A 1987 study ordered by the CIA found that Jonathan Pollard, convicted in the U.S. of spying for Israel, never sought to obtain information about U.S. activities. Rather, he was instructed by his Israeli handlers to obtain information about Israel's enemies. The 1987 study by the Foreign Denial and Deception Analysis Committee was ordered by the CIA. It is now being made public, 25 years later, with heavy CIA redaction. It said Pollard's handlers were Rafi Eitan, advisor on counterterrorism to Prime Minister Shamir, as well as IAF Col. Aviem Sella and Joseph Yagur, Counselor for Scientific Affairs at the Israeli Consulate in New York. After returning from Paris, Pollard ...

In an unusual development that researchers are calling evidence of adaptive behavior, some catfish have taken to jumping on land to hunt live pigeons. Discover Magazine's Ed Yong writes, "These particular catfish have taken to lunging out of the water, grabbing a pigeon, and then wriggling back into the water to swallow their prey. In the process, they temporarily strand themselves on land for a few seconds." Researchers captured video of the European catfish, which reside in the River Tarn in southwestern France. In the footage, several of the fish, which range in length from 3 to nearly 5 feet, are seen thrusting their bodies from the shallow banks onto land where they ...

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A shocking video posted on YouTube and other Internet networks showed Al Qaeda terrorists who are active in Syria within the framework of the Free Syrian Army are preparing to use chemical weapons against Syrian Shiites. The video showed the group testing chemical weapons on lab rabbits. On the video, it appeared to be a nerve gas that rebels used on the rabbits. Then about a minute later, the rabbits were seen having convulsions. The person carrying out the test, said in the video, "You saw what happened? This will be your fate, you infidel Alawites, I swear by ALLAH to make you die like these rabbits, one minute only after you inhale the gas." On ...
Oren: Chemical Weapons in Wrong Hands Would be 'Game Changer' Post Date: 2012-12-09 23:37:59 by A K A Stone

Israeli ambassador to the United States Michael Oren warned Sunday that any evidence of chemical weapons being passed from the Assad regime to terrorist groups like Hizbullah would be a red line for Israel and could constitute military action. While Oren could not confirm recent claims that the Syrian regime is mixing and moving components for the deadly sarin nerve gas, he said that Israel is watching the situation "very carefully." "Were those weapons to pass into the wrong hands -- Huzbullah's hands, for example -- that would be a game-changer for us," Oren told "Fox News Sunday." "We have a very clear red line about those chemical ...

Egypt's Morsi Annuls Orders Giving Him Sweeping Powers, But Keeps Dec. 15 Constitution Vote Post Date: 2012-12-08 19:05:47 by Brian S

CAIRO -- Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi on Saturday issued a decree annulling the most controversial parts of earlier orders that granted him sweeping powers, including the ability to make laws and decisions that are not subject to judicial reviews. The earlier orders had led to three weeks of violent clashes between Morsi supporters and the political opposition. The president no longer has absolute powers, but his government's draft constitution will stand in its current form and will not be subject to change before a referendum set for Dec. 15, NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reported from Cairo. The new declaration still calls for the referendum to go ahead as scheduled, but the new ...
Rand Paul Foreign Policy Speech and Trip to Israel Announced Post Date: 2012-12-08 18:32:33 by Brian S

Already mentioned as a 2016 presidential hopeful, Kentucky US Senator Rand Paul is planning a trip to Israel and Jordan. According to the UK Telegraphs Tim Stanley, Senator Paul is also preparing to give a foreign policy address in the near future. The trip and speech may suggest a few things. The most obvious is that Paul is seriously thinking about a presidential run and the trip to Israel is almost obligatory when the strongest base of support for his party comes from evangelical Christians. Also, as a presidential contender, Paul is trying to show that he is not a clone of his father, retiring Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), and that he is willing to take positions aligned with the more ...

Israel promised to respond to the UN General Assembly's recognition of Palestine as a state, in violation of the Oslo Agreement, by building an additional 3,000 settlement units on land claimed by the Palestinians. This immediately prompted cries from the Arab League-dominated UN about Israel's "expansionist" policies requiring immediate UN intervention. The UN General Assembly voted to recognize Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders. If they are pre-1967 borders, then what does that mean? It means the borders which existed prior to the Six Days War, which means the borders as they existed in 1948. Let's fire up the WayBack Machine and revisit how the State of ...
Military Faces Though Questions About Targeting ‘Hostile’ Children In Afghanistan Post Date: 2012-12-08 10:04:45 by Brian S

The US military is facing fresh questions over its targeting policy in Afghanistan after a senior army officer suggested that troops were on the lookout for children with potential hostile intent. In comments which legal experts and campaigners described as deeply troubling, army Lt Col Marion Carrington told the Marine Corp Times that children, as well as military-age males, had been identified as a potential threat because some were being used by the Taliban to assist in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. It kind of opens our aperture, said Carrington, whose unit, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, was assisting ...
Rand Paul Softens Opposition on Israel Foreign Aid Post Date: 2012-12-07 11:26:23 by Brian S

Sen. Rand Paul, an outspoken opponent of all foreign aid, is ready to make an exception for Israel. The freshman Kentucky Republican, who is considering a 2016 presidential run, still says the United States should reduce its spending by cutting foreign assistance to countries such as Egypt and Libya, where U.S. diplomatic missions have been attacked. He also wants to halt aid to Pakistan until it releases from jail a local doctor who helped U.S. forces in the operation that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. But Paul has changed his tune on aid to Israel, which he once said should not be spared from his call for an end to foreign aid. What Ive said is that we cant ...
Greek Schools ‘Fertile Ground For Neo-Nazis’ Post Date: 2012-12-06 10:48:05 by Brian S

Schools in crisis-hit Greece are proving fertile ground for Golden Dawn, the neo-Nazi group suspected of orchestrating attacks on migrants whose popularity is on the rise, anti-racism activists warn. Once a secretive group on the fringe of Greek politics, Golden Dawn picked up over 400,000 votes in a June election dominated by anti-austerity anger. Capitalising on popular anger with the perceived decades-old corruption of mainstream parties, the group elected 18 lawmakers in the 300-seat Greek parliament and is now the party of choice for one in 10 Greeks, polls show. Still thin on numbers, Golden Dawn now seeks to spread the word to the next generation. In November, a brawl broke out ...

Wen made the remarks in a written speech delivered at the airport Wednesday evening after a visit to Kyrgyzstan, where the Chinese premier attended the prime ministers' meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). With international and regional situations becoming more and more complicated, Wen said, China and Russia should continue to deepen their comprehensive strategic coordination partnership and push their cooperation to a higher level. Syria has loaded chemical weapons into bombs; awaiting attack order from Assad Post Date: 2012-12-05 22:37:03 by A K A Stone

U.S. officials say the Syrian military has loaded active chemical weapons into bombs and is awaiting a final order from embattled President Bashar Assad to use the deadly weapons against its own people. NBC News reports that on Wednesday the Syrian military loaded sarin gas into aerial bombs that could be deployed from dozens of aircraft. The last large-scale use of sarin was in 1988, when former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's forces killed 5,000 Kurds in a single attack. However, U.S. officials told NBC that the sarin bombs had not yet been loaded onto planes but added if Assad gives the final order, "there's little the outside world can do to stop it." The Syrian ...

CAIRO Angry mobs of Islamists battled secular protesters with fists, rocks and firebombs in the streets around the presidential palace for hours Wednesday night in the first major outbreak of violence between political factions here since the revolt against then-President Hosni Mubarak began nearly two years ago. Three senior advisers to Mr. Mubaraks successor, Mohamed Morsi, Egypts first freely elected president, resigned during the clashes, blaming him for the bloodshed, and his prime minister implored both sides to pull back in order to make room for dialogue. The scale of the clashes, in an affluent neighborhood just outside Mr. Morsis office in ...

Wal-Mart Nixed Paying Bangladesh Suppliers to Fight Fire Post Date: 2012-12-05 15:33:40 by Brian S

At a meeting convened in 2011 to boost safety at Bangladesh garment factories, Wal- Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) made a call: paying suppliers more to help them upgrade their manufacturing facilities was too costly. The comments from a Wal-Mart sourcing director appear in minutes of the meeting, which was attended by more than a dozen retailers including Gap Inc. (GPS), Target Corp. and JC Penney Co. Details of the meeting have emerged after a fire at a Bangladesh factory that made clothes for Wal-Mart and Sears Holdings Corp. killed more than 100 people last month. The blaze has renewed pressure on companies to improve working conditions in Bangladesh, where more than 700 garment workers have ...
Iran Tells US To ‘Recount’ Drones Post Date: 2012-12-05 10:16:01 by Brian S

Irans Revolutionary Guards are telling the United States to recount the drones in its fleet as they insist that despite US denials they captured a small US unmanned spy plane over Gulf waters, Iranian media said Wednesday. Its capture is not an issue the Americans can easily refute, Guards spokesman Brigadier General Ramezan Sharif was quoted as saying. I advise the American commanders to recount their drones accurately, he said. The Guards on Tuesday claimed to have recently captured a ScanEagle drone, a low- cost, short-range unmanned aircraft made by Boeing that measures 1.4 metres (4.5 feet) long and with a wingspan of three ...
East Germany's secret police sold citizens to western pharmaceutical companies to use as human guinea pigs in drug trials Post Date: 2012-12-05 09:46:09 by A K A Stone

Former Communist East Germany secretly sold its citizens to western pharmaceutical companies to use as human guinea pigs in drug trials. Tens of thousands of sick people in the former German Democratic Republic were treated with medicines not approved in the West to see how effective they were. Details of the top secret project have been unearthed in the files of the Stasi secret police in Berlin. The communist regime profited with millions in hard currency. But the human cost was high with dozens killed through side effects of drugs which had bypassed the normally stringent testing procedures demanded by western democracies. Even worse, some patients received placebos - pills that did ...

Two fishermen lost in Siberia are suspected of killing and eating their friend in order to survive, it was claimed last night.
A fourth man is also missing, leading to fears that he, too, was murdered and cannibalised.
Alexander Abdullaev, 37, and Alexei Gradulenko, 35, were plucked to safety by a rescue helicopter having survived temperatures lower than minus 30C three months after embarking on their fishing trip.
But police also found the remains of one of their friends, his body so hacked to pieces that he has not been identified.
A wooden stake was found nearby close to a bloodstained jacket, reported the Siberian Times.
'We suspect, the two survivors could have ...

General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling on Israel to join the NPT and allow IAEA inspectors The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling on Israel to open its nuclear program for inspection without further delay. Israels advanced nuclear arsenal has long been understood to exist, although it hasnt been officially admitted by the Israeli government. Many have argued Israels possession of nuclear weapons is what drives the accelerated Iranian program and causes other regional instability. The resolution was approved on Monday by a vote of 174-6 with 6 abstentions and calls on Israel to join the Nuclear ...
Iran Claims It Captured U.S. Drone Post Date: 2012-12-04 10:09:15 by Brian S

TEHRAN, IRAN Iran claimed Tuesday it had captured a U.S. drone after it entered Iranian airspace over the Persian Gulf -- even showing an image of a purportedly downed craft on state TV -- but the U.S. Navy said all its unmanned aircraft in the region were "fully accounted for." The conflicting accounts still leave the possibility that the drone claimed by Iran, a Boeing-designed ScanEagle, could have been plucked from the sea in the past and unveiled for maximum effect following escalating tensions over U.S. surveillance missions in the Gulf. Other countries in the region, such as the United Arab Emirates, also have ScanEagle drones in their fleets. Cmdr. Jason Salata, a ...

When I made an appointment to see Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard last week, I hoped we would spend most of our time discussing her new effort to better integrate her country into Asia. Gillards pivot toward Asia, much like U.S. President Barack Obamas, reflects the self- evident truth that China and its neighbors are her countrys biggest markets and the source of many of its new immigrants. Now the pivot has been paralyzed midrotation by events from that most unpromising corner of the world, the Middle East. I saw Gillard in Canberra after one of her rougher weeks as prime minister. She was already being shellacked by the opposition, and by much of the news ...
