit techniques so that the entire aircraft can be put together without tools in minutes. ...
New American Ambassador To Try To Improve Israelis' View Of U.S. Post Date: 2011-07-31 12:42:39 by Brian S

Dan Shapiro, the new American ambassador to Israel, has two culinary loves. The first is Spam, the preserved lunch meat that comes in a can; its Israeli equivalent is Luf, a dish that should be familiar to anyone who has served in a combat unit here. One urban legend that has made the rounds in the White House tells of a dinner at the official residence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. According to legend, Shapiro, who then headed the Middle East division at the U.S. National Security Council, turned to Netanyahu and inquired about his reported fondness for the Spam-type lunch meat served in the IDF. Legend has it that Netanyahu jumped out of his chair in excitement, ...
Pat Buchanan: A Fire Bell in the Night for Norway Post Date: 2011-07-31 10:45:59 by buckeroo

"Like a fire bell in the night," wrote Thomas Jefferson in 1820, "this momentous question ... awakened and filled me with terror. I considered it at once as the knell of the Union." Jefferson was writing of the sudden resurgence of the slavery issue in the debate on Missouri's entry into the Union, as foreshadowing a civil war. The massacre in Oslo, where a terrorist detonated a fertilizer bomb to decapitate the government and proceeded to a youth camp to kill 68 children of Norway's ruling elite, is a fire bell in the night for Europe. For Anders Behring Breivik is no Islamic terrorist. He was born in Norway and chose as his targets, not Muslims whose ...

Obama asked Americans Friday to call, email, and tweet Congressional leaders to keep the pressure on lawmakers in hopes of reaching a bipartisan deal to raise the nations $14.3 trillion debt limit ahead of an Aug. 2 deadline. Obamas campaign staff used the @BarackObama Twitter account to post the Twitter handles of tweeting GOP leaders state by state, tweet by tweet. Tweet at your Republican legislators and urge them to support a bipartisan compromise to the debt crisis, Obamas campaign staff wrote on his account before launching the day-long Twitter campaign. The campaign appears to have served its purpose: Republican Twitter accounts ...

U.S. Report Recommends Ending Loan Guarantees To Israel At End Of 2011 Post Date: 2011-07-28 12:56:21 by Brian S

An internal report of the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of State recommends terminating the U.S. loan guarantee program to Israel at the end of 2011. The report, which deals with the performance of the U.S. embassy in Israel, says American diplomats have difficulty mustering support for the Obama administration's policies and implies the embassy failed completely in its PR efforts during the Obama administration. "A fragile Israeli coalition government leans toward the views of its members from the nationalist and religious right, creating a challenge for diplomats seeking to build support for U.S. policies," the report says. The unclassified version ...

Its travelled the equivalent of more than eight round trips to the sun, its been constantly occupied for 11 years and its cost the U.S. taxpayer billions of dollars to build and maintain. But the International Space Station will reportedly be taken out of orbit and allowed to sink into the Pacific Ocean in 2020 - just like its Russian predecessor, Mir. Russia's space agency announced the decision on Wednesday because the space base that is maintained around 200 miles away from the earth is too complicated and heavy to leave in orbit. We will be forced to sink the ISS,' Roscosmos deputy head Vitaly Davydov told the agency's ...
Clinton warns she may recommend Obama to veto foreign aid Bill Post Date: 2011-07-28 02:35:24 by socalv8

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has warned the lawmakers that she would recommend President Barack Obama to veto a Bill, which imposes aid restrictions on several countries including Pakistan. Ms. Clinton said this in a letter to leadership of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, which last week passed the Foreign Authorization Bill, which among other things requires a certification from the Secretary of State that Pakistan is not supporting terrorist activities. For Pakistan, the bill toughens the certification criteria for assistance under Kerry-Lugar-Berman Pakistan legislation and removes altogether that laws waiver authorities, Ms. Clinton told the ...

Norwegian mass killer claims Greek among associates Anders Behring Breivik says man from Greece was one of several that reformed Knights Templar Anders Behring Breivik's, the Norwegian man who killed at least 93 people in his homeland on Friday, has claimed that a Greek man was among several people that met in 2002 to reform the Knights Templar. The 32-year-old went on a shooting spree at an island summer camp and bombed central Oslo buildings occupied by Norway's Labour-led government. In a rambling, plagiaristic manifesto posted just before his killing spree began, Breivik says the Knights Templar, a medieval order of crusading warriors, lent modern renown by Dan Brown's ...
Israelis Debate on the Web: Did Norway Get What It Deserved? Post Date: 2011-07-26 19:33:22 by Jack

The Norway massacre has touched off a nasty war of words on the Israeli Internet over the meaning of the event and its implications for Israel. And I do mean nasty: Judging by the comments sections on the main Hebrew websites, the main questions under debate seem to be whether Norwegians deserve any sympathy from Israelis given the countrys pro-Palestinian policies, whether the killer deserves any sympathy given his self-declared intention of fighting Islamic extremism and, perhaps ironically, whether calling attention to this debate is in itself an anti-Israel or anti-Semitic act. The debate seems to be taking place almost entirely on Hebrew websites. Theres a bit of bile ...

But, awful as this atrocity was, native-born and homegrown terrorism is not the macro-threat to the continent. That threat comes from a burgeoning Muslim presence in a Europe that has never known mass immigration, its failure to assimilate, its growing alienation, and its sometime sympathy for Islamic militants and terrorists. Europe faces today an authentic and historic crisis. With her native-born populations aging, shrinking and dying, Europes nations have not discovered how to maintain their prosperity without immigrants. Yet the immigrants who have come from the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia have been slow to learn the language and have failed to ...
