David Cameron vows to reclaim EU powers amid looming Tory rebellion Post Date: 2011-10-23 19:07:42 by A K A Stone

The Prime Minister is to demand more British control over employment and social laws in return for supporting a new European treaty to shore up the single currency. Although British taxpayers money will not be used for the new multi-trillion euro bail-out, it is expected to require a rewriting of EU treaties, which needs Britains backing and may prompt a referendum in this country. Mr Camerons repatriation of powers offer came as the Conservative leadership was making a last-ditch attempt to stop at least 60 Tory MPs voting for a referendum on leaving the European Union in the Commons today. Dozens of MPs were expected to reject the olive branch ...
Nicolas Sarkozy tells David Cameron: 'We’re sick of you telling us what to do' Post Date: 2011-10-23 19:06:05 by A K A Stone

David Cameron clashed repeatedly with Nicolas Sarkozy today after the French President tried to exclude Britain and non-eurozone countries from a critical Brussels summit to rescue European banks. During two hours of bitter exchanges during a meeting of all 27 EU leaders before a crisis summit of the eurozones 17 members on Wednesday, President Sarkozy fought hard to get the Prime Minister barred from talks that would finalise a 100billion euros cash injection into banks. Were sick of you criticising us and telling us what to do. You say you hate the euro, you didnt want to join and now you want to interfere in our meetings, the French leader told Mr Cameron, ...

As the sun rose over the shell of Sirte on Thursday, Ben Farmer, the only British newspaper journalist left in the city, found it was immediately apparent that something had changed. Utterly ravaged by months of bombardments, Sirte was a skeleton of a city a place without food, water or light; a city without citizens. Its streets were turned into rivers by burst pipes, as fighters battled through waist-high swathes of mud brown water, street by bloody street. But as the sun rose over the shell of Sirte on Thursday, it was immediately apparent that something had changed. I had arrived at the rebel position in the western suburb of Zafran in anticipation of another massed assault ...
How did a 33ft whale end up in the middle of a field in East Yorkshire? Post Date: 2011-10-23 02:13:43 by A K A Stone

A young whale died after an exceptionally high equinox tide carried it 800 yards from the shoreline to a salt marsh where it then became stranded. The 33ft mammal, thought to be a Sei whale, was discovered in marshes on the north bank of the River Humber near the village of Skeffling. As the tide retreated the whale became stranded before rolling over onto its blowhole, causing it to suffocate. The highest tides of the year occur after the spring and autumn equinox. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has since carried out a post-mortem examination on the mammal with the British Zoological Society. Experts who examined the animal said they are 95 per cent certain it is a female Sei whale ...

Security Council to Demand Yemen’s Saleh to Step Down (Obama's Next Target?) Post Date: 2011-10-23 01:29:16 by A K A Stone

The U.N. Security Council will vote Friday on a resolution calling on Yemen's President Ali Abdullah Saleh to immediately stand down and condemning the killings blamed on his government. The proposed resolution, which has the backing of all five permanent members of the Security Council, "strongly condemns" government violence against demonstrators and backs a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) peace plan under which Saleh must hand over power. Protests against Saleh erupted in January and hundreds have since been killed. With the violence worsening, this is the first resolution to be considered by the council. Diplomats said events in Libya, where ousted strongman Moammar ...

Let me make you an offer you can't refuse. We're pleased with all the terrorist actions you carried out in the past, but now Europe's in the OWG bag, we want to move on. From hereon, it's my way or the highway. Libya is also one of only five of Africa's 54 countries that have not been integrated into, which is to say subordinated to, the new U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). A year after assuming the post of president of the French Republic in 2007, and while his nation held the rotating European Union presidency, Nicolas Sarkozy invited the heads of state of the EU's 27 members and those of 17 non-EU Mediterranean countries to attend a conference in Paris to launch a ...

Reports in recent years have indicated that Crown Prince Sultan was battling cancer. A burial is scheduled for Tuesday, the Interior Ministry said. Iraqis Voice Happiness Over U.S. Withdrawal Decision Post Date: 2011-10-22 11:55:07 by Brian S

Iraqis voiced happiness on Saturday over President Barack Obamas declaration that US forces will leave by year-end, but some spoke of concern the pullout could further destabilise their country. The decision to withdraw all remaining soldiers in the country after nearly nine years of war, and the deaths of more than 4,400 US troops and tens of thousands of Iraqis, came after Baghdad and Washington failed to agree to legal immunity for a training mission past 2011. The day of their departure represents a historic moment and I will be the happiest person with the exit of the occupier from our country, said Abdulrahman Munshid al-Assi, a leader of the al-Obeid tribe in the ...

Khadafi's ironic last words broadcast to unforgiving world Post Date: 2011-10-22 01:28:41 by A K A Stone

Colonel Moammar Khadafi was never one to follow any moral or religious constraint wile he was alive, so it was highly ironic to learn that one of the final words he told his executioners "What you are doing is forbidden in Islamic law." Cell phone video footage of Khadafi's last moments are now circulating on the Internet, and typically show the graceless way an iron-fisted dictator leaves the mortal plain. I reached Oksana earlier today by phone and she told me she had learned of Gaddafi's death from the Internet. She sounded very upset. We spoke for a few minutes before someonepossibly her husband?told her to hang up the phone and we were cut off. Here is what she told me: "My family and I are in deep mourning for him. Even my parents, who have never met him, feel terribly sorry that he is dead. As I said he would, he did stay in Libya to his end. I consider him a brave hero. He did not escape the country, but stayed to die on his own land in his hometown of Sirte. All these months, I hoped that he would survive. My friends, Ukrainian nurses who worked for him, are all ...
NEWSMAKER-Saif al-Islam, Gaddafi's enigmatic Post Date: 2011-10-22 00:45:45 by A K A Stone

Oct 21 (Reuters) - Saif al-Islam Gaddafi is the most enigmatic of Muammar Gaddafi's children, apparently turning within weeks from philanthropist and liberal reformer into a fighter ready to die on his home soil rather than surrender.
Gaddafi junior, whose name means "Sword of Islam", is also the most elusive of the late Libyan leader's eight offspring, wanted on war crimes charges but evading a manhunt for months to remain the only leading family member still at large.
Educated at the London School of Economics and a fluent English speaker, Saif al-Islam was once seen by many governments as the acceptable, Western-friendly face of Libya, and a possible heir apparent.
But when a ...

Somalis Under Relentless Drone Attack as U.S. Tightens Military Grip on Continent Post Date: 2011-10-21 22:05:43 by A K A Stone

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford Africa, under President Obama, is an expanding theater of war for the United States. There are few points on the African map where the U.S. military does not operate, independently, through proxies, or by agreement with local governments and militaries. AFRICOM has penetrated the armed forces of the continent to a degree no single European power could have ever aspired. Indeed, the U.S. has so thoroughly infiltrated African armies, many, if not most, would be of no use for national defense against the Americans. Gaddafi's death breached the law, says Russia Post Date: 2011-10-21 21:01:24 by A K A Stone

As politicians in Western capitals were taking quiet pleasure in the capture and killing of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi yesterday, opinions elsewhere were divided. In Moscow, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Geneva Conventions had been breached with the killing of Colonel Gaddafi. "We have to lean on facts and international laws," Mr Lavrov said. "They say that a captured participant of an armed conflict should be treated in a certain way. And in any case, a prisoner of war should not be killed." Russia has been critical of Nato military action in Libya, saying that it has gone well beyond the stated mission of saving civilian life. The main concern for Moscow ...

Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's corpse has been stored in a shopping center freezer, the AP reports. "The body, stripped to the waist and wearing beige trousers, was laid on a bloodied mattress on the floor of an emptied-out room-sized freezer where restaurants and stores in the center normally keep perishables," the AP states. "Outside the shopping center, hundreds of civilians from Misrata jostled to get inside for a peek at the body, shouting 'God is great' and 'We want to see the dog.'" Reports of Gaddafi's capture and subsequent death circulated early Thursday with conflicting reports, there was an eye-witness account of Gadaffi ...
Mccain Calls End Of Iraq War “A Strategic Victory For Our Enemies” Post Date: 2011-10-21 19:23:47 by Brian S

WASHINGTON President Barack Obamas conservative critics on Friday blasted his announcement that all US troops will leave Iraq by years end, citing worries US archnemesis Iran will fill the vacuum. Republican Senator John McCain, Obamas rival for the White House in 2008, described the news as a consequential failure for Obama as well as Iraqs leaders after talks broke down on leaving a small US force beyond December 31. This decision will be viewed as a strategic victory for our enemies in the Middle East, especially the Iranian regime, which has worked relentlessly to ensure a full withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, he said. ...
