Russia, China Veto UN Resolution to Condemn Syria for Crackdown
Post Date: 2011-10-04 19:19:23 by Brian S

UNITED NATIONS – Russia and China have vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution that threatened sanctions against Syria if it didn't immediately halt its military crackdown against civilians. European members of the Security Council watered down the language on sanctions three times to try to avoid the vetoes. The resolution was defeated late Tuesday by a vote of 9-2 with four abstentions. Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told the Interfax news agency earlier Tuesday that the resolution was "unacceptable" because it envisaged sanctions and did not call on Syrian President Bashar Assad's government to start talks with the opposition. The ...

Amanda Knox expected to get warm welcome in Seattle

(Reuters) - Amanda Knox was expected to get a warm welcome on her return to Seattle on Tuesday afternoon, one day after an Italian court cleared the 24-year-old college student of murder and freed her from prison. Knox, who grew up in the close-knit West Seattle neighborhood where both of her divorced parents still live, was expected to land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport shortly after 5 p.m. local time. It was not immediately clear whether she would head directly home or would speak to reporters on her arrival. Knox's supporters cheered, cried and hugged on Monday at the news that she had been freed after nearly four years in an Italian prison for the November 1, 2007 ...

GOP Candidates Show More Loyalty To A Foreign Country (israel) Than Their Own

It is disconcerting to see the foreign-policy traps that Republican presidential candidates set for themselves, especially when it comes to Israel and the Middle East. They do a disservice to the United States by trying to bind a sitting American president to the policies of a foreign government, specifically to the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. What do you call it when GOP presidential hopefuls like Rick Perry and Mitt Romney publicly denounce a duly elected American president so they can walk in lock step with the Israeli leader, whose policies are often contrary to US interests? Norman Olsen, a former US diplomat in Israel who served in Republican and ...

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin called for the unification ofpost-Soviet states into a “Eurasian Union” in an article published Tuesday on the announcement of his planned return to the Kremlin. Putin’s article in the Izvestia daily outlining a grand project to integrate post-Soviet states into closer cooperation comes five months before polls that can put him at the helm of foreign policy decisions for at least six years. The front-page piece, titled “New Eurasian integration project: a future that begins today”, sings praises to Russia’s economic integration with Belarus and Kazakhstan. But, Putin writes, “we set a more ambitious goal to go to ...

We are getting so close to a financial collapse in Europe that you can almost hear the debt bubbles popping. All across the western world, governments and major banks are rapidly becoming insolvent. So far, the powers that be are keeping all of the balls in the air by throwing around lots of bailout money. But now the political will for more bailouts is drying up and the number of troubled entities seems to grow by the day. Right now the western world is facing a debt crisis that is absolutely unprecedented in world history. Europe has had a tremendously difficult time just trying to keep Greece afloat, and several much larger European countries are now on the verge of a major financial ...

Rick Perry Says Drug War ‘May Require Our Military in Mexico’ (Will GOP ever stop being crazy? Face it folks, Perry talks crazy because the GOP base is crazy. Or maybe Perry's oil backers want all that Mexican oil and the drug war is the excuse?)

Oct 1, 2011 6:41pm Rick Perry Says Drug War ‘May Require Our Military in Mexico’ Texas Gov. Rick Perry spent today campaigning in New Hampshire, hammering away at his message that “over-taxation, over-regulation, and over-litigation” are hurting business and the U.S. economy, but he also advocated for a larger government role in the war on drugs. At a house party in Manchester, Perry said that ending the drug war in Mexico “may require our military in Mexico.” “The way that we were able to stop the drug cartels in Colombia was with a coordinated effort,” Perry said. “It may require our military in Mexico working in concert with them to kill ...

Top Al Qaeda Bombmaker Dead In Drone Strike

WASHINGTON - U.S. intelligence indicates that the top al Qaeda bomb-maker in Yemen also died in the drone strike that killed radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, two U.S. officials said Friday. Ibrahim al-Asiri is the bomb-maker linked to the bomb hidden in the underwear of a Nigerian man accused of trying to blow up a plane over Detroit on Christmas Day 2009. The FBI pulled al-Asiri's fingerprint off that bomb. Authorities also believe he built the bombs that al Qaeda slipped into printers and shipped to the U.S. last year in a nearly catastrophic attack. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because al-Asiri's death has not officially been confirmed. Al-Asiri's death ...

Al-Awlaki’s Killing: Obama’s Proof He Is Better At Fighting The War Against Terror Than Bush

As high profile Al-Qaeda leader Awlaki was killed in a strike on his convoy directed by the CIA and carried out with the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command's firepower, Obama it seems wants to prove he is in control when it comes to the war against terror, leaving little room for the republicans to attack him on the subject during the next presidential campaign. The Yemen Defence Ministry also announced a second American militant, Samir Khan, who produced 'Inspire', an English-language al-Qaeda Web magazine, died in the same strike. Awlaki, who was suspected with inspired the actions of Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hasan, who was accused of conducting the mass shooting at ...

Utilities Give Away Power as Sun Floods Grid
Post Date: 2011-09-30 11:23:51 by Brian S

The 15 mile-per-hour winds that buffeted northern Germany on July 24 caused the nation’s 21,600 windmills to generate so much power that utilities such as EON AG and RWE AG (RWE) had to pay consumers to take it off the grid. Rather than an anomaly, the event marked the 31st hour this year when power companies lost money on their electricity in the intraday market because of a torrent of supply from wind and solar parks. The phenomenon was unheard of five years ago. With Europe’s wind and solar farms set to triple by 2020, utilities investing in new coal and gas-fired power stations no longer face stable returns. As more renewables come on line, a gas plant owned by RWE or EON ...

While the world fixates on Europe, signs of a China crash are mounting behind the scenes. Imagine you run a business with 3,000 employees. Your factories churn out 20 million pairs of sunglasses per year -- the best-selling brand in China. You are a celebrated businessman in your region, with expanded interests in real estate and solar energy. Oh, and one more thing: You are flat broke. As it turns out, your company borrowed huge sums at high interest -- more than cash flow could justify -- and you have no hope of paying the loans back. Now the business is insolvent. What do you do? If your name is Hu Fulin, you run away. "The east China city of Wenzhou is battling its own ...

MADRID — Hundreds of thousands of disillusioned Indians cheer a rural activist on a hunger strike. Israel reels before the largest street demonstrations in its history. Enraged young people in Spain and Greece take over public squares across their countries. Their complaints range from corruption to lack of affordable housing and joblessness, common grievances the world over. But from South Asia to the heartland of Europe and now even to Wall Street, these protesters share something else: wariness, even contempt, toward traditional politicians and the democratic political process they preside over. They are taking to the streets, in part, because they have little faith in the ballot ...

Iran Begins Large-Scale Production Of New Cruise Missile

Iran says it's started large-scale production of a domestically-developed cruise missile designed for sea-based targets and capable of destroying warships. Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said an unspecified number of samples of "Ghader," or "Capable" as the missile is called in Farsi, were delivered to the Revolutionary Guard's navy, assigned to protect Iran's sea borders. His remarks were reported by state TV on Wednesday. The cruise missile has a range of 124 miles (200 kilometers). It can reportedly travel at low altitudes and has a lighter weight and smaller dimensions. Iran's growing arsenal is raising concerns, including its short and medium ...

China and the U.S. finally found something to agree on: Europe is doomed and might take the world’s two biggest economies down with it. Neither officials in Beijing nor Washington are actually using the “D word.” They don’t need to, not with Zhou Xiaochuan, China’s central bank governor, talking matter-of- factly about emerging nations bailing out the euro region and U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warning of “cascading default, bank runs and catastrophic risk” there. The price tag for keeping the Greek-led turmoil from killing the euro is rising fast. Asians are so anxious about it that they’re querying Americans -- like me. In my travels ...

The World from Berlin: Obama's Euro-Crisis Lecture Is 'Pitiful and Sad'

US President Obama has given the Europeans a harsh lecture on the dangers of their ongoing debt crisis. Offended by the unsolicited advice, Europeans have suggested the US get its own house in order first. Obama's remarks were "arrogant" and "absurd," German commentators say on Wednesday. Europeans are well aware of the seriousness of their ongoing debt crisis. But they don't, it seems, like to receive lectures from other countries -- especially the United States, which is struggling to deal with its own mountain of debt. On Tuesday, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble curtly rejected recent American criticism of Europe's approach to solving its ...

(Reuters) - Pakistan warned the United States on Tuesday to stop accusing it of playing a double game with Islamist militants and heaped praise on "all-weather friend" China. Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, speaking exclusively to Reuters, said any unilateral military action by the United States to hunt down militants of the Haqqani network inside Pakistan would be a violation of his country's sovereignty. However, he side-stepped questions on the tense relations with the United States and offered no indications of any steps Pakistan might take to soothe the fury in Washington. The outgoing chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, last week described ...

Medvedev Warns Against Dissent As Putin Prepares to Retake Russian Presidency

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned opponents and government officials against dissent ahead of Vladimir Putin’s plan to regain the presidency, one day after Medvedev fired finance minister Alexei Kudrin. Last week, Medvedev agreed to swap jobs with Putin after presidential elections next March, spurring a wave of criticism against Putin having too much power. Putin, who leads the dominant United Russia Party, is almost guaranteed of victory – which means that, as the presidential terms have been extended to six years from four, he could rule Russia until the year 2024. Medvedev has also threatened action against politicians who oppose his program of increased defense ...

One of two US hikers freed from an Iranian jail where they were held for more than two years on charges of spying and illegal entry, has an Israeli father, Haaretz newspaper reported on Tuesday. Josh Fattal, who was released on Wednesday with fellow US hiker Shane Bauer, managed to hide from his Iranian captors the fact that his father was an Iraqi-born Jew who emigrated to Israel in 1951, the Israeli newspaper said. It said that Fattal's father Jacob, who has lived in the United States since completing his military service, declined to give any interviews after his son was arrested in July 2009, in a bid to hide his nationality. Speaking after his son's release, Jacob Fattal ...

Beyond the police roadblocks that mark the no-go zone around Japan’s wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant, six-foot tall weeds invade rice paddies and vines gone wild strangle road signs along empty streets. Takako Harada, 80, returned to an evacuated area of Iitate village to retrieve her car. Beside her house is an empty cattle pen, the 100 cows slaughtered on government order after radiation from the March 11 atomic disaster saturated the area, forcing 160,000 people to move away and leaving some places uninhabitable for two decades or more. “Older folks want to return, but the young worry about radiation,” said Harada, whose family ran the farm for 40 years. “I want to ...

Fidel Castro calls Obama UN address 'gibberish'

blasted Barack Obama's speech to the United Nations as "gibberish" on Monday, saying the US president used a rambling address to justify the "unjustifiable." In his first published column since July, the 85-year-old revolutionary icon slammed US and NATO intervention in Libya as "monstrous crimes" and said Obama -- whom he called the "yankee president" -- used a bully pulpit at the UN General Assembly last week to try and sway global opinion. Fidel, who handed the presidency to his younger brother Raul Castro in 2006 due to a health crisis, has laid low in recent months, and his column published in state media was his first since July 3. For centuries we have used the maps to establish the boundaries that defined policy. But it is time to abandon many of our concepts of self-organization of mankind. The revival of tribal relations in the world leads to a more complex global alliances. Where once defined the boundaries of diplomacy today, history, race, ethnicity, and culture divide humanity into new dynamic group. General concepts - "Green" movement, the socialists and the ideology of market capitalism - can inspire cosmopolitan elite, but for most people this is not enough motivation. As the once great Arab historian Ibn Khaldun, "only the tribes, held together a group feeling that can survive in the ...
