Turkey Predicts Alliance With Egypt as Regional Anchors Post Date: 2011-09-19 19:08:43 by Brian S

ANKARA, Turkey A newly assertive Turkey offered on Sunday a vision of a starkly realigned Middle East, where the countrys former allies in Syria and Israel fall into deeper isolation, and a burgeoning alliance with Egypt underpins a new order in a region roiled by revolt and revolution. The portrait was described by Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu of Turkey in an hourlong interview before he was to leave for the United Nations, where a contentious debate was expected this week over a Palestinian bid for recognition as a state. Viewed by many as the architect of a foreign policy that has made Turkey one of the most relevant players in the Muslim world, Mr. Davutoglu pointed to ...
Argentina’s Turnaround Tango Post Date: 2011-09-19 08:57:24 by lucysmom

ARGENTINA may seem like one of the last countries on earth to offer lessons for dealing with economic malaise. Once the eighth-largest economy in the world, it steadily slid through the 20th century, thanks to decades of repressive dictatorships and inconsistent market experiments. This ended ignominiously in 2001, when it defaulted on $100 billion in sovereign debt, plunging over half its 35 million people into poverty. snip Why have Argentines embraced bigger government? In part because the preceding era showed how poorly austerity measures the sort now being pushed by conservatives in the United States promote growth. In the late 1990s, Argentina cut government spending ...
Boehner: U.S. Must Have Strong, Reliable Commitment to Israel Post Date: 2011-09-18 18:18:46 by Brian S

House Speaker John Boehner says the U.S. commitment to Israel should be stronger now as the American ally faces challenges to its existence in the volatile Middle East. In an address Sunday to the Jewish National Fund conference in Cincinnati, the Ohio Republican dismissed suggestions that Israel has isolated itself and he argued that the Jewish state stands above others as the "one true beacon of freedom and opportunity" in the region. The U.S., he said, must stand by Israel's side "not just as a broker or observer -- but as a strong partner and reliable ally." A text of Boehner's address was made available in advance. Boehner's remarks come on the eve ...

Turkey’S Anti-Zionist Stance Is A Positive Move Post Date: 2011-09-16 19:29:13 by Brian S

Israel is living in a region whose people believe that the Zionist regime is their archenemy. But with the backing of the United States and other allies, Israel was able to obtain the support of the Arab dictators of the region, who suppressed anyone opposed to the cancerous Zionist entity. For many years, the people of the Middle East have been lamenting the plight of oppressed Palestinians expelled from their homeland. The people of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria directly witnessed this barbaric act, in which hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were ethnically cleansed and forced to live in refugee camps in their countries. However, since the fall of some of the dictatorships in ...
Clash of Civilizations: Chinese condoms too small for South Africans Post Date: 2011-09-16 19:20:13 by jwpegler

A South African court has blocked the government from buying 11 million Chinese condoms, saying they are too small, a newspaper reported on Friday. The finance ministry had awarded a contract to a firm called Siqamba Medical, which planned to buy the Phoenurse condoms from China, the Beeld newspaper said. A rival firm, Sekunjalo Investments Corporation, turned to the High Court in Pretoria after losing the bid, arguing that their condoms were 20 per cent larger than the Chinese ones. Judge Sulet Potterill blocked the deal with Siqamba, ruling that the condoms were too small, made from the wrong material, and were not approved by the World Health Organisation, the paper said.
France moves Muslim faithful off streets after prayer ban Post Date: 2011-09-16 19:17:39 by jwpegler

A ban on praying in French streets came into effect on Friday, with thousands of the nation's Muslim faithful being moved to temporary alternative spaces for their day of prayer. From Paris to Marseille, Friday's midday prayers will be led from disused barracks or other temporary buildings, after the question of Islam's visibility became a political issue under right-wing President Nicolas Sarkozy. France, home to Europe's largest Muslim population, this year banned the face- covering burqa and earlier this week Interior Minister Claude Gueant warned that 'from Sept 16 there will be no more prayers in the street'. 'If anyone happens to be recalcitrant we will ...

(Reuters) - The U.S. pursuit of offshore tax evaders is widening to include Israel, where U.S. authorities are scrutinizing three of Israel's largest banks over suspicions their Swiss outposts helped American clients evade taxes, people briefed on the matter said. The banks under scrutiny by the U.S. Justice Department's criminal tax division are Bank Hapoalim, Bank Leumi le-Israel BM and Mizrahi-Tefahot, the sources said. The shift to Israel from Switzerland, for years the main focus of the Justice Department's campaign against offshore private banking secrecy, signals the broadening of a landmark probe by the agency that began in 2007 with UBS AG, Switzerland's largest ...
New Study Quantifies Use of Social Media in Arab Spring Post Date: 2011-09-16 18:47:55 by jwpegler

In the 21st century, the revolution may not be televised -- but it likely will be tweeted, blogged, texted and organized on Facebook, recent experience suggests. After analyzing more than 3 million tweets, gigabytes of YouTube content and thousands of blog posts, a new study finds that social media played a central role in shaping political debates in the Arab Spring. Conversations about revolution often preceded major events, and social media has carried inspiring stories of protest across international borders. "Our evidence suggests that social media carried a cascade of messages about freedom and democracy across North Africa and the Middle East, and helped raise expectations for ...

The sheer size of US debt and the realities of our ability to pay this money back has come under fire by individual Americans and foreign governments alike. Anyone who has been paying attention understands that there are really only two options left for the US government when it comes to our debt and paying it off is not one of them. Either we will default on our loans, a situation made plausible by none other than Tim Geithner at the beginning of the year, or we inflate the debt away. Any astute investor knows this. And the Chinese government certainly qualifies as astute. They know whats coming. That being said, its no surprise, then, to see high level Chinese ...

CAIRO - Egypt's Prime Minister Essam Sharaf said a peace deal with Israel was not "sacred" and could be changed for the benefit of peace or the region. His comments, made in an interview with a Turkish television channel and broadcast on state television, were the strongest yet by the new government which took over after president Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in February. "The Camp David agreement is not a sacred thing and is always open to discussion with what would benefit the region and the case of fair peace ... and we could make a change if needed," he said in the interview. Politics professor Mustapha al-Sayyid said Sharaf's comments appeared to be aimed ...

Kids' future careers jeopardized by committing hate crime of saying the word "gay" Over 30,000 British schoolchildren, some as young as three, have had their names registered on a government database and branded "racist" or "homophobic" for using playground insults, infractions that could impact their future careers. The shocking figures were disclosed after civil liberties group the Manifesto Club made a Freedom of Information Act request which betrayed the fact that kids who used petty jibes are now being treated as thought criminals by education authorities. 34,000 incidents of "racism" in total were reported for the year 2009-2010, with ...

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said yesterday that European states are going to have to do more to solve their enormous debt troubles. To that I ask, more of what? That can only be more money printing. Mark my words, more debt and fiat currency will be the ultimate answer to the European debt problem. It is either that or let the banks and some countries in Europe go under. If Greece was the only country to default and leave the EU, then that would not be all that bad. The real problem is all the other heavily indebted countries that are levels of magnitude more of a problem than little Greece. France24.com reported yesterday, The Eurozone crisis ...

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman ordered the early evacuation of Israel's embassy in Jordan on Wednesday, over fears of violent anti-Israel protests similar to those which erupted in Cairo last week. Protocol stipulates that all employees return to Israel every weekend, with the exclusion of one diplomatic representative as well as a security team. On Wednesday, however, it was affirmed that Israel had decided to vacate its Jordanian embassy a day earlier than schedule, following fears of violent protests outside the embassy building, expected to take place on Thursday and throughout the weekend. WASHINGTON - The Obama administration warned Tuesday of growing religious intolerance and violence in Arab nations undergoing popular revolts that could undermine fragile democratic transitions. While the overthrow of longtime autocratic leaders in the Middle East and North Africa has given millions hope for freedom it has also opened up religious and ethnic minorities to new threats, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said. She urged countries not to "trade one form of repression for another" and to embrace the freedom to worship for all faiths as they embrace political pluralism for the first time in generations. JERUSALEM With its Cairo embassy ransacked, its ambassador to Turkey expelled and the Palestinians seeking statehood recognition at the United Nations, Israel found itself on Saturday increasingly isolated and grappling with a radically transformed Middle East where it believes its options are limited and poor. The diplomatic crisis, in which winds unleashed by the Arab Spring are now casting a chill over the region, was crystallized by the scene of Israeli military jets sweeping into Cairo at dawn on Saturday to evacuate diplomats after the Israeli Embassy had been besieged by thousands of protesters. It was an image that reminded some Israelis of Iran in 1979, when Israel ...
