Fuel Cell Vehicle Market Could Top $16 Billion By End Of Decade

Fuel cell vehicles may not be as popular as plug-ins or electric vehicles, but new research suggests that the market will grow dramatically by the end of the decade. According to Pike Research, global revenue for fuel cell vehicles will reach $16.9 billion by 2020. The largest projected market for these vehicles is Asia Pacific, which is expected to account for nearly half of all FCV sales, though European demand is expected to grow dramatically as well. Pike predicts that Western Europe will have an annual growth rate of 53 percent. However, in spite of this growth, there are factors limiting just how popular FCVs could eventually be. "The limiting factor for the FCV market will be ...

Hunger crisis grips North Korea as food runs short

HAEJU, North Korea — In a pediatric hospital in North Korea's most productive farming province, children lay two to a bed. All showed signs of severe malnutrition: skin infections, patchy hair, listless apathy. "Their mothers have to bring them here on bicycles," said duty doctor Jang Kum Son in the Yellow Sea port city of Haeju. "We used to have an ambulance but it's completely broken down. One mother traveled 72 kilometers (45 miles). By the time they get here, it's often too late." It's also getting late for North Korea to get the massive amount of food aid it claims to need before the harsh winter sets in. The country's dysfunctional ...

Observing the correlation of forces in this city and the intensity of conviction in the base of each party, the outcome of the ongoing fiscal fight between Barack Obama and the Tea Party Republicans seems preordained. Deadlock. There will be no big jobs-for-taxes deal. The can will be kicked down the road into the next administration. A second truth is emerging. When the cutting comes, as it shall, the Pentagon will be first to ascend the scaffold. Why so? Consider. The Republican House cannot agree to tax increases without risking retribution from the base and repudiation by its presidential candidates. All have pledged to oppose even a dollar in tax hikes for 10 dollars in spending ...

Department of Pre-Crime: Santa Cruz police test software that predicts where and when criminals will strike

In the film Minority Report, a police department 'predicted' crimes - but they had the advantage of floatariums full of psychics who could see into the future. The Santa Cruz police's 'predictive' software uses the rather more prosaic method of software running on an ordinary PC - software that takes notice of an unusual phenomenon. In the same way that an earthquake causes 'aftershocks', crimes such as burglaries seem to trigger 'aftercrimes'. Mathematicians turned to earthquake-predicting equations to catch burglars in the act Would be evil-doers can rest a little easier in their shoes, though - the software, designed by mathematician George Mohler at Santa Clara University, ...

World Facing Worst Financial Crisis In History, Bank Of England Governor Says

Sir Mervyn King was speaking after the decision by the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee to put £75billion of newly created money into the economy in a desperate effort to stave off a new credit crisis and a UK recession. Economists said the Bank’s decision to resume its quantitative easing [QE], or asset purchase programme, showed it was increasingly fearful for the economy, and predicted more such moves ahead. Sir Mervyn said the Bank had been driven by growing signs of a global economic disaster. “This is the most serious financial crisis we’ve seen, at least since the 1930s, if not ever. We’re having to deal with very unusual circumstances, but to act ...

WITH his ratings at record lows, scandal-hit Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi today quipped his party should change its name to "Go Pussy!" in the latest gaffe likely to incense swathes of voters. "We will change the name of the People of Freedom because people no longer carry it in their hearts," the 75-year-old told lawmakers from his ruling coalition in parliament, Italian news media reported. "We will examine any suggestions," he added. Berlusconi then reportedly joked: "I'm told the name that would have the biggest success is 'Go Pussy!'" The billionaire tycoon first entered the political arena in the early 1990s with a ...

Russia Says U.S. Approach to NATO Missile Defense System Is ‘Unacceptable’

Russia is alarmed at the U.S. decision to station four ships at a base on Spain’s Atlantic coast as part of an American-led NATO missile defense system, the Foreign Ministry said. The U.S. approach to developing its capability against missile threats in Europe is “unacceptable,” the ministry said in a statement published on its website today. Russia “cannot but be alarmed because already in the first phase it’s leading to a substantial buildup of the U.S. anti- missile capability in Europe,” the ministry said. Spain is the fourth European nation agreeing to participate directly in the Europe-wide missile defense program, intended to protect against attacks ...

We pointed to a new front of protests against the banks, namely, efforts in California to obstruct foreclosure auctions. In Greece, they are much more frontal. A translation of how they go about it, from The Greek Streets (hat tip reader Deontos, via Richard Brennman): The committees ‘I do not Pay’ stopped house auctions at the courthouse on Sep 21 in Athens. They invaded the courthouse where houses confiscated by banks were to be auctioned, with a banner writing ‘No house to end up at the hands of bankers’ and chanting slogans entered the room where auctions were to take place, they made bank lawyers and other scum who went to buy the confiscated houses to leave the ...

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan — Punctually, at 8 o’clock every evening, the cellphone signals disappear in this provincial capital. Under pressure from the Taliban, the major carriers turn off their signal towers, effectively severing most of the connections to the rest of the world. This now occurs in some portion of more than half the provinces in Afghanistan, and exemplifies the Taliban’s new and more subtle ways of asserting themselves, even as NATO generals portray the insurgents as a diminished force less able to hold ground. The question is whether the Taliban need to hold territory as they once did in order to influence the population. Increasingly, it seems, the answer ...

A bill on the reform of the exchange rates monitoring system approved on Monday by the U.S. Senate will complicate the resolution of economic problems between China and the United States and could spark a trade war, the People's Bank of China said in a statement. "The yuan bill passed by the U.S. senate will not solve its problems, such as insufficient savings, a high trade deficit and high unemployment rate, but it may seriously affect the whole progress of China's reform of its yuan exchange rate regime and may also lead to a trade war which we would not like to see," China's central bank said. The U.S. Senate voted on Monday to open a week of debate on the ...

Russia, China Veto UN Resolution to Condemn Syria for Crackdown

UNITED NATIONS – Russia and China have vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution that threatened sanctions against Syria if it didn't immediately halt its military crackdown against civilians. European members of the Security Council watered down the language on sanctions three times to try to avoid the vetoes. The resolution was defeated late Tuesday by a vote of 9-2 with four abstentions. Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told the Interfax news agency earlier Tuesday that the resolution was "unacceptable" because it envisaged sanctions and did not call on Syrian President Bashar Assad's government to start talks with the opposition. (Reuters) - Amanda Knox was expected to get a warm welcome on her return to Seattle on Tuesday afternoon, one day after an Italian court cleared the 24-year-old college student of murder and freed her from prison. Knox, who grew up in the close-knit West Seattle neighborhood where both of her divorced parents still live, was expected to land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport shortly after 5 p.m. local time. It was not immediately clear whether she would head directly home or would speak to reporters on her arrival. Knox's supporters cheered, cried and hugged on Monday at the news that she had been freed after nearly four years in an Italian prison for the November 1, 2007 ...

GOP Candidates Show More Loyalty To A Foreign Country (israel) Than Their Own

It is disconcerting to see the foreign-policy traps that Republican presidential candidates set for themselves, especially when it comes to Israel and the Middle East. They do a disservice to the United States by trying to bind a sitting American president to the policies of a foreign government, specifically to the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. What do you call it when GOP presidential hopefuls like Rick Perry and Mitt Romney publicly denounce a duly elected American president so they can walk in lock step with the Israeli leader, whose policies are often contrary to US interests? Norman Olsen, a former US diplomat in Israel who served in Republican and ...

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin called for the unification ofpost-Soviet states into a “Eurasian Union” in an article published Tuesday on the announcement of his planned return to the Kremlin. Putin’s article in the Izvestia daily outlining a grand project to integrate post-Soviet states into closer cooperation comes five months before polls that can put him at the helm of foreign policy decisions for at least six years. The front-page piece, titled “New Eurasian integration project: a future that begins today”, sings praises to Russia’s economic integration with Belarus and Kazakhstan. But, Putin writes, “we set a more ambitious goal to go to ...

We are getting so close to a financial collapse in Europe that you can almost hear the debt bubbles popping. All across the western world, governments and major banks are rapidly becoming insolvent. So far, the powers that be are keeping all of the balls in the air by throwing around lots of bailout money. But now the political will for more bailouts is drying up and the number of troubled entities seems to grow by the day. Right now the western world is facing a debt crisis that is absolutely unprecedented in world history. Europe has had a tremendously difficult time just trying to keep Greece afloat, and several much larger European countries are now on the verge of a major financial ...

Rick Perry Says Drug War ‘May Require Our Military in Mexico’ (Will GOP ever stop being crazy? Face it folks, Perry talks crazy because the GOP base is crazy. Or maybe Perry's oil backers want all that Mexican oil and the drug war is the excuse?)

Oct 1, 2011 6:41pm Rick Perry Says Drug War ‘May Require Our Military in Mexico’ Texas Gov. Rick Perry spent today campaigning in New Hampshire, hammering away at his message that “over-taxation, over-regulation, and over-litigation” are hurting business and the U.S. economy, but he also advocated for a larger government role in the war on drugs. At a house party in Manchester, Perry said that ending the drug war in Mexico “may require our military in Mexico.” “The way that we were able to stop the drug cartels in Colombia was with a coordinated effort,” Perry said. “It may require our military in Mexico working in concert with them to kill ...

Top Al Qaeda Bombmaker Dead In Drone Strike

WASHINGTON - U.S. intelligence indicates that the top al Qaeda bomb-maker in Yemen also died in the drone strike that killed radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, two U.S. officials said Friday. Ibrahim al-Asiri is the bomb-maker linked to the bomb hidden in the underwear of a Nigerian man accused of trying to blow up a plane over Detroit on Christmas Day 2009. The FBI pulled al-Asiri's fingerprint off that bomb. Authorities also believe he built the bombs that al Qaeda slipped into printers and shipped to the U.S. last year in a nearly catastrophic attack. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because al-Asiri's death has not officially been confirmed. Al-Asiri's death ...

Al-Awlaki’s Killing: Obama’s Proof He Is Better At Fighting The War Against Terror Than Bush

As high profile Al-Qaeda leader Awlaki was killed in a strike on his convoy directed by the CIA and carried out with the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command's firepower, Obama it seems wants to prove he is in control when it comes to the war against terror, leaving little room for the republicans to attack him on the subject during the next presidential campaign. The Yemen Defence Ministry also announced a second American militant, Samir Khan, who produced 'Inspire', an English-language al-Qaeda Web magazine, died in the same strike. Awlaki, who was suspected with inspired the actions of Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hasan, who was accused of conducting the mass shooting at ...

Utilities Give Away Power as Sun Floods Grid
Post Date: 2011-09-30 11:23:51 by Brian S

The 15 mile-per-hour winds that buffeted northern Germany on July 24 caused the nation’s 21,600 windmills to generate so much power that utilities such as EON AG and RWE AG (RWE) had to pay consumers to take it off the grid. Rather than an anomaly, the event marked the 31st hour this year when power companies lost money on their electricity in the intraday market because of a torrent of supply from wind and solar parks. The phenomenon was unheard of five years ago. With Europe’s wind and solar farms set to triple by 2020, utilities investing in new coal and gas-fired power stations no longer face stable returns. As more renewables come on line, a gas plant owned by RWE or EON ...

While the world fixates on Europe, signs of a China crash are mounting behind the scenes. Imagine you run a business with 3,000 employees. Your factories churn out 20 million pairs of sunglasses per year -- the best-selling brand in China. You are a celebrated businessman in your region, with expanded interests in real estate and solar energy. Oh, and one more thing: You are flat broke. As it turns out, your company borrowed huge sums at high interest -- more than cash flow could justify -- and you have no hope of paying the loans back. Now the business is insolvent. What do you do? If your name is Hu Fulin, you run away. "The east China city of Wenzhou is battling its own ...

MADRID — Hundreds of thousands of disillusioned Indians cheer a rural activist on a hunger strike. Israel reels before the largest street demonstrations in its history. Enraged young people in Spain and Greece take over public squares across their countries. Their complaints range from corruption to lack of affordable housing and joblessness, common grievances the world over. But from South Asia to the heartland of Europe and now even to Wall Street, these protesters share something else: wariness, even contempt, toward traditional politicians and the democratic political process they preside over. They are taking to the streets, in part, because they have little faith in the ballot ...

Iran Begins Large-Scale Production Of New Cruise Missile

Iran says it's started large-scale production of a domestically-developed cruise missile designed for sea-based targets and capable of destroying warships. Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said an unspecified number of samples of "Ghader," or "Capable" as the missile is called in Farsi, were delivered to the Revolutionary Guard's navy, assigned to protect Iran's sea borders. His remarks were reported by state TV on Wednesday. The cruise missile has a range of 124 miles (200 kilometers). It can reportedly travel at low altitudes and has a lighter weight and smaller dimensions. Iran's growing arsenal is raising concerns, including its short and medium ...

China and the U.S. finally found something to agree on: Europe is doomed and might take the world’s two biggest economies down with it. Neither officials in Beijing nor Washington are actually using the “D word.” They don’t need to, not with Zhou Xiaochuan, China’s central bank governor, talking matter-of- factly about emerging nations bailing out the euro region and U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warning of “cascading default, bank runs and catastrophic risk” there. The price tag for keeping the Greek-led turmoil from killing the euro is rising fast. Asians are so anxious about it that they’re querying Americans -- like me. In my travels ...
