TEHRAN Iran's first nuclear power plant has been hooked up to the national grid supplying 60 megawatts of its 1,000 megawatt capacity, the country's Atomic Energy Organisation announced on Sunday. "Last night at 11:29 pm (1859 GMT), the Bushehr power plant was connected with 60 megawatts to the national grid," the organisation's spokesman Hamid Khadem Qaemi, told Al-Alam television. The connection of the Russian-built plant in southern Iran to the national grid was originally scheduled for the end of 2010. The Bushehr plant was started up in November 2010 but repeated technical problems delayed its operations, leading to the removal of its fuel rods last ...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Washington has launched an effort to avoid a clash stemming from plans by Palestinians to seek recognition as a state at the United Nations, The New York Times reported on Saturday, citing senior U.S. officials and foreign diplomats. The Obama administration has introduced a plan to restart peace talks with Israel to try to convince Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to give up the bid to seek recognition at the annual meeting of leaders at the U.N. General Assembly, it said. The administration has told Abbas it would veto any request made to the U.N. Security Council to make a Palestinian nation a new member, the Times said. But it said Washington lacked support ...
MI5 former chief decries 'war on terror' Post Date: 2011-09-04 07:34:29 by lucysmom

Lady Eliza Manningham-Buller, the former head of MI5, delivered a withering attack on the invasion of Iraq, decried the term "war on terror", and held out the prospect of talks with al-Qaida. Recording her first BBC Reith lecture on the theme, Securing Freedom, she made clear she believed the UK and US governments had not sufficiently understood the resentment that had been building up among Arab people, which was only compounded by the war against Iraq. Before an audience which included Theresa May, the home secretary, she also said the 9/11 attacks were "a crime, not an act of war". "So I never felt it helpful to refer to a war on terror". Young Arabs, she ...
Europe Alarmed as Italy’s Austerity Plans Unravel Post Date: 2011-09-02 20:07:57 by Brian S

ROME Just a few weeks ago, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi announced a sweeping 45.5 billion-euro package of austerity measures to help Italy stave off a sovereign debt crisis. Today, those measures are unraveling, subject to so much backtracking and political wrangling that European leaders are raising the pressure on Italy to deliver as promised. Every day, modifications to a wide array of steps whether tax increases, pension spending or cuts to local government appear and vanish like so many trial balloons as Mr. Berlusconi struggles to appease the conflicting vested interests within his own fractious coalition. Rounding out the fray are the center-left opposition ...
Even Goldman Sachs Secretly Believes That An Economic Collapse Is Coming Post Date: 2011-09-02 16:36:38 by Capitalist Eric

Goldman Sachs is doing it again. Goldman is telling the public that everything is going to be just fine, but meanwhile they are advising their top clients to bet on a huge financial collapse. On August 16th, a 54 page report authored by Goldman strategist Alan Brazil was distributed to institutional clients. The general public was not intended to see this report. Fortunately, some folks over at the Wall Street Journal got their hands on a copy and they have filled us in on some of the details. It turns out that Goldman Sachs secretly believes that an economic collapse is coming, and they have some very interesting ideas about how to make money in the turbulent financial environment that we ...
Why the European Union Could be Dead Within a Week Post Date: 2011-09-02 13:41:45 by Capitalist Eric

Shah Gilani writes: The clock may be ticking on the future of the European Union (EU). After being shaken to its core by the sovereign debt crisis, the entire Eurozone now runs the risk of blowing up within a week. Germany's highest court, the German Federal Constitutional Court, on Sept. 7 rules on the legality of German participation in the euro rescue fund that was established to bail out Greece. If the court rules that Berlin's commitment to the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) goes against EU law, or worse, against the German constitution, the entire Eurozone could collapse. Think of the Eurozone as a minefield full of bombs that have long lay dormant, but are ...

Greece is insolvent! Who Knew? Hugh de Payns The Greeks have shown an unflagging ability to obscure and outright lie regarding their finances. The WSJ reports that perhaps as much as one trillion dollars is needed to bail out European banks. Much of that is needed due to those banks holding so much bad Greek debt. That's right, one trillion. In a 54-page report sent to hundreds of Goldman's institutional clients dated Aug. 16, Alan Brazil -- a Goldman strategist who sits on the firm's trading desk -- argued that as much as $1 trillion in capital may be needed to shore up European banks. Rumor has it that Finland wanted the Parthenon as collateral before they would loan ...

Pakistan is behind al-Qaeda (and everyone in Washington knows this) This was in the comment section of foreignpolicy.com which I found worthy of reposting here. MARTY MARTEL 4:54 AM ET August 31, 2011 Gartenstein-Rosss book on Bin Ladens legacy misses forest for the woods since it mises the basic point of how did Bin Laden came to be able to wage this LONG WAR. Let us examine some facts: 1. Nobody forced Pakistani government to facilitate relocation of Osama bin Laden from Sudan to Afghanistan in 1996. Benazir Bhuttos democratic government of Pakistan chose to do so of its own free will. 2. As Sandy Berger, Clintons national security advisor told 9/11 ...

BOSTON (BNO NEWS) -- A Massachusetts man has pleaded guilty to a charge of foreign economic espionage for exchanging sensitive information with a person who he believed was an Israeli spy, officials said on Tuesday. The man worked for Akamai when he committed the crimes. Elliot Doxer, 43, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Denise J. Casper to a charge of providing trade secrets over an 18-month period from the finance department of Akamai Technologies to an undercover federal agent posing as an Israeli intelligence officer. In 2006, Doxer sent an email to the Israeli consulate in Boston stating that he worked in the finance department of Akamai Technologies and was willing to ...
Palestinian UN Membership Poses Greater Threat Than Hamas, Says Israel Post Date: 2011-08-31 11:51:20 by Brian S

By AFP, OCCUPIED JERUSALEM The Palestinian campaign to secure full UN membership presents a greater threat to Israel than that posed by Hamas, the Israeli finance minister said on Wednesday. This Palestinian initiative represents a more serious threat than that posed by Hamas, Yuval Steinitz told Israels public radio, referring to Gaza's Islamist rulers whose founding charter calls for the destruction of the Jewish state. If the Palestinians made good on their plans to seek United Nations membership, Israel would respond, he promised. Although Steinitz did not spell out exactly how Israel would retaliate, his remarks were made shortly after Haaretz ...

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Ron Prosor, sent a classified cable to the Foreign Ministry last week, stating that Israel stands no chance of rallying a substantial number of states to oppose a resolution at the UN General Assembly recognizing a Palestinian state in September. Sources in the Prime Minister's Office, meanwhile, said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering not participating in this year's General Assembly. Instead President Shimon Peres is likely to represent Israel. Under the headline "Report from the frontline at the UN," Prosor - considered one of the most experienced and senior Israeli diplomats - offered a very pessimistic ...
Why Gold Will Replace U.S. Treasuries as the World's Last Risk-Free Investment Post Date: 2011-08-30 17:53:34 by Capitalist Eric

Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: It wasn't long ago that U.S. Treasuries were considered a "risk-free" investment. But the financial crisis, hulking budget deficits, political gridlock, and the Standard & Poor's debt downgrade have changed that perception - forever . Now there's only one safe -haven investment: gold. Since surging to a record high $1,917.90 an ounce earlier this month, the price of gold has slipped on profit taking. But don't let that minor correction fool you into thinking gold's bull run is over. The yellow metal's best days are still ahead. How do I know? Because, unlike U.S. debt, gold can't be downgraded. It has inherent value ...

Libyan rebel leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil gave forces loyal to Muammar Qaddafi until Sept. 3 to surrender or face attack and said members of the former leaders government would receive fair trials. The coastal city of Sirte and the southern town of Sabha are the key remaining bastions of Qaddafi loyalists, Jalil, chairman of the rebel National Transitional Council, said today in a televised press conference broadcast from Benghazi. The entry to Sirte and southern towns of Libya should be as peaceful as possible to avoid more bloodshed and destruction, he said. If there are no indications for conducting this peacefully we can act decisively to end this situation in a ...

Russia appears to be edging closer to giving the go-ahead for an underwater tunnel which could one day allow vacationers in Alaska to take a day trip to Siberia in Russia. The tunnel, which would reportedly be 65 miles (105 km) long and bored under the icy waters of the narrow Bering Strait which separates Russia from North America above the Pacific Sea, was reportedly backed by high-profile Russian politician Aleksandr Levinthal this week. London's The Times reported that Levinthal endorsed the idea at a conference on developing Russia's north-eastern rail infrastructure - although it was first mooted by Tsar Nicholas II over a hundred years ago. At twice the length of the ...
Inside Libyan leader Moammar Khadafy's compound: Photo album of Condoleezza Rice discovered Post Date: 2011-08-28 16:54:13 by Ferret Mike

Rebel fighters look through an album of Condoleeza Rice they found inside Gen. Khadafy's compound in Bab Al-Aziziya in Tripoli, Libya on Wednesday. Daffy Khadafy really did have a crush on Condi. When rebels overrun your bunker, they usually find all sorts of embarrassing private items. At Bab al Aziziya, Col. Moammar Khadafy's fortified compound in Tripoli, rebels were chortling Thursday over a scrapbook they found full of photos of former President George W. Bush's Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Page after page featured her toothy grin and soignee hair styles. The diplomatic world had long snickered at Khadafy's passion for Rice. In 2007, he swooned like a ...

Will Germany Become First Nation with a Hydrogen Economy? Post Date: 2011-08-27 19:15:01 by jwpegler

Germany will become the first country completely accessible to fuel cell vehicles in 2015, when carmaker Daimler and the Linde technology group will build 20 new hydrogen filling stations. The result will quadruple the number of public stations available and make it possible for a fuel cell vehicle to reach any location in the country. Daimler's plans to start mass-producing fuel cell vehicles next year were severely limited by the lack of public hydrogen filling stations in Germany. The carmaker realized that if its vision of battery-powered electric vehicles gaining mass appeal in tandem with fuel cell electrics was to come true, it needed to so something about the lack of hydrogen ...

One paper from Columbia and Harvard University researchers concludes that if historic trends continue there will be 65 million more obese adults in the USA and 11 million more in the UK by 2030 ...
Ahmadinejad: Holocaust 'Big Lie' Used To Justify Establishment Of Israel Post Date: 2011-08-26 11:10:16 by Brian S

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Friday that the Holocaust was a "big lie" used to justify establishment of the state of Israel. "The Zionist regime's establishment was based on numerous deceptions and lies and one of the biggest lies was the Holocaust," Ahmadinejad said in a speech after an anti-Israeli rally in Tehran and other Iranian cities. The late supreme leader of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, declared the last Friday of the fasting month of Ramadan to be Qods, or Jerusalem, Day and called for annual mass rallies against Israel and in support of the Palestinians. The president provoked international condemnation ...

Who and how many will take part in today's million-man demonstration in Tahrir Square? It is not expected to be one of the routine demonstrations that have shaken Egypt since January. This time, Tahrir Square will confront Egypt's foreign policy. The headline of the demonstration is "Million-man demonstration to expel the Israeli ambassador," and most of the protest groups have announced that they will participate. Egyptian anger is not only directed at Israel which killed five soldiers during the terrorist attack near Eilat last week, but also against the Egyptian government's policy toward Israel. Since the terrorist attack there have been raucous demonstrations in ...

France introduces new tax on high incomes Post Date: 2011-08-26 07:35:58 by lucysmom

The French government is to impose an extra tax of 3% on annual income above 500,000 euros (£440,000; $721,000). It is part of a package of measures to try to cut the country's deficit by 12bn euros over two years. The tax increase came after some of France's wealthiest people had called on the government to tackle its deficit by raising taxes on the rich. snip Sixteen executives, including Europe's richest woman, the L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, had offered in an open letter to pay a "special contribution" in a spirit of "solidarity". It appeared on the website of the French magazine Le Nouvel Observateur. It was signed by some of ...
Astronomers discover planet made of diamond Post Date: 2011-08-25 19:36:30 by A K A Stone

(Reuters) - Astronomers have spotted an exotic planet that seems to be made of diamond racing around a tiny star in our galactic backyard. The new planet is far denser than any other known so far and consists largely of carbon. Because it is so dense, scientists calculate the carbon must be crystalline, so a large part of this strange world will effectively be diamond. "The evolutionary history and amazing density of the planet all suggest it is comprised of carbon -- i.e. a massive diamond orbiting a neutron star every two hours in an orbit so tight it would fit inside our own Sun," said Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. Lying 4,000 light years ...
