Iran is driving a hard bargain for granting access to the US stealth drone RQ-170 it captured undamaged last week, as Russian and Chinese military intelligence teams arriving in Tehran for a look at the secret aircraft soon found. debkafile's Moscow sources disclose that the price set by Revolutionary Guards commander Gen. Ali Jaafari includes advanced nuclear and missile technology, especially systems using solid fuel, the last word on centrifuges for enriching uranium and the S-300PMU-1 air defense system, which Moscow has consistently refused to sell Tehran. This super-weapon is effective against stealth warplanes and cruise missiles and therefore capable of seriously impairing any ...

(Reuters) - Army defectors fought government troops Sunday in one of the biggest battles of Syria's nine-month uprising, and a strike shut businesses in a new gesture of civil disobedience, residents and activists said. In a major international development likely to raise Western pressure on President Bashar al-Assad, France's Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said Paris believed Syria was behind attacks that wounded French peacekeepers in neighboring Lebanon Friday. In Sunday's fighting, Syrian troops mainly from the 12th Armored Brigade based in Isra, 40-km (25 miles) from the border with Jordan, stormed the nearby town of Busra al-Harir. A housewife in Busra who did not want to ...

For Republican presidential hopefuls, the early voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina are dominating travel schedules. But a flashy office building in midtown Manhattan is also a key campaign stop in their packed timetables. Newt Gingrich, the current Republican frontrunner, is the latest contender to visit Trump Tower to pay homage to "the Donald", the flamboyant real estate mogul and host of America's version of The Apprentice reality television show. Mr Trump's powerbroker role in the party's presidential campaign is vexing many Republican grandees - not least as he continues to hold out the possibility that he might launch an independent bid ...
UK opts out of EU pact to deal with debt crisis Post Date: 2011-12-10 11:33:28 by We The People

There was some backslapping but few expressions of glee after 26 of the 27 European Union countries reached a tentative agreement Friday to impose binding limits on national budgets and borrowing, with stiff penalties for those who overspend. The sole EU country to reject the deal was Great Britain. German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the agreement "a great step toward a stable Europe" and a crucial part of the continuing political and monetary integration and reformation of Europe. But the accord's principal architect repeatedly pointed out Friday that the deal was no quick solution. It would be implemented "step-by-step," and that that would take several ...

Hillary Clinton: Religious Beliefs Are Standing in the Way of Protecting Human Rights of LGBT People' By Patrick Goodenough and Susan Jones CNSNews.com) - Religious beliefs and cultural values do not justify the failure to uphold the human rights of homosexuals, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the United Nations in Geneva on Tuesday. "Now, raising this issue, I know, is sensitive for many people and that the obstacles standing in the way of protecting the human rights of LGBT people rest on deeply held personal, political, cultural, and religious beliefs," Clinton said. Mourning news: Turn dead bodies into beads Post Date: 2011-12-09 08:10:58 by A K A Stone

THE intense grief that Kim II-nam has felt every day since his father died 27 years ago led to a startling decision: He dug up the grave, cremated his father's bones and paid $870 to have the ashes transformed into gem-like beads. Kim is not alone in his desire to keep a loved one close - even in death. Changes in traditional South Korean beliefs about cherishing ancestors and a huge increase in cremation have led to a handful of niche businesses that cater to those who see honouring an urn filled with ashes as an imperfect way of mourning. "Whenever I look at these beads, I consider them to be my father and I remember the good old days with him," a grey-haired Kim, 69, ...

Leading Republican White House hopeful says he has a study under way comparing Pollard's sentence with comparable people sentenced for comparable deeds. Leading Republican White House hopeful Newt Gingrich discusses Jonathan Pollard in an Interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN Wednesday. Gingrich says he is leaning towards clemency in the case of Jonathan Pollard, but hasnt all the information needed to make up his mind. There are secrecy things involved here that I frankly don't - and I want to have access to as a candidate, and I don't think it's necessarily appropriate to have access to it, he said. But I am very cautious about what ...
Gingrich and U.S. Jewish mogul Adelson Forge Firm Alliance Post Date: 2011-12-08 16:19:55 by jwpegler

In the battle for the Republican pro-Israel vote, Newt Gingrich lacks Mitt Romneys broad base of prominent Jewish donors. But he has something potentially more powerful: the support of one of Benjamin Netanyahus most significant American backers, and a relationship with the Israeli prime minister himself that stretches back decades. Billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, one of the wealthiest men in the world and a major donor to Jewish and conservative causes, is widely known as a Netanyahu stalwart. Less well known are his equally close ties to Gingrich, to whom he has been a major giver in recent years. Adelsons faith in Gingrich hasnt been particularly ...

What's wrong with this picture? Can you see it? This is not one of my 'Photoshops', this is one of the most viewed photographs ever on Flickr, and it was posted by the Whitehouse on their official WH Flickr account. A popular Swedish program has uncovered something very funny about it. Notice how small Obama is in the picture? Much smaller than all of those who surround him. All over Sweden they are laughing at it, and how gullible we all were, that up until now, nobody else noticed.
