Calling for stronger ties with Iraq, Iranian officials have hailed what they called the " increasing" role of Iraq in the regional development. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said Monday that Tehran is pleased with the increasing authority of Iraq both in the region and in the entire Arab world, the official IRNA news agency reported. Khamenei made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. He referred to the meeting of the Arab League (AL) held recently in the Iraqi capital Baghdad as an another sign of Iraq's authority, and said the meeting put the country at the head of the AL, according to the report. U.N. To Investigate Plight Of Native Americans For First Time

The UN is to conduct an investigation into the plight of US Native Americans, the first such mission in its history. The human rights inquiry led by James Anaya, the UN special rapporteur on indigenous peoples, is scheduled to begin on Monday. Many of the country’s estimated 2.7 million Native Americans live in federally recognised tribal areas which are plagued with unemployment, alcoholism, high suicide rates, incest and other social problems. The UN mission is potentially contentious, with some conservatives almost certain to object to international interference in US domestic matters. Since his appointment as rapporteur in 2008, Anaya has focused on indigenous people in Central ...

PARIS — Socialist Francois Hollande will beat Nicolas Sarkozy in the second round of France’s presidential election by 54 percent to 46, according to the first opinion polls after Sunday’s first round vote. A survey by the Ipsos institute commissioned by French public television and the daily Le Monde predicted a majority of those who backed candidates eliminated in the first round would switch to the frontrunner in the run-off. A separate poll by Ifop for Europe 1 radio and news weekly Paris Match predicted a similar margin, with Hollande winning by 54.5 percent to 45.5 for the incumbent right-winger. The polls showed that the attitude of Marine Le Pen’s supporters ...

Egypt Scraps Israel Gas Supply Deal

Egyptian officials say they have scrapped an agreement to supply Israel with natural gas. Israel received around 40% of its gas supplies from Egypt and uses it to generate electricity. The announcement comes after the cross-border pipeline suffered numerous sabotage attacks which cut supplies. The Israeli Finance Minister, Yuval Steinitz, said the move was of "great concern", and overshadowed peace agreements between the countries. Egypt was the first Middle East country to sign a peace accord with Israel, in 1979, and the deal to supply energy has been a key part of agreements between the two states. Socialist presidential challenger François Hollande topped the first round of France’s presidential election on Sunday with 28.4 percent of votes, while incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy finished second with 25.5 percent, according to exit polls. Those figures set up a widely expected run-off between Sarkozy and the candidate of France’s main opposition party who led most voter intentions surveys before ...

Iran has completed reverse-engineering of the captured US spy drone and has started building its own copy, Iranian media reports. The Revolutionary Guard is yet to decode parts of the software the Sentinel aircraft uses, General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who heads the force’s aerospace division, said on Sunday."The Americans should be aware to what extent we have infiltrated the plane," Iranian Fars news agency quoted the general as saying. "Our experts have a full understanding of its components and programs."The Pentagon stated that the drone’s security will prevent Iranian engineers from cracking its technology.Tehran has already copied the Sentinel – as a ...

Spain Bans Cash The Daily Bell, Saturday, April 21, 2012 Spain Bans Cash Transactions Over 2,500 Euros … Spain has outlawed the use of cash in business transactions in excess 2,500 euros in order to crack down on the black market and tax evaders. The motivations behind the push for digital currencies is exposed as Spain heads down the road of the Greeks in combating their sovereign debtcrisis. As the government scrambles for every tax dollar it can get its hands on, even though they already gave every Spaniard $23,000 Euros in debt last year alone (approximately $32,500), they are now banning all large cash business transactions. Why? So they can track the transactions and make sure ...

SHANGHAI -- Chinese police have detained 22 people for making drug capsules using a toxic raw material produced from scrap leather, state media said, in the latest in a string of product safety scandals. Police in the eastern province of Zhejiang found the suspects allegedly made and sold capsules with excessive levels of chromium after using industrial gelatin made from discarded leather, the Xinhua News Agency said late Monday. Chromium, which has several industrial uses including leather tanning, can cause cancer. China has been hit by a series of product safety scandals, often involving food or pharmaceuticals, despite government pledges to improve supervision, and public outrage ...

Republicans Eye $680 Mln For Israel's 'Iron Dome' Shield
Post Date: 2012-04-21 19:37:34 by Brian S

WASHINGTON, April 20 (Reuters) - The United States would spend an additional $680 million through 2015 to strengthen Israel's short-range rocket shield under a plan crafted by House of Representatives' Republicans, two congressional staff members disclosed on Friday. The figure could put election-year pressure on President Barack Obama's administration to spell out what it deems suitable support for the "Iron Dome," which has played an increasingly important role in Israeli security. Israel has so far deployed three operating units of the system, which helped thwart Palestinian rocket salvos during a flare-up in fighting around the Gaza Strip last month. It has ...

Economy Could Doom Sarkozy As France Heads To Polls
Post Date: 2012-04-21 19:05:52 by Brian S

(Reuters) - France votes on Sunday in round one of a presidential vote, with a feeble economy that could make Nicolas Sarkozy the country's first president to lose a fight for re-election in more than 30 years. In a contest driven as much by a dislike of Sarkozy's showy style and his failure to bring down unemployment as by policy differences, Sarkozy and his Socialist rival Francois Hollande are pegged to beat eight other candidates to go through to a May 6 runoff, where polls give Hollande a double-digit lead. Hollande, 57, promises less drastic spending cuts than Sarkozy and wants higher taxes on the wealthy to fund state-aided job creation, in particular a 75 percent upper tax ...

WASHINGTON – As the Pentagon has sought to sell wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to often-hostile populations there, it has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on poorly tracked marketing and propaganda campaigns that military leaders like to call "information operations," the modern equivalent of psychological warfare. From 2005 to 2009, such spending rose from $9 million to $580 million a year mostly in Iraq and Afghanistan, Pentagon and congressional records show. Last year, spending dropped to $202 million as the Iraq War wrapped up. A USA TODAY investigation, based on dozens of interviews and a series of internal military reports, shows that Pentagon officials have little ...

A top Israeli official has acknowledged that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad never said that Iran seeks to "wipe Israel off the face of the map." The falsely translated statement has been widely attributed to Ahmadinejad and used repeatedly by U.S. and Israeli government officials to back military action and sanctions against Iran. But speaking to Teymoor Nabili of the network Al Jazeera, Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor admitted Ahmadinejad had been misquoted. Teymoor Nabili: "As we know, Ahmadinejad didn’t say that he plans to exterminate Israel, nor did he say that Iran policy is to exterminate Israel. Ahmadinejad’s position and Iran’s ...

Iran Reports ‘Progress’ on Indigenous S-300 Missile [Full Thread]

Iran’s Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi has announced progress in the development and manufacture of an indigenous version of the advanced Russian S-300 air defense missile system, the Fars news agency reported on Tuesday. "The production of an alternative missile system is underway,” he said, adding that the work “has yielded good results.” Iranian military officials earlier said the missile system, called Bavar (Belief) 373, is even more powerful and more advanced than the Russian S-300. The $800-million contract to supply Iran with the missile system was signed in late 2007. Russia was to deliver five S-300PMU-1 battalions to Tehran. However, on September 22, 20 ...

Economic Damage to US Economy from Offshoring Jobs May Be Exaggerated

Sending jobs overseas may not be as damaging to the U.S. economy as commonly believed, according to a study by a University at Buffalo economist. Offshoring, the practice of moving specific operational tasks originally performed in one country to a new location abroad, is just another form of trade in goods and services, says UB economics professor Winston Chang, an expert in international economics. U.S. firms, in fact, become more efficient and competitive when offshoring savings are redirected to new areas of operation, new products and services, or invested in further research and development, Chang noted. Chang's paper, which appears online in the Social Science Research Network ...

(04-18) 08:43 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) -- In another embarrassment to the Pentagon, newly published photographs purport to show U.S. troops posing with the bodies of dead insurgents in Afghanistan. Top U.S. military and civilian officials rushed to condemn the soldiers' actions Wednesday, calling them repugnant and a dishonor to others who have served in the conflict. The Army said an investigation is under way. The photos were published in Wednesday's Los Angeles Times. The photos show members of the 82nd Airborne Division posing in 2010 with Afghan police and the severed legs of a suicide bomber. U.S. Nominee Jim Yong Kim Chosen To Lead World Bank

The World Bank chose Korean-American physician Jim Yong Kim as its next chief Monday in a decision that surprised few despite the first-ever challenge to the US lock on the Bank’s presidency. The Bank’s directors chose Kim, a 52 year old US health expert and educator, over Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who had argued that the huge lender needs reorientation under someone from the developing world. Kim, 52 and currently president of the Ivy League University Dartmouth, will replace outgoing President Robert Zoellick, the former US diplomat who is departing in June at the end of his five-year term. The Bank’s directors expressed “deep appreciation” ...

Anders Behring Breivik, Norway Mass Killer, Claims 'Self Defense' As Trial Begins

OSLO, Norway — With a defiant closed-fist salute, a right-wing fanatic admitted Monday to a bomb-and-shooting massacre that killed 77 people in Norway but pleaded not guilty to criminal charges, saying he was acting in self-defense. On the first day of his long-awaited trial, Anders Behring Breivik rejected the authority of the court as it sought to assign responsibility for the July 22 attacks that shocked Norway and jolted the image of terrorism in Europe. Dressed in a dark suit and sporting a thin beard, Breivik smiled as a guard removed his handcuffs in the crowded court room. The 33-year-old then flashed his salute before shaking hands with prosecutors and court officials. ...

The first image shows Silverman extremely bloated after having eaten a burrito, and the second shows her wearing the same outfit with a wash-board flat stomach after the bloating had subsided. At the expense of the Republican party who want to take away women’s autonomy over their bodies, the comedienne paired potty humour with political commentary, using the montage to make a strong and simple point about the ongoing War on Women. And many people are applauding the high profile personality for using her trademark sarcasm to directly comment on the possibility the Roe vs Wade decision may be overturned in the U.S. Roe vs Wade was a landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on ...

He was one of a shortlist of five leaders who topped a public poll and on Saturday was selected as the ultimate winner by an audience of around 70 guests at a special event at the museum, in Chelsea, west London. In second place was Michael Collins, the Irish leader, ahead of Napoleon Bonaparte, Erwin Rommel and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. At the event, each contender had their case made by a historian giving a 40 minute presentation. The audience, who had paid to attend the day, then voted in a secret ballot after all five presentations had ...

Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul revealed this week that he would support moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, a surprising position that contradicts conventional wisdom about Paul's stance toward the Jewish state. Paul first made this position known Wednesday night, during a private meeting with evangelical leaders interested in helping the Texas Congressman reach out to the conservative Christian community. According to a transcript of the meeting obtained by Business Insider, the leaders started off the meeting by asking Paul whether he would sign an Executive Order to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a major policy objective for Israeli ...

I suppose there are solutions to my problem, such as joining the Tea Party and having another monthly expense being written off as, "donation to save Israel" yet I am more interested in how to stop bleeding to death with the cash outlay that my professional auditor has claimed, whom has already verified EVERY DIME I can write off for 2011. And besides joining the Tea Party doing nothing for me, I suppose I could run out and join the 99 per centers but they kinda stink in the first place which disqualifies them. By Sangwon Yoon - Fri Apr 13 15:00:01 GMT 2012 Kim Jong Un suffered a public humiliation as North Korea’s third-generation leader unlike any his father or grandfather faced after the totalitarian state admitted a long-range rocket failed shortly after liftoff. The launch was meant to mark the April 15 centennial of grandfather and state founder Kim Il Sung and further cement the younger Kim’s assumption of the family mantle, which the government has been burnishing since he took over in December. Its failure may raise questions of his hereditary hold on power as he deals with the country’s impoverished economy and international condemnation of its nuclear program. ...
